Poll: NFL's Favorability Cut Nearly In Half In a Week
I don't know what it will take to convince corporations that changing their corporate mission to becoming Full Leftist Propaganda Outfits is contrary to their business interests.
But maybe this will be instructive. The Morning Consult passed this press release to the Daily Caller:NFL's Brand Favorability Drops To Lowest Point Since Morning Consult Started Tracking: The NFL’s net favorability has dropped from 30% on September 21 to 17% on September 28. On September 21, 25% of Trump supporters said they had a very favorable view of the NFL and 11% had a very unfavorable view. As of Sept 28, those numbers have dramatically changed with 33% of Trump supporters say they have a very unfavorable view of the NFL and 16% report having a very favorable view.A little insight I got from an acquaintance (and I hope I'm not breaching trust by mentioning this): Corporations make these political decisions based mainly on ad hoc advice from their PR and HR departments. Blue employees, in other words. Who do not make their decisions based upon data -- like "What will our actual customers think about this?" I hope this is not giving away any trade secret of his, but he wound up doing such a study for a company, actually looking into who a company's customers actually were, and discovered that, as far as he knew, he was the first person to look at a company's customers' political leanings in offering advice on whether to position the company to the left on a political issue, or simply remain neutral. The first. Person. Ever. To Even. Bother. Performing data collection and analysis to inform the choice of whether a major major company should declare itself Social Justice Warrior. The rest of the time, the decision was just made based upon gut feelings (and political preferences) of their liberal middle management castes, who, I imagine, based their rigorous analysis on what Rachel Maddow said the night before. Meanwhile, a lot of blue employees are pretty determined to talk themselves out of a job. The Tennessee Titans' Delanie Walker had simple advice for those bothered by the SJW takeover of the NFL: just don't come to the games. With ticket sales already down 17.9% from week 2 to week 3, I'd say a lot of people already figured out that one for themselves. When the NFL players' salaries start getting cut because the league isn't making nearly as much money, do you think these special snowflakes will demand a federal bailout? Don't dismiss that out of hand -- after all, the NFL is already sucking millions of dollars every year from taxpayers, who happily agree to build their stadiums and give them special tax incentives, all for those exciting new job opportunities in the lucrative careers of Seasonal Parking Lot Flashlight-Waving Traffic Engineers and Part-Time Hot Dog Assembly Managers.
This fiasco may, however, open the eyes of the public to a serious and generally unchecked issue: billionaire NFL owners sponging enormous amounts of money from taxpayers through crony capitalist schemes. The fact is that a business that raked in $14 billion in revenue in 2016 is heavily subsidized by local, state, and federal money based on dubious claims about stimulating the economy.Next time the NFL comes askin' you to vote in favor of a municipal bond to build their stadium for them, or give them some local land gratis, I suggest you #TakeTheKnee yourselves.

I've been reading a lot about professional sports this week, I don't watch any of them, but there kept being little comments that people would write about them all being fixed.

They are 'entertainment' organizations and so can do whatever the hell they want.
You really have to be a fool to pay money to watch them.

A recent case of "no sale" to NFL subsidies was San Diego, where the voters did not approve a deal for a stadium to keep the Chargettes in town (a majority actually approved, but a super-majority is required on such measures).
Impossible to say for sure, but the thing might have passed if the ownership wasn't so unpopular, and deservedly so (the Spanos family really does seem like it was a one-generation thing, the father made the fortune, the son and grandson now running things demonstrate no competence in anything connected to football).
Way things are going, probably the last intelligent, or at least not disastrously stupid, vote that will prevail on any topic in any urban area of CA.

Long story short, everyone was entirely onboard until one of the older, didn't-give-a-shit-type sales directors spoke up and said, "well, er, did anyone poll our customers on this kind of stuff? I mean, what happens if we alienate a large number of our customer base? How will taking a stand impact the company's sales and my team's ability to sell?"
And, I swear to god -- everyone in the room sat there in stunned silence. I really don't think that had occurred to them. Maybe I'm not giving them enough credit, but it was ... surreal.
Long story short, the company ended up doing the smart thing and saying out of politics. But I can absolutely 100% see how a company would make the wrong decision on something like that.

I wonder. Historically, the disruptions were about money and power. Everyone understands that. This time, it's about how most of the game's players hate you. That will tend to detract from the experience.
I also think a lot of people who can't afford it spend tons of money on football because they think that's what they're supposed to do. They think everyone's having a grand old time watching the games, so they want in on the fun.
My guess is that this episode will at least partly break the spell. People will figure out that they really don't miss it all that much, and it's nice to have the time and money to spend on other things.

I was a so-so Bronco's fan. I would watch if they were on, but wouldn't really go out of my way. I watched the first game of the season. I have not watched an NFL game since. My wife is a bigger fan, if she wants to watch the game, I'll come get in on the Food Thread. Besides, I've always been a bigger baseball fan than a football fan, so Go Rockies!

Really glad you mentioned the exciting "jobs" these stadiums create. They're always breathlessly reported as creating "300 jerbs!" in the local press and 98% of them are minimum wage. They're not even full time jobs. The people running the stadium make decent money but it doesn't take many to do that job and I ought to know because the father of a friend of mine when I was a kid ran the local ballpark for the minor league baseball team. He made good money as did a few of the groundskeepers but everyone else made peanuts.

Change the game rules. Make the fuckers work harder. You only change defensive/offensive squads at the start of a new quarter. Defence gets the ball? They're now the attack and similar for offence. No more stopping the clock when not absolutely needed. Short clock on scrimmages.. run to the huddle, make a fucking call and play it, pronto, or it's a penalty. More running and playing, less strolling around. They're supposedly super athletes, let's see some mixing it up and some endurance.

Just like in video games: if you can choose total armor, AND total firepower AND total mobility, it's not really that interesting, and certainly not real world. The interesting part is the tradeoff you choose between them.

Even Lakewood Community Church where Joel Osteen preaches has quite a traditional statement of belief. I would have to see what Osteen's sermons are like. I loathed "Your best life ever" because-for one thing there was no mention of taking up the cross or suffering for Christ, and his approach always seems like "Name It and Claim It" to me, and anyone who has read my posts for a while knows my less than shrinking violet opinion of that . ;^)

I've thought that too: making teams go both ways, the way the game started, would be MUCH more interesting. With "third and long" guys and such, there's way too much specialization. (One reason I also hate the DH rule.) Make teams balance a player's offensive vs. defensive capabilities.
Just like in video games: if you can choose total armor, AND total firepower AND total mobility, it's not really that interesting, and certainly not real world. The interesting part is the tradeoff you choose between them.

Yep. It's a good game, but it's become way too specialized. Get the QB on for offence AND defence, etc, leran some new skills or get slaughtered... everyone develops alternate positions, and keep the game moving. It would be fascinating to watch. You can stick to purely offence and defence lineups and field specialists if you want, but when possession changes, they're on their own. Reduce stoppages and let fatigue enter into the equation. Also, let tacklers and blockers smash each other how they want and reduce the penalties for infringing on the receivers. Bring back rushing/running as a force to be reckoned with, as it will with players needing to be more rounded in skills.

I've had nothing but good experiences with USAA. It would be tough for me to walk away from them. When my brother died, they went above and beyond for our family.

Even Lakewood Community Church where Joel Osteen preaches has quite a traditional statement of belief. I would have to see what Osteen's sermons are like. I loathed "Your best life ever" because-for one thing there was no mention of taking up the cross or suffering for Christ, and his approach always seems like "Name It and Claim It" to me, and anyone who has read my posts for a while knows my less than shrinking violet opinion of that . ;^)

The attitude on the left is very frequently intolerant of differing beliefs to the point where they literally cannot comprehend that a "normal" person (like, someone they work with) might disagree with them.

We practice all year round here in SoCal, and have pitchers from the minor leagues (or rehabbing from MLB) show up at the field in the run up to opening day.
We invite them to hit with us (BP thrown by an MLB scout, no less), but they decline, saying they're pitchers. I think this is stupid, because ability to hit (or at least bunt) could easily affect your W-L record, and whether you stay in the game or not.
My take: too specialized.

And bunting seems to be a lost art. Hardly anybody wants to do that any more. It's not sexy enough, I guess.

The NFL can FOAD. They want fans back? First off the owners can fire Goodell and the tar and feather him and throw his burned and feathered corpse onto the field at the Hall of Fame in Ohio so we can all throw garbage on him. Then the owners can issue a written apology and allow me to whip them, naked, through the streets of Aberdeen. Then the players who kneeled at the beginning of this thing should be thrown out of their home stadium a la the Klingon devisiture ceremony with each person in the stadium turning thier backs silently. Afterwards. When seen people should be encouraged to pelt them with rocks and garbage. The rest should be fined $1M each and a new rule, in addition to the one that they ALREADY HAVE, entitled the "Shut the f*ck up and play football rule" should be adopted requiring stupid jocks and the public leeches owners to just shut the f*ck up should be adopted. Then and only then will I begin to forgive. I will never ever forget however. I will be watching very carefully.
Oh and for those who think this is extreme? It doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of what I WANT to do to them.
