Wokest Woke Takes In The History of Woke:
I missed out on the eclipse thread yesterday, so here is my eclipse story.
At Casa de Muse, the sun would be 99.3% occluded at the max. Mrs. Muse said that was good enough for her, but I said no, you will regret not seeing the full 100%. So with a long-time friend and Muse son #2, we packed up some picnic chairs, water bottles, and our special eclipse glasses and drove 30 miles north, where we found a public park which wasn't too crowded. Afterwards, Mrs. Muse agreed with me that the 30 mile drive just to get that extra .7% was well worth it. The skies were clear, and the temperature felt like it was in the high 60s or low 70s. Perfect weather. As the eclipse progressed, it seemed not to be getting very much darker, which surprised us. But we did notice the temperature steadily dropping, and I was starting to regret not bringing a long-sleeved shirt. It actually didn't look like it was getting darker until the occlusion hit 90%. Then the darkness visibly increased. And as soon as it hit totality, WOW. At 100%, the park was as dark as dawn, not pitch dark like night, but "light" dark like cool, clear mornings when the sun is just below the horizon and will be up shortly. Or like a deep twilight, I guess. Then the corona flared out and it was yuuge, and spectacular. It was amazing; I've never seen anything quite like it. Everybody clapped and cheered. That was fun. At our location, totality lasted for one minute and 49 seconds. And then we packed up and left. The traffic home was miserable, but we endeavored to persevere, and we eventually made it back. The blackened moon, with the corona shooting out all sides was stunning to behold, and next to that the best part was after the totality, the piercing brilliant light that burst forth immediately after.
It was hard to take it all in. The shadows on the ground were something amazing as well.
If you were not in the 100%, I would highly recommend finding a place in 2024 where you can see it. Those brief moments before, during and after, were all worth the price of admission. Whatever that price is.

More than a few times when we would get in the car talking about where we were going and the wife's Iphone would have the GPS app up with that destination already loaded from her contacts. The first two times it happened I couldn't figure out how her GPS app knew ahead of time that we were going to her sisters house.
The third time it happened is when I figured out her phone was listening to us talk. It is really creepy in an odd sort of way.

Hi, I have an antifa question. For a brigade on a given mission (like the Charlottesville counterprotest), is there any hierarchy within that brigade? Ie. are there a few who can issue orders to the rest, or is it just a free for all melee? And do they know the identity of who ultimately decides for them to go on this or that mission? Or do they just receive their instructions via some sort of untraceable call, or memory stick in the mail?

First, supremacy and nationalism aren't even remotely the same thing. White nationalist is a lot closer to Nazi (what with the nationalism), but a white supremacist is focused on race, not nationalism. These are literally different things with different end goals.
Words means things, and at this point, I simply cannot accept anything those white-supremacist shouting people are saying because it's clear they don't understand the words they are using.

First contact began at 1025. I had seen an annular in 2012 in NM and partials all over the place but the most I had seen partial was that annular eclipse which took out 95% of the sun. So I was determined to see this, and past 70%, I knew things would get interesting, to say the least.
The light...looked weird. If you didn't know the eclipse was happening, you could tell the light had a different quality to it. Not as intense. Not as bright.
As I was looking at that, and noticing the sharpening of shadows, a woman nearby said to me "do you hear that? The crickets think it's dusk". And so they did, as you could hear them chirping all around...and at this point it was about 1120, 25 minutes away from totality.
When totality hit...here I was looking through the eclipse glasses and I "lost" the sun so I took them off. It was at that moment I saw the diamond ring/Bailey's beads. Then that stopped and there it was: the sun, fully eclipsed. I could see the flares and prominences coming off the sun's "surface", the corona, stars, and at least one planet (most likely Venus). It looked like sunset for 360 degrees around us. People were cheering and yelling out loud in exultation. As was I!
This vision hung in the skies for 2 minutes and change as we were close to the center line. Then it stopped and it was time to put on the glasses as the diamond ring appeared on the other side.
The last contact was at 1309 MDT and I began my drive back to the hotel room in Denver...and I got there at 2330 MDT.
Would I do it all again? Without hesitation, yes. April 8, 2024, the path of totality goes through my beloved home state of TX and even through most of my beloved (if not infuriating) hometown of San Antonio. And if you have not seen totality, you MUST see it at least once in your life.

The thing is, a lot of culture really is closely linked with "race" (or ethnicity).
The WASPy founders were unique, and add to their WASPiness, the concepts of leaving the king/pope concept behind and forming a place where they could have a government that recognized individual liberty.
But much of the black Christian culture fits in with that just fine. So I don't like the use of "white nationalist", except in the sense of a desire to retain that heritage. NOT in the sense that this is a country to be run by whites, though ted Kennedy did promise our demographics would not be changed by his 1965 immigration act.
But "white" is now so toxic, people fear identifying any pride i their heritage, and all other cultures are either "moral equivalences", or actually superior and victims to whom we white folk owe reparations, even if we escaped servitude from Germany in the late 1800s.
But all groups are praised for clinging to their culture, while white Christians are condemned and it is demanded they denounce themselves, constantly.
That is what must be rejected.

Eclipse was as described by others: spectacular during totality (~2:30 minutes in Casper), though not as dark as I expected (I saw the eclipse in 1979 (totality), but can barely remember it).
Drive home was the worst I have ever seen, a literal 100-mile traffic jam (starting at Glendo State Park), averaging about 15mph. Got home in the wee hours of the morning.

but once the story kicked in, very well crafted (but not 'fun') movie. Michael Shannon (the dying detective, who was Zod in the newer superman flick, and had that ongoing role on Boardwalk Empire) may be the Robert Duvall of his generation.
The way the movie skewered the people who worked at the art gallery was masterful.
I never recognize Aaron Taylor Johnson until the credits role - he's a little different in everything.

Nocturnal Animals is in the group of movies that are very well done and worth your time watching but are not happy fun times.
This is a movie that shows human nature as it is, not as people want it to be and that is as brutal as you think.
I finally got around to watching Morgan the other day and I quite enjoyed it. Anya Taylor-Joy is interesting to watch. I liked what they did with the palette and the makeup on her where, for example, her lips were always tinged with blue. It added to the uncanny valley.
If you haven't seen The Witch, I highly recommend that. There's another movie that is uncompromising about human nature and that people did lose their minds over because how dare this not be the obvious thing I thought it was!

I was not surprised that his voice was "small" - he was a small-framed guy. And his Russian would actually be easier to understand - if the audio were clear - than some native Russian speakers, as Georgians speak a sort of simplified Russian (pronunciation).
Surprises were that he did an extended defense of the Ribbentrop pact, and repeatedly cited support from America and the British as causes for optimism - and also gave effusive thanks to both for their declarations of support.

I saw a really good documentary on the Soviet/Afghan war.
It's about some Americans trying to do some behind the lines stuff. One of them gets kidnapped, and this other guy basically goes in to rescue his pal, and blows stuff up.

Saw Morgan, mostly liked it. (side comment - Does Kate Mara ever age?) Too freaked out by what I've seen/heard about The Witch, gonna have to DVR it and watch it in the middle of a sunny day, with occasional pauses for sanity. I am a giant scaredycat when it comes to supernatural (particularly demonic-themed) horror. Still have never seen any of the Conjuring or Annabelle movies. Psyching myself up to watch "The Ring" was like a mountain climb. I LOVED it, but - dammit I am such a scaredycat about those.

Yeah, The Witch is very well worth it but a large part of what makes it effective is that it's psychological horror more than only brutality. You are probably going to want subtitles because having the cast speaking in 17th century English style is great from the sense that it already makes what you are watching seem strange but it's difficult at times to follow.

The Redlettermedia boys overhype it. It's a good movie, but it's not great. I think it's one of those things where the accomplishment, with authentic looking and sounding characters, playing this out in isolation, was a commendable endeavor. The story though... meh. It's alright.

Yeah, The Witch is very well worth it but a large part of what makes it effective is that it's psychological horror more than only brutality. You are probably going to want subtitles because having the cast speaking in 17th century English style is great from the sense that it already makes what you are watching seem strange but it's difficult at times to follow.

Someone released a secret recording earlier this year of He Who Must Not Be Named talking in a calm voice on a railroad car. (Secret in that it was recorded without his knowledge).
It's the only known recording of him in a normal speaking voice, not giving one of his shouty speeches.
He sounds like a normal guy with a heavy Austrian accent.

About the Navy ships--if both DDs were operating autonomously with no bridge personnel then a hacked guidance system would make some sense.

I just researched the reports at the time and it was investigated and claimed that the Soviets dropped various mines disguised as radios, pens, match boxes and toys. The winged mines they dropped did in fact resemble toys.
Regardless , there were lots of mines and a lot of children amputees. War is vicious .

Of course it's a shame that yet another big, unique, mostly wonderful American institution is being sullied and trashed by racist mobs and idiocy. But considering the far more important things like rule of law, the constitution, and history lie partially in ruins at the hands of the same mobs, hard to get too worked up.

My kraut is rusty, rustier than my russki. But I'm watching lots of WWII movies/documentaries to revive them - comparatively painless way to do it, given my interests.
Only non-WWII thing I've seen in this "project" was an interesting little movie set in Nagorno-Karabakh (Azeri-Armenian war) just before the Soviet collapse. And even *that* ended up being part-WWII - an Azeri old man who is killed by the Russian-backed Armenian force was a WWII vet/hero, and the Russian protagonist reads the guy's WWII diary/memoir which become the basis for flashback scenes. Very well done.

Well...I would say what makes it effective is that we, as modern folk, want it to be psychological. When in the "reality" of the movie, it is straight up the Witch and Satan at work.
We are even shown the Witch and what happens after the triggering event. Yet, people want to see this as a psychological image.
Each family member has a weakness and they are worked upon until they fall under Satan's spell or are killed or both.
That's what makes the final reveal so powerful and the ending so impressive- it is a straight up dive into the irrational and satanic.
Some SJW-oriented clowns want to see this as a moment of feminist empowerment.
It's not. It is a moment of Satanic triumph. The victim thoroughly mesmerized gladly embraces damnation.
Very neat story-telling.
The "Witches of Eastwick" is a similar storyline and climax where the Progtards totally failed to understand damnation and mistook it for feminist liberation.
