Memphis Theater Cancels "Gone With the Wind" Showing As Being Too #Triggering

They used the word "insensitive."

ne of Hollywood’s iconic films is under some serious scrutiny in Memphis, Tennessee. The city’s historic Orpheum Theatre is pulling showings of Gone with the Wind after the 1939 classic was deemed as “insensitive.”

Victor Fleming’s film was part of their summer series programming. After the first screening on August 11, the Orpheum received numerous comments about the film which prompted them to drop it from their 2018 series.

Of course.

I wonder if they know that when they say "Punch a Nazi" they're inviting people to punch them.

See the Carol Burnett parody of Gone With The Wind. It's on Youtube, I think. Anyway, she wears the famous green dress made out of the drapes with the curtain rod still in it.

71 Men slapping and roughing up women happens fairly often in older films. I was watching a movie on TCM the other day from the 1950's. Man and a woman started arguing. I thought to myself "she's gonna get slapped." I've seen enough of these old film noirs to know what's coming next. Sure enough, a few seconds later "whack!" Are all of these going to be the next problematic films to be purged?

73 We went to see this at the Orpheum two years ago for my mother's 60th birthday. It was an incredible experience, if you haven't been. Old-timey calliope (I think?) played before the film, there was an intermission...all that, plus the layout of the theater, is just something you don't get anymore at the movies.

I saw this a couple days ago and told my mom about it. We discussed it and finally she said, "Well, it never occurred to me that the movie was offensive, but I guess for people who aren't coming from the same background as me...." I cut that straight off and told her I didn't care about those people. Because I don't.

This is a classic example of why the culture wars have to be fought. The Left is out to make individuals police their own thought and internalize the idea that they are unknowingly oppressing the minority-of-the-week. We simply cannot give an inch on things like this, cannot even concede that the Enemy might have a point. It must be "no quarter" from here on out.

103 You all relize we are run as a country by a small percentage of Leftists, and everyone runs around worrying what they might do to set them off.

This is how and why the Klan started. No, seriously.

After the (Southern) slaves were emancipated, the meme around the North and among pro-Unionist southerners was, we got to uplift the blacks in the South RIGHT NOW or else they'll go Saint-Domingue. ("Hayti", as it was spelled then.)

The recently-decommissioned whites in the CSA army took the tack, if they's can misbehave, we aim to misbehave worse.

Eventually the North blinked first and let Jim Crow happen. Because the Southern whites misbehaved worse.

The South didn't go Hayti, but it did end up in a generations-long pattern of stagnation and brutality. I'm not here to judge which would have been worse or what could have been done better, since I'm not American.

108 I've never been a big GWTW fan, unlike many of the friends. I first saw it when I was 12 or 13, and saw it a few more times in my teen years, but then hadn't seen it for many, many years. I was always embarrassed by the Butterfly McQueen character - she was just so irritating and stupid. As an adult I always felt uncomfortable about the black characters, so I didn't watch the movie for years.

Then, 10 or 15 years ago my niece got the Blu-ray edition for Christmas. A few days later she asked if I wanted to watch it with her, so I did. I was frankly surprised that the movie wasn't as bad as I'd remembered in its depiction of the black characters. Yes, it's definitely a movie of its time, but it's still a great movie. I might need to watch it again soon.

(And the funniest thing about watching it with my niece - after two hours the first disc ended and the "Intermission" sign came on the screen. My niece shouted, "Intermission?!? You mean it's not over yet?" She had no idea it was a four hour movie.)

Men slapping and roughing up women happens fairly often in older films. I
was watching a movie on TCM the other day from the 1950's. Man and a
woman started arguing. I thought to myself "she's gonna get slapped."
I've seen enough of these old film noirs to know what's coming next.
Sure enough, a few seconds later "whack!"

Are all of these going to be
the next problematic films to be purged?

One of my first comments about it had my sister laughing. I said the Union couldn't get down there fast enough and kill these effete twats. It was during that 'party' at the beginning of the movie. Scarlett O'Hara needed to be shot. She was awful. The perfect ending would have been, after that little speech and with that iconic shot of her at the end of the movie, you'd hear a gun shot and she would drop. A Union sniper got her. The guy who played her cuck husband died in WWII. He was a British commando. I thought that was interesting.

161 They are working hard to destroy "our history". But it is OK because "our history" has white folk, so EVERYTHING in our history is boiled down to "white supremacy".

Even my lawyer "Republican" FB friend (and real friend from a couple decades back) agrees Robert E Lee history is only White Supremacy", even though he was against slavery.

So actual Africans that sold the slaves to a few of 'us" are wonderful and they are to be admired as the brothers of American African Americans. But Bob Lee that opposed slavery and preferred a transition that would have been better not just for whites, but probably for blacks that suffered terrible AFTER the war. So he is evil, yet Lincoln that said he didn't care about what happened to blacks, he is pure?

I learned about Farrell's politics later, but even now, looking back, it doesn't seem all that blatant to me. I mean, you can definitely see some of it in his character, but I don't remember B.J. saying anything more preachy and antiwar than Hawkeye, Klinger, or even Col. Potter said from time to time. It's been a while since I've seen an episode, though, so possibly a fresh viewing would make me feel differently.

There have been several iterations of the Klan. Three, I think, but I can't remember the details of the delineations between them.

The early iteration was basically a paramilitary wing of the Democratic Party in the South. Just like the IRA terrorist wing vs the official party, and other similar instances where there's an upfront "respectable" party, but with a group of thugs to act as enforcers.

That was a (quickly dropped) holdover from the book MASH, on which the movie and then the TV show were based. I've always thought it was funny that the author, whose name I can't recall at the moment, couldn't stand the TV show because it was so left-wing. There was a quote from him somewhere, to the effect of "No one in his mind would want war, but I was in a war and I think I know more about it than a bunch of actors blowing their runny, self-righteous noses."

Yeah, there's an enormous difference between the tone of the first seasons and seasons 10-11 in particular. I've always thought it had more to do with the change in showrunners, though. Larry Gelbart directed the first four seasons, then there were two more whose names I forget--one for season five, and then another for 6-11. That's really when the humor goes away. Plus Alan Alda wrote and/or directed a number of the episodes in that back half, and those tended to be especially gloomy, IIRC.
