Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Media Criticizes General Mattis for Telling Navy Sailors That Their Jobs Are Worth It, Because At Least They Know They're Not "Pussies"Oh, dear. Our priestly caste of wan pencil-scratchers is once again a-tremble with the ecstasy of outrage. I'm sure they're just trying to protect these sailors from #Triggering #Harm -- I'm sure these sailors have never heard such salty language!"You will have some of the best days of your life and some of the worst days of your life in the U.S. Navy, you know what I mean?" Mattis told sailors at Naval Base Kitsap, Washington, according to the official transcript. "That means you're living." "That means you're not some pussy sitting on the sidelines, you know what I mean, kind of sitting there saying, ‘Well, I should have done something with my life,'" he continued.Note this about that last sissy criticism: This comes from the same media that exalts itself as Truth Warriors elevated above every other walk of life in America. Their objection isn't actually that Mattis suggested that one occupation is more elevated than another -- it's that he said the wrong occupation is the Most Exalted. Everyone knows the media are the moast specialist people -- just read any magazine or watch any tv show! You'll see! Open thread. Don't forget, this stupid eclipse is on Monday, and I've decided okay, well, if it just happens once every 40 years or whatever, I guess I'll go look at it. But it's hard to find eclipse glasses now, so if you're interested, start scrambling! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I saw an eclipse when I was a student at U of I. The most striking thing was a discovery. You know how when you stand under a tree on an idyllic quad, and little dapples of light surround you? Well, those dapples are not just beams of light that have found their way through the branches. They are actually PINHOLE CAMERA IMAGES OF THE SUN! So during an eclipse, all those little dots under your average tree will change shape to mimic what's happening above. Something I'd never imagined.

If you don't have eclipse glasses, a #14 welder's faceplate is perfectly safe for viewing the Sun. A #12 can be used if the Sun is closer to the horizon or if the sky is hazy. They're both so dark that the Sun is just about the only thing you can see through them. I have one of each and I'm sure I paid less than $10 apiece for them, but that was years ago. They're probably not much more than that today. You can buy them at any welder's supply store. Posted by: rickl at August 18, 2017 08:45 PM (sdi6R) 106

Business is indeed good for the commie left when they jazz up their mobs with the drug of hate, and turn on the strobe light on the agitprop dance floor. Orwell explained that ecstasy of outrage/hate. There are, I shit you not, official public service announcements here in the Scum Scamfrisco Bay Area telling people to shut down major electrical appliances and the like before and during the eclipse. I assume that this is because Commiefornia is now so sunken to the gunwales with aggressively mandated and heavily subsidized solar power that even a partial eclipse during daylight hours may destabilize the state grid. In the umbra, it will get pretty dark, but not as dark as night. You can see stars. It's an accident of the epoch in which we live that (at times during the moon's orbit when it lines up) that the Moon is the same angular diameter as the Sun in the sky. The means that at the peak, you can see the Suns' corona. This makes an erie light compared to normal sunlight. The temperature will drop a little, and the wind can pick up a little -- this is the effect of the sudden relative cold spot in the umbra. All of that can be cool to see. But when you've got a bunch of idiots going bat shit like a bunch of primitives, it gets annoying. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at August 18, 2017 08:54 PM (8O3HH) 173

You want to have some fun with women's behavior. They can get downright territorial. Let some hottie come in, dressed up, the sluttier the better. Watch how the other women behave. Now, to have fun, put on a show of acting all discombobulated by the hottie. Get a silly grin on your face and act tongue-tied. The other women will get defensive. They can even literally try to block you. Get in between you and the hottie. It's just natural female behavior. Oh, and if they find out you were doing it on purpose just for fun, your ass is grass. There was a partial eclipse in the area where I was a kid. Never bothered to look, but you could tell the light was 'wrong'. A total eclipse would be spooky if you didn't know what it was. There was a SciFi story many years ago where the fictional planet had three suns (not Vin Diesel in Pitch Black) and one day in every thousand years, the suns lined up and half the planet had no sun in the sky. Everyone went nuts. Of course, this can't happen here. We're educated people with a long history of solar eclipse es. So I'm not worried. Some comic, I think it was Cheech Marin, said that Johnnie Carson was a cockblocker. He meant that Carson would have comedians on The Tonight Show, but that Carson would try to top them while interviewing them. I have been IN the sea and it kicked my a**.
At one point it was dragging me out to deeper water while I was in the OBGYN chair position. That was when I spotted a medium sized eel looking for a place to hide. I instantly had images of my trying to explain to doctors at the hospital how an eel chomped on my nuts or wound up in my butt. This spurred me to slam my hand down to the floor and hold onto a rock for dear life until the current stopped pulling and I could get out of the water. I've never seen a total solar eclipse, and of course I would like to. I've seen two partial eclipses that were around 90%. One was in 1970 and the other was around 1994.
They were very cool. The sky looked almost like twilight, I could see crescents in the leaves of trees, and the temperature dropped noticeably. The upcoming one will only be about 80% from where I am, but of course I will be watching. I should have made plans for this one a year or two ago, before the hotels got booked up. But I'm lazy and dislike traveling. It so happens that I am caring for a very sick cat right now, and honest to God, even if I had reservations I would have to break them. I don't think I could enjoy the two minutes of totality knowing that my beloved Kira was hundreds of miles away. His DI told the platoon that he'd be behind the bleachers just after graduation, in case they wanted to "take up any problems they had with him". My friend had been in trouble (lots), had scrubbed the deck inside the DIs' quonset hut, and saw the DI's photo on his desk - Pacific Fleet lightweight boxing champion, something like that. My [male relative] was working in a copper smelting plant in 1941. His job was to turn out the red-hot 2000-poung copper ingots after they had cooled from molten white-hot down to mere red-hot. All around him were beyond-immense vats of molten copper which were poured into the vast ingot molds, with globules splattering everywhere; if a big one landed on you, it could be instant death. He said it was literally like being in Hell -- he reckoned it was the worst job on Earth. And it paid something like $3/day.
As a result, he actually joined the Army in July 1941, BEFORE there was a draft, just to get away from the copper smelting plant. He said, "Everyone knew a draft was coming, and I figured if I joined ahead of time, I would have a better gig in the Army," which turned out to be true, to a certain extent. To him, entering the Army was the biggest relief imaginable, a huge upgrade in employment status. Because he had joined early, though, he was one of the very very first American troops shipped out to WWII, on the first convoy that landed at Casablanca sometime in early 1942. Tillikum, Arizona Memorial is always crowded. USS Missouri berthed where USS Nevada is also neat to tour but she is modernized to 1980s standards. The museum on Ford Island looks neat, but never got a chance to visit it. If you get on to Hickam, go to PACAF HQ which is the old Hickam Hilton and you will see where the walls are still pocked by cannon and machine gun fire. Tour Hickam and there will be markers at some spots saying things like 'this is where a Japanese fighter crashed.'

1. Actually many of us are higher on the pussy range then the military. It is all relative. One person is more pussy than an other based on what they do. Military is probably 1 (low pussy levels), while studying for pussy studies is probably 10 (high pussy levels)
2. Probably not the best time to keep annoying the military considering most of these outfits (Washington Post for example) have been advocating for revolution and armed resistance. I don't know what a PUA is, but ,no, most women don't want a narcissistic jerks. They can be very attractive and they specialize in making you feel like the most important person in the world-initially-and then it's like roller coaster . Exhilarating, but if it goes on too long it;s nauseating Narcissists never have enough narcissistic supply so they inexplicably drop you and then come back to see if they can reel you back in again. They are absolutely hopeless if you are sick or in trouble. The sex may be good but if they regard you as someone to use it's not worth. And for what's it worth women narcissists are equally bad. The thing is, narcissism is a complicated construct that includes aspects that can be alternatively adaptive (such as self-sufficiency, individualism, self-regard, confidence, a desire to lead, and ambition) and potentially destructive (such as arrogance, entitlement, vanity, lack of empathy, and a tendency towards interpersonal exploitation and manipulation), with these facets often co-existing in the same person.
^^ This is not original with me, but I don't know where I got it from. Sorry. It just goes to show why narcissist can be engaging and enraging at the same time. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 18, 2017 09:58 PM (iVOAv) 482

With the phases of the moon, the sunlit portion is still bright. In a lunar eclipse, the full moon passes through Earth's shadow and the whole thing is darkened. Usually it takes on a dark coppery red color, but I remember one in the 1990s after a big volcano eruption, where the dust in the atmosphere dimmed it to a dark gray so that it was barely visible to the naked eye in mid-eclipse. And, my condolences on your situation. I sometimes feel like spinning out of control myself, but I'm too old to be able to cause my parents grief.
The treatments are out there. I suspect everything will turn out fine. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at August 18, 2017 10:25 PM (/qEW2) 539

Terrible job. Only thing I've heard like that lately is the workers who had to collect body parts from the WTC. I had a steelworker patient who was truly traumatized by it, told me about putting legs in one pile arms in another, etc. Had to be ghastly to do Posted by: CN at August 18, 2017 10:34 PM (2+tI4) 540

DOT that said "don't drive with your eclipse glasses on". Sadly, there are those who need this kind of guidance. Posted by: BoynSea at August 18, 2017 10:39 PM (Kh5Q4) 541
A lot of Jarheads are gonna be a little chaffed that Mad Dog said the Squids aren't pussies. The only Squids the Devil Dogs respect are the Docs (Corpsman) and the Seabees (Construction Battalion). Gen. Mattis better make amends or the whole flipping dynamics of inter-service rivalry will be all FUBAR. Well he better not say a damn nice thing to the Air Force, that'll be taking things too far!

475 Since we're talking about what our forebears did during WWII...
Dad was in college during WWII. Upon completing 3 years, he was eligible for the Navy officer program. Ended up a Tin Can sailor on the Laffey (DD 724) in 45. He was a gunnery officer the day they got hit by 6 kamikazes and 4 bombs during 22 attacks while on radar picket duty off Okinawa in April 45. The got towed to the anchorage of Okinawa and repaired for 6 days before heading to Saipan. More repairs, the off to Pearl and more patching up before heading to the shipyard in Seattle. Dad was transferred to shore duty while at Saipan for the remainder of the war. After the war, he returned to his small town Ohio college. Things were more...interesting. Many combat vets with broken GAF meters it seems, so much stupidity, as he recalled to me. Heh. Mom has some kamikaze parts in his decoration shadowbox. I wish I'd been there. This was probably at the Bangor sub base versus the Navy shipyard I work at. He's one of my wife's heroes. Yes I married a Marine, and she's fucking amazing.

I thought "pussy" came from "pusillanimous" or "pusillanimity"? The SAT is not doing its job properly.
