538 Statistician: "I Used to Think Gun Control Was the Answer. My Research Told Me Otherwise."

America's Garbage Pile newspaper, the Washington Post, only lets you view a few of their dreck stories every month. Which is fine, because there are so few worth reading.

However, this is a new month, and you probably have a few free reads to your credit. If so, use one to read the only worthwhile story they're likely to publish this month.

Before I started researching gun deaths, gun-control policy used to frustrate me. I wished the National Rifle Association would stop blocking common-sense gun-control reforms such as banning assault weapons, restricting silencers, shrinking magazine sizes and all the other measures that could make guns less deadly.

Then, my colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States, and I wound up frustrated in a whole new way. We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

I researched the strictly tightened gun laws in Britain and Australia and concluded that they didn’t prove much about what America's policy should be. Neither nation experienced drops in mass shootings or other gun related-crime that could be attributed to their buybacks and bans. Mass shootings were too rare in Australia for their absence after the buyback program to be clear evidence of progress. And in both Australia and Britain, the gun restrictions had an ambiguous effect on other gun-related crimes or deaths.

When I looked at the other oft-praised policies, I found out that no gun owner walks into the store to buy an "assault weapon." It’s an invented classification that includes any semi-automatic that has two or more features, such as a bayonet mount, a rocket-propelled grenade-launcher mount, a folding stock or a pistol grip. But guns are modular, and any hobbyist can easily add these features at home, just as if they were snapping together Legos.

As for silencers -- they deserve that name only in movies, where they reduce gunfire to a soft puick puick. In real life, silencers limit hearing damage for shooters but don’t make gunfire dangerously quiet. An AR-15 with a silencer is about as loud as a jackhammer. Magazine limits were a little more promising, but a practiced shooter could still change magazines so fast as to make the limit meaningless.

As my co-workers and I kept looking at the data, it seemed less and less clear that one broad gun-control restriction could make a big difference.

She talks about some "interventions" she think could work. For example: 2/3rds of all gun deaths are actually suicides; if you want to reduce suicide by guns, you should just increase suicide prevention efforts.

Another large swath of gun deaths are to young males involved in street crime. If you want to reduce that, you beef up programs to reduce street crime and intervene with at-risk youth and you identify gangsters and you target them for gun-checks. Or that kind of thing.

What progressives mean when they talk about "common sense gun safety laws" is simple widespread gun confiscation. They claim they don't want that, and yet, every time this issue comes up, they point to Australian and Britain as models of what we should do -- countries in which there was a state-enforced near-complete involuntary disarmament of the population.

So which is it, progs? Do you want full-on confiscation or not?

As for the bump stock, I don't want them banned but they're more a novelty than anything else and, from what I understand, make the weapon more difficult to control. They can also be improvised from rubber bands, belts, and other common items.

I think conservatives still have the upper hand in this debate.

Here's a suggestion: why not trade the bump stocks for suppressors? Put the former into the 1934 NFA, and take the latter out. The bump stocks are basically toys that let one legally experience the thrill of firing an assault rifle in full auto mode, but they are basically useless for hunting or serious target shooting. And those that really, really want one can still ante up the two hundred bucks for the tax stamp and jump through the NFA hoops to get one.

But suppressors are useful to anyone who shoots rifles or pistols (revolvers excepted). Mainly to protect the shooters' own hearing. A lot more utility to the average shooter than a bump stock.

I use Century link for my dsl internet. I still have a land line bc of dad. They charge me 30 bucks a month on the phone bill. I had rented a router until that one took a shit, they had to replace it and there has been no charge for that since. I think the router rental was 7 per month. But then they replace their equipment for free.

I think this is probably the first murder or crime in general in which a bump stock was used.

IIRC, after the NFA (1934 or whenever the hell), only one class 3 full auto weapon was used in a crime, and that was by some LEO. I think I remember that.

Look into buying your own router. Your service provider should have a list of compatible modems and you should have no problem finding one, I have Time Warner/Spectrum and got a compatible modem at Wal-mart. The Modem rental is like $5-10 a month and you should be able to get a modem for around $100, so even if it is a bit more than that you'll have essentially paid it off in about a year.

Of course they want this. The Left in this country is totalitarian in ideology, which is why they are so dirty and underhanded when it comes to elections and why they want millions of illegal aliens to become voters. They want power, and they fear regular Americans who they know don't want their awful policies. Guns are an equalizer in this; take away the average man's way of protecting himself, you make a nation of serfs.

I find it instructive to note that the first real firearms restrictions in modern British history was in 1903 (the Pistols Act), about the same time the British Empire began to fall apart.

252 Widespread gun confiscation is simply a cover for genocide.

The left knows that confiscation will result in hundreds of thousands of deaths of (1) gun owners and (2) rural citizens and (3) some law enforcement. All of those are their most hated targets - so yeah, they want all of us dead and will think that a few hundred thousand is a good start.

The Left is Evil, Tyrannical, and Genocidal.

267 The scam is to call for "common sense gun control", get the normies to nod in agreement and thus force the conversation to begin because our politicians have no convictions and can't appear uncaring, right? Then they can, rightly, reject most actual measures as ineffective until they think they have got our side to offer up as much as they think they can get this time. Then they agree while still loudly exclaiming it 'isn't enough' and children will die. Wait for another mass shooting, proclaim "I told you so!", repeat.

And it almost worked once, remember when concealed carry was unheard of, owning handguns was illegal in vast portions of the country, etc? It was only the dedication and cunning of the NRA that rolled it back last time.

Pass a law, party line vote is fine, that any new gun limiting law has to be enforced by the congress critters who voted for it. Not the cops, not the IRS, not the military. 314 The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

Actually, most gun crimes involve a pretty specific demographic ... and they usually aren't wielding legal guns, to begin with.

But, just as they have done with Child "Protective" Services and schools taking over the kids' lives, and all sorts of other problems, the real issue almost always lies with a specific demographic but they try to take the freedoms away from everyone so that they don't have to point that out.

Gun deaths: 33K per year. Factor out suicides. That's 2/3 of them right there, so that's about 11K.

The brunt of those are handguns. Oh, look up the FBI homicide data. Rifles, shotguns, and "other guns" total less than 100 homicides per year.

I remember, as a kid, that handguns were the target of the gun banners back then. They were being logical. They were, and still are, the most oft used firearm by far.

384 FYI - here in Australia there are plenty of guns. Not one per person like the US estimates are, but still plenty. And that's just the registered guns. There was an amnesty recently to hand in unregistered firearms that punters might have "forgotten" to register.

30,000 guns got handed in.

Suicide by gun dropped dramatically here since 96 and as someone who had a mate check out via shotgun, that's something meaningful to me personally. Still blows to be treated like a criminal just because I like the range and eradicating feral pests though.

The point is that there is a tonne of weapons that never got registered in the first place and somehow those dastardly criminals always seem to have them when they do nefarious things. Even though they all have criminal records. Go figure.

Sorry for the novel.

Sorry for your loss in Vegas recently

I have a possible solution to future gun control (cough confiscation
cough) laws. Pass a law, party line vote is fine, that any new gun
limiting law has to be enforced by the congress critters who voted for
it. Not the cops, not the IRS, not the military. The anti-constitutional
clowns who voted for it have to go door to door demanding that any guns
be given to them at once. Oh, and the 'enforcers' have to rely on
Obamacare. The entertainment value would be off the scale. For extra
fun, include the MFM and their 'experts' as part of the enforcement.

It could be called the Bell the Cat law.
