UN Security Council Unanimously Passes New Sanctions Against North Korea; But New Sanctions Are Weaker Than Demanded, to Appease China and Russia

I'm not sure it matters much how tough the sanctions are, until they're sanctions against North Korea's patron China.

The United Nations Security Council on Monday ratcheted up sanctions yet again against North Korea, but they fell significantly short of the far-reaching penalties that the Trump administration had demanded just days ago.

...

The American ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki R. Haley, reacted to the bomb test last week by calling for the fullest range of international sanctions, including a cutoff of all oil supplies, in a new Security Council resolution.

Those demands were toned down in negotiations that followed with her Russian and Chinese counterparts. Late Sunday night, after a series of closed-door meetings, a revised draft emerged, setting a cap on oil exports to North Korea, but not blocking them altogether.

It's something, but not much. Seems like China and Russia are just stalling us from confronting the problem by agreeing to weak concessions.

7 My Solution to the NORK Problem:

Send a little letter to China. Say, "Go ahead. Take it. We promise not to interfere at all. Just make sure you only take the North and not the South along with it."

Problem solved.

And a nice little bonus thumb in the eye to the South in return for their general shittiness of late. Meet your new neighbors. Have fun with that.

It's funny, sanctions are about the only alternative to actual warfare. So the Left even gets outraged when diplomatic solutions are used instead of war.

59 Relying on the "International Community" to deal with rogue states is a waste of time. Look at Iran. More specifically, look at our EU allies lining up to do business with Iran.

So what do we do about North Korea? It's clear the Chinese and the Russians will nullify any non-military means we might employ to deal with them. If we strike preemptively to take out their artillery and as much of their nuclear capability as we can, then the Chinese have said said they will intervene on North Korea's behalf.

How about we shut down the single state-operated North Korean propaganda channel take over the airwaves and broadcast Korean language dubbed American television programs night and day, every day? Show these miserable, hopeless people a free world. Better yet, show them the Food Channel, which would probably play like pornography in a starving country like North Korea. Prime them for internal revolt. If memory serves, American television--especially shows like Dallas and Dynasty--had an enormous impact on East Germans back in the day.

It's a thought.

76 I don't see what Russia gets from all this. I see China using the crazies as a buffer from western incursion. But Russia? There can't be that much trade with NK. They just want to stick it to us? Stir the pot to keep us busy while they can pursue other things like Ukraine, reabsorbing eastern block, their mideast shenanigans?

I have the feeling this was their plan if the drunk witch won. Probably a good gambit in that case but they didn't have a plan "B" so they're just pushing ahead thinking it's good enough.

That's going to be a dangerous miscalculation for everyone. We're not supposed to react logically to a threat. Just flail about sending sternly written twitter volleys and then give everything away in a "peace" treaty. That would of been the drunk's response. The world expects America to be their bitch. 104 Show these miserable, hopeless people a free world. Better yet, show

them the Food Channel, which would probably play like pornography in a

starving country like North Korea.

They say MTV had a lot to do with the Berlin Wall coming down once the Eastern European kids were exposed to it.

108 China should not be resisting tough sanctions. If that fat-arsed child that runs North Korea is given any kind of encouragement that China has his back he's gonna keep lobbing missiles until he starts a war. And they can't possibly want that.

111 76 I don't see what Russia gets from all this. I see China using the crazies as a buffer from western incursion. But Russia? There can't be that much trade with NK.

You are aware that Russia shares a border with NK, right? Just a few months ago there was talk about Russia working with NK to upgrade rail facilities at the border. I seem to recall the work being called off, but I've been wrong before.

118 In addition to giving away much of our hard-won progress in Iraq, our previous Islammunist TOTUS also gave the keys to the nuclear kingdom to his Ayatollah.

And now we see the fruits of that treason in North Korea, where they are suddenly making huge nuclear strides with Iran's help. Traitor.

To paraphrase the Sultan, Everything I Know About Treason, I Learned From Barack Hussein Obama.

119 77 Eh. UN is irrelevant. We will wait with our anti-ICBM tech. We did some successful tests recently, IIRC.

If he lobs a bomb directly into Japan or South Korea, then we will have an excuse to annihilate him.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear

There are a couple of problems with that plan. First off, our interceptors aren't all that reliable, and we don't have many of them.

More worryingly, there is a worst case scenario out there that the Norks may have as many as 50 or 60 nukes right now, and an equal number of ICBMs. There is some evidence that they do have that amount of fissionables right now. And their rocket production as an unknown. In such a case, and with at least a few of them set to provide an EMP attack, there's no way to shoot them all down. We don't have that many defensive rockets.

Sure, we can annihilate them afterwards, but that is a small cold comfort. We're living in a very dangerous time.

How about offering a $100 million bounty on Phat Boi's head? If Saddam's head was worth $50 mil, and he wasn't a very real threat to us, this seems like a bargain as compared to war.

125 Only two things will fix this. Either we convince the Russians and Chinese they have more to lose by a new Korean war, or demonstrate they have more to lose in a new Korean war.

There really isn't a lot of talking left to do. Either we take care of business with Whoa Fat! or we roll over again.

Nobody takes "sanctions" seriously at this point.
