If you don't have eclipse glasses, a #14 welder's faceplate is perfectly safe for viewing the Sun. A #12 can be used if the Sun is closer to the horizon or if the sky is hazy. They're both so dark that the Sun is just about the only thing you can see through them.
I have one of each and I'm sure I paid less than $10 apiece for them, but that was years ago. They're probably not much more than that today. You can buy them at any welder's supply store.

In the umbra, it will get pretty dark, but not as dark as night. You can see stars.
It's an accident of the epoch in which we live that (at times during the moon's orbit when it lines up) that the Moon is the same angular diameter as the Sun in the sky.
The means that at the peak, you can see the Suns' corona. This makes an erie light compared to normal sunlight.
The temperature will drop a little, and the wind can pick up a little -- this is the effect of the sudden relative cold spot in the umbra.
All of that can be cool to see.
But when you've got a bunch of idiots going bat shit like a bunch of primitives, it gets annoying.

I hope you're talking about a partial eclipse. Yes, those are not spectacular to witness. The Sun just gets a bite taken out of it and it is only slightly dimmer than normal.

There was a partial eclipse in the area where I was a kid. Never bothered to look, but you could tell the light was 'wrong'.
A total eclipse would be spooky if you didn't know what it was.
There was a SciFi story many years ago where the fictional planet had three suns (not Vin Diesel in Pitch Black) and one day in every thousand years, the suns lined up and half the planet had no sun in the sky.
Everyone went nuts. Of course, this can't happen here. We're educated people with a long history of solar eclipse es. So I'm not worried.

He meant that Carson would have comedians on The Tonight Show, but that Carson would try to top them while interviewing them. My Grandpa lied to get into the Navy at 16. Wound up on the USS San Francisco. Was at Pearl Harbor and some of the nasty battles with the Japanese. He LOVED the Navy since they gave him a home and steady meals after his had father killed himself due to the depression. This same father had planned to kill him and then himself in a murder suicide, but my Grandfather escaped.
We have had it so good for so long we no longer know what true hardship is.

Waxing and Waning crescents are just in between those peaks.

It certainly is one of the best of all time. Was always intrigued by the notion of trying to make a movie of it, but it was always going to be difficult to adapt it for the big screen.

At one point it was dragging me out to deeper water while I was in the OBGYN chair position.
That was when I spotted a medium sized eel looking for a place to hide.
I instantly had images of my trying to explain to doctors at the hospital how an eel chomped on my nuts or wound up in my butt.
This spurred me to slam my hand down to the floor and hold onto a rock for dear life until the current stopped pulling and I could get out of the water.

My Dad had a totally different experience in the Navy.
He went in in 1942 and had his ship knocked out from under him off the Philippines.

They were very cool. The sky looked almost like twilight, I could see crescents in the leaves of trees, and the temperature dropped noticeably. The upcoming one will only be about 80% from where I am, but of course I will be watching.
I should have made plans for this one a year or two ago, before the hotels got booked up. But I'm lazy and dislike traveling.
It so happens that I am caring for a very sick cat right now, and honest to God, even if I had reservations I would have to break them. I don't think I could enjoy the two minutes of totality knowing that my beloved Kira was hundreds of miles away.

My father has a book that shows a lot of the damage they suffered while he was serving. He had PTSD way before they knew what it was.
From what I have read Navy ships could easily become floating slaughter houses.

FWIW, my dad had a cushy shipyard job with immunity from the draft, but with experience in the Merchants, Coast and Geodetic Survey, and marine salvage, he figured he could be an asset, so he was a USNR volunteer for the duration, and sailed all over the PAC!

As a result, he actually joined the Army in July 1941, BEFORE there was a draft, just to get away from the copper smelting plant. He said, "Everyone knew a draft was coming, and I figured if I joined ahead of time, I would have a better gig in the Army," which turned out to be true, to a certain extent.
To him, entering the Army was the biggest relief imaginable, a huge upgrade in employment status.
Because he had joined early, though, he was one of the very very first American troops shipped out to WWII, on the first convoy that landed at Casablanca sometime in early 1942.

Hardly anything. She's mostly lost interest in eating, and she's lost a lot of weight in the past two months. She has chronic kidney disease.
For the past couple of nights I took her to the vet where she got an injection of fluids and was force fed with a syringe. We'll do that again on Sunday, and then on Monday they'll do another blood test to see if there has been any improvement. If not, well... I guess that's about it.

One tale he told was that upon reporting to his ship in Pearl, the XO told him he'd be hot bunking until they repaired the torpedo damage where his assigned cabin had been. This was essentially later verified by my brother, who got access to the shipyard repair drawings and sure enough they showed just such a repair.
My uncle was in the Merchants on the Murmansk run.

Forgive a stupid question, but what's the difference
between a lunar eclipse the phases of the moon? Aren't they both
the Earth's shadow falling on the Moon?

The phases happen because the moon moves around the earth monthly (or there-abouts) and the bright parts are those facing the sun while we look at it from the resulting angles. (A galaxy model with a light bulb in the middle makes it easier to visualize.)
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow runs across the moon. This does not happen every month because the moon's orbit is not lined up with the Earth's obit around the sun. The resulting angles and the timing of orbits determine the occurrence of lunar eclipses.

You bring up a good point. I have gone to "events" dedicated for singles in the past. I've gotten a few dates. But the way they handled things was crap ("clickmixers" - AVOID). They were always overbooked. There was literally no room to move. I should re-research the options - good idea. Thank you.

That's a good description.
With the phases of the moon, the sunlit portion is still bright.
In a lunar eclipse, the full moon passes through Earth's shadow and the whole thing is darkened. Usually it takes on a dark coppery red color, but I remember one in the 1990s after a big volcano eruption, where the dust in the atmosphere dimmed it to a dark gray so that it was barely visible to the naked eye in mid-eclipse.

Terrible job. Only thing I've heard like that lately is the workers who had to collect body parts from the WTC. I had a steelworker patient who was truly traumatized by it, told me about putting legs in one pile arms in another, etc. Had to be ghastly to do

Dad was in college during WWII. Upon completing 3 years, he was eligible for the Navy officer program. Ended up a Tin Can sailor on the Laffey (DD 724) in 45.
He was a gunnery officer the day they got hit by 6 kamikazes and 4 bombs during 22 attacks while on radar picket duty off Okinawa in April 45.
The got towed to the anchorage of Okinawa and repaired for 6 days before heading to Saipan. More repairs, the off to Pearl and more patching up before heading to the shipyard in Seattle.
Dad was transferred to shore duty while at Saipan for the remainder of the war.
After the war, he returned to his small town Ohio college. Things were more...interesting. Many combat vets with broken GAF meters it seems, so much stupidity, as he recalled to me. Heh.
Mom has some kamikaze parts in his decoration shadowbox.
