Solutions Update

Problem 1 - Black To Play

20170923 - Problem 1.jpg
3r2k1/5pp1/5n2/2Q5/8/8/4P1P1/5K2 b - - 0 1

Black can fork White's king and queen:

1...Rd1+!
2.Kf2 Ne4+
3.Kf3 Nxc5 and wins

Problem 2 - White To Play

20170923 - Problem 2.jpg
rn3rk1/pp3ppb/2p4p/2Pn1P2/3NN3/4q2P/PP3RB1/R2Q2K1 w - - 0 1

1.Nc2!

Traps the queen

1...Qxf2+

Best to minimize loss. Play might continue:

2.Kxf2 Bxf5
3.Nd6 Be6
4.Bxd5 cxd5
5.Nxb7 Nc6
6.Nd4 and wins

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170923 - Problem 3.jpg
2r2b1r/pN1k2pn/2pP1p2/4Pqnp/2Q5/2P3P1/PP4BP/2KRR3 w - - 0 1

1.Qf7+ Nxf7
2.e6+ Qxe6

If instead Black tries to run for with 2...Ke8 then 3.d7+ Ke7 4.dxc8=N+ Ke8 5.Bxc6#

3.Nc5+ Kd8

Or 3...Ke8 4.d7+ Kd8 5.Nxe6+ Ke7 6.dxc8=N+ Ke8 7.Bxc6#

4.Nxe6+ Kd7
5.Nc5+ Kd8
6.Nb7+ Kd7
7.Bh3+ f5
8.Bxf5#

Problem 4 - White To Play (577)

20170923 - Problem 4.jpg
6k1/5pb1/1p1N3p/p5p1/5q2/Q6P/PPr5/3RR2K w - - 0 1

So, in order to stop Black from delivering mate on h2, White needs to strike early and often, beginning with

1.Re8+! Kh7

The other move, 1...Bf8? leads to mate in short order:

1...Bf8
2.Rxf8+ Kxf8
3.Nf5+ Kg8
4.Qf8+ Kxf8 (or 4.Rd8+ Kh7 5.Rh8+ Kxh8 6.Qf8+ Kh7 7.Qg7#)
5.Rd8#

So, with 1...Kh7, Black avoids mate, but loses material. For example:

2.Qd3+ f5
3.Qxc2 Qf3+
4.Kg1 Qg3+
5.Qg2 f4
6.Qxg3 fxg3
7.Re7 and wins

Endgame of the Week

20170923 - Endgame.jpg
8/8/b7/7p/P2P4/3k3B/8/K7 w - - 0 1

In this problem, the first move is obvious: save the pawn.

1.d5 Bb7
2.d6 Bc6

Black has now got his bishop where he wants, guarding d7 and a8. But...

3.Bd7!!

A killer move that will give White time to advance his pawn.

4...Bxd7

4.a5 h4

Futile for Black is 4...Bc6 5.a6 h4 6.a7 h3 7.d7 Bxd7 8.a8=Q

5.a6 h3
6.a7 Bc6
7.a8=Q!

Not good is 7.d7? h2 8.d8=Q+ Kc2 and White is in serious trouble, i.e. 9.Qb8 h1=Q+ 10.Ka2 Qd5+ 11.Ka1 Qd4+ 12.Ka2 Qa4#

7...Bxa8
8.d7 Ke3
9.d8=Q Bg2
10.Qf6 and wins

Black's king is cut off from his pawn and rook. White can now bring his king up and trap it on either the edge of the board or against his own pieces, 10...Ke4 11.Kb2 Kd5 12.Qf4 Kc5 13.Kc3 Kd5 14.Qf5+ Kd6 15.Kd4, etc.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

1 Got back from the local large liquor store a little while ago. It's their 8th anniversary. Nice sign out front read "Blues, Booze and BBQ".

And it was all FREE! They even give you a swag bag if you get there early enough, so I got one. But boy howdy was that store jammed.

OK I successfully deleted Office-365 (Office 2016) and it no longer opens under that if I click directly on the file. It now opens in Open Office. if I call up Excel 2000 first I can still open the Excel file instead of the Obt file that OO uses. But it is easier to make shortcuts that open the file directly with the assigned program.

I don't think it's Nazis. I think it's from the Chinese. High heels give the illusion that women's feet are smaller, which is an aesthetic from the Chinese.

Even in elementary school they taught us that Cinderella probably originated as a Chinese fable, because one of the proofs that the step-sisters were "evil" was that their feet were too big to fit into the lost glass slipper.

RE: 1908 women photos

I think those are some Edward VII girls. There was a group of them called "The Souls" who hung out with him. "All I know about The Souls is that they all have beautiful bodies," it was said.

1908 would be right down the middle of the plate for Edward VII, and I note the wasp waists, which is consistent.

What u said isn't entirely inconsistent-- Eddie's girlfriends came from all backgrounds.

By 1908, he was very fat & would die in 2 years, though. These ladies would be more his style circa 1900.

69 The problems are easy -- lt other people solve them!
But the endgame is tricky. I can only swing by for a minute, but it all comes down to half a tempo.

First of all, the d-pawn has to start running immedieatley, because 1. ... Kxd4 is an immediate draw.

So...1.d5

Now, the onyl way for black to stop the pawn is 1....B-b7.

But then if 2. d6, black goes 2. ... B-c6! And the black saves the draw by half a tempo after either 3. d7 or 3 a5 (no tiem to type out the moves.)

So the only trick I can see is 2. Bg2!!, hoping for a discovered/passed pawn sneak attack after d7. So black must go 3. ...Bc8, and only THEN go 4. a5! and both passed pawns will overburden the black bishop, and king can't catch them.

That's all I got.

70 Problem 1.
1...Rd1+ 2.Kf2 Ne4+

Problem 2.
1.Nc2 traps the queen

Problem 3.
1.e6+ Nxe6 2.Rxe6 Qxe6 3.Nc5+

Problem 4.
Hmm. White is a rook up but has big problems around h2. I guess the solution starts with 1.Re8+ Bf8 2.Rxf8+ Kxf8. Now maybe 3.Nf5+ Kg8. I don't know.

Endgames are my downfall. I'd play 1.d5 and hope for the best. I don't like 1.Bf1+ because it means giving up one of my pawns.

Why doesn't McCain switch parties? As a Democrat he could vote for repeal and it would be bipartisan.

74 OK, OK I have the solution to the Anthem problem for the NFL. Players do not have to stand for the anthem, but they are not allowed to take the field if they want to kneel instead of stand. They can kneel in the locker room. Only players who want to stand can take the field for the anthem. If you kneel on the field you get fined. If you do it twice it's an automatic suspension. 3 times and you can't play in the NFL ever again.

No, what I mean is, it's ok for a prince and heir to the throne to be catting around, chasing skirts. Kings, not so much.

So... if after he became king he wanted to find some strange, they were going to have to be very discreet.

And besides, he was 60 years old when he was coronated. He was fat and wheezy and old. Maybe he still liked new ladies in his life. He just wasn't prowling around looking for it.

But Indians (dot) DO believe in a lot of woo-woo.

The first time I ever heard of the term "woo-woo" was listening to an interfaith podcast including atheist Michael Shermer, and Deepak Chopra. Chopra was talking all this mystical nonsense about quantum entanglement which proves human interconnectedness, and Shermer said "That's woo-woo!" and Chopra said "No! Dat is not woo-woo!"

Rush made a great point about this last week. When he was working for the KC Royals, they were out in Scottsdale for a marketing gathering.

He said a sociologist from Harvard was there to speak to the group, and told them something he never forgot: Sports is the only avenue in which one can invest TOTAL PASSION without suffering any ill consequences (as opposed to, say a lover, whom might reject you).

Anyway, to your point, if fans now suffer ill consequences from their favorite teams as we're seeing currently -- they will no longer be your fans.

209 NFL numbers ARE shrinking recently, but there are several different explanation offered for that. Rush discussed that last week.

NFL itself points to fact that a fan can now watch his/her team's games on the 'Net 24/7. Rush pointed out that it used to be if you were a Steelers fan living anywhere but Pittsburgh, you only had one or two chances a season to see your team play & that was on broadcast TV.

I HOPE NFL is suffering because of all their liquid horsezhit, but it's not certain. NFL of course insists that fan unhappiness with kneeling isn't part of their problem at all.

Cervantes hates Quixote. As someone said (I don't know who, but AtC quotes it), "if you don't like your character how do you expect me to?"

308 What I have read of the writing process has not mentioned whether the author has to hate or love his characters (for my part, in a particular way, I love all my characters, whether sympathetic or not), but not to be overly cruel to them, which I have taken to heart.

I don't think Cervantes was excessively cruel to Don Quixote, just using him as an archetype he wanted to satirize.

Posted by: logprof at September 23, 2017 07:52 PM (GsAUU)

309 Gee, now that I see the solution, that endgame is nearly impossible to solve in one's head -- 10 moves deep (or "20 ply" in computer talk), which only some of the top grandmasters can manage.

Still scratching my head over whether my line also works. But now I see black has 1. d5 Bb7 2. Bg2!?! Kc4 3. d6 Bc8!! and now it's complicated again:

4. Bc6 Kc5 5. d7 Bxd7 6. Bxd7 Kb4!! and now it's a draw again because by one tempo black cuts off white king from the pawn, then pushes his on h=pawn to lure the bishop away, then Kxa4 draw.

Sneaky!!!

Worth a book thread discussion some time, I'm sure.

I didn't get what was being satirized. Quixote had pretensions at nobility but was not in fact noble. I just felt that Cervantes was rubbing the poor sap's nose in his own patheticness.

I probably read about 100 pages before I stopped waiting for it to be something else. I could try it again if it's a thing the book people want to talk about.
