TV Thread: Mayweather/McGregor, Game of Thrones, Twin Peaks The Return (FINALLY!), MTV VMAs, etc.

Some big TV stuff this weekend.

The "Video Music Awards," anachronistically still given out by a channel that no longer plays music videos, were an orgy of anti-Trump virtue signalling.

Did you see it? I sure didn't. But, it happened.

Any of you watch the Mayweather/McGregor fight? I didn't. Wanted to, but conked out early. Some of you must have: It only made $700 million at about $100 a rent.

I didn't watch it, but apparently it was a good fight. McGregor, I read, actually won the first three rounds, but Mayweather used his boxing skills to make sure he didn't give McGregor that one Golden Punch that could win the fight for him, and wound up winning in the tenth round on a TKO.

Vox advised everyone that they should not watch the fight because it would be terrible. And racist. (Yes, really.)

You know, when you want to know about sports, combat arts, or anything manly at all -- Vox is your go-to source.

Incidentally, there may have been some code embedded in the feed to help track down people who were illegally streaming it.

I won't get into Game of Thrones or Twin Peaks because anyone who cares actually watched it and knows what the deal is.

Caution: It's pretty much impossible to speak about the latter two without giving away spoilers so if you haven't seen them yet, maybe just skip this thread until later.

5 Conor McGregor proved that, had it been MMA rules, or street fight no rules, he would have won.

I'd be happy to take on a Great White Shark. In a parking lot with a machete. Home court advantage, baby.

18 , but Game of Thrones is an incredible series and this season was pretty phenomenal.

The coming end of the series seems to have focused them.

Earlier, one guy would whinge at another "your father tried to kill my father" and they'd spend seven episodes talking about it.

This season it's "your father tried to kill my father", "yes, and you tried to kill me. Let's just get on with it".

One cavil: Danny got nekkid without really showing anything. Ripoff.

20 Glad McGregor went the 10 rounds. Shows heart. But fighting a boxer in boxing is an uphill climb.

I don't watch TV but I did watch the Taylor Swift music video for 'Look What You Made Me Do' and it moved. Not because of the music, though. Witty ending scene.

Tired of GOT but I'm absurdly glad Jon and Dany got it on. Stupid writing, but it's something Martin has probably been writing towards for 20 years.

52 Everything us going much quicker on GoT but I think it's mainly because (a) they're no longer tied so tightly to the books because they passed the events of the last published one something like two seasons ago, and (b) I'm sure these actors all want to get it over with to get on to other stuff instead of dragging it all out another five or six (or fifty) seasons like they would if they were on a GRR Martin timeline.

56 GoT is rushing the plot along to get to an end point. So there's some deux ex machina plot devices getting used.

Spoiler alert:

Littlefinger was my guy in the dead pool.

I liked watching the "big family reunion" but it was a dumb idea tactically on Tyrion's part.

Cersei is outsmarting Tyrion every step of the way. Even her letting him live is part of her plot.

Is Cersei's unborn child actually Euron Greyjoy's? I've called Jamie's killing Cersei (he's the actual younger brother in the witch's prophecy, not Tyrion).

Looking forward to Jon meeting up with Samwell, who'll tell Jon that he's banging his Hot Blond Auntie. Jon can then tell Samwell, yes, the very one who had her fire-breathing dragon melt your father and brother into glass.

I think it's supposed to be weeks worth of time inbetween. In earlier seasons they'd alternate which Characters appeared in some episodes, so it wouldn't seem so jarring to have them appear all over the place. Two weeks between a character leaving one place and showing up in the next would correspond to several weeks of travel in-universe.

74

Mayweather won the fight according to the rules (and he was a complete class act after the fight, gracious and complementary to McGregor), but some of the mental games he was playing were bullshit.

Mac would start landing a few good ones and Mayweather kept turning his back to McG to try to draw a rabbit punching foul. Eventually, the ref let McG keep hitting Mayweather in the back of the head and kidnys because he was intentionally giving McG his back.

Little things like that, while tactically brilliant, made it a bit frustrating to watch, but it was nonetheless an exciting and enjoyable fight. After all, if you can't complain about a boxer's antics during a fight, that takes half the fun out of it.

It was definitely worth the price with a small group of friends to watch it with.

84 77 Come on Netflix! Bring back the new Battle Star Galactica! I see that tall blonde woman in my dreams ... but she is always across the room, and then I lose my car keys, or I wake up with a start when I think I hear the doorbell at 3:30AM. No justice.

85 It would say the good thing about the fight was that it mostly lived up to the hype from what I hear.

Netflix has a Death Note live action movie. It's not horrible, but suffers from the fact they try to cram in a lot in 1:40 minutes.

There are only a few big house/families in the series. There's the usual royal inbreeding and crossbreeding with some special plot-couplings.

So you DO have people who aren't related, but a lot of the players are related by blood or marriage at this point.

well, yes, however, the BIG MYSTERY the show has at its heart is about an unknown parentage. But it's just that one Secret Parentage/Secret Familial Relationship thing.

Though there are people who speculate like the dickens that another major character, Tyrion, is ALSO a the result of a secret pairing.

But I don't believe that -- I think it would get silly to have two major characters sired by Targaryan fathers.

No, I'm holding out hope for Tyrion/Sansa shipping.

The dragons will die off next season. Drogon will be killed in the big climactic battle in episode 6, and Jon will die at the end of the episode killing the Night King. Episode 7 will show the aftermath: Dany gives birth to twins, and rules. Cersei has been driven mad and is cared for at Casterly rock by Jamie, who may kill her out of mercy. Sansa rules the North and is married to Tyrion.

But I'd need to see it to really get it. Also, typically Mayweather wears down his opponents, so early rounds are a study of his opponent. He's not in a hurry. He'd never go a minute in the octagon though. IMHO.

Posted by: Cannibal Bob at August 28, 2017 05:00 PM (/H6uR)

Padding time for the cameras goes all the way back to the infancy of film with the 'exhibition' bout between heavyweight champion Jack Johnson and middleweight champion Stanley Ketchel. The two agreed beforehand to stretch it out. They also (supposedly) agreed that Johnson wouldn't rough Ketchel up because they were just putting on a show. Johnson reneged on the agreement and was beating Ketchel ragged.

Ketchel came out on the 12th round highly pissed off and hit Johnson with all he had--which was considerable since Ketchel is considered one of the hardest hitting middleweights in the history of the sport. It was enough to knock the heavyweight down but not out, and Johnson got up and hit Ketchel so hard that one of Ketchel's knocked-out teeth was embedded in his glove. And Ketchel stayed knocked out for ten minutes.

Stanley Ketchel was awesome, by the way. Look him up: a true moron (the good kind).

Well, we understand boats. We don't understand zombies, so the show has to put in the work to 'sell' us on that.

Things that break immersion are almost always things we understand that don't work the way we expect.

Me, too. But give Mayweather credit, he stopped that from happening by surviving the first 5 rounds (even if McG got rounds 1, 3, 4, and maybe 6). The first few went to McG (I don't think he landed enough to win round 2), but McG couldn't get more than 2-3 heavy shots landed at any time. Like McGregor himself said at the end of the fight, Mayweather was just so composed. A smart, tactical 40 year old justifiably beat the crap out of the brash 30 year old. Yes, they are saying "F--K Donald Trump."

BTW... I know some people who work on the design side of the VMAs. Some are Brits, some are American, from 45 to 60.

My guess is that all this SJW crap is coming from MTV itself, and the 40 something liberals "writer/producers"who want to cash in on the SJW anger.

Plus... I also *suspect* -- but do not know conclusively-- that the artists who perform are given a VERY wide berth in terms of what they can do and say.

So if X performer wants to go on a rant against Trump, it's cool. Anything to keep the artists showing up and performing.

In the richest family in the kingdom, the twin sister and brother Lanisters have been fucking since their teens and had three children which Cersei pretended were her lawful kingly husbands, the revelation of which drives a lot of the plot in the early seasons.

The show is a success because it's character-driven, and there's a lot of medieval and other history put in a blender.

Christopher, I agree. I liked the first two seasons, and I actually like the whole concept of it being set in modern-day London. But it just got crazier and crazier.

If you watched the first episode of this season, then you should watch the other two just to see it all tie itself into knots. The last episode is so utterly ridiculous I can't believe they actually made it.

And I agree that Jeremy Brett is the best. My husband and I have watched every single one of that series, some more than once.

Yeah. It was modestly entertaining, but Iron Fist was insufferable. Jessica Jones was not only annoying but forgettable, and the notion that the Luke Cage guy would give a shit about her was laughable. Personally, I enjoy watching the Luke Cage character and actor, though, and liked that series, as padded (and incorrectly backstoried) as it was---a black character who cares about his own neighborhood and people. But the Defenders entire series really fails because Iron Fist is just this complete enema nozzle. So many plot holes as well. Whatever, it was free (with preexisting subscription) and worth a few hours of my time.

I think its mostly geek chic (big show with magic, kinda and sorta some fantasy elements woo!), tits, and for some reason its getting huge hype.

But its not even in the top 10 of television programs, as Ace has pointed out: its hyped far beyond its actual success. It has cultural impact beyond its viewership. In 1982, they'd have canceled a show with ratings like that and chalked it up to another Manimal

It's not that the new series is too outré or arty -- the weirdest bits are the tastiest bits, I think -- it's the loooong drawn out scenes and poor timing in some of the "humorous" parts. It's like Lynch told the actors "keep it going -- work past funny until you get to uncomfortable, and then power through all the way to boring".

420 >>>It's not that the new series is too outré or arty -- the weirdest bits are the tastiest bits, I think -- it's the loooong drawn out scenes and poor timing in some of the "humorous" parts. It's like Lynch told the actors "keep it going -- work past funny until you get to uncomfortable, and then power through all the way to boring".

sometimes but I also find some of these extended sequences genuinely funny. For example: "Wally Brando," Candy taking six minutes to deliver a three word direction to someone ("Come this way"), all the different people visiting Dougie Jones' house while Hutch and Candace are staking it out.

"Bitch On Wheels" is a character type that Hollywood keeps trying to convince us to enjoy.

The problem with the BOW archetype is that everyone everyone has mad the acquaintance of a BOW at least once in their lives...

and they always suck. Every. Single. Time.

I'm guessing 2nd season of JJ flops unless she's got a great roster of villains.

Easy. Season 1 was the worst.

Awful stuff. And boring.

Boring and unrealistic is no way to attract viewers, son.

470 Though there are people who speculate like the dickens that another major character, Tyrion, is ALSO a the result of a secret pairing.

But I don't believe that -- I think it would get silly to have two major characters sired by Targaryan fathers.

++++

The foreshadowing cuts against your theory, I think. If I'm not mistaken, there have been only three characters who have been able to touch the (living) dragons: Dany, of course, plus Tyrion and Jon.

Maybe the writers just wanted to throw a bit of misdirection at those speculating that Tyrion is a Targ. But, I think he will turn out to really be one.
