The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Today is the anniversary of an event that changed America forever, one that we'll be talking about for a long time: One year ago today, Hillary Clinton was unceremoniously tossed into the back of an SUV like a sack of fertilizer, and that pretty much ended her presidential campaign right there. And she lost a shoe."

This. Is CNN:

cnn melanias shoes.jpg

Well, this is pleasant: CNN throws in the towel on fake Russian news

CNN has dismantled its vaunted Trump-colluded-with-the-Russians investigative unit in a wretched concession to reality. The only thing the unit found was an empty well for stories, surrounded by a crust of fake news. The whole caper damaged the network's credibility, and the public just wasn't buying it anymore. So the whole unit had to go.

I am reminded of Geraldo Rivera's big "opening Al Capone's vault" debacle where he goosed expectations up sky high and then ended up eating a big bag of di-nothing.

He also collects themed photography series including portraits of Chet

biggest collection of 9/11 photographs in the world, some 2,000 in all,
ranging from images made by amateur snappers on the ground to work by

Magnum photojournalists.

"I have The Falling Man, [by Richard Drew]," he says, quietly. "It is one of the most
beautiful and powerful and upsetting images ever. One side of the
building in darkness, one side in light and this man falling in that
perfect straight line, head first, out of the tower. It is the most
beautiful photograph of the most painful, horrible thing. This is the

Fire ants are attracted to electrical equipment. Hell, I've had to clean them out many times. The worse is when the well pump stops, and it's fire ants have swarmed the pressure switch and blocked the contacts.

The question is if they are actually attracted to electric fields or is it something secondary. I've read evidence for the former, and then stuff that no, it's the following:

The ants go everywhere during normal foraging. One ant gets shocked and dies, and when they do, they release an attraction chemical that attracts other ants. This is how ants mark food supplies. One ant finds the mother lode and signals his buddies. You then get a massive ant trail, as you've probably seen.

Moving power lines underground in urban areas is cost prohibitive. It simply will not be done. And the last numbers I saw for rural areas was $1M per mile. You can do it in new neighborhoods just being built a lot cheaper and power companies are doing that, but the feeder lines going to the neighborhood are above ground.

And besides all that, unless you made the distribution transformers in the neighborhood waterproof it would not do any good anyway.

At distribution voltages, it can be done, but it's still pretty expensive.

At transmission voltages, really high 100KV - 1MV range, it's cost prohibitive.

Air makes a pretty good insulator. We're all used to low voltages. At high voltages, things get crazy. Terminations and splices are a whole different ballgame. You know the "sharp point" effect. E field gets high at sharp corners and will break down insulation there easily first.

Even in air, above 1MV, you'll get lightning-like breakdown. Local E field gets high enough, ionized air and a little stepped leader can form, worming its way to ground.

It gets very expensive to put HV under ground.

Yes it does. There was 9/11/1683, the relief of the Siege of Vienna. There was also 9/11/1565, when the Ottomans were driven back from the Siege of Malta. Other significant 9/11s in the long war between islam and The West are 9/11/1877, when the Russians lost the Battle of Plevna, but went on to win that Russo-Turkish war & drive the Ottomans out of all of Europe except for Thrace. Just a few days shy was the great fire of Smyrna in 1922 when the Turks set fire to Smyrna, Greece & killed tens of thousands of Christians.

113 FWIW, every 9-11, I view a few of the tribute videos by myself. I can't really watch with others.

Two of my favorites are the Budweiser Clydesdales, and another one called "I Believe".

The following does emphatically NOT refer to any morons or 'ettes, but is more directed as a general comment toward the broader US citizenry.

For me, the attack on the Cole was enough of a wake up call. I had hopes that 9-11 would wake all but the most dedicated anti-Americans.

Sadly, many seem to have forgotten, and too many are too busy indulging microaggressions to probably even think of 9-11, let alone shed a tear or even have a quiet, respectful moment.

The knowledge of that pathetic legacy, in a way, is almost as sad as what happened that day.

131 There's a new movie called 9/11 with Charlie Sheen about people trapped in an elevator in one of the Towers.

I don't know any of the plot details but it appears loosely based on Dean Eberling and others. Dean was a mild-mannered securities analyst who, along with another guy, managed to pry open the elevator doors enough so that the two women escaped.

"Even amid the chaos, Mr. Eberling managed a laugh. "When Ms. Smith first threw her bag out of the elevator before sliding out, ''He yelled at me: 'Do you really need that?' '' she recalls."

Dean and the other guy didn't make it.

And it would seem that the High Lord of Snark, Iowahawk may have actually provided the answer.

1. Identify a respected institution

2. Kill it

3. Gut it

4. Wear its carcass as a skin suit, while demanding respect.

We've all read the quote before.
But take a moment to think of the truth behind those words.

We need a Dreamer 3/5ths Compromise, wherein we establish that each Dreamer is 3/5 naturalized, but the 2/5ths that is not must be returned to its home nation.

Two arms counts as 2/5ths, and will probably be the most popular configuration. A head and a leg--less likely to get much traction--also counts as 2/5ths.

Posted by: LizLem at September 11, 2017 12:32 PM (hvf9s)

228 Instapundit had an observation about 9/11 that I totally agree with, which is-

immediately after 9/11 the one thing I never thought would happen is that America would elect a feckless leftist as president, who would proceed to flush away America's position in the world and security over eight years,

as America stood around and let him.

I've often thought the same or similar things.

Why was America in such a hurry to elect a guy with the name, Barack Hussein Obama, cuz that's really all they knew about him.

We, as a nation, literally elected a guy with no accomplishments in gov't, business, the military, anywhere at anything.

The Left had suffered lots of setback in the proceeding years.

The collapse of the Soviet Union proved that socialism/communism was a failed system.

The Clinton sex scandals proved that feminism was a cynical scam to gull the weak-minded.

Then, 9/11 happened.

I think at that point the Left broke. Pretty much every single thing they believed was proven with blood and fire to be completely false,

and they couldn't take it.

They could no longer handle reality. Everything they had been told made them "good people" becuz they believed it, was a lie.

At that point, you can do one of two things:

1) Reassess your beliefs and change them

or

2) Double down on the fantasy

Obviously, as a group, they chose #2.

Or rather, I think, the smart people who finance and reap money from the left, realized that this was a good way to maintain control and money flow.

America was the problem. Not islam. And look! See we elected a guy with a muslim name to "fundamentally change America".

And with each step, they took America farther into fantasyland, where anything was true but reality.

Hey that socialism stuff works!!! And if you don't agree, we'll beat you up.

Men can become women and women can become men and both can become pretty pretty ponies!!!

The solar cycles have nothing to do with weather on Earth. It's all stuff man does like barbecuing steaks! Yeah, mostly bbq and driving cars. Oh, and air conditioning. And industry. But, not the sun.

And even after 8 years of "there there here's you binky" politics for the left, they as people are still broken.

And that's why we have the NeverTrump insanity -

they were all set to make Their Fantasy the law of the land with the full majesty of the US law-enforcement behind it.

But then.....Trump.

But everything- Antifa, everything I now believe flows from 9/11-

the day reality broke the Leftists' minds.

I know TL?DR, but I've been thinking a lot about this lately cuz-

I don't know how we find our way back cuz it seems we are dealing with a mass hysteria and functional insanity in large groups of people.

And we absolutely cannot give the Left the Power Binky, which they so crave. To do so would destroy our future and the future of our children and grandchildren.

It is a quandary.

The absurdity of an Obama didn't just happen, he was swept into office - and he got re-elected. There is an obsession with Soros and other boogie men, but not a single pernicious thing that's happened since 9/11 was possible without the support, or indulgence, of the American people.

Even the judiciary spinning out into ludicrous and undisguised lawlessness - i.e., institutional collapse - is ultimately the fault of the people, if they don't act to fix it. Which they're not doing.

Soros and "the left" and all this is distraction or nonsense. It's the people around you/us that allow this all to happen. At least a working plurality, nationally.

I don't like Hoe because its the same thing as a garden implement. Ho is good for shorte for "whore" because its a few letters off. Hoe makes no sense, its not spelled "whoere."

Yes, the plural should be Hoes, because that's basic English, but Ho is the singular. Plus, it would save juvenile and idiotic snickering every time someone sees a garden implement store or ad. Hee hee hee they sell hoes!

I think at some point, some way we have to disconnect these lunatics from the idea that they just have a "different political ideology".

They are mentally and emotionally unstable children who have never been told "No" . They see the universe only in terms of their own tiny life-spans. They don't recognize the existence of facts or reality that contradicts their worldview.
And their only coping mechanism is hysteria, spittle-flecked rage and mob violence. All justified in their tiny heads by their current "feelings".

Parents used to discipline their kids to prevent this very thing.

The night of the 1977 Blackout, my dad, my sister and I were at the bandshell at Lincoln Center for a concert. The entire audience really didn't know that there was a blackout at first as the orchestra kept playing when the lights went out. Everybody thought it was part of the show. When we figured out that the entire city was dark and we'd have to get home, we walked to my dad's van in the dark and random passersby actually lit the way with flashlights for us here and there. Somebody even threw light on the van door so my dad could get us in. This happened close to those projects behind Lincoln Center. Today you could not pay me to park in that neighborhood.

all these talk guys ... or several at least, often have strong points to make ... but a summary could do it in two minutes. They spend a lot of time claiming they were first, they are most vital, they said such and such long ago ... that gets tiring.

I had that happen when I lived in Orlando, but just with a normal unit on the ground. They ended up hotwiring it in some way that worked to cool the house but wasn't as efficient until they could schedule a complete replacement.

And interestingly when the concern was cooling, the answer, giving more power and money to the people preaching doomsday was the same.

None of which was likely, much less inevitable, if properly handled. Which it was, with major avoidable mistakes, up til the whole thing was abandoned by you know who (to the silence and indifference of the public, too busy with their NFL fantasy leagues and crappy movies, or something, to care).

Which has just been confirmed, spectacularly, with how easily the situation was turned around WRT ISIS (with de minimis resources from us). The power vacuum was the US policy starting in 2009, magnified by the insane Iran policy.

Top-ranking Saudi officials weren't making secret trips to *Israel* before Obama's insane Iran policy. There's a clue there as to what, and when, the serious problems were.

But to tie the themes here together in the most invidious yet sadly correct way, BDS over Iraq was exactly the same phenomenon as Obama being a candidate for prez, it just infected more people, including many who were appalled by Obama's candidacy.

363 Do you support the war on cigarettes? Similar evidence to Human Caused Climate Change theory. How about the first ban on freon? Funny how they found a good freon that supposedly differs from that bad freon.

Gotta disagree on both counts. Cigarette smoking is most definitely linked with lung cancer, starting with the epidemiological work of Doll et al. in the 1950s. Totally different from the AGW crap, which is based on models, not hard data.

Re freons, the original ones were chlorofluorocarbons. In the upper atmosphere they decomposed to release chlorine atoms, which catalyze the disproportionation of two molecules of ozone to three molecules of oxygen through the intermediacy of chlorine monoxide:

O3 + Cl. --> O2 + ClO
ClO + O3 --> 2 O2 + Cl.

Later generations of freons contain only fluorine, and not chlorine, and consequently are not a problem.

This is where I'm at, too.

I have no doubt that mankind has an impact on the natural balance of things; climate, ecology, etc. Organisms of all types have SOME influence on the world around them, so there's no doubt that we do, too. Climate change itself is a natural thing that has happened before and will happen again. Just ask the dinosaurs. Just ask the mastodons.

My problem w/ the AGW crowd is one of scale. My questions are always, "To what extent is mankind affecting the planet? Is it all negative? What can be done to ameliorate those negative effects? How can you prove to me that your solutions are workable and will result in the desired outcome?"
I think those are pretty basic, non-argumentative questions.

But the AGW crowd always comes back with, "HUMANITY IS KILLING MOTHER GAIA GIVE US ALL YOUR MONEY AND LIVE IN A MUD HUT AND SHIT IN COMMUNAL TOILET PITS OR WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE *jets off in private plane*"
Sorry, I don't take those hysterics seriously.

393 Westworld was some sort of failure, not hackers.

In the original I believe this is true. In the remake there were several competing forces changing code. The dead genius founding partner who introduced code designed to promote a general AI, this code was self changing. The living genius founding partner who wanted full control of the park in which to do as he pleased. He was obfuscating code and deleting records to hide his actions. The board of directors who were trying to wrest control of the park from the living founder were ham fistedly changing replicants to use as mules to export proprietary data from the park.

I suppose one could call the living founder and the board of directors changes "hacking".

How is it "leadership"? What you really are admitting is that you are capable of personally telling the difference between good theology and bad theology. And if you can do that, you have no need of suffering under a misguided, corrupt Magisterium.

That's a healthy attitude to evince, generally speaking (i.e., to question whether one might be wrong).

I have a more fundamental objection to AGW: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and the AGW proponents won't even release their raw data, much less the data reduction algorithms, or the details of their "models."

Without that information to hand, I refuse even to consider their proposition. If I were reviewing their papers, I'd reject them out of hand for that. They're basically saying they've read the sheep's entrails, and we're doomed, without giving us the wherewithal to check their reasoning.

Hell, if you publish a X-ray crystal structure - about as hard a piece of data as you'll find - you have to deposit with the journal all the X-ray reflection data (usually 3000-5000 reflections), etc. as supplementary material, and cite the data reduction algorithms and crystallographic programs you used (these are typically standard, and so merely citing them suffices).

Even better than that, it appears the board of the Katy ISD signed on to the use of "capital appreciation bonds" to pay for this thing.

Wall Street has been routinely rooking financially unsophisticated municipal and county executives all over the country with these instruments.

Suffice it to say that if $70M is the nameplate price tag, capital appreciation bonds will turn the total long run cost into something closer to $200M.

Which is a huge fail on the part of the show creators, because the Klingons were ALWAYS more badass and impressive than the wishy-washy Federation, whose only saving graces were a rogueish Captain who liked to bed green alien women, and a perplexed half-Vulcan who acted as his foil.

I mentioned on Twitter the other day that I got into an almost-actual fight with Mr. MWR last week because he thinks Picard is a better captain that Kirk. He is wrong.

For me, it's a simple case of the scientific method. Over the past 40+ years, the same people have made predictions... none of which have come true. First global cooling, then global warming, then climate change. There was talk of oceans evaporating, oceans warming, food shortages, millions of people dying, catastrophic hurricanes (remember them freaking out after Katrina and warning people the next few years would be worse and worse and stronger and more and more of them... didn't happen). Nothing has ever come to pass.

And, the entirety of their argument is that CO2 is some poison and that humans are emitting it at dangerous levels due to coal and oil and emissions, etc. that causes the planet to heat up. Yet, the planet has not heated up in over a decade.

So there is absolutely no scientific evidence behind any of their claims in the past 4 decades!

So, yeah, I laugh at anyone who pushes that nonsense.

Hurricane Wilma in 2005 has the lowest measured pressure for a hurricane - 882mb.

459 I was at the new KISD stadium Friday evening for the Katy vs Manvel scrimmage. Over time Stadiums pay for themselves with the revenue they produce - they are a money producing asset for the school district - so I'm not very upset with that kind of spending.

There are eight schools in KISD and two stadiums - Rhodes is the older stadium and has a capacity of 10,000 - when Katy played there the stadium was often a sellout. When the 8 schools played each other with only one Stadium there was a game on Thursday, one on Friday, and two on Saturday. The new stadiums allow the district to get rid of the Saturday games.

Because of Texas law those funds couldn't have been spent on books etc - the stadium funds come out of the capital expenditures budget.

allegory. Progressives are, of course, the enlightened Federation, which

461 Jay gives a good example of how "AGW" is, simply, unscientific.

Science is falsifiable hypotheses being confirmed through repeatable empirical testing or its equivalent, withstanding all the "skepticism" that can be brought to bear.

Is any aspect of AGW falsifiable in any practical sense? I mean apart from the "models", which are falsified every time?

I think the kooky, actually scientifically literate folks at WUWT or some other website have offered a cash reward to anyone who can present "evidence" that all observed climate change is NOT consistent with natural phenomena, with natural variation (whose causation is of course not fully or in some cases not at all understood).

Sort of a nice concise statement of the issue.

477 Three questions re. AGW ....

1) What is 'normal' global climate? (Note: 'Global' includes North and South as well as East and West hemispheres.)

2) Is the current 'change' moving towards or away from 'normal'?

3) Isn't it equally likely that interfering with the 'change' will harm our move to 'normal' as it is to help?

479 Also, RE: global warming cultists...

I watch a lot of shows on the Science Channel. "Unearthed", "Mysteries of the Missing", "Mysteries of the Abandoned", "Impossible Engineering".

Just watched a show recently where they were trying to figure out "rogue waves". They admitted that they originally thought they were impossible, just a myth. Then they had proof when one was caught on video. So they did more research. Took satellite images to track rogue waves in the oceans of the planet. They were absolutely shocked with what they found. They thought rogue waves were formed once every 10,000 years. Truly a freak phenomenon. What they discovered was that they happened all the time, all over the planet.

Anyway, by the end of the show, they just flat out admit that they have no idea what causes rogue waves, have no idea how to predict them and need much more research. This kind of thing (thinking they know everything about something, yet finding out they were 100% wrong after getting scientific data) happens all the time.

Which is why the cultists are so keen on shutting down debate about this and not letting anyone investigate anymore. Nevermind that they haven't even proven their basic premise yet!

But the fact is that science is never "settled". And anyone pushing that message is not a scientist, but a propagandist and/or politician.

Heck, even Shark Week shows have shown that after research, they discover things they never thought possible or never knew existed. They flat out say that there is SO much about the oceans that they still do not understand. Well gee, if you don't understand the oceans, you can't possibly fully understand the climate of the entire earth.

But that is exactly what the cultists claim. And millions believe them. Aggravating.
