Quotes of The Day

Quote I

It's the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter. Marlene Dietrich

Quote II

Equality, rightly understood as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences; wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism. Barry Goldwater

Quote III

The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities. Ayn Rand

Did you enjoy today's solar eclipse? RACIST

The Atlantic’s very lengthy essay on the failure of the eclipse to occur where a sufficient number of black people reside is entitled “American Blackout.” It clocks in at a remarkable 4,544 words and does not appear to be satire.

Concerning “the Great American Eclipse,” Brooklyn Law School professor Alice Ristroph writes in the rapidly deteriorating magazine, “there live almost no black people” “along most of its path.”

The Atlantic’s longwinded law professor assures readers that “implicit bias of the solar system” is “presumably” not the cause of eclipse’s failure to affect enough black people.

“Still, an eclipse chaser is always tempted to believe that the skies are relaying a message.”

Dammit!!!! Not so fast. 2016 may not the hottest year in history.

After record heat in the first quarter of 2016, something interesting began occurring, not reported in the press. Temperatures trended downwards sharply in the months of April, May and June of 2016. And most importantly the sharp downward trend contradicted the more typical tendency (at least for 2013, 2014, and 2015) to show no particular trend. The last six months on 2016 showed some above-average warming, but of a seasonal nature.

Please wake us up when somebody on a US campus grows a pair of balls.

A fraternity at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor canceled a Nile River-themed welcome party after being condemned by fellow students for "appropriating Egyptian culture."

Slime balls gotta slime........Does the name Dr. Jonathan Gruber ring a bell?Obamacare proponent.

Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan said his office has concluded an investigation into the invoices and billing practices of Dr. Jonathan Gruber, an economic consultant who contracted with the state to provide policy expertise, research and economic modeling for Vermont’s abandoned single-payer healthcare system.

Former Gov. Peter Shumlin sought to create the single-payer system, known as Green Mountain Care, but eventually walked away from the plan after determining it would cost too much. The attorney general’s office’s began the investigation into Gruber’s billing after receiving a referral by State Auditor Doug Hoffer.

Funny thing. If you or I tried that we would be facing how many felonies? They do take care of their own.

It is about time that the Left begin taking down other racist statues and art work.

As long as the Left is determined to tear down historic symbols of racism, I say we help them out and point them toward some statues and portraits of real racist scumbags. The country has any number of former Democrat racist “worthies” that will fit the bill quite nicely.

A hat tip here to the actor James Woods for suggesting that we tear down a statue of the late Democratic Senator Robert Byrd. Seems to me that Byrd, who was once an “Exalted Cyclops” in the Ku Klux Klan (a position that the reviled Robert E. Lee never dreamed of holding) is a prime candidate for black racists to scrub from history. Byrd, the so-called “Conscience of the Senate” once filibustered for 14 hours against civil rights for blacks. Why aren’t blacks demanding that statues honoring him be removed?

The building trades have a shortage of workers.

Whether it was due to pervasive drug abuse, or for some other reason, but fast forward two weeks when in response to a special question in the July NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) survey, US homebuilders said that labor and subcontractor shortages have become even more widespread in July of 2017 than they were in June of 2016.

This is a concern as the inventory of for-sale homes recently struck a 20-year low. And while economists and the public cry for more inventory, many builders are pressed to meet demand. A labor and subcontractor shortage in the building industry has worsened over the past year, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index survey of single-family builders.

Part of the problem is that kids are pushed into college/university rather than trade schools. Trade school programs continue to be dumped by the public school system.

The world continues to need tradesmen. That men's feminist degree isn't going to be handy when someone needs a HVAC tech.

The love of money is the root of all evil.German engineering firm to deal with Iran.

Gaby B. Hanna, vice-president and regional head of MAN Diesel & Turbo – which produces diesel engines for marine and land use on a mass scale – described Iran as “the biggest growth market for us.”

“We are very active in Iran. We’ve restarted our company there, called MAN Iran Power,” Hanna said. “We see Iran, putting aside all the political issues, as a big market for us.”

More dire than Global Warming? Fatbergs!

First, someone might pour molten turkey fat down a drain. A few blocks away, someone else might flush a wet wipe down a toilet. When the two meet in a dank sewer pipe, a baby fatberg is born.

Eventually, more fat, oil, and grease congeal onto the mess and build up into giant stinking globs. When they get big enough, fatbergs can clog sewers entirely, sending raw sewage gushing into streets. By the time a 15-ton monstrosity was pulled from the sewers of London’s Kingston borough in 2013, many of the neighborhood’s toilets had backed up.

Fatbergs are a sewer scourge, and both the nasty blobs and the fights against them have been growing. London, Belfast, Denver, and Melbourne are just a few of the world metropolises that have discovered large fatbergs in recent years.

The ONT Musical Interlude

August 21, 1961, Patsy Cline recorded the classic Willie Nelson song, ‘Crazy’. Cline was still on crutches after going through a car windshield in a head-on collision two months earlier and had difficulty reaching the high notes of the song at first due to her broken ribs. 'Crazy' spent 21 weeks on the chart and eventually became one of her signature tunes. via thisdayinmusic.com

I guess we were lucky. Moochelle wasn't a violent First Lady. Grace Mugabe is a hands on First Lady.

The First Lady of Zimbabwe has been granted diplomatic immunity after claims she beat up a young model in South Africa.
There were widespread calls for Grace Mugabe to be prosecuted after she was accused of assaulting 20-year-old Gabriella Engels in a luxury Johannesburg hotel.
Engels claimed Mrs Mugabe attacked her on August 13, whipping her with an extension cord that cut her forehead and drew blood. The model also posted photos of her injuries on social media.

The ONT wonders if she messes around with school lunch programs.

Spending money like there is no tomorrow, Maine's technology push is a bust.

The Maine Learning Technology Initiative was one of the earliest and largest efforts to bridge that divide. Starting in 2002, it provided a laptop to every seventh and eighth grade student in Maine. It now distributes about 66,000 devices annually, including some to teachers, at a total cost of about $11.5 million per year.
But that investment hasn’t provided clear returns. According to NPR, the state’s standardized test scores have not increased in the 15 years since the program started, and state leadership is beginning to reconsider the initiative.

If spending money on the Head Start program doesn't work why would this? Let's throw others money down the drain so we feel good about ourselves. To hell with the results. Intentions are what matter.

Steve Bannon, on the verge of starting his own network?

From Axios:
Unshaven and working from home in cargo shorts as he moves into "Bannon the Barbarian" mode, Steve Bannon is thinking bigger than Breitbart.

Axios' Jonathan Swan hears Bannon has told friends he sees a massive opening to the right of Fox News, raising the possibility that he's going to start a network.

So, keeping up with the Jones' lottery winners is a dangerous proposition. The danger of lottery winners as neighbors.

The idea makes sense – but there's a downside to living near a lottery winner. Neighbors of lottery winners are significantly more likely to declare bankruptcy within a few years of the big event than are people living near ordinary folks, according to a 2016 study. The study focused on lottery winners in Canada, and found that every $1,000 increase in lottery winnings raises the risk of bankruptcy among the neighbors by roughly 2.4 percent

The ShitsonianSmithsonian, Once again on the wrong side of history.

A new display is going in at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall.

According to representatives from the museum, controversial and unemployed NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will get his own display inside the museum. The display will honor Kaepernick, who has yet to find a home on an NFL team this season after a series of deeply controversial statements and actions, in a new display about Black Lives Matter.

Curators at the museum have asked for artifacts from Kaepernick's infamous kneeling demonstrations during the national anthem last season.

I wish they would just come out and admit, it's not the color it's the philosophy that matters.

Left-wing protesters and shame.

The counter-protests stayed mostly peaceful with only 27 people getting arrested, Evans said. Some counter-protesters shouted “shame” at those at the free speech rally and one elderly lady got knocked over by activists when some of them snatched an American flag out of her hands.

They wouldn't know shame if it jumped up and punched them in the genitals.

Free speech doesn't include hurling bodily waste or stealing some one's property.

It was bad enough you caused Daddy to drink. Now you are causing the homosexuals to drink.

“Alcohol has played a central role for SGM by facilitating exploration of sexuality and gender, coping with minority stress, trauma, and stigma and serving as an integral component of bars and clubs for SGM young adults,” the grant states. “Given this central role, it is not surprising that problematic alcohol use, including heavy episodic drinking (HED) and intoxication, and alcohol-related problems are significant issues for SGM young adults.”
The bottom line theory is that gays, lesbians and transgendered do not have any responsibility for drinking or getting drunk. Instead blame society and others, hence they do nothing wrong. This is really about people refusing to take responsibility for their own actions. Like the Pelosi’s of the world blaming the NRA for gun violence, instead of asking why hundreds, mostly blacks killed by blacks, are being murdered in Chicago each year.

The Iowa Welcome Wagon is about to be visited by Kamala Harris (D-CA).

Former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told MSNBC's Hugh Hewitt Sunday that he's not worried Harris will be his primary competition in the 2018 California gubernatorial race because she's ramping up her operation in the early primary states, and plans to be knocking doors in Iowa sometime early next year:

I took two days off for this eclipse thing. What a waste.

Mexicans hate white people

The construction industry deserves to suck it for a while for purposely hiring Mexicans cheaper than anyone else will work for

Posted by: original jake at August 21, 2017 10:37 PM (NBNBl)

True. There's no such thing as a shortage of labor, only a shortage of labor willing to work for the wage that is being paid. Raise wages and see the labor come out of the woodwork. Start enforcing immigration laws and see people come off the dole. Especially 40- and 50-year old one swho have been "disabled" since about 2009-10 or so, when their unemployment ran out.

a deep shade of blue
is always there

baby

emptiness
is a place you're in
with nothing to lose
but no more to win

the sun ain't gonna shine anymore
the moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
the tears are always clouding your eyes
when you're without love

lonely
without you baby
girl I need you
I can't go on

I'm not saying that Trump is gaming us; I'm saying that in many cases, that Trump is gaming the Democrats and the MSM by what he seems to say.

My suspicion is that although there have been bumps in the road, Trump has a 4d chess model that he's working on that we can't imagine.

Also... I don't know of any other president that has been treated as badly as he has by the MSM, RINOs, Democrats and the Americans who did not vote for him. If, by some strange twist of fate, Jeb/Rubio/Cruz were elected President, I think all of them would have resigned by now.

215 I wonder if the current obsession with this year is the hottest year in history (by which they mean the temperature record, not earths, or even human, and only if you apply adjustments which make the past 2 degrees colder than the present vs the actual measures we've actually made) would wane if we pointed out how human centric their observations actually are. I mean, personally, I want the world's temperatures to be ideal for humanity, whatever that ideal actually is, but for them, wouldn't it be a tremendous black mark to favor a time when the temperatures favored man? I mean, there were definitely warmer centuries. There were times we didn't for the most part even have ice caps. There was also a time when Chicago and Detroit were both under a mile or so of ice. (known as the time of great awesomeness when the northern blight centuries were too cold to live, well okay, before they existed, but still.) But they're human centric. Rather, if the right doesn't want to do anything about climate change, a better way of putting it is that the right doesn't want to change the climate. The left on the other hand envisions giant artificial trees, adding vast amounts of particulate matter to the atmosphere, painting the poles. All in an attempt to PREVENT THE CLIMATE FROM EVER CHANGING. They point to us like monsters, but they want to take on untried geoengineering projects that would cost half the wealth of humanity on flawed information.

Anyway. Point out to the libs their human-centerism. They'll hate you for it. At least, the ones who really CARE about global warming will.

Yay! Subfloor is rotten but maybe the joists are OK!

I suspect a leak in the drain has been the culprit here, hurried along by a washing-machine flood.

If you ever have to get a linoleum floor up in a hurry and don't worry about the first level of floor, use a skill saw set a less than 3/4" and a hefty shovel to pry with.

Had that puppy down to the sub-floor and the debris in the dumpster in 30 minutes.

301 @ Peaches. Break out a map, and look up the Broad Ripple suburb of Indianapolis.

Firstly. It's a quaint, twee little restaurantville. Very scenic, eclectic, fulla good eateries n' breweries.

And, the home-base of one Tamara Keel, shooter, student-of-great-trainers and proficient and prolific gunwriter.

So much so, that she's the Handgun Editor for the NRA monthly "Shooting Illustrated", and contributor to several others.

Not too shabby for a girl in retail gun sales, who started a blog a dozen or so years back.

Get settled in, and I'll make some calls to some people who know some people. You'll soon be training with some of the very best.

I'm working a similar "intro" for an 'ette to train with some pros up in the Detroit area, and am just waiting for one of 'em to return from his latest, and final deployment.

Between all of us "shooters" here at Ace, I think we can connect damn near any one, damn near any where, with quality instruction, training and practice.

And speaking for the shooters, I would say that we're all damned happy to do so, withal.

Check out this author on the internet:
Information about Ristroph (the author of the Atlantic article about the path (????) of the eclipse today) is
particularly hilarious reading.

Check out the reviews posted by her students at http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1227525

One needs to read carefully between the lines to comprehend just how vicious is the stuff from students.

Interesting to compare the student's views with the long list of "credentials" put forth by her employers:
https://www.brooklaw.edu/faculty/directory/facultymember/biography?id=alice.ristroph

It is these "law schools" who deliberately sell these "Professors" to students, at a very high prices. It seems that the students' don't feel they got their money's worth.

More's the pity.

Depends on how they are going to distribute it.

If they go the route of shopping networks and religious channels and PAY the cablecos/satellitepros to carry the station, they will get 100% coverage.

If they go the route of just offering it to cablecos/satellitepros for free, they will get close to universal carriage.

If they go the route of wanting X$ per subscriber like FNC, MSNBC, and CNN, they will have a very hard time getting carriage.

Or, they can just go the streaming route which HBO, ESPN, and WWE are all doing or planning on doing. Usually that will charge subscribers about $10 a month.

You know, some of these "grooming centers", the Wax 'n' Shine places, do indeed do starfish grooming.

I was, a while back, for pure research and scientific purposes I must assure, trying to get Brazilian and other waxing terminology straight.

They vary in their nomenclature, but if you get what some places call the full "Hollywood Wax", you get that.

Can you imagine the people that have to do that job?

It'd be great if Bubble Girl or some of kbdabear's specimens came in for a touch up, but imagine if Lena Dunham -- or worse -- decided she needed a good gussying up of the nethers.

I was, a while back, for pure research and scientific purposes I must assure, trying to get Brazilian and other waxing terminology straight.

Can you imagine the people that have to do that job?

376 Perhaps Bannon should look into developing a news network with the Sinclair TV stations.
Posted by: Captain Whitebread at August 22, 2017 12:01 AM (rJUlF)

Best bet is to go with a streaming service at the beginning. Easier to set up, don't have to drop a lot of coin on satellite transponder space and uplink services, and can put the studios wherever they want to (cheap rent). They can then contract with BAMTech (MLB's streaming company) to run the streaming technology.

Sinclair stations are pretty much full up on what they can carry on their local stations. They have whatever national network the local station is an affiliate of on their main signal, and then on their subsignals they have American Sports Network and CometTV that they own.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of 173 TV stations, and well on it's way to being the largest TV station operator in the USA. Their news reporting leans conservative, and they also produce "Full Measure", a syndicated Sunday news program hosted by Sharyl Atkisson, one of the last real TV journalists left.

Sinclair also runs three multicast networks (Comet, Charge! and TBD). Maybe a digital subchannel news network with Bannon -- free and over the air -- might be an appealing idea for the Sinclair owners.

We have a Sinclair station in our market, and their primary is ABC, and their 2 subchannels are Comet and American Sports Network. It is possible to add a 3rd subchannel, but it would degrade their primary so much that they won't do it.

474 I think young children are very sensitive to certain tastes that just overwhelm everything else. But that abates with age, and you can enjoy stuff that would blow your head off as a child.

So this year I rode to Billings Mo from Wi and thought for sure we'd do a detour through the Black Hills, but it wasn't to be.

It's like Rush back in the 80's. AM radio was dead, all the top stations in most markets were FM music stations, and AM stations were still trying to compete as music stations. Rush came along, and then News/Talk stations took off. People didn't need great sound quality because it was just someone talking.

Streaming is like that. When you watch sports, you want that picture in 720P or 1080i, not 480i (standard definition). Streaming that HD content takes a lot of bandwidth. Streaming a news/talk television station won't need that bandwidth as people will be happy to get it in Standard Definition.

It was telling what drove the movement from SD to HD, it was sports. ESPN was one of the first networks to distribute HD content. Some of the last networks to switch to HD were the news/talk stations like Current and FreeSpeechTV.

Duffel with internal, TSA approved hard cases for various firearms and ammo within, as well as weekend's clothing, shaving kit, bourbon and cigars.

I've flown with much heavier armaments, to a Three Gun Match in Orlando, but that was on Continental United, which is a proven gun-carrier carrier.

Suffice to say, if I make the trip, the duffle will be the most heavily insured item in the cargo hold.

Wow, a question from a cob! That's a first for me!

As to why I do it--because I have a delusional belief that fighting them will somehow contribute to the battle for public opinion. I don't really try to convince *them* exactly, but rather the moderates/LIVs who one of us might be friends with and who happen upon the FB threads. Poor justification, I know, but I can't shake the urge. I suppose it really comes down to not wanting them to have their way all the time on Facebook.

I don't pick fights with them nearly as much as I did a few years ago, though; I just mostly keep them at arm's length and only deal with them if they complain about stuff I've posted directly.

They were always quick to see something that worked for some other tribe or ethnic group, and say, "Hey, that's pretty cool! Let's start doing that!"

Hell, you know what was the first thing they did right after the Trail of Tears, when they were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma? They contacted the federal government and said, "Hey, you know this land we're on now? We want to buy it from you. We know how this works! And they tend to vote Republican! In your typical Presidential election, every precinct in Oklahoma goes red, including the ones in Cherokee and Sequoia Counties.

Appropos of nothing, was reading a combat narrative of the night cruiser action at Guadalcanal (yeah, that stuff can suck me in sometimes), and the USS Portland lost steering control (torpedo damage meant the ship just turned in one direction if had forward speed) - yet managed, while circling to fire on and sink enemy targets. Pretty wild.

I was on a 40-something foot motor yacht, many years ago, and we lost the steering. It was a fairly new boat built in Hong Kong, before it went back to China, but it had cable steering, which was already obsolete. One of the pulley blocks at the side of the transom, the lag screws simply pulled out of the wood.

So here we are motoring round and round in big circles, slowly approaching some rocks, while me and another guy are frantically working in the stern well trying to reattach the block. We were successful but it was a near thing. had to sort of augur starting holes in the wood with a screwdriver, and then crank in the lag screws with a Crescent wrench.

If those Navy vessels do not have some means of totally disengaging electronic and mechanical intermediaries, and putting control of the rudder(s) onto a strictly manual basis, they surely should. I realize moving the rudder of a large ship will take a lot of effort, and could only be done slowly by a crew working a large windlass, but it could be done. Which would be a lot better than sitting there with a finger up your ass if the autopilot goes berserk or has been subverted by enemy hacking.

So any legit sources on McCain losing steering? That would be a serious goof. And at a very suspicious time.

One would guess if the bridge loses steering, then call ENG, and shift rudder control to down below.

As to what is down there at the rudders, used to be steering motors and rams that would turn those suckers.

Posted by: Anna Puma (HQCaR) at August 22, 2017 02:50 AM (WjqDo)

662 AOP, final comment of my night, but darn my memory - was actually on a Burke-class not long ago, and may well have asked about manual back-ups (as I recall someone else marveling at the small wheel - automated, I assume fly-by-wire steering). But I don't recall, alas.

A warship certainly should have redundant mechanisms for the essentials, one would think. In the aforementioned WWII reading I was just doing, several of the damaged ships shifted steering control to the rear, and also had back-up/alternative bridges (in effect). Came in handy when 6- 8- and 14-inch shells are rearranging your ship.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 22, 2017 02:51 AM (fZlu3)

663 Further to my previous post, there's another way steering could be divorced from a compromised auto-pilot. Use accumulators, such as are used to operate the blowout preventers on oil rigs. They use high-pressure nitrogen cylinders to work actuators that close the various rams and/or the annular "bag". It is a completely independent system, and needs no electrical power or mechanical energy from the rig motors, which would get shut down ASAP in the event of an anticipated blowout.

You could use such accumulators on a ship. Have their actuators connected directly to the rudder pivot, and so designed that, idle, they present little drag. The autopilot and normal assisted steering could be coupled to that with a flange using explosive bolts, and the engine room Chief entrusted with a battery box to connect to them to sever the connection.

AOP. of course they should. As part of damage control, if nothing else. I recall loss of rudder control on one of the more famous plane crashes led to the installation of backup manual systems on all commercial aircraft. The hydraulic lines got cut somehow iirc.

As the military becomes more electronics dependent for operations, things will only get worse. Take our newest aircraft carrier, where they have eliminated the steam catapult system. Progress, or folly?

The electromagnetic catapult means more launches, with less time between, with higher ordinance loads than anyone else in the world can manage, especially since they're stuck with their stupid ski jumps.

If it works like it's supposed to, it'll mean we're still decades ahead of everyone else.

That kind of thing isn't the problem, it's hardware that should work as long as you keep it charged from the reactors, and its controls shouldn't be any more susceptible to fucking with 'em than the reactors themselves.

The problem is with stuff like GPS navigation. There's been articles recently about Russia developing GPS spoofing technology. It wouldn't surprise me if China has also, and isn't using it to tell our ships that there's nothing nearby, and commercial ships that there's nothing but open water where our boats are.

I didn't recall the "kinds of" being in the verse. The interlinear indicates that was added, and is not in the KJV.

This short view had some thoughts.
What stood out to me was that money (didn't exist for the earliest evils) stands for having something that entitles you to buy/take what your neighbor has ... which fits with the keeping up with the Jones's thing.

It also fits with how the coastal elites have enriched themselves on 300:1 leveraged monetary power, underwritten by monetary policy and bailouts. Then they imported their foreign domestic labor (slaves) and scold us deplorables for not loving their corruption of our heritage, developed by men who fought for it.

"In Dec 1861 in a London weekly, Charles Dickens, strong opponent of slavery, wrote about our war:

"The Northern onslaught upon slavery is no more than a piece of specious humbug disguised to conceal its desire for economic control of the United States."

Karl Marx, like most European socialists of the time favored the North. ... he articulated what the major British newspapers, the Times, the Economist, and Saturday Review, had been saying:

"The war between the North and South is a tariff war. The war, is further, not for any principle, does not touch the question of slavery, and in fact turns on the Northern lust for power."

the slave owners had political clout, but Robt E Lee was against slavery, yet also against a war that would destroy so much of his local heritage, for what he must have known was a war not really about slavery.

Slavery could have been allowed to die out slowly as it already was, and it might be that even the blacks as a whole would have been better off. Many died after the war ... being shunned/encamped by the union army after the war.

But the North sought power. A historian could maybe put together a good argument for how the deal made for states to retain all (sovereign?) powers not expressly given to the federal power (in the constitution) ... that deal was broken by Lincoln and we've been on a federal power trip ever since. (and they are still trippin', for fascist like control)
