Boobgate is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in my life. Not just the faux outrage and shock, but the fact that they seem utterly unaware how they are coming across.
The left has transformed from fun-loving hippies into the women from The Music Man, horrified that Balzac is in the school library. They're the stern, bitter, prudish women that threw the prostitute out of town in the beginning of Stagecoach. Its so odd.
I mean, the angry anti-booze women of the late 1800s and early 1900s were "progressives" at the time as well, more of the "for your own good" philosophy, but I didn't expect them to show up again like this.
I can just imagine what young people are thinking watching CNN act as if the word "boobs" is a physical assault on women.

Then someone somewhere took exception to that and the classes were totally mixed together. The expression 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link' never seemed to occur to them.
Anyone who disagreed with this seating arrangement was branded a Nazi - but of course.

The song referenced is "Hallelujah" originally by Leonard Cohen. His version (the original) was not bad, and his lyrics were full of allusions to both Old and New Testament people and ideas, in a way that made old spiritual teachings about suffering and praise relevant to modern heartaches, like a deep love lost, and death.
But Cohen's song on its own would never have gone anywhere, because as it was, it was just another Leonard Cohen song. It was Jeff Buckley's spare interpretation of it, just him and his guitar. And his version, as much as anything I have ever heard, shows what a real artist can add to simple notes and words on a page.
I first heard it with a montage of photos of servicemen in the Iraq war, I think, and it thought it was good, but then didn't think about it. 3 weeks later I woke up in the middle of the night, with that song haunting my dreams. I didn't even know who it was by or anything about it, but I spent from 3 am til 4 am one night scouring the web for it and then listened to it 5 or 6 times in a row, til I memorized every nuance.
Listen to Jeff Buckley's version - you hear the pain of a life tried sincerely, the pain of a life gone wrong, and still praise and acceptance for what God has given and taken, with acknowledgment that the singer does not understand the reason for any of it, and never will. That's what facing death is like, when it comes time to face it.

I won't use the education establishment terms but in my day classes were grouped based on prior success. The highest achievers sat next to the other high achievers. The not-so-much sat next to other not-so-muchs.
Then someone somewhere took exception to that and the classes were totally mixed together. The expression 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link' never seemed to occur to them.
Anyone who disagreed with this seating arrangement was branded a Nazi - but of course.

Funny to see Pittsburgh mentioned. My 17yo daughter is a HS senior this year, and was considering University of Pittsburgh for college. I've never been to Pittsburgh, and I know absolutely nothing about it. Does anyone have a real opinion about that campus? How worried should I be about my daughter going there?

The nuns at my grade school went all Vatican II and Sr. May PantsSuits on us. They played "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and "Godspell" and had us make "Gods' Eyes" with yarn and popsicle sticks. I was never hit by one. OTOH, I didn't learn much about the actual Catholic religion from them either

2. Voted out after pulling a fire arm against opposing candidate while drunk. Later arrested for soliciting trans prostitute in park outside state capital
3. Arrested for abuse of office and misappropriating funds
4. Ousted for abuse of office for stalking County Clerks wife after having an affair with same CC's daughter
5. Retiring after 8 years under pressure because 9 different. inmates in the county jail for misdemeanor crimes have died under his watch.
I agree with the narrative, to an extent, that a lot of cops are corrupt and out of line.
To the extent that I need to vilify white people, burn down convenience stores and steal tennis shoes, I disagree with the narrative.

I'm old enough to have been in Catholic elementary school when the nuns still wore those habits (Sisters of Saint Joseph). In 5th grade (1968, I think) my teacher wore the modified habit: more of a dress with a waist belt and a headpiece that resembled an old time nurse's cap. She was new to the school that year, all the others kept their old-style ones.

The problem isn't the person double-dipping, its the rules that allow it. If it's legal, why not? And if the local government is stupid enough to lay out that kind of money...but then we all know it becomes a backdoor pathway to cronyism.

Pittsburgh is a great place to go to college. Pitt campus is in the Oakland neighborhood, not downtown. It can be a little sketchy in places, but not bad. Carnegie Mellon University is right next door, and if your daughter goes there I suggest living on the CMU side, because those neighborhoods are quieter (nerds party less). Shadyside or squirrel hill neighborhoods are great, you might have to take a short bus ride (I lived in Squirrel Hill 2 years).

We have my maternal great-grandfather's immigration papers. They say he was born in Prussia and the town name is German, but his name was clearly Polish. That makes things difficult when you're tracing your family, because the German place names were changed back to Polish ones.

I think people should give the first Star Trek movie another chance. yes, its long when it doesn't need to be, but the story and characterizations were very well done.
Old ladies are now almost exclusively leftists. They CARE, damn it! It's all about coddling victims, creating more government programs, and it makes them feel morally superior.
Its not about moral superiority, its about feelings and the way as you age, you stop being so certain about what you were sure about when you were young. And you see so much suffering and death as it piles up that you start to sympathise with the ideas of those who just want to end all that and live in peace. Sure, their ideas are stupid and unworkable. But the pain and the desire for it to be true can overwhelm the truth.

What really knocks Trek III down the ratings ladder is how Nimoy told Robin Curtis to play Saavik. Her version was colder more logical but that meant it lacked the drive to excel the Kirstie Alley version of the character had. Saavik became wallpaper.

As to Star Trek movies original cast? Wrath of Kahn is the best and a great movie in its own right. The rest? Meh, not so much (Although the Undiscovered Country has its moments - still a little too lefty for me. And Search for Spock where Kirk utters the immortal line "I Have had . . . enough! . . . OF . . . YOU! is pretty good). For next generation movies - they all pretty much suck, with the exception of Start Trek: First Contact. The Star Trek JJ Abrams movies are OK - the best of them being "Star Trek."
I would watch Wrath of Kahn - see what you think and then - if you like - the First contact, then watch the re-boot Abrams Star Trek.

Star Trek 4: Save the Whales is dumb, but its dumb fun. V is godawful. VI: Undiscovered Country is one of the best of the series, with Kirk fighting against his own nature to save the Klingons.
Then it went downhill pretty fast, although I did kinda like First Contact, the only watchable Next Generation movie.

The reason I recommend watching Star Trek I first is that it establishes HOW the old guys got back together and the dynamics of that. Its a good set up to the rest of the films.

OK - so you "went there" with Star Wars. As all REAL Star Wars fans know, there are NO Movies after Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, really. Return of the Jedi is watchable - but so disappointing because it could have been so much better ( Fuzzy Tedddy Bear Planet Endor was originally written as the Wookie home world. Close your eyes and imagine exactly how cool that would have been, then open them and watch the move and be disgusted with what was actually created).
Generally speaking, if you see "Jar-Jar- Binks" - it means the movie sucks moose b*lls.
The moment I realized how sucky the newer Star Wars movies were? When the Jedis in Episode One, who are dressed as Jedis, with Jedi haircuts and light sabers,( Jedi weapons) come to Young Annakin on his planet and he asks "Are you Jedi?" and the one Jedi (Qui-Gon played by Liam Neeson) answers: "What makes you think we're Jedi?" in a cheesy Liam Neeson A-Team voice

The Enterprise is tasked with retrieving the ship and capturing Khan. There's you movie. It has some elements from Wrath of Khan in a Starfleet ship vs Starfleet ship. Kirk vs Khan. And with the ending you can set up a direct sequel or a future one.
