Is This Something?

Below the fold for the "Is this something?" clip.

Meanwhile:

The teen who blew the whistle on Anthony Weiner's latest (we think...) sexting episode speaks to the press:

"I knew that Hillary Clinton would be running for president in the year 2016," she tells Inside Edition. "I wanted to see if Anthony was still up to the same antics."

She direct messaged him: "Hello, I'm a huge fan," and Weiner snapped to attention, responding within "minutes," she said.

Weiner soon moved past niceties, she said.

"He called me attractive," she told the magazine, and wrote her, "You are kinda gorgeous" and "Your body is pretty insane." Many of Weiner's messages were too lewd to repeat, she said.

The teen also says that one day, over Skype, Weiner asked her to undress. Inside Edition isn’t letting on yet whether the teen says if she complied.

She says she blew the whistle after Weiner texted her that creepy picture of him with his kid.

Hillary Clinton thinks that the message of Orwell's 1984 is Trust Your Benevolent Media-Government Overclass. Pretty close!

A couple of weeks ago progs were claiming it was insane to ask if antifa and Black Lives Matter would next come for the statues of Jefferson and Washington. This was obviously insane and deranged to ask, because Trump had asked it.

Well, guess what -- they came for the Thomas Jefferson statue at UVA. You know, the one that antifa claimed they were "protecting" from hypothetical harm from Nazi contamination.

Mostly lost in the general hysteria surrounding President Trump’s post-Charlottesville press conference a month ago was an excellent question he posed. Regarding the growing demand nationwide to tear down monuments to the Confederate States of America, he asked: "I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?"

His remarks were characterized by historians as "absurd" and "unacceptable" and "ignorant" and dismissed as a "red herring." At The Daily Beast, John Avlon called Trump's comparison "immoral" and "dangerous." At Slate, Jamelle Bouie claimed Trump's question was "dumb," arguing that statues of Washington and Jefferson were safe because "the reason we memorialize them is not because of their slaveholding."

Well. Earlier this week around 100 "students, faculty and community members" gathered at of the University of Virginia and "[covered] a statue of Thomas Jefferson in a black shroud…adorning it with signs that dubbed the former president a 'racist' and a 'rapist.'" The protesters derided the statue as "an emblem of white supremacy," and demanded that it be "re-contextualized," lambasting the people who "fetishize the legacy of Jefferson," calling on the community to 'recognize Jefferson as a rapist, racist, and slave owner."

As George Orwell often said, always put your faith in mobs and angry racist propagandists.

Now, for that "Is this something?"

And in that same category, Francis Scott Key monument in B'more defaced, and Fr. Serra statue at Santa Barbara mission defaced/vandalized. So yeah, "sympathizing" with idiotic, racist, race-baiting, out-of-the blue Taliban moves like removing statues - which some even here were, incredibly, doing as the confected Charlottesville hysteria proceeded - is a good way of getting more of those moves.

76 At Slate, Jamelle Bouie claimed Trump's question was "dumb," arguing that statues of Washington and Jefferson were safe because "the reason we memorialize them is not because of their slaveholding."

Ah. But the anti-statue people's argument was never "we will spare monuments that did not memorialize people because of slaveholding".

It was always "if this person (or horse mascot) had any association whatsoever with slavery, then the monument must be torn down".

That's why (in England) they wanted to tear down Nelson's column. He was memorialized for Waterloo, but they tried to argue for some obscure connection with slavery.

Jeremiah Wright has been attacking Jefferson for a long time. These people are his spiritual descendents. Of course they were going to get around to it eventually. Slippery slope, camel's nose, etc.

He meant it in that sense: England is certain every man will do his duty.

Yes. It had to do with the English longbowmen in the Middle Ages. When they were captured by the French, their fingers were cut off so they could no longer draw a bow.

The remaining longbowmen started showing their index and middle fingers with the back of their hand facing the enemy, indicating that they could still use their bows. That was the V sign that Churchill made.

It's not the same as the "peace" sign with the palm facing outwards.

But the British had a new weaon - the long bow and pretty much wiped out the French. As the British archer were marching past the French knights they all held up their hands, palm out, with only the index and middle finger (the ones used to pull a bow string) showing. Very much a defiant f*ck you gesture. The Brits still us it in that context.

184 86: Yes. At Angincourt, the French promised to cut off the first two fingers of the British archers when the defeated them.

201 I liked the Churchill clip. I had been prepared to hate it-- rather like Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee. I changed my mind when I saw the actor's work.

The way Oldman declaims the famous speech isn't the way I remember hearing the original-- Oldman's C'hill seems a little too shout-y to me. O certainly looks the part & has the mannerisms down, however.

I also think the trailer hyped Churchill's political isolation & supposed unpopularity too much. Nuance isn't easily conveyed in this type of film. "Lincoln" with Daniel Day Lewis suffered from that same "nuance shortage," imo.

Times on Churchill's maiden speech as PM: "A rather good first outing." (referencing some of the most immortal prose in the English language, i.e., the BS&T speech)

Useful idiot or intentionally obtuse. Leea and Jackson aren't memorialized for owning slaves either. They are honored for their leadership and courage. yet they must be removed for their association with slavery. The same argument will and already is being made of Washington and Jefferson. Not that anybody of any intelligence is fooled by their BS. We know what the left wants and it isn't justice.

217 My BIL died at 1 pm today. It was peaceful - he just stopped breathing - there was no death rattle or gurgling or anything like that (which I have witnessed with other deaths).

So I was a complete and total mess at work and my boss let me leave. For some reason, I went to the cemetery my parents are buried in and said prayers by their graves, although they never knew him. I wanted to tell Mom and Dad that he, unlike husband #1, had treated their daughter - actually, both daughters, really well.

Then I went to the park. It was an absolutely beautiful day here in SE Wisconsin and so I wanted to be outside, but I didn't want to blubber in public in front of the world. Parks - especially when school is in session - are good places to go when you are heartbroken but don't want to cry on your bed. So I cried all afternoon on a bench overlooking Lake Michigan.

Then I came home and watched baseball. The Crew won tonight. That would have made my BIL very happy.

I already miss him so much. There is a hole in my heart.

221 Two thoughts: First, the takeaway the press will give us from the Churchill movie is that Churchill was a hero and the first Antifa and that's why we need to resist Trump.
Second thought is on UVA. There is a weekly section in the Wall Street Journal that features classified ads for high end properties. One that caught my eye was a 25 acre estate in the Appalachian foothills of Virginia, bordering a stream, mostly wooded, about 3 acres of lawn, a 5000 sq. foot 5 bedroom house on it - for $695,000! This was part of an area of similar sized lots and houses. Why so cheap? It did have indoor plumbing and electricity. Oh, it was only about 10 miles from UVA. That explains it!
