This has already been mentioned in the comments, but I have to highlight it here: Trump is knocking it out of the park at the U.N. today. Here is the best line from his speech:

"Venezuela has failed not because socialism has been badly implemented but because it's been faithfully implemented"

This is a line that's going to be remembered for a long time. Which is why the alt left is beside itself with impotent rage.

From yesterday's Rant:

104 Funny to see Pittsburgh mentioned. My 17yo daughter is a HS senior this year, and was considering University of Pittsburgh for college. I've never been to Pittsburgh, and I know absolutely nothing about it. Does anyone have a real opinion about that campus? How worried should I be about my daughter going there?

31 Here's all that quote that doesn't sound too much like (paraphrasing) "the only problem with the UN is its bureaucracy needs fixing"...

The problem in Venezuela is not that socialism has been poorly
implemented, but that socialism has been faithfully implemented. From
the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or
communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and
failure.

Those who preach the tenets of these discredited
ideologies only contribute to the continued suffering of the people who
live under these cruel systems. America stands with every person living
under a brutal regime. Our respect for sovereignty is also a call for
action. All people deserve a government that cares for their safety,
their interests and their well-being, including their prosperity.

No, I'm sure if progressives really wanted to use Mother Theresa as their champion, they would explain how she was a true progressive and had actually denounced Christianity, but had to work under the guise of a Christian organization because of misogyny or some shit.

Luther split first, Calvin just a little bit after (as soon as he realized Luther was getting away with it) and they started to argue with each other almost immediately. Somehow Calvinism is the one that managed to grab the "Reformed" label and hold onto it, but it's all quite confusing.

It's amazing how many people believe this is dangerous. It's mixing two bases--you'll get some chloramine compounds that are mildly irritating, but that's it.

The PCUSA is the more liberals branch. The P Church in America is more conservative or maybe it's vice versa. The Conservative Episcopal have basically joined the African Anglican church. Methodists go from very liberal to quite conservative depending on the church and as they have a huge number of Methodists abroad their General conference still votes more conservatively.

Even the Presbyterians themselves admit they fit the description.

A visitor came to a presby church, sat in the back, started listening to the sermon. Pastor preached a good line, the man shouted out "AMEN!!!" Everyone fidgeted nervously.

Another good line came down, the man shouted "AMEN! AMEN!!!" Most of the congregation now glared at him.

He was inspired for a third time, and stood up while he shouted "PREACH ON, BROTHER!!!" That was too much, and an usher walked over to tell him to please keep his outbursts to himself. The man protested, "But I can't! I got religion, man, I got religion!"

219 I always thought the Protestant Reformation was the Protestant break away from the Catholic Church and a rejection of the rituals and the wealth the Church had accumulated.

Although the practices of the Reformed churches varied from Roman Catholic, that was not due to intent but consequence. The split was over basic theological issues of salvation, the Bible, sovereignty of God, etc. That resulted in simpler worship services without a lot of the trappings of the old church.

Yeah but Henry the 8th had nothing to do with the protestant reformation. He was just politically annoyed with the Pope's refusal to go along with his serial monogamy and England always has been pretty independent.

The Anglican Church was just the Roman Catholic church with a new name for a quite a few years. It was only later that reformed theologians and preachers managed to change the church and move it toward protestantism.

-OK to eff animals
-OK to behead non-believers
And you've pretty much got a religion designed by the Dark Lord.

267 No; A Marxist would say
With respect, effectively nobody is a doctrinaire Marxist in all respects, and Marxist (like socialist) tends to describe a mode of thinking found in collectivist beliefs more so than a complete system of thinking. The closest thing to a doctrinaire Marxist to be found today is usually *not* an industrialist, for example.

The key feature of the Marxist strain, phenotype, whatever you want to call it in thought is the concept of class struggle, oppressor vs. oppressed, evil rich vs. deserving poor, and the restructuring of all human conflict to reflect this divide and the power systems it involves, with collectivism advanced as the only solution.

Modern Liberal Christianity-in-name-only fits this to a T.

285 67 Mother Teresa is what liberals think of themselves. Ok. But Mother Teresa is the very essence of Christianity, so the Liberals see themselves as very devout, pious Christians?

Well, its more they see them selves as being super charitable, helping the poor and doing good in the world, the ultimate good works sort.

Yes, they see themselves as being super charitable, etc but they think all this charity and helping the poor should be done by taking from the "rich" and giving it to the "poor" or by the government doing all this by using my and your tax money. On a individual basis they are not much into their own personable charitable giving of THEIR time or money to help others.

Posted by: ares woman at September 19, 2017 12:21 PM (2gh0H)

286 the big thing I see in the chart is how "group think" shoves people into those categories.

Individuals have direct access to God through JC their brother/advocate/savior. The veil in the temple was rent/torn for top to bottom. JC our high priest forever. No more middle men, every person must study to show themselves approved unto God.

Their are ministries and all that, church structure a good concept and kinda works. But church dogma should never be above the individual's personal study/revelation/development. (imo)

Decades ago I used to go door to door ... the vast majority don't even know their own doctrine very well, far fewer spend much time studying to develop their own view. The horde is mostly an exception to that ... thinkers, willing to reject a Marxist pope agenda (though on doctrine I guess are somewhat more accepting of papal (what used to be) infallibility).

Anyway, I view it as parallel to the founder's concept of government ... the individual retains his own sovereign choice, determined directly between him and God. Various denominations claim to be the one true one, and the tribe/gang mentality has power/advantage. Self-reliance within that is challenging.

287 Thanks. I was under the impression that the formly stern Presbyterians had gone the way of the Episcopalians and Methodists.

Posted by: Donna and V (sans ampersands at the present time)

Methodists don't have a conservative alternative to UMC. But just about all the other mainlines have split into liberal and conservative sub-denominations:

Lutheran: ELCA (lib), LCMS or WELS (conservative)
Presbyterian: PCUSA (lib), PCA/OPC/EPC (conservative)
Anglican: Episcopalian (lib), ACNA (conservative)

The SBC (conservative) is the largest protestant denomination, but there are liberal versions of Baptists out there (ABCUSA).

Charismatics don't really have a conservative/liberal divide. Instead you have Assemblies of God, which is conservative, and then you have heretical movements (oneness Pentecostals) and charlatans (Benny Hinn).

356 Its interesting because the original term that the reformers used to describe themselves was "evangelical." Evangael is the root of that word, and it means "gospel," that's what the reformers were most concerned about and focused on, that's what they wanted to be known for. The doing and dying of Jesus Christ.

Calvin would have been very upset about having anyone call themselves "Calvinist." Luther would have thrown a beer mug at someone calling themselves "Lutheran."

yeah, the left never liked Bush Doctrine of spreading democracy. Trump made fairly clear a country is obligated to listen to its people. Venezuela is a case leaders overthrowing the people and installing cronies. Even Iran fits in that description, since the Green Revolution was forcibly put down. "Restoration is different than "imposing democracy".

But as that LI "case for colonialism" article pointed out ... one size does not fit all.

418 Believe it or not, you can still find conservative, Bible-believing churches in the PCUSA even now. They're like islands of sanity surrounded by rot

Compounding the trouble is the fact that the PCUSA, IIRC, effectively "nationalized" many or most churches to the central ownership of the church. So, you may have a little church somewhere that would like to stay more orthodox but are still pretty liberal, populated by some old folks who aren't all in on Oneness sermons and rainbow flags - and they can't go anywhere. If they in their local church rebel, they get turfed out of the building - with no option to buy or work out an arrangement because "fuck 'em".

Evil on stilts, and PCUSA recognized practice at this point.

Yes.
It also gets in trouble by focusing on morality vs. the supernatural presence of Christ and his offer of help, power & love in a diseased, corrupted culture & world. Once someone becomes a Christ follower, morality comes into pic, but leading with condemnation & moral scoldings is not exactly offering the love and blessings of Christ. JMO

They will also need O Chem for Biochemistry, which is a first year Med School course.

Why does the government punish the self employed?

My dad was self employed, as am I. We not only have to pay estimated taxes, but get absolutely effed by health insurance. It's worse now that it's ever been.

Why does the government want to discourage people from being their own bosses and taking control of their own life? Why don't they at least level the playing field? I'm not asking for anything special, just the same sort of deal that others get. Or at least something reasonably close.

I don't believe Trump presented himself as a "thinking" man nor did he represent rational efficiency the way, say, Romney did.
I'd say that the choice was between two feeling candidates, one genuine and one bogus. Emotion-based women rejected Hilary because they saw her (correctly) as a cold, robotic fake. She didn't really feeeel.

sometimes he'll, uh, well, you'll say hello to him, right? And he'll
just walk right by you, and he won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll
grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say "Do you know
that 'if' is the middle word in life? 'If you can keep your head when
all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust
yourself when all men doubt you'..." I mean, I'm no, I can't - I'm a

Atheist Churches is a bit like Ghey Marriage.

It kinda defeats the purpose of the whole thing-

the whole point of being gay is the (except for AIDS and STDs in general) consequence free sex with whomever strikes your fancy.

That's one, well maybe the main reason pretty much every all late period Elton John songs reference "freedom" and "talk one way or another about how family is a drag". Actually, he was doing that even as early as "Tumbleweed Connection".

Anyway I think I may have crossed streams here.

Indeed --- and that's why I think he could appeal to emotion-based LIVs too.
Hillary's feelings, to the extent that she ever revealed credible ones, were all about HER. She could not convince people she genuinely cared about anyone or anything else.

540 She needs to take a full year of Organic Chemistry in college, if she wants to go to Medical School. Whatever she majors in, she really needs to take that. If she doesn't, it's likely a deal breaker. Same thing for Veterinary school.
And she needs to get no lower grade than a "B" in O Chem to get in. This is a course that all Med Schools use as a metric to look at applicants.
They will also need O Chem for Biochemistry, which is a first year Med School course.

Yeah. Organic Chemistry is *the* weed-out course for pre-med students. It's annoyingly difficult in that it feels like mostly rote memorization of tons of reactions. Also it's mostly populated by people that want to go to medical school so the competition for the grades is pretty fierce (or it was back when I went to college...get off my lawn!).

As for the Pittsburg thing...students can request the sun, moon, and stars to all be made out of cotton candy, and a pop machine on every corner. The key is when given a list of stupid demands how the president responds to it. Are they a man or are they a mouse? Most have shrunk down to mice lately and are destroying their institutions.

557 Compounding the trouble is the fact that the PCUSA, IIRC, effectively "nationalized" many or most churches to the central ownership of the church. ...Evil on stilts, and PCUSA recognized practice at this point.
Posted by: Sporkatus at September 19, 2017 12:47 PM (HtLSE)

That was true in the 1970s when the a bunch of "rogue" churches split off from the PCUSA and formed the PCA. Congregants discovered the locks had been changed on their churches because the buildings were owned by the denomination, not the local congregation. It was a bitter pill to swallow. This was one of the first things PCA polity changed.

566 Wait, organic was hard? That was really easy for me. Inexplicably, freshman chemistry (the one for science majors) was much harder. Organic, biochem, and analytical chemistry were a breeze. Biochem is straight up molecular biology; I had a friend who was premed and we shared a lot of our chemistry classes. She took molecular biology at the same time as biochem, and laughed about how similar they were. It made studying for her tests easy.

Then it was badly taught. There are only seven types of reactions; teaching reaction chemistry from a mechanistic viewpoint makes it simple and straightforward. No memorization involved.

============

I tend to agree. It's sometimes intentionally taught badly, because the professors are assholes who resent teaching students who are there because its a big prereq for med school. My esperience was desperately trying to keep up with the prof, copying what he wrote on the board before he erased it and trying to understand my notes afterwards. Looking back, its an interesting subject, one I might have considered as a focus of study if that entire department were not almost completely composed of that type of professor.
