Scenes from Houston

Video of an entire neighborhood, submerged by the relentless rains.

And Houston police Sergeant Steve Perez died driving to work, despite his wife warning him not to go. He went to his duty anyway -- but was trapped by floodwaters and drowned.

But amidst the catastrophe, human goodness as well:

More Houston Heroes noted by Bre Payton.

Someone once said that 10% of humanity is simply evil, and will always do the worst possible thing in any circumstance. 10% is almost wholly good, and will always do the right thing.

80%, this person said, would do the right thing or the wrong thing depending on what is socially permitted and socially encouraged. If society is generally wicked, they'll be wicked. If it's generally caring and brave, they'll be caring and brave -- if only to not look like shits.

Most of us are in that 80%, and such people can only hope that when a time of testing comes, we'll aspire to be part of that 10% and do the brave thing, the right thing, the good thing.

I can't see how that sergeant could drown in those flood waters, unless he panicked or couldn't swim (or both). Short of being injured or caught on something that keeps you underwater, everyone is able to survive such a situation.

From what I heard, someone reported that the Church was "inaccessible" (probably meaning the roads to it were flooded). MSN took it as "That money-grubber Joel and his sparkly wife don't care about _the _people_, shame on them!".

When the real case simply was, the road was blocked/dangerous, and possibly the parking lot was flooded and couldn't be used.

62 Re: service animals --

Any dog can be a "service animal." Knew a lady, always brought her dog into the supermarket. But, as Jose Feliciano, pointed out, No Dogs Allowed. So she went and got the dog certified as a service animal. Not a guide dog, but an emotional something or other. Legally, she can bring that dog anywhere.

I think this is a trend, as I've seen lots of dogs grace supermarkets before I got out of that biz.

So who knows? Maybe her "service animal" is a great Dane or a pit bull that's been trained to chew throats but she has paperwork. Could be she's just full of crap.

86 The overtopping of the Addicks and Barker impoundments has some people on Twatter screaming OMG DAM BREACH RUN.

No, not yet. They need to cool their jets.

However, these are earthen dams and the effects of overtopping water flow can scour at them and their foundations and turn into a genuine breach.

The state authorities and the Army Corps of Engineers currently say they see no risk of a breach. They've got inspectors crawling all over the structures.

If either or both of these genuinely breach, it'll be really bad news. Areas presently dry, or not ruinously wet, will get submerged. No real way to stop it.

That's another thing. My hometown church is a pretty good size. Can hold a couple hundred people.

Care to guess how many restrooms it has?

2. At least not counting the basement which I think might bring it up to 3, its been a long time since I've gone down there.

Oh and not two restrooms labeled by sex. I mean 2 small rooms with one toilet and a sink in them. Its built for people to come in and stay for an hour and a half and then leave. Its not set up for long term occupancy.

Do not stay in the car, it will flood and sink with you in it.
The thing about all modern cars is that they are all electrical, windows, door locks, everything. None of that will work if they get wet.
Always have a tool to break your passenger windows so you can get out of your car, should it become flooded or submerged. I have a special tool that comes with a seat belt cutter. I also gave one to all my relatives. Don't waste precious time on your windshield, those are extra tough. Focus on the passenger windows.

Ahem. It has been brought to our attention that a member of the Horde referred earlier today to several of our number being transported in what that individual referred to as being a "dog carrier".

Au contraire. At any time, if any of us occupy a carrier, it becomes a CAT carrier for the duration of our use, regardless of original designation or purpose.

We recommend you make a note of this. Journalistic organizations should add guidance to this effect to their style manual.

Repeat offenses of this sort will leave us no option other than to retain counsel, then aggressively seek injunctive relief and damages.

Exactly and one doesn't know and I expect people who posted that figure don't know either if the people of the church evacuated or are flooded in and are in no position to help people.

One of the last churches I served was in a flood plain. Old church. One bathroom probably installed in the 50's. They church was trying to keep the water out when Sandy hit. There would not have been enough people to help house people or enough room for them. All the church members were dealing with their own flooding. Our food pantry was closed for one Wednesday-then it opened up again the following Wednesday. That's what we did to help.

137 Wife's cousin was in a neighborhood off FM 1960 pretty close to where that video was taken. Street had been covered but house was dry until 2 nights ago, when water suddenly rose 3 feet in the middle of the night and flooded the house. Probably due to the water release from the flood control dams that was ordered. That couldn't be avoided; those dams are now overtopping in spite of the release, it's just too much water.

I'm pretty sure she wishes now that she had evacuated earlier; couldn't save the house, but she could have kept her car from being ruined. Well too late now.

138 When the images and stories begin to overwhelm me, I turn to YouTube and check in on the taxi driver who sheltered a hawk that flew into his cab right before the hurricane. Videos are of Harvey the Hurricane hawk.

This guy took care of the hawk until bird rescue came to take care of the bird. But then he posted more videos of animals and birds coming to his apartment. A comment joked that he was like a Disney princess. I would have to say a drunk Disney princess as he keeps talking about taking shots.

Anyway, in all the horribleness of this event, the loss of life, those poor family members drowning in their van, the police officer drowning in his squad car, we have this guy drinking and taking care of the strays coming his way. It brings a bit of lightness in a terrible, terrible situation.

He's harmless, as I told my priest. He's really just a motivational speaker, nothing more. He doesn't even "talk religion" as in there is absolutely zip, zero theology in his "sermons." It's rather fuzzy glad talkin' which is just fine. No different than any pep talk. Priest, a retired marine infantry colonel, was skeptical. I told him the only "danger" in the guy was from those who thought his pep-pep talks had any theological value and didn't learn anything else. However, he does get across a sorta Teddy Ruxpin happy-happy version of pseudoChristianity which isn't harmful, it's just plastic banana. Harmless.

Osteen is a shady character, but you can't just throw open the doors
on an arena that seats 10000+ without having people there to work...and
it's largely inaccessible right now,
---

A convention center and/or an arena is different than a church, even a mega church. There's things like food prep and food preparation that the convention center/ arena does that a church does not do to the same degree. I'm also guessing they have ample facilities for food storage at the former.

I doubt that any church would be a good long term refuge in something like a flood.

Lesson: You don't jam a big pile of newly homeless people who are all freaked out about everything into some big cavernous hall with no electricity, no running water, no sewage facilities, and ESPECIALLY no Security!!! So what if it's dry?

194 Jay Sekulow - ACLJ - 7 hours ago

The FBI has now reopened our FOIA case regarding the Clinton-Lynch tarmac meeting, after they previously denied they had any documents relevant to it. Without our FOIA litigation, the FBI's deception and complicity with the Obama DOJ over the surreptitious meeting would never have come to light.

The only reason they reopened the case is because we caught them red handed - lying to us and the American people. In fact, the same person who reopened the case is the same person who closed the case a year ago. In many cases, these federal bureaucrats are just never caught. They aren't held accountable because no one knows who they are or what nefarious actions they are taking. They remain in the bureaucracy as an entrenched, lawless class. They must be removed from their positions of power. In other words, the ultimate accountability comes in the form of personnel changes when these matters come to light.

253 I wouldn't blame Osteen for not opening up his church. When the last tsunami hit Japan the victims were very orderly, civilized, no looting. That's not the way it's generally been here in the aftermath of natural disasters. How do you resolve the moral dilemma? If someone is in need you should help them. If someone is trying to do harm to you and your family, you have the right to defend yourself and fend them off. If the people embody both, the second rule gets priority.

Seating. Lots of seating.

Not necessarily room for cots, not food storage, not food prep areas, not necessarily even a lot of bathrooms.

Seating. Holy books.

Some might have things like "community centers" that have a bit more facilities, but "kitchen used for the Mom's club luncheon" is way different than feeding dozens or more for unlimited days.

345 What's a cubit?

Posted by: josephistan at August 29, 2017 07:21 PM (ANIFC)

346 OK - this thing about the churches. Our church, along with thousands of others, is in contact with the city, county and federal authorities. They are planning to shelter people as soon as they can get beds, food and transportation from the large shelters.

Bringing people into a place that is unprepared is not better than leaving them at the GRB where at least there are meals. Many, many roads are impassable - Lakewood was an island for a day or two and could not open. I am not an Osteen fan, but those people were ready and willing to help as soon as there was an ability to get to the location and stock it.

Neither the feds nor the state could get the cots and meals in earlier. I-45 was FLOODED. I-10 was FLOODED. 59 was FLOODED. 610 and Beltway 8? FLOODED.

No one who is not here can have any idea of the magnitude of this - the local news has done a good job, but until you almost drive into 7 - foot high water several times, trying to get somewhere, you have no idea what you are dealing with.

It is hellish, and the people of Houston and the area are volunteering in insane numbers. The Red Cross volunteer website could not handle all the traffic and was down for a while.

The Buffalo Bayou continues to flood out west; many of my daughter's friends are homeless; people have had to evacuate multiple times because their first shelters FLOODED.

We invited several families to come stay with us - they could not get here. This is a slow-roll disaster and we will be volunteering for months to help people.

I think people will need to be moved to Austin and Dallas for part of the duration. Or high schools will need to consolidate and others converted to apartments - I don't know.

This is like a displaced population due to a war. That is the only thing I can think to compare it to.

I am a long-time lurker, but I just had to respond to the charge that Osteen, and other churches here, don't care. They are churches, not military logistical experts. They stand ready to provide shelter in partnership with the military logistical experts, though.

Because it's funny Jack.

Shit - I guess I have to explain it. Here at AoSHQ, there's a shit-pot of inside jokes, memes, running gags, and so on and so forth. One of them is the notion of Jeff Sessions sleeping.

So - people do this thing called "socking" where we make up a name that adds to the joke. I prefer "Jeff S from Alabama". I like to add a Crimson Tide reference at the end.

Now - in a minute - somebody called "BEN ROTHELISBERGER" may post explaining about why that's funny as well.

Humor Jack. Catch it.

400 Tom Servo, that neighborhood is many miles from Addicks and Barker, and is not upstream from either one of the dams. They're due west, and Cypress Creek runs from northwest to northeast of town and eventually flows into Spring Creek in the town of Humble.

I have a correction, though. They pass the street signs at the intersection of Rolling Creek Drive and Elk River Road. That isn't anywhere near my route to work (nor of anyone else's, who doesn't live near the intersection) but I swear there's a house whose first floor is mostly under water with the same weirdness in the garage door windows.
