Friday Night ONT: Safe Spaces Edition

Hello guys and gals, welcome to the Friday ONT. I WAS going to talk about Steven Crowder's Antifa sting, but Ace had to go and post a (deserved) whole thread on it, so that's out. Not to step on OM's wonderful book thread, but this gave me a chuckle:

Now to wipe that smile off your face. Lena Dunham Thinking About Developing Hillary's Self-Pitying Book Into Movie

You're welcome.

Staged?

I don't really care. I laughed.

It's a tent. They literally “invented” a tent. And they want $99 for it. A tent. They could buy this one for a fraction of the cost, and it's more appropriate to their intellectual and emotional development level.

Frozen.jpg

But that's not the best part. Go back and watch it again. There is not one person in that video, not one, that looks like they are capable of changing the oil in their car, or even a flat. This guy doesn't look like he's capable of fathering that baby, much less raising it.

PP1.jpg

This guy is so clueless that he set up his Pause Pad to relax right next to his bed

PP2.jpg

This guy plopped his open in the middle of the office, just so he could have a safe space to eat his banana. Also he seems to be wearing a bib.

pp3.jpg

And you just KNOW that this guy is masturbating furiously.

PP4.jpg

NONE of these people look like they are capable of functioning as productive members of society. Not one.

BTW, the Twitter thread responding to this clip is pure gold. I laughed for ten minutes reading the replies, and I wasn't half finished.

Sully Speaks

America Wasn’t Built for Humans

An article by Andrew Sullivan. It's long, 7200 words, and he get's a lot of the causes completely wrong, but I believe it to be honest, and he is dead smack on in identifying one of the biggest, if not the biggest, problem facing America today: Tribalism.

Now, I've never been a big Andrew Sullivan fan. In the past I have found his work to too often be a trite restatement of the worst bromides of the left. He calls himself a conservative, but his underlying assumptions are pure progressivism and he never challenges the left-wing narrative as being anything other then the gospel truth. Nowhere has that been more true than in this article, where he prattles on and on about things like the long discredited “southern strategy” and blames Barry Goldwater for “radicalizing” politics in America(!). However, he also tries to be fair and is critical of Democrat policies as well. He even mentions (negatively) Critical Theory and the Frankfort School (I was jumping up and down metaphorically at that point, waving my arms and screaming “It's right there! That's what you're looking for!” ) in passing. This is perhaps the most offensive passage in the article:

The myths that helped us unite as a nation began to fray. We once had a widely accepted narrative of our origins, shared icons that defined us, and a common pseudo-ethnicity — “whiteness” — into which new immigrants were encouraged to assimilate.

That right there is the biggest problem with discussing things with the few intellectual leftists that you can find looking for an honest argument. The “diagnosis” is spot on, but the “cause” is completely specious. The common pseudo-ethnicity that bound society together has always been “American” and the idea that anyone who adopted our common ideals could belong. That was “our” tribe. Yes, the US has a troubled racial history, but that history has always been one of moving towards more inclusiveness, of realizing the ideal that anyone could become a member, and if some people were being denied that because of the color of their skin or their gender or their religious beliefs, then that had to change. We were progressing towards that ideal, sometimes faster, sometimes slower (you never reach an ideal, you can only strive to get as close as possible), until the Cultural Marxists upset the applecart. They consciously and intentionally set out to destroy the American pseudo-ethnicity and replace it with exactly the tribalism that Andy decries in the article. The endgame is the complete destruction of the ideal that is America in order to replace it with a Marxist Utopia. They've been remarkably successful so far.

In any event, this got a bit long on me for an ONT, and I apologize, but for those interested in this stuff the article is worth a read. It's that rarest of beasts: An honest leftist who wants to discuss the actual issues and facts based upon an (at least superficial) desire to preserve America.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by Pennywise:

The Yahoo Group floats. They all float.

81 The myths that helped us unite as a nation began to fray. We once had a widely accepted narrative of our origins, shared icons that defined us, and a common pseudo-ethnicity -- "whiteness" -- into which new immigrants were encouraged to assimilate.

I am increasingly seeing "whiteness" and "white supremacy" used as euphemisms for "those who are opposed to socialism".

They pay for themselves and a lot more via the increased Economic activity and therefore increased tax revenues. We even have anecdotal evidence for this fact, see Reagan, Ronald, 1982-1988.

Don't expect this to ever be factored in by the CBO or any freaking "think tank" though.

The DC shitheads all think that if you cut taxes, that there will be less money for them to spend.

Of course, in the first year there is less money because the tax dollars coming in drop in the initial year because they are just then being put into the economy. It's the years after when tax receipts go up because more people are working and contributing to the economy.

According to the DC shitheads, tax cuts must be paid for with defense cuts and increased government spending in other areas.

This comes from the decision years ago to have the CBO score all tax bills as being "revenue neutral" over a ten year period using a static analysis. Thus if you cut tax rates somewhere you must either raise rates somewhere else or cut spending.

The static method is total junk, but it is junk they religiously follow. I suspect that Trump has jiggered his tax proposal so that it meets the CBO's requirements while at the same time causing economic growth which will raise more revenue, than the junk analysis says, that Congress adheres to as their god.

That law school dean and many of the profs at that college are such bigots that they believe that blacks never held those values. And they get away with this crap and have a bunch of today's black millennials echoing that calling for a return to bourgeois values is "white supremacism"

Also unfortunately it was against the 49ers, and I think it was 49-7 when we left in the third quarter.

He ate about six of the latter, then walked over to a serving cart, pulled the carrot pieces out of his mouth and left them on the cart's bottom shelf. I larfed.

I know people who have worked in Dubai.

Basically, they hire everything out, and things cost a lot more, since they have all their teams working independently from each other.

Dubai is a place where Europeans and Canadians go to make money when they're tired of dealing with the bizarro regulations in China.

The NFL announced today that for financial reasons the had to eliminate one team. They decided to combine Green Bay and Tampa Bay into one team causing many layoffs and saving millions in costs. They will be known as the TAMPACKS. Unfortunately they're only good for one period and have no second string.

Hard to know what's going to be worth money. I would not have predicted that my copy of the first Robotman comic book and my copy of Florence Lin's Book of Noodles, Dumplings, and Breads would someday be a scarce commodity. Both are very trashed from frequent use, and I wouldn't part with either.

What the hell kind of ignorance is that he's saying?

Assets are assets. You just subtract what you owe from them and get your net worth.

And those assets he's paying on generated liquid taxable income of $150 million in 2014 (or whenever it was that Rachel Maddow was going on about).

455 I have yet to hear an explanation how tax cuts need to be 'paid for'.

Posted by: Puddleglum at September 29, 2017 10:16 PM (pY+s4)

Just another way that the Dem/Media complex twist our language. Tax cuts have to be "paid for" because the hacks believe that all the money belongs to them and what isn't taxed is what they "pay" us. It works with the LIV's because they think they earned those welfare checks, and with people who think giving the government interest free loans in the form of tax overpayments that gets refunded to them is "free money"

Then you have the scam called "program cuts" which are always reductions in the expected increases over the previous year. So if they expected 10 billion more over the previous fiscal year and get 5 billion more, that's a 5 billion dollar "cut"

516 CaliGirl, LOL

The Scorps were one of these then-cutting-edge bands my sister Cindy was into. She was an early adopter of a lot of bands that were about to find stardom.

Anyway, at first I hated them, then the songs got drilled into my head (she wouldn't stop playing the Breakout album) and after awhile, I kind of liked it.

Now I have the CD. ;-)

523 It's kind of a long story, but in 1982 I had the opportunity to DJ a half-hour show on UC Irvine's college radio station, KUCI, in the middle of the night.

You can tell I was still scared of my own teenage shadow by the choices of songs I played. I still remember my exact playlist:

- Go-Gos, We Got The Beat
- Rick Springfield, What Kind Of Fool Am I
- J Geils Band, Freeze Frame
- Journey, Still They Ride
- Asia, Heat Of The Moment
- Fleetwood Mac, Hold Me
- 38 Special, Caught Up In You
- Human League, Don't You Want Me

Oh man, I so wish I could do it over again. I would have chosen *so much differently.*

Nice! Watching it so far, I can't get over how great Tina Weymouth is, at exactly the job of being the Talking Heads' bassist. Never got much into her later stuff, except for a guilty pleasure sort of enjoyment of Genius of Love. The live versions always seem to have some intolerable guy talking into a microphone.

Being an old fart, I consider '65 to '75 the golden decade of rock music. So much good music and new genres that has never been even approached since. Not to diss the '80's but it seemed that rock had to get its breath back after the preceding golden decade.

Disco didn't help matters any, either.

I'm nervous in terms of affording children and my wife is high risk for pregnancy so that weighs on me. If money and health weren't a factor I'd be chilling ha!

I realized I needed to make a change for me so I've cut WAAAAAY back on drinking, started cleaning my diet up again and lifting weights. I can't have any children, cousins, siblings be better than me until I retire and I'm too young for that.

Glad to hear you and yours are doing well.

606 Over at Breitbart it looks like Bannon is gearing up and planting the seeds that hopefully, someday, will either reclaim the Republican party or start a new party.

So that's 2 good things this week.

There is also a story over there I knew was coming, but didn't expect at a kid's school. I won't go into detail, but I pray the courts will strike it down. Evil is evil...adults can choose. But for children...reprehensible. Sickening.

Still don't understand a lot of his lyrics, but hey, Flower Power!

Saw Yes back in the '80's during the Trevor Rabin/Talk tour. Got to listen to the monitor mix transmitted over FM into the arena. It was memorable because he had a brain freeze on one song and couldn't remember his own lyrics that he wrote. A good laugh was had by him and the crowd and the rest of the show was typically awesome Yes.

More good times...

646 Funny the talk turned to music. I just put my entire Mp3 collection on Plex. Man, that's been a chore. We're talking thousands of songs that go back maybe 20 years, from all sources. Ripped CDs, Napster, downloads, ripped from YouTube...it was a mess. Plex is really particular about how it catalogs songs, so I had to use an Mp3 tag editor on almost every file. I just made sure the title, artist and album artist were correct, I didn't bother getting the albums right, but at least with those 3 tags correct they are all sorted correctly by artist. Strangely enough, the punk library does have the albums correct, but while Plex automatically downloads pictures of the artists for each folder, it doesn't for the albums*, so I had to GIS the album covers and assign them all individually. Maybe someday I'll get the rock songs connected to their albums, but probably not, it's a lot of work.

As it is, wherever I'm at in my house now, I just call up Plex on my phone, Chromecast it to the nearest TV and hit shuffle, and that's all I really want to do. My home life has a soundtrack now.

*It does assign art, but most of it isn't the correct art. Well, it's not like there is a correct picture for "unknown album", which is how most songs are grouped under each artist, but it doesn't even reuse the artist's photo, which would be logical. I have NO idea HOW it decides what pictures to use, but it's weird. I'm not kidding, probably 60% of the songs display the cover art for the soundtrack to the 1986 movie 'About Last Night'. Really. Not a clue why Plex decided on that.

Surrender! Not a bad song, but man, every time I hear it I want to beat Robin Zander about the head and neck with a rhyming thesaurus! The verses don't rhyme, they almost rhyme. And then the last verse does rhyme. Make up your mind! GRRRRR! Drives me nuts!

Posted by: Weirddave at September 30, 2017 01:35 AM (Nyyc4)

690 The awful thing about cassettes was if the tape got tangled in the cassette player. You had to be super careful to untangle it without breaking the tape. Then it was get a pencil and wind the tape back onto the cassette spools. Once it happened with a particular tape the tape was always a bit crinkled which made it more likely it would happen again.

Badfinger's original of "Without You" is *much better* than Nilsson's huge hit remake, IMHO.

693 Cheap Trick was the Proto 1987-1990 Opening Act all over the Tri-State area (NY NJ CT).

I love that everywhere has a "Tri-State" area. For me they were VT-NH-ME and PA-DE-NJ. There were a couple more in places I didn't live as long and don't remember.

697 Kindltot, I always like to bring up about Romeo Void:

Their biggest hit, "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Dangerous Thing)," was intended as a *response song* to...

"Billie Jean," by MJ.

If you listen to them back-to-back, you can hear how they sound similar, at least in terms of the backbeat.

Hahahaha! Yeah. Also, the repeated use of "rolling" in the same line... but... like with some of the greatest rock/pop songs, it's the execution that counts and the flawed, ugly or awkward bits are what makes it ROCK.

I had iTunes once delete all the music I had allocated to it. I've still got a bunch of old stuff from Napster and the like that I usually move from computer to computer but never listen so its a waste. But yeah that did piss me off when the music I had downloaded and ripped from CDs was no longer there that I went to their customer service to get it all back locally, and its never deleted again. They didn't ask though if I wanted it that way. Its sort of the reverse they did when they forced that stupid U2 album onto everyone with an iPhone.

I hate the cloud with a passion.

Plex is a home media server. I have a 5TB external hard drive that I store all of my movies, TV shows and music on. Plex has it all cataloged, and it connects to the Plex ap on my phone or tablet. I can then watch or listen to any of my media anywhere I have an internet or (at home) network connection. Coupled with the Chromecast ap, I can "cast" it to any TV that has a Chromecast device attached.

773 Well, I am going to go to bed. I am tired after having done several hours worth of attic-crawling to wire up a ceiling light. Hard part is done. About another hour to hang an octagon box, run and staple the Loomex, and make connections, and my bedroom light will be controlled by a wall switch by the door, like it should be.

I will also probably try to fish a wire into an empty outlet box behind the computer table, and get that working, and put a mess of extension cords to rest.

783 Hi Carol. I am having the same problem. How have the roses done this year? I seem to recall you were having some problems with them earlier.

789 I also wondered how long until Hillary's book would be found on discount racks for a buck.

790 I'm beginning to think that we'd do well to just drop the word "tribalism" for a generation. We're doing to it what the 18th C did to "wit" and the 20th to "democracy". With luck, like wit, it can come back. (I doubt "democracy" will ever be useful again.)

Without rationally and historically justified limits to its meaning, it can designate whatever the speaker wants, and is either a demon or an idol. But then, that sort of abuse of words seems built in to humanity. Like tribalism.

Error 500 is usually caused by illegal quotation marks. Delete all quotation marks not created by Pixy and add them back with Pixy.

That error code means that some characters - usually punctuation like " ' - ; : etc are not allowed.

If you cut and paste, then convert, at link below it will automatically fix the offending characters for you

https://www.charset.org/html-special-characters

Then bring the converted text back here and it will work

796 Vic to the rescue!

Posted by: Infidel at September 30, 2017 05:29 AM (w25zc)

797 Also a lot of word processing programs will convert short dashes into long dashes. Pixy doesn't like those either.

801 I spent last evening with good people who stood reverently for the anthem and flag. It was refreshing. This morning is beautiful and my butter coffee (Community Coffee/Chicory) was excellent. Off to work so others don't have to.

For cable cutters who stream Hulu: this weekend is free HBO through them. They're pushing 'La La Land' which I started to watch last night. It's kinda okay. Not my favorite genre of films where characters inexplicably break into song and dance.

Not to judge those people who go through life inexplicably breaking into song and dance.

805 Why would a cinematic version of What Happened, produced and directed by Ms. Dunham, wipe a smile off my face?

I hope it gets made, with a huge filming budget and an equally extraordinary advertising budget.

I'm thinking its release date should be September 2019. I cannot think of a better way to ensure Mr Trump's election. In addition to being a thudding bomb and an historic box office failure, it will remind everyone of the bullet that was dodged
when the Alternate Nostril Breather was denied the Oval Office.

I'm guessing Hillary Chardonnay Clinton will play herself. Where could a casting director find an actress that matronly, that intrinsically unappealing, with cankles the diameter of fire hydrants and a voice like an electric carving knife trying to cut through aluminum siding?
