Lotus Lilies
Charles Courtney Curran

The Guardian's theater critic just gave the current revival of the play, "My Name Is Rachel Corrie" four stars.

From UK Media Watch: Guardian reviews anti-Israel Guardian play...and approves!

Had the play instead been called My Name is Rachel and included stories of the 19 Israeli Rachels murdered by Hamas (whose tunnels Corrie was trying to shield when she herself was killed) and Fatah during the second Intifada then I doubt the play will have sold many seats.

Rachel Corrie is dead because of her own actions...dead because she was a Jew-hating leftist who got in over her head. I have no sympathy for her or her family, who have been using her death as a bludgeon with which to beat Israel on the world stage.

And my liberal friends and relatives wonder why I own guns....

Would they even know how to swim? Maybe they would. That's something I take for granted, but was less common than now, like hygiene and literacy.

My guess is that if you didn't live near a large body of water you never learned-- and if you were upper-crust, maybe not even then.

on november 15, christie's, new york, is selling a newly discovered painting by leonardo da vinci. you can see a picture and interesting description of the history of the work at their website, christie's.com.

it's not the entire story, but most of it. i've followed the work for about ten years and it's interesting. it was purchased about 12 years ago at a regional american auction and a relatively unknown dealer recognized its possible leonardo authorship and shepherded its cleaning and researched the provenance bringing in top scholars. it is now accepted as authentic by a broad consensus of informed opinion.

go to christie's.com to check it out and if you're in new york in a few weeks, view the painting. there are only 20 accepted leonardo's and only one in the u.s.

I'd be surprised if he intends to come back. Especially since after a major California human trafficking bust a couple of months ago the investigators claimed they had found "names everyone would recognize" from Hollywood as being involved. To those wondering why Trump hasn't been more obviously pulling the rug from his enemies' feet, this may well be an example of exactly that. Hollywood, Hillary, and Obama all take major blows *while* cleaning up trafficking.

The great crime of Hitler in many of their eyes was that he took the hatred that they had always been politely hiding and put it right out in front, for everyone to see, where they had to disavow it and deny it.

They've never forgiven the jews for embarrassing them that way.

The stereotypical Palestinian lad was a diaphonously-clad wisp of the desert.
If you were a late-middle-aged, staid Victorian with a taste for discipline and the lash, which way would you swing?

Well that was 60 years ago. Things have changed. Jews have gotten a lot suaver for one thing. But those with a taste for the boys, they still prefer the desert flowers.

The King David Hotel was bombed (terror bombed) by the Irgun, which was a very militant wing of the Jews in Palestine. Menachem Begin was part of the Irgun in those days, and who knows how directly it was involved.

The King David Hotel was where a lot of the British were staying, as part of the Mandate government. The Palmach was willing to wait for the British to withdraw, as promised. The Irgun didn't believe they would leave, and bombed the hotel and other places to force the British out.

191 The real debate on Zionism was going on just before WWI. The damnedest places were being put forward as official Homelands for the Jews, and a lot of them were in Africa. You find evidence of big and secretive Jewish landings in several countries, either laying a groundwork, hedging a bet, or getting ready to take advantage of the real estate market, depending on how anti-Semite your attitude is. Churchill was all over this Jewish Question thing.

Most people, I think, including a lot of Germans and such who didn't want Jews around, thought that "solving the Jewish Question" meant finding a place they could all go. Not that you'd have to force them, or anything. So that's the Question that the Solution was for.

And a lot of people who opposed physical Zionism, in those days, didn't want the Jews to go, because it would centralize all that nefarious capital and cut other imperial powers out of it. Kipling's "The Fifth River" is only ghastly if you know what we know, which he of course never would know.

The champions of communism, socialism and fascism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement. They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty for anyone not pledged to the cult Liberalism. They call themselves Democrats, yet they yearn for a dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent in every way imaginable..

They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden yet the results are simply more unsustainable debt that will eventually enslave our progeny. They plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office, every man but one a subordinate clerk in a giant bureau. Modern ctrl-left Progressive Liberalism is a serious and dangerous mental disorder

293 The champions of communism, socialism and fascism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement.

Further proof, as if we needed any, that everything is backwards, especially politics.

They should have called it "I am Saint Corrie". The unadulterated crap that is in that play is astounding. True leftists have raised her up to a figure that is heroically standing up to the evil in the world and self-sacrificing herself in the name of justice and righteousness.

It is so bad that there was a local spat over whether the play should even be put on since it would be akin to blasphemy. No really, it happened.

It is nothing but an actress doing monologues of letters she has written.

360 I hadn't been keeping track of the USS McCain situation - steerage failure? Really?

There is an elaborate on-going investigation. The results will be given to Congress at the end of November. However, the McCain's steering failed. And yeah, they are also looking into if there is a culture that ignores problems or overrides mechanical problems for mission expediency.

361 Come to St. Louis. Big Catholic high schools have been breeding world class soccer players for a long long time. Back in the day I was a pretty darned good player... and had zero chance of making my high school team.

Posted by: BurtTC at October 11, 2017 10:36 AM (TOk1P)

I didn't know that. I thought beisball reigned supreme in St. Louis - the one city where it still does.

(Well, maybe, LA too since the Dodgers draw crowds and NFL teams do not. But the biggest sport there seems to be groping starlets.)

Roughly similar, I think, to the way they do football in Texas. Everyone makes their kids get up early in the morning, take vacations around their kids' soccer schedules...

Well, I'm exaggerating when I say everyone, but it's really huge here still.

Baseball... yeah, professionally, that's what we do (not this year, of course), but the amateurs, it's soccer.

If the water lilly is symbolic of the mish, what we have here is a lake of mishes, upon which floats a mish-shaped boat. Except instead of the man in the boat analogy to find one of the mish parts, we have two mish-bearing humans, each gathering mish plants to put in their mish laps.

Next to their mishes.

369 "hadn't been keeping track of the USS McCain situation - steerage failure? Really? "

Oddly enough, in a former life I was often stationed in aft steering during maneuvering and refueling events as part of the Aft Steering team.

My self, an electrician and a qualified helmsman, with the helmsman wearing sound powered phones connected to the bridge and maneuvering circuit.

I would assume that going through the congested Straits would have required the setting of Navigation Detail, as well as the manning of aft steering, at a minimum. And with a recent report of a steering casualty, the likelihood of steering being manned approaches 100%.

And in case of loss of steering control from the bridge, verbal rudder orders are passed down on the phone, or simple course orders are passed down.

Ain't buying the loss of steering as the root cause, or even secondary or tertiary contributor to that collision.

377 I want to point out a relatively explosive revelation - shooter's use of the service elevator at the hotel.

They say no cameras in hallway. I don't know that I believe that but could be. But they say only in elevators. That makes me believe there is video of him using the service elevator. And that is probably restricted by card key - so they are going to have a record of whose card key it was.

I think that we are now starting to drill down on the accomplice theory.

If he had an accomplice, then it makes the "he just snapped" explanation a lot harder. Unless of course he paid somebody $10k for a card and said don't ask questions. Which is entirely possible.

Like I said, it isn't like the motto of Las Vegas is "if you see something, say something."

----

Actually, the way I understand it, the Navy ship was crossing in front of the merchant vessel. The container ship altered course to starboard, hitting the Fitzgerald on the starboard side.

The Merchant vessel has the right of way under those conditions, but when the merchant ship altered course to starboard, they caused the two ships to collide. Had the Merchant ship turned to port, it would have passed behind the Fitzgerald.

We're doing some market testing on new characters.

Right now, we've cast "unnamed maintenance man" in a role, and added "freight elevator" as well.

However.... "freight elevator" might be problematic, since Steve Wynn said that in HIS hotel you need to be escorted by an employee to use said "freight elevator"

We are working on the "security" videos, and our CGI guys are putting an unidentifed employee in the elevator with Paddock, so we've got that covered. Time stamping fake footage is a bitch though, so we're not sure when we can release it.

Yes I forgot about maintenance guy. Security guy who was a hero for stopping the massacre for going longer - wait, I am sorry, I mean randomly going down the hall and got shot and then shot at with 200 rounds - oh, wait, he's a hero because he kept unnamed maintenance guy from going down the hall - except maybe maintenance guy was shot at too?

Was he there when security guard was shot?

This seems to be the current story:

Security guard is on the floor to check open door.

Maintenance man is there as well.

Security guard approaches Paddock door

Security guard gets shot.

Security guard retreats.

Security guard does not radio for help.

Security guard does nothing.

What does maintenance man do?

Where is he through all of this?

Jesus, the Security guard: "Miguel, I've been shot."

Miguel the Maintenance Man: "I see that."

Miguel: "That's a good idea. I have to go change a light bulb on another floor."

It was put together as a sort of tribute to the first responders and survivors (and I suppose the victims) of the shooting (a mere 10 days earlier). At best I would say it was awkward. But my gut reaction is that it came across almost unseemly.

Introducing the starting line-up each player accompanied a first responder (cops, firemen, EMTs, doctors, nurses). Photo montage of groups of people (ER staff, Cops, Hotel staff) saying "We are Vegas" in unison.

"VEGAS STRONG" and "YAY US", and "THE BEST OF HUMAN NATURE"

I sort of get all of that, but it struck an odd note.

If you're an ambitious liberal woman with no moral compass and no belief in any God but money, sure, sex with a fat fuck is not off the table.

I have in my hands my late grandfather's school book from 1920.

I have shown it to school kids who are gobsmacked at the "difficulty" of it. One section is on patriotism, and understanding the words in "America," another section is on the fall of the Alamo, by Joseph A. Altsheler:

The young students are asked to learn the following names and words: Cos, Duque, Morales, Romero, Sesma, Gaona, Deguelo, Santa Ana, Alamo. They are also taught that "Thermophylae had its messenger! The Alamo had none." is inscribed on the building.

It's stunning to compare and contrast this small school book with what passes for "learning" now. And my grandfather had to leave school young to work, after his father died. Became a home builder and electrician, and worked at Cape Canaveral.

If you read what Asia Argento said about it, she felt so horrible about it that she couldn't bring herself to report it.

I am not sure how much of the stories are true - I think Pervy should go by Obama Title IX rules: he is accused, so he is guilty, and he doesn't get any lawyers.

But, I have to wonder about the mechanics of some of the stories. Like how exactly a male forces oral sex on a woman, I just don't see how that works. And Lauren Sivan, he has her in a hallway, then goes over to a plant? She doesn't just walk away? I mean, it takes some amount of time to do that.

At full auto it would be extremely confusing and it could definitely sound like multiple shooters with so many tall buildings around. Given the muzzle velocity on some of his weapons, you could probably get multiple bullets fired before the first echo would be heard. Let's assume the muzzle velocity was 2500-3000 fps on the weapons. Speed of sound is roughly 1125 fps.

However, Weinstein was not the guy who says "I want to make you a big star, all you have to do is X" There was no transaction, he got off on the power of forcing and taking.

Well, he has been known as a strong defender of Islam in the past, whenever debate about the issue came up on talk shows, etc.

I wonder if this is why so many liberals defend Islam. The men think it will grant them more groping rights. The women think "Well, I'm already being groped. I'll bet they're probably much nicer".

If I understand it correctly, he was blocking her only way out. But so what if he was? It was in a public place. She could have screamed or something. It's not like he had her cornered in a dark alley somewhere with no witnesses.

523 It's a myth that people in bygone days were less literate than today. They were probably more literate.

I think we're talking past each other. I was using in a general "percentage of the population can read" sense-- lower classes, with no education? Nah. Upper classes, yes.

Of the educated classes, I bet they were more studied and familiar with the Western canon on even we are.

That being said, I assume the printing press made literacy much more common among the masses, and then the computer and Internet did similar. But this is getting to angels on the heads of a pin, unless I'm misunderstanding.

could probably get multiple bullets fired before the first echo would be

weapons. Speed of sound is roughly 1125 fps.

Time stamps on hotel video, don't agree with what the police timeline says happened.

Heard something about errors in the timing on the hotel systems. Entirely plausible. I mean the comments here happen 6 minutes in the past. Not being snarky, time is a bitch on those kinds of systems, daylight time isn't always automatic for example.

BUT - the timing differences should be consistent on the same system. Comments here are ALWAYS 6 minutes in the past. So if the phone system is out of whack, you make a call now, see what the timestamp is, and you adjust the record.

Perhaps not, but if you can you're better off marrying some rich guy for money than some loser for his pecs. At least in the end you get security. It's not until you have security either by being educated and hardworking or some other way that it's smart to trade in a husband with money and/or a good education and career for the energetic young mute I'd keep in the poolhouse. There's a new neighbor down the street who has married and reproduced with a younger hotter fireman. He's as dumb as a rock, she's not. But she's worried constantly about her kids because she's always working and they're half rock-dumb.

I disagree.

Even taken one of those "8th grade tests from 1884" on line.??? Those things are hard.

I also would point to letters written home by Civil War Soldiers. The mastery of the language, vocabulary and sentence structure is way better than anything the public school system churns out today. Some of them are truly poetic.

I would put a one room country school 8th grade class from that era up against any public shool middle school class from today on just about any topic.

538 >>I think they were fully aware of the deal. The execution may have been
grosser than they expected, but I don't think a single one of them
didn't know what the barter terms were. After all, to get to the point
where they were meeting with Weinstein, they'd probably done the same on
the way up the ladder.

I get it, it's not like the casting couch was unknown. However, after reading about Harvey's predatory, abusive behavior, I am less inclined to pass it off as women getting what they deserved because they likely expected transactional sex at some point in exchange for stardom.

As for Sivan, I would factor in the shock (think I would freeze - like, WTF, is this really happening?) as well as knowing what pissing off Weinstein could do. That's the thing - it wasn't just have sex or don't, it was have sex or I'll destroy you and you'll never work here again. There are women who understood that, rebuffed him, and left Hollywood. But let's not ignore that the offers cam not only with promises, but threats.

"The young students are asked to learn the following names and words: Cos, Duque, Morales, Romero, Sesma, Gaona, Deguelo, Santa Ana, Alamo. They are also taught that "Thermophylae had its messenger! The Alamo had none." is inscribed on the building.

It's stunning to compare and contrast this small school book with what passes for "learning" now. And my grandfather had to leave school young to work, after his father died. Became a home builder and electrician, and worked at Cape Canaveral."

We remember that people used to poke fun at those who only had an 8th grade education - the sad fact is that someone who made it through the 8th grade in the 1920's probably had a much more comprehensive education than most with Bachelor's degrees have today.
