They don't really intellectualize these ideas logically, And the ones who do, take pride in their 'holding two conflicting ideas in their heads'. Like it's a mark of pride or some shit.

It's all just tactics. They oppose the cops. They oppose guns. They just choose which to focus on at any given second.

Los Angeles Times (@latimes) October 7, 2017

Say what? The reason these laws were enacted to begin with is that an HIV-infected person is, in fact, a public health issue.
By the way, the measure also applies to those who give blood without telling the blood bank that they are HIV-positive. That's just wonderful.

______________

The CA HIV thing is not as bad as it appears.

CA already had a law on the book making it a misdemeanor to knowingly give an infectious disease to another person.

When AIDS first came to public attention back in the '80's, there was lots of panic over it spreading, so lots of states, including CA, made it a felony to knowingly spread it.

So in essence, CA law had singled out HIV carriers for harsher punishment than other carriers of infectious diseases who knowingly passed their diseases on to unsuspecting others.

The new law puts HIV carriers back into the same category as other carriers of infectious diseases who knowingly infect others. It will now be a misdemeanor offense in CA to knowingly infect another, or to knowingly donate contaminated blood without disclosing your disease status.

As for whether or not this is sound public policy, I leave that to CA citizens to decide. HIV is still very expensive to treat, so there may have been some utility to punishing knowing transmission of HIV more harshly than other infectious diseases, some of which can be cured or treated more easily and cheaply than HIV. Also, it is pretty well known that there are some twisted people who actually seek out HIV infection (at the so-called "bug chasing" parties), in order to qualify themselves for various types of government aid, and/or inclusion in the HIV-infected community. Maintaining the felony penalty may have dissuaded that type of activity. (Or not, who knows?). Just saying that there were valid public policy arguments for leaving the law as it was, just as there were valid arguments for changing it.

But I still object to the defenders of the new law trying to justify it by saying that HIV-carriers should not be treated as criminals. The old law never made it a crime merely to have HIV; it made it a crime to KNOWINGLY infect someone else with HIV. Those are two very different things, and should not be conflated.

So.... moral of the story.... perhaps the white bedwetting social do gooders should just sit the hell down and shut the hell up for once.

Wish that were true. But Romans 13:4 says: "But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer."

God's wrath acts against he wrongdoer here and now. If scripture shows anything, God enacts his completions over time. We are creatures of time. We need time to observe and reflect and learn. The current generation would learn nothing if God simply shut up his wrath 2000 years ago. We need constant reminders of the depravity of Man and the Lord's rejection of that depravity.

============

I think population density and resource allocation was an issue. Those copper deposits were way the hell away from the big civilizations in Central America. The Inca were able t develop Copper and Bronze technology IIRC. In North America, the issue was population density: A lot of wide flat spaces with not a lot of people there compared to the Fertile Cresent and the Nile Valley. That means it takes much longer for a new group to come in and build on a previous groups's accomplisments. That IMHO, along with lack of natural resources explains why the Mississippean peoples were in a Neolithic phase (6 or 7000 years behind the Spanish) of development when Europeans made contact. I think is also helps explain why the Incans and Mesoamericans were 4000 and 5000 years behind the Spanish as well. Lack of draft animals also made long distance trade routes difficult (but not impossible, I might add).

I'd sure like to hear what the shot security guard has to say, most especially whether he radioed immediately that he had been shot. All security officers are equipped with radios.

BURN THE HERETIC

353 >>It seems the resource most lacking in indigenous North Americans was curiosity.

Same problems with liberals. Like zero curiosity into the actual history of our indigenous friends.

Take the comanches. Vicious and incredibly cruel fighters that routinely tortured and killed men, women and children including babies in horrific ways like burning alive, cutting off genitals disemboweling and of course, scalping. Women and children were often taken as slaves or baby mommas for young warriors and many were sold into slavery in Mexico. One of the more prominent Comanche chiefs, Quana Parker, was the son of a Comanche chief and a kidnapped white woman, Cynthia Parker. She ended up starving herself to death when she was rescued because she couldn't re-adpat to her former life.

And they were driving settlers back hundreds of miles with constant raids and murders. Had it not been for the invention of repeating weapons they might not have been defeated for a long, long time if ever in some areas.

They were violent, murderous people who had zero interest in co-existing and so they were defeated. And women everywhere should be thrilled because while Comanche men were great at hunting and killing that's pretty much all they did. The women, who did not have a 19th Amendment, were considered far inferior and were left to do most of the actual work for the tribe. How enlightened.

But liberals don't know this because they are stupid or lazy or ignorant or dishonest or all of the above.

Well, the first story about guard interrupting shooting was a lie.

Now we're being told that the guard was shot before the shooting started.

How do we know this is not a lie?

Can someone ask the guard?

Also... a few days ago, someone suggested that the visit of the guard pushed up the timeline.

IF there were fireworks at the end of the show (possibly, he does have pyro on the tour) that would have been the time to do the shooting.

No one would have heard the shots due to the pyro.

However, the security guard mucked things up by appearing.

Perhaps those six minutes were spent debating what to do, and changing the Plan.

374 I think population density and resource allocation was an issue.

Posted by: Jackal at October 10, 2017 12:19 PM (PfVnd)

Northern Chile, certainly within trading range of the Incan Empire, has huge copper resources, and given the desert nature of the area, probably a lot of native copper in the upper parts of the deposits. Also, there is tin in Bolivia. And the Incas had gold, a lot of gold.

American natives used what they found, be it metal, or tree bark, or whalebone, but it seems they never made the intellectual leap of learning to make new structural materials by messing around with fire and ores. That same lack of of cultural curiosity explains the lack of wheels and of draft animals. Simply put: they were in a rut.

They spent way more on a new construction under the theory that it will be less maintenance.

Of course, a year later, the shitty pergo flooring is popping all over their house, the kitchen faucet from home depot already broke, and the cheapo hollow doors have holes in them because they have two young sons who do what young boys do and break shit.

383 And women everywhere should be thrilled because while Comanche men were
great at hunting and killing that's pretty much all they did. The women,
who did not have a 19th Amendment, were considered far inferior and
were left to do most of the actual work for the tribe. How enlightened.
--

So, in reality, the Comanche men were ultra liberated, and TRUSTED the women to run their society. In fact, they depended on their women to rule them. The Comanche women built their civilization.

THIS is why we celebrate Native Americans!!! They are VASTLY superior to men from Europe!!!

Yeah, well, and when I upgrade my bathroom (for example), I spent the extra money (less than $1000 all in) to buy quality building materials instead of the cheap, chinese made, bottom of the line stuff they sell at home depot.

Yes, it is great that you can get a faucet for $24 at home depot. But I'd rather spend, say, $75 and get something that I think looks better and not have to worry about replacing it a few years after I bought it.

Same with the tiles and the shower (and especially the shower door -- if you cheap out there, you're definitely going to be ripping and replacing in a few years when you discover your shower has been leaking water since it was basically new). Not a huge amount of money to spend up front to avoid having to do the job twice.

Vic, I have friends who live in Northern Ca in the wine country and other's who live in the eastern valley and ranch areas. They don't vote for Democrats every election and they were Trump voters. They try to live a normal, family oriented American life, including the couple that own ten acres of grapes in the wine country that they have spent a decade nurturing to sell to winemakers for a 10% profit. Who hunt and fish and go to the local high school baseball games. And who are horribly outnumbered as far as getting a voice in their state government by the illegals and liberals in San Francisco, Sacremento, and LA. So far, all in Northern CA are safe as far as the fire goes, although far from unaffected as they live close to the communities that are burning.

404 Northern Chile, certainly within trading range of the Incan Empire, has huge copper resources, and given the desert nature of the area, probably a lot of native copper in the upper parts of the deposits.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon, survivor of GNAMM at October 10, 2017 12:35 PM (O848g)

True, they were all culturally primative, which stunted them. They were all basically still animists and there was no outside stimulus to evolve beyond that, though I think the Incas were on the path to do so, they had draft animals and bronze technology. IOW, they actually did take advantage of those deposits. I think it was only a matter of time before someone put 2 and 2 together as it were. I think the Incans were the exception to the rule. And yeah in North America (Spec. the Great Lakes Regions and the far north) the naitives were perfectly adept at exploiting native "float" copper and nickel-iron meteorites.

The problem is that a lot of these developers are in churn and burn mode and to keep the price of the house somewhat affordable, they skimp on materials. Labor is pretty fixed cost -- it doesn't cost more in labor to use plywood over osb board for a subfloor, but it does cost more in materials.

1. Second shooter leaves 32nd floor by stairwell. Can't use elevator because rifle and ammo in elevator/hotel lobby might bother people. Opening stairwell sets off alarm.

2. Security guard arrives to investigate alarm. Hears Paddock drilling - uses pass key to enter room. (Hotel doors don't stay open by themselves) Paddock sees him and what ever the original plan was - is now busted. Shoots security guard - who wounded - retreats to near elevator. Calls in he has been shot.

3. Paddock goes to back up plan - talking to second shooter - who is still going down stairs. Busts out window for second shooter - but they decide he is better off shooting from ground level - too long to climb back up. Paddock breaks out own window in room where guns are and starts firing at crowd. This takes 6 minutes.

4. Second shooter takes a few minutes more to get into position and joins in.
Video with shooting sounds clearly shows second shooter firing 3 shot bursts out of rhythm and not synced with Paddock's continuous shooting, and occurring at the same time. Forensic analysis of sounds shows second shooter involved.

You can kind of see it in members of my family as well. Hell as a kid, I looked fairly Indian: Skinny as hell, dark skin, and straight black hair. Those tribes didn't die out, they just got absorbed.

434 404 Vic, I have friends who live in Northern Ca in the
wine country and other's who live in the eastern valley and ranch areas.
They don't vote for Democrats every election and they were Trump
voters. They try to live a normal, family oriented American life,
including the couple that own ten acres of grapes in the wine country
that they have spent a decade nurturing to sell to winemakers for a 10%
profit. Who hunt and fish and go to the local high school baseball
games. And who are horribly outnumbered as far as getting a voice in
their state government by the illegals and liberals in San Francisco,
Sacremento, and LA. So far, all in Northern CA are safe as far as the
fire goes, although far from unaffected as they live close to the
communities that are burning.

I used to live in the same general area, but down in Castro Valley. At least up there in the wine country you had some farmers and farmers are always conservative. I used to get into some big arguments. But in the early 70s when I was there it wasn't bad at all up in the wine country. Don't know how any of it is now. but back in the 70s a Republican could still be elected statewide. That appears to be all but impossible now.

But I left as soon as I could and moved back to GA.

435 I wouldn't really mind an American Indian holiday--and I don't mean Thanksgiving! But it would be all poisonous identity politics at this point.

Leftists ruin everything.

437 They don't really intellectualize these ideas logically, And the ones who do, take pride in their 'holding two conflicting ideas in their heads'. Like it's a mark of pride or some shit.

---
There actually is a value of holding conflicting ideas in your head. It's an intellectual skill. However, when we get to liberals, it's mostly a cargo-cult intellectualism.

The trick is to treat the disparate ideas as tensions. Thus tensions always need to be regarded in terms of their ends.

That's the part that most liberals fail at. Is the early resolution and over-simplification of a dynamic tension. That's because (I think) they have a sort of belief that as liberals, they ARE intellectuals.

We could talk about the dynamic between racist cops and the risk of private weapon ownership. However, it's obvious to anybody who has analysis on the outside, that's an ambiguous resolution. Liberals can't have that. In the long run we all are dead. You have to immanentize the eschaton. What we want? Whatever it is, Now!!

So they end up stupidly demanding conflicting things. Tensions always suggest ambiguity and give-and-take--just in the practice of their consideration (regardless of how worthwhile either principle is). This doesn't sit with the zero-tolerance action-now mentality of liberal crusaders.

The tension between freedom and optimum balance will never be wiped away by a "solution". So, however, fascinating it is to contemplate how those two forces interact, they are no use to the revolutionary--and Marx said that the revolutionary is greater than the philosopher (intellectual).

So, as I mentioned above, the rank-and-file left is engaged in cargo-cult liberalism. If they promote the trappings of intellectualism, maybe intellectualism will come. Just like the actual cargo cultist islanders believed that assembling some facsimile of a cargo cache and air strip would bring the planes from civilization.

438 It looks like there's an argument here over whether Indians were Stone Age or not. Working small amounts of found metals, invariably soft metals like gold and copper, doesn't make you part of the metallic age starting with Bronze in Euro (and I assume Oriental) terms. This is p.c. excuse making below but face it, they were Stone Age in practical terms. And frankly making pyramids etc. without hard-wearing metals is pretty impressive even if space aliens levitated the heavy stones for you!

From a McGill University page...
Modern use of the term [Stone Age]

One problem with the term is that it implies that human advancement and time periods in prehistory are only measured by the type of tool material most widely used, rather than, for example, type of social organisation, food sources exploited, or adaption to harsh climates. This is a product of the level of knowledge of the distant past during the nineteenth century when the three age system was developed, a time when finds of artefacts were the main goal of an archaeological excavation. Modern archaeological techniques stress a wider collection of information that has expanded our knowledge of prehistory and rendered neat divisions such as the term 'Stone Age' increasingly obsolete. We now know that the changes in past societies over the millennia were complex and involved multiple factors such as the adoption of agriculture, settlement or religion and that tool use is just one unrepresentative indicator of a society's practices and beliefs.

Another problem connected with the term Stone Age is that it was created to describe the archaeological cultures of Europe, and that it is inconvenient to use it in relation to regions such as some parts of the Americas and Oceania, where farmers or hunter-gatherers used stone for tools until European colonisation began. Metal-working was a much less important part of people's lives there and it is more useful to use other terms when dividing prehistory in those areas. The same incongruence applies to the Iron Age worldwide, because in the Americas iron (but not copper, silver or gold) was unknown until 1492, in Oceania until the 17th century.

A Stone Age was usually followed by a Bronze Age, during which metalworking technology allowed bronze (copper and tin or other metals) tools to become more common. The transition out of the Stone Age occurred between 6000 BC and 2500 BC for much of humanity living in North Africa, Asia and Europe. In some regions, such as Subsaharan Africa, the Stone Age was followed directly by an Iron Age. It is generally believed that the Middle East and southeastern Asian regions progressed past Stone Age technology around 6000 BC. Europe, and the rest of Asia became post-Stone Age societies by about 4000 BC. The proto-Inca cultures of South America continued at a Stone Age level until around 2000 BC, when gold, copper and silver made their entrance, the rest following later. Australia remained in the Stone Age until the 17th century.

We also now know that the transition from a Stone Age to a Bronze Age was not a neat switch but a long, gradual process involving the working of gold and copper at what are technically Neolithic sites. This "transition" period is known as the Copper age or Chalcolithic. It was a short and more a regional development, because alloying tin with copper began quite soon, except in regions lacking tin. Otzi the Iceman for instance, a mummy from about 3300 BC carried with him a copper axe and a flint knife. Stone tool manufacture also continued long into the succeeding metal-using ages, possibly even until the Early Middle Ages. In Europe and North America, millstones were in use until deep the 20th century, and still are in many parts of the world.

439 Joys of being olderness. A subject to which I can relate!

My nose-hair trimmer doesn't get a lot of use, but when one of those misbegotten follicles pops out, I'm grateful I have it. I can't stand to have even one hair tickling my nostril.

Those folks who want these fake hairs must be on the same burnout level as those little starving impoverished kids who can't even brush the flies off their faces.
