It would have to be hung in a bright yellow room, I would think, and that would make it just too optimistic for a gray rainy depression. Rather than cheering me up, it would have the opposite effect.

I don't know why. It can't be because of style. Berthe Morisot was the most popular. More than Monet. I don't think it was political. As far as I know, his beliefs lined up--more or less--with the rest of the Impressionists, except Pizarro.

I agree-I love Renoir after seeing an exhibition of his works that are at the Petit Palais. It seems like he actually liked the people he painted, which is a nice thought. I imagine a lot of artists had to paint portraits to keep food on the table, and resented those who commissioned their work. This is refreshing.

Regarding Malaria's being rented out to Weinstein :

Do you really honestly believe that Barky and Mooch didn't know? The POTUS with every intelligence, military and LE agency at his command knew NOTHING about Weinstein's freakiness?

Malia supposedly lost her SS protection during that internship. And even if she had them, are you saying that she would have rejected Weinstein's sex-for-fame deal because "morals and scruples" and shit?

Why is everyone so willing to defend the Obama dynasty's crypto-Muslim "honor"? Did I miss a memo about the last 8 years?

Were the millions in cold cash sent to Iran not enough proof?

They don't think like you. Their value system consists of trading their humanity for fame, power and money. The only reason that half of these people are making noise now is either to get paid or defend their personal wealth.

Their consciences are burnt charcoal. They are fully convinced that they are better than us. They have no idea how to earn money. They barter with what they have: sex, power, control, family, children.

These people are NOT LIKE YOU.

117 I saw a post yesterday that had a very plausible hypothesis that the country music festival wasn't the intended target. The shooter was still in preparation for his big event, which is why the tannerite was still in the car and not rigged for detonation. The security guard interrupted his preparations -- he saw him through the camera and thought the jig was up, shot him, and then spent the next few minutes getting ready to hit the target of opportunity (breaking windows, loading magazines into weapons, etc.). Apparently the security guard went up for another room where the door was ajar. And we still don't know what the big event he was preparing for is -- what was scheduled in that plaza at a later date?

122 Re: on Malia being an "intern" at Weinstein Co.

You haven't thought through how deep the rot goes. I doubt that Malia was ever required to show up, beyond doing lunch a few times with starstruck fans of her Daddy. The only reason that she was placed there was so that Weinstein and Co. could have a very easy and secure back door way of funneling cash to the Dem party structure behind the scenes, whenever they needed to.

Malia was just a convenient placeholder. But it was never about her actually doing a job, or even showing up.

We think about rules for jobs like all of the little people do - you have to show up, you're supposed to do something. But the Obama's and the Weinstein's of this world know that none of these rules were ever meant to apply to them.

142 My favorite Renoir though is Nude in Sunlight. I especially like the criticism from the art critics of the day that described it as a painting of a rotting corpse. I don't think they appreciated Impressionists at that time.
Posted by: Time right before Mad Max at October 12, 2017 09:50 AM (Uysai)

The Impressionists were revolutionary, inspired heavily by Manet. Before them art was naturalist. The Academy prized idealism above all. To the powers-that-were they were the exact opposite. They were the next generation after the Marxists and socialist revolutions. The culture-brokers probably saw their un-idealistic styles as another counter-culture (which they were) and against everything civilized society should be. What's interesting is that for the most part, they were pretty bourgeois and considered themselves ultra-realists.

Michael Taylor seems like a nice kid. He was as surprised as anybody by that grand slam!

My husband and I were at the last Nats regular season game, and we were sitting in the right field section, behind Bryce Harper. The section next to us was behind Michael Taylor, and there was a family in the front row, dad, mom, 2 kids, all sporting Taylor jerseys (probably the only ones in the park) and with a banner that said "Michael Taylor for President" on it. They would stand and hold the banner whenever he was at bat, or coming back out to center field. No idea why, and I don't think they were related, because the family was white and Taylor is black. It was cute though.

209 Breaking news.. Trump hinted at this good news in yesterday's speech..

Taliban hostage family freed by Pakistani troops

Pakistani soldiers have freed a North American family of five who were being held hostage by the Afghan Taliban.
Canadian Joshua Boyle and his US wife Caitlan Coleman were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012. They had three children while in captivity.
They were rescued after a US tip-off during an operation near the Afghan border, the Pakistani army said.
US President Donald Trump said it was a "positive moment" for US-Pakistan ties.
"Ms Coleman gave birth to the couple's three children while they were in captivity," Mr Trump said in a White House statement. "Today, they are free."
He added: "The Pakistani government's co-operation is a sign that it is honouring America's wishes for it to do more to provide security in the region.

232 Oh I like this one a lot. The woman with the basket looking vaguely toward the camera is the bargirl from the Manet painting with the mirror behind it. She's taken all of the dye out of her hair (like Lilly, from Lilly, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts).

She's looking vaguely toward the camera because Renoir is dead at this point and she can't really see him, just senses him. The little girl with the hoop and the stick is looking right at us because she can in fact see dead people.

Indeed, the little girl will grow up to be a fetching beauty and the unheralded true cause of WWI, with more death to her credit than Helen of Troy.

The guy with the umbrella and the beard, top left, will go on to play Kinsey in Mad Men.

246 In light of a 100+ win team not making it to the World Series, there are (and have been for some time) some sports writers who would like to see two trophies given out in baseball.

Two years ago the Cardinals had an historic first half, looking like they would break their team record for wins in a season... which I think it 105.

They limped down the stretch and made it to 100. Best in baseball that year. Then were promptly dispatched by the Cubs in the division series. As we all know now, the Cubs were up and comers, not ready that year, but finally won it all last year.

It's always been true that the regular season is only ONE test of a championship team. It's the endurance part. You have to have the horses to win the sprints of the playoffs/World Series as well. Or else go home.

Too bad for the Indians. What a marvelous year they had. Looks like they were damaged by injuries though.

Since we don't want the losing team to feel bad, they should also get a 4ft high trophy plated in gold, because they worked really hard, too, and they only lost because of chance, maybe the light got into the outfielder's eyes. We don't want to deny them the opportunity of a trophy because of that.

True, but by the same token, sometimes it's not about play as much as it is who can you trade for during the season. Many times the team that plays in April looks nothing like the team that plays in October.

But, then again, the business of professional baseball includes the business of professional baseball.

All teams have an equal shot a buying and trading players (or so they say.)

The last weekend in July is often more determinative of a team's world series chances than the first four months of play.

I was born and raised Southern Baptist, with a bit of Orthodox Jew thrown in. Living overseas, you go to church wherever you can find one-particularly in the Middle East. We started going to a Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod, doncha know) here in NoVa, because the parking lot wasn't full of Obama/Coexist stickers. But they foolishly made me a ministry lead, and I have to go to meetings. And...Plus sized women in their Mickey Mouse Sweater Vests (to steal from Iowahawk) are fierce about their ministry turf and defend it with the passion of CBD finding ways to taunt bluebell about the Red Sox. They also try to encroach on other's turf, and get shirty about it. Baptist just bless your heart. These women take a casserole spoon to it.

Me, too! The way the paintings were displayed was overwhelming and fabulous.

The story of how the collection ended up at the new site is sad and upsetting - an interesting dilemma of private ownership vs. public desire to share the collection with the world. So wish Barnes had planned it better. There's a documentary called "The Art of the Steal" about it, which is biased toward keeping paintings at original site. Even if you don' side with them, seeing how the vultures on the other side (including PA governor, the DA, the local paper, etc.) behaved in order to manage it is unsettling.

It makes no sense that he would have the explosives and not have them rigged. It is plausible that he intended to rig the bomb(s) over the next few days, but his preparations were interrupted by the security guard. That's why the security guard was shot before the attack -- because the attack was a target of opportunity, not the original target.

Because they are dumbasses who didn't listen in Western Vic 101-Vikings were captured by Ottomans during raids there, and became the Janissary guards. It was considered a huge honor, and the sultans loved them because they were huge, fierce, and red-headed. There are a number of red headed Saudis now, who are treated with great deference, because they are direct descendants of the Janissaries.

But Western civ is stupid and racist, so we shouldn't ever study it.

Nope, I was wrong. I was confusing her with Shannen Doherty, who she replaced on some t.v. show. Doherty shaved her head because her hair was coming out due to the chemo. It wasn't a political statement, or an indication that she was crazy, just sick. McGowan shaved her hair for some stunt.

Sorry for the confusion (mine).

441 The Janissaries of the Ottoman Empire were an interesting group, which as you say nobody studies anymore because nobody studies history. It wasn't just that they were physically quite imposing, being descended from Viking raiders. But the biggest problem the Ottoman's faced was how to hang onto power over the middle east, which has ALWAYS been a miserable place to try and govern.

So their solution was to develop an elite fighting force, with all of the best weapons they could buy, which had NO ties to any tribes or nationalities or regions anywhere in the Empire. And that also gave them no reason to ever join a rebellion, since there was no one who would ally with them.

They were the Sultan's personal fighting force, they would gladly go out and thump ANYBODY the Sultan told them to go after, and their loyalty was absolutely guaranteed.

Not a bad setup, gives some insights on how the Ottoman's managed to get 400 years of peace out of the middle east.

460 Are States still required to comply with Obamacare mandated coverage? If so, allowing across state lines business won't make that big of a difference at this time. The money saver was carriers being able to sell policies from one state that had less regulation to another state that had more. If they are still bound by Obamacare that requires coverage for mammograms as an example, then the cost savings are minimal.
