From Mashable: The 12 FOOT storm surge will be exacerbated by the sea level rise caused by climate change. Yes, if you believe man has caused the Earth to warm 0.5 degrees in the past 100 years and that warming has lead to a 0.1in rise in sea levels, then I guess the folly of man has made what would otherwise be a 12 foot surge a 12.1 foot surge. About that debt ceiling article from Vic in the last post: the debt ceiling was reached in March. Ryan and McConnell had 6 months to do something, and Trump was begging them to do something. Treachery through and through. Though I wouldn't withhold a layer of stupidity on Ryan's part too.

If a GOP led Senate and Congress, with the Presidency, cannot even get a deficit neutral budget through, then WTF did we hire them for? That which cannot continue, won't.
We're over 100% debt to GDP now, so as they say: bad things happen slowly at first, then quickly. In your lifetime, you will never again be able to earn enough interest in a CD that can keep up with inflation and there is no safe harbor for it other than your mattress. Those retirement accounts will be nationalized, too, bet on it. if we make it 20 more years, I'll be shocked. Posted by: Chupacabra at August 26, 2017 08:40 AM (pz6b2) 43

Village Idiot's Apprentice,
Now that little VIA has joined the Navy would he be allowed to use the slang that is in this sailor story, or is all of it non-pc? Me and Willy were lollygagging by the scuttlebutt after being aloft to boy butter up the antennas and were just perched on a bollard eyeballing a couple of bilge rats and flangeheads using crescent hammers to pack monkey shit around a fitting on a handybilly. All of a sudden the dicksmith started hard-assing one of the deck apes for lifting his pogey bait. The pecker-checker was a sewer pipe sailor and the deckape was a gator. Maybe being blackshoes on a bird farm surrounded by a gaggle of cans didn't set right with either of those gobs. The deck ape ran through the nearest hatch and dogged it tight because he knew the penis machinist was going to lay below, catch him between decks and punch him in the snot locker. He'd probably wind up on the binnacle list but Doc would find a way to gundeck the paper or give it the deep six to keep himself above board. We heard the skivvywaver announce over the bitch box that the bread-burners had SOS ready on the mess decks so we cut and run to avoid the clusterfuck when the twidgets and cannon cockers knew chow was on. We were balls to the wall for the barn and everyone was preparing to hit the beach as soon as we doubled-up and threw the brow over. I had a ditty bag full of fufu juice that I was gonna spread on thick for the bar hogs with those sweet bosnia's. Sure beats the hell out of brown bagging. Might even hit the acey-duecy club and try to hook up with a westpac widow. They were always leaving snail trails on the dance floor on amateur night. Lots of lightening, heavy rain, and definite wind right now. Since our neighborhood has drained well in the past and our electric lines are buried, my main concern is a lightening strike to electric service. And I hope that Live Oak roots go deeper than the regular sort because with this wet of soil it wouldn't take much wind to knock trees onto houses.

Morning y'all, from a slightly damp Houston area.
Yesterday turned out to be pretty mild, but the rain showed up in force around 0200, and it's been somewhere between heavy and mostly heavy since then. The good news is that ol 'Harv has not generated the winds forecasted earlier, so everything seems to be staying in place pretty well. For those interested, Harris County Texas has a pretty neat "Flood Warning System" you can access online - the various rain gauges and stream heights are in real time. I'm the only one up, anyway, as copious quantities of "hurricanes" were indulged overnight... Posted by: Anon a mouse... at August 26, 2017 08:52 AM (MINbv) 75

What do you do with the carp after you catch them?
Pay close attention, as this is an old family recipe. My old family, Clean the carp, and open into filets. Find a fresh pine board two inches bigger than the carp all the way around, and use brass pins to stake out the carp, skin and all, on the board. Then put into a brick smoker, fired with hardwood, for two full days. Keep that fire moistened. After two days, open the smoker, throw away the carp, and eat the board. NASA was originally created by the Confederacy, after an idea put forth by Robert E.Lee.
You're a lot closer to the truth than you think, smart-ass! Ohio and Michigan were at war because the French, in their a-priori Cartesian innocence, assumed that the southern tips of lakes Erie and Michigan must be exactly straight across from each other, because, rational. This turned out not to be so, in practice, so the federals dispatched the Assistant Astronomer of the Military Academy to re-survey the boundary line. That guy's work has been double-checked by satellite shots, and he turns out to have been a damned good surveyor and astronomer, the man who ended the war between the states, Robert E. Lee. It will be interesting to see if McTurd, Rino and their merry band of GOPe swamp creatures can override a presidential veto on the budget (assuming that Trump exercises the veto).
I sincerely hope that Trump just shuts the federal government down and keeps it that way for a long time. He's not getting anything he wants out of Congress this first term anyways, so let's have at it. He can win it. Those numbers of transgender in the military are extrapolations of estimates. A transgender studies department and some university estimated the percentage of trans in the general population then surmised that percentage must be higher in the military because reasons then applied that percentage to the number of active/ guard/ reserve troops. @242 And yet, that isn't what killed you. Huh.
Ohio was first claimed by Virginia, then caught up in Jefferson's French-Science "Square States" scheme (Northwest Ordinance, the Second Constitution). It was the very model of what corrupt land deals can become under Pres. Washington, cut up six ways from Sunday and sold virtually at a loss by the desperate Eastern fund-raisers. Indian tribes were not the only ones cheated out of their ownership claims. Ohio militia, called out on false alarms and dragooned into building Hull's Trace over several campaign seasons, didn't turn out for the Fort Meigs invasion. "It's a Columbus thing, you wouldn't understand." (Not really fair, Columbus wasn't the capdle yet, but disdain runs deep). Pennsylvanians held Fort Meigs. There is a keystone on the cemetery gate. But, consistently, over the course of several wars, it was the Kentuckians who were willing to fight for northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, and they died by the thousands doing it, too. Right by the courthouse in Monroe, near Mrs Custer's house, is a memorial to "Kentuckians of Michigan." Out at Willow Run there is a bluegrass club named that. Properly viewed, most of Ohio is a county of old Kentucky. Posted by: Stringer Davis at August 26, 2017 10:30 AM (H5rtT) 283

Posted by: Anon a mouse... at August 26, 2017 10:55 AM (MINbv) Coming in at the middle (tail end?) of a conversation here, but I've generally come to believe that the vast majority of people who identify as left leaning (i.e. vote for Democrats) are quite incongruent between what they vote for and how they live. In other words, the vote, and the constant ragging about about awful things Republicans do, that's the beginning and end of the identity. How they actually live... holding down decent jobs, paying mortgages, raising children, buying things, going on vacations, saving for retirement... it's really no different from how so-called conservatives (and Republican voting dimwits) live. They just chatter about different things. That's pretty much it. Posted by: BurtTC at August 26, 2017 11:04 AM (Pz4pT) 393

Rain is tapering off - the massive rain band to the NE of what's left of Harv is drifting off to the N, so much of the Houston area is either clear or clearing. Got a pic from friends in Katy and there's almost sunlight!

Finally some news leaking out about my beach town, Port A.
Ferries are down and the one road is blocked by debris so it's very sketchy. My condo building is ok-- now I know why it was built as a tall ugly bunker. The USCG building next to it was 2/3 destroyed. USCG went to rescue crews of two tugs that sank in the channel nearby, but I haven't heard if they succeeded. Some folks didn't evacuate and no doubt are needing some help right now. Posted by: stace at August 26, 2017 11:11 AM (IKy84) 400

Posted by: phineas gage at August 26, 2017 11:11 AM (XsVWn) Yes, the feeling part, it is something they thirst for constantly, because their actual lives are not enough. People call liberalism a mental illness, and I think that's not entirely untrue. There are personality disorders that fairly fully match this need. The emotionally dis-regulated, subject to the whims of the world, getting blown this way and that. The difference perhaps, between liberals (I don't like using that word here) and people with Borderline, histrionic and narcissistic (and yes, many "liberals" have these diagnoses) is that the liberals who appear to keep it together have this out. A mechanism that works to keep them regulated. Most of the time. Posted by: BurtTC at August 26, 2017 11:16 AM (Pz4pT) 407

A string of snips in one comment. From "the heart of Texas" listening to FOX News Channel national coverage of Harvy since early morning, it is damned infuriating. To go to some idiot, they cut off Lt. Gov. Patrick's succinct report which they had teased the audience to stay tuned to hear. Previously, their FOX idiotic surmising smart ass comments from the joker who is reporting from (this morning) calm Corpus Christi who drove to and from epicenter Category 4 hit Rockport, to stand for one short segment of minutes at an intersection while crowing at the miserable first response efforts because he "only saw two 'vintage' firetrucks pass by" his intersection. While he was talking, a black Cadillac Escalade zoomed through the dry intersection behind. YESTERDAY in anticipation, I watched Austin's local NBC meteorologist named Yeoman sent to report from Rockport, informing us that everyone in Rockport had evacuated as advised to do. Only emergency services were staying in town for the Hurricane; that they were all located inside the one municipal structure built specifically to withstand these storm winds. And that they were not going to respond to downed trees in roads yesterday, as calls reporting damage were coming in, not until the storm subsided. It was easy enough to understand why. More downing of trees bound to happen, and going out during the worst Cat.4 winds and downpours was foolishly risky. Of course yesterday evening, power lines were still intact. The public citizenry are out of town, gone to high ground inland -- told to go to Austin, which I joked refugees better try the hotels above Austin's multiple creeks and low ground roadways which ALWAYS FLOOD as waters seeking the path of least resistance head into the Lower Colorado to drain. Our best thoughts towards those facing the storm's wrath. And our churches and civic organizations are as ever perpetually organized in advance with routines to provide for so many whom Big Brother manages to lose "through the cracks". Texas, y'all recall, stood ready and prepared before Katrina offering aid. And all the New Orleans people whom Kay Baily Hutchison imported have remained to this day, changing the dynamics of Houston, and elected officials to D.C. since for the worse. My better half remarked that we won't see any rescue aid coming from the DNC or the local Democratic Party organizations, most certainly none from the Soros mercenary antifa or black lives matter members. It takes the element of grace within, not violence, to offer and provide the aid and hospitality for those harmed by storms which most certainly hit populations "equal opportunity" regardless of ideology, color, age, income or political affiliation. And despite the influx from California, Texas takes care of its own not because of Big Oil money as FOX News Channel stated in contrast to New Orleans which also has oil refineries. But because Texans take care of their own, regardless of color, and take care of their neighbors as well.
