North Korea Lobs Another Missile, This Time Over Northern Japan

Reports of North Korea behaving better may have been exaggerated.

However, they're also back to doing what they've done for decades -- putting missiles up over Japan -- which we insanely let them get away with and established the precedent that they're allowed to do that.

They're not threatening the US.

But, that could change.

They've also backed it up to some degree - they've killed US servicemen, seized the Pueblo, kidnapped people from South Korea and Japan, whacked out South Korean officials....and the only response is basically crickets. The US, South Korea, and Japan may periodically talk tough back, but they don't ever actually do anything beyond some meaningless sanctions that they don't really want to enforce anyway.

30 Pity that the "Rods From God" idea never seems to have been developed nor deployed.

A ripple-delivery of a thousand or so of those along the dug-deep Nork artillery North of the DMZ, would have a most salutatory effect.

Deny them the "artillery retaliation" option, and effectively de-fang Pongyang, all at the same time.

Of course, a few more such could be targeted on all of their missile development, construction and launch sites.

As for the nuke reactors, labs and weaponizing sites?

Those should be confiscated by China, as we really don't need any third rate, recycled Loral technology, anyway.

Thus, no need to invade, no need to nation-build.

Just utterly neutralize Lil' Kim.

And his own people will soon take care of him, as the minor detail that he actually is.

35 I'll put my flame suit on, I don't want the US invading North Korea until there is some Pearl harbor type moment. Only it won't be us, it will be someone like Japan or South Korea

If we roll in there, every country will be lining up against us to condemn it including South Korea. And North Korea will bomb the shit out of Seoul and the US will be blamed.

I don't want to spend $10+ trillion cleaning up the place and having hundreds of thousands of South Koreans killed.

39 I'd love to see the escalation menu presented to PDT.

Wonder if seizing all North Korean vessels - that are readily seize-able - is on it.

And a "no-fly missile zone" ..... such that any but the shortest range missile tests (and certainly those such as just happened) are intercepted. If feasible, that would be the perfect escalation step: no good proportionate step available to the adversary.

But dunno the technical feasibility of this, or the cost/benefit calculation to displaying our actual capability (which would include intel early warning) by doing so.

While things have changed, culturally, much faster than mere generational change would have implied in those areas, there are still political/cultural inhibitions to "normal" foreign policy and defense activity.

They can, but if they do we've said we pull out. They don't get our protection and we lose our naval bases. They've been happier with us there looking mean and we've been happier having naval bases there than them having nukes. When I say "let," I mean that we don't threaten them with vanishing if they do decide to nuke up. It's been that that has kept China from over expanding for a long long time. We're not terribly impressed with Japan, but the Chinese still hate and fear them. Other countries aren't as ahistorical as western civ.

Basically, a 3,000 lb., guidance-system-steered, titanium telephone pole.

Pointy, ceramic nose for re-entry.

Guesstimate of Mach 16 through upper atmosphere, probably Mach 10+ for impact.

Very deep penetration before non-chemical explosion, merely from thermal transformation within the radically decelerating mass.

And if dropped into granite mountains? Less penetration, of course.

But the spalling effect in the stone and it's natural fissures, would result in the substrate turning into the world's largest fragmentation grenade. Instantly.

Given that it's a munition-less system, I don't think it even violates the no weapons in space treaties.

Wish it was up there, already!

93 The Norks are China's butt-boys. We let China get away with all sorts of shit and we let their pet get away with tons of shit and then we pretend that China doesn't have control over the Norks. Even worse, we used to help the Norks out with "humanitarian" gifts (don't know if we still do). That is the sort of shit that only the most retarded sort of person does. The Norks should have been starved to death - even more than the little Kims have been doing to them, anyway.

There is nothing dumber and more dangerous and destructive than sending "humanitarian" aid to countries with dog-shit governments, especially those that are our enemies, and especially, especially those that we are still technically in a state of war with.

94 The NORKs have about 70 diesel electric subs, from what I see, with the newest including some ballistic missile subs.

Sinking a few is a way to ratchet up the engagement, with some deniability. Fat Boy needs a punch in the nose.

The other alternative is to go full Bannon: Don't let China use the NORKs as a trade bargaining chip. Don't do shit until Japan and the South get off their ass.

Put an LA class sub on every one of their boats and a timed attack. Sink all of em at once. And hit em so hard they can't communicate what happened.

106 There's a reason NK and Iran were in the "axis of evil". They were actively co-ordinating (mostly NK doing it for $$, Iran doing it for "flexibility" in evading sanctions on WMD tech and in helping proxies - Syria - with their WMD tech). Been the case for years.

Iraq was sort of the outlier in the axis. They had the potential and resources to do it all themselves, once sanctions were gone. And of course a history of recklessness far exceeding even NK's or that of any significant state since You Know Who. But NK and Iran were/are very much an axis in select areas of concern.

We have the technology to take out North Korea's entire electrical grid. A country without electricity is mission killed. The even better news is that their portable generators will run out of fuel very quickly.

190 "And one of our limited number of SM3 Block ICBM Interceptor platforms in Theater was just in a crash and taken off line"

The older _Ticonderogas_, with a lot of hard miles on them, could have been refitted with the intention that they would do limited sea duty for the ballistic missile defense mission only. Give them reservist crews.

That would have really beefed up available BMD capability on a dynamically crisis-dispatchable basis, without burdening the rest of an already overstretched fleet.

But, no. Those Ticos all ended up as razor blades and beer cans and artificial reefs. Because nothing could be allowed to interfere with Big Navy's new surface warfare champion, the _Zumwalt_ class.

Yes, the Zumwalts. The purported "destroyers" the size of an old-time pocket battleship, costing as much as a _Nimitz_ class nuclear powered carrier, with ammunition for the main battery that turned out to be wildly too expensive to procure in quantity.

Machiavelli makes the case that it is to better to be loved than feared because people will do more for you out of love the they will out of fear. He goes on to say that if you cannot be loved then you must make certain that you are feared. Feared is decidedly less desirable but more achievable than being loved.

Well, the point is the same at any level, better to be loved than feared, but if you cannot be loved then you had should be feared. The likelihood of being loved or reliably loved or sufficiently loved when dealing with international relations is another problem. I agree that it is not wise to rely upon the love of other nations because I have never seen any evidence of such love and have always believed we should never rely upon the goodwill of other nations.

275 The Karman line which is the line between the Earths surface and outer space in ~62 miles. No way the missile rose 2000 miles.

276 >>>>Sorry, I want everyone of these countries pissing their pants at what we
might do and we have a President that believes in a strong hand.

Ever wonder why there has never been anything more than a whole lot
of high level sniping at Israel? Yes , intifadas and a shit load of
terrorists, but the asswipes have never mounted an invasion force.
.
.
.They did in 1947, 66, 73, 82, etc. And with some help from us they managed to kick a$$ for the most part.

277 @93: "especially those that we are still technically in a state of war with."

At least not on camera.

279 you know what would be the ultimate deniability?

Grab an asteriod and steer it where you need it to go.

Like go grab one and park it in some orbit way, way out there, and just let it sit until you need it.

Then break it out of orbit and drop it where you want it to go.

Not an instant delivery system but a handy way to drop an anvil on someone without them seeing it coming.

280 I downloaded OUR DINOSAUR HAS BEEN STOLEN. It's a Disney movie that is clearly racist today because Peter Ustinov plays a Chinese man. I had to save it before Amazon or Disney buries it.

282 Here's the warning at the beginning of A Clockwork Orange

"This here's a dobby cine, but you ain't got the keeshkas fer the old in-out, yous best grab your droogs and skitebirds and head out for some moloka and steaky-wake instead."

283 28 @13:"North Korea has always talked trash."

285 Modern puritans have gotten just as bad as the bowdlerizers who took cutting shears to every piece of literature in the 19th century that they thought had a dirty word in it.

It's the same old shit now as then, come round in an even more vicious fashion.

Our Puritans are worse. The former did want to lead people into corruption. They were trying to do something virtuous. Our Puritans are just power hungry, bitter, violent rage junkies. Many of them perverted. There is nothing virtuous in their desires.
