1 I wish I didn't fear flying so much. I would someday love to see one of these Fiji huts in person. Sigh.

4 Does anyone know about foxglove? We have a bunch of yellow blossoms. A couple days ago I was on a dirt road deep in the White Mountains and found some purple foxglove growing by the side of the road.

Could a bird have carried it in or is it likely that someone had disposed of yard debris there?

5 We have been getting monsoon moisture that last couple of weeks and it has been lovely to have a break from having to water the baby trees and garden. My garden is two zucchinis and some taters and some flower beds that are self seeding + perennial bulbs and even at that low level it is neglected.

I had some left over organic taters that I didn't eat and they produced a bunch of eyes. I planted them and they grew big and bushy right away but I don't know if they are making any taters. Its loose sandy soil and I cannot feel any taters poking with my fingers. I will dig them up in a few weeks and find out.

When the plants start to flower is when the spuds are supposed to be ready, according to all of my gardening books. Somewhere around 50-60 days after planting. For beets, it's 45 days after planting.

I did the same thing with sweet potatoes, and they have the most gorgeous foliage-it starts out purple, then turns a lovely chartreuse.

Also, did you know you can pick some of the potatoes, and cover the rest up to keep growing? I just learned that, and thought that was a useful tip.

23 On potatoes, if the foliage is growing they are growing potatoes, but could be too deep to feel. For full sized ones, just wait until the leaves start to turn brown, then dig them up, brush off the dirt and set them out in a cool dark spot to dry and cure. You can start digging when they start blooming for smaller new potatoes. Loose sandy soil would make it much easier to dig than our red clay.

We did sweet potatoes a couple of years, and were surprised at how many we got from just a few plants. Those decorative purple potato vines are cool too.

24 It is an off year for my Gravensteins, and the other apples are not putting much out it looks like. I should have lots of plums.

I still don't have tomatoes, so I have stopped watering them so much to see if that will encourage them to ripen. There are a lot of them and they are all white right now. Everything is behind even with the recent 100F weather.

I do have eggplant and melons though, I plan on eating the first cantaloupe this weekend.

25 All I'm picking now is okra. It sure loves the heat. Impatients are still blooming well in the shade, but most of my flower and rose garden is just an overgrown jungle at this point. Read awhile back that potatoes need a cool climate and loose soil for really good growth, whereas sweet potatoes do well in clay and a hot climate. Since local conditions are semi-tropical soil (red clay) and a southern climate, I figure that is why our red potatoes never seem to do very well. I'd like to see how sweet potatoes do, but I don't live with my parents and the garden plot anymore and no one has time to plant or maintain a garden these days.

Wish I could get my Mom to spend as much time and care on the vegetable garden as she does on the flower beds - we'd at least keep it from having five foot weeds as it does now - but that is not going to happen.

37 So, we sticking to gardening here, and "open" topics below?

Just for the heck of it bought seedlings of Japanese eggplant, and Japanese cucumber (1 of each). Eggplants are finally appearing (one was harvested already), but cucumber plant, while healthy and expanding and blooming, has yet to set any fruit.

Second wave tomato plants next to these small veggie plants (yellow pear, and black cherry) are healthy but stunted, I think, by the ficus blocking sun part of the day (fruit is outstanding though). Third wave tomatoes (one early girl and two cherries in 15-gal pots) are going strong.

Off gardening - the "Googlag" slur is of course funny and perfect, except for one thing. The young'ins (most of them), which means most of Google and similar outfits, are completely lacking in historical knowledge. Even of their own, recent history. Not to mention lacking American values (thus their authoritarian tendencies). So this perfect skewer actually becomes an "inside joke" for literate, American-mindset Americans. Just emphasizes the horrible state of affairs.

And for a fuller geekish understanding of the term, the portmanteau "gulag" comes from Main Camps Administration (GLAV-noye uprav-LYEN-iye LAHG-rov). Classically dull Soviet bureaucratese.

Birds of all kinds can 'carry' all kinds of seeds to far away locations. (For example, there's a new blackberry plant under one of our trees-- not planted by my hand, that's for sure!)

It's certainly possible that someone dumped stuff there.

Foxglove seeds are quite tiny, so also could have been blown in by wind or "hitched a ride" on some other object or animal.

44 For those of you who haven't taken a vacation in a very long time, is it mainly finances? Or you job doesn't let you get away? Or you have no desire to travel?

Finances. I (theoretically) can take as much time off as I want - when I was hired my boss told me that flexibility was the only benefit that he could offer - but since I am paid by the hour it is pretty hard to take much time off without running into serious financial difficulties, much less when I have to pay to travel.

I'm taking "vacation" to mean a week or so off and a trip for its own sake - I get time off from Christmas to New Years b/c the boss is away, which is spent with my extended family, and some odd days in which there is no work available which is mostly spent at home trying catch up on housework and projects. I've also taken a Friday off in the spring the last few years to attend the Kentucky rifle show two hours from where I live, which is a small vacation of sorts.

46 Someone asked me if I had divided my hostas yet this year and I don't know what that means. Is that something you do because they've overgrown their space, or is it something that is healthy for the plant? My hostas this year are finally filling in the space along the walkway. Nothing else will really grow there (except ferns) because the angle of the garage and house keep that spot in deep shade from late May on.

It's clear that I know jack about gardening. Should I be doing something to the hostas?

47 Grey Fox, good point about sweet potatoes doing well in the south and other types in the north. Thinking about it - yeah, sweet potatoes are grown commercially in the SE, which is nothing like Idaho.

One tip I tried that worked out well was growing potatoes in loose soil mixtures, mostly compost, straw, mulch, dry leaves, etc. I grew sweet potatoes in large pots in a mix like that one year, and just dumped the pots over to harvest. Easy-peasy!

51 We canned our first batch of tomatoes this morning. These were early girls. This year they have a very tart and sweet taste, very "tomatoey", maybe due to the hot, dry weather the end of May.

We usually plant heirlooms like Gernan Queen, Italian Oxheart, etc for juice. They will be a few weeks yet. Lots of RomaVF and Amish Paste have set. These will go to sauce.

Still need rain..,just a few sprinkles this week.

For potatoes, we have often pulled a few and recovered with soil,to let the plant keep growing, like moki suggested. This works mucH better if you have hilled your potatoes. We dig the main crop any time after the vines turn yellow or die completely.

Hi grammie! Vacation... vacation... hmm.

Been a long time.

Lots of Stay-cations here. Finances aren't really a problem, but that's because we don't live beyond our means... and Vacations are beyond our means.

Time off was only troublesome with certain (not current) employers.

Hubby and I had both moved around a lot as children and young adults, so "travel" pretty much lost its appeal for us long before we even met.

I used to fantasize about traveling "'round the world" --seeing the Seven Wonders and all that-- and sampling All The Yummy Food. Now that I understand the world f'ing hates the US.... forget it.

64 David at Buffalo Roam, I have some melons I am training up a tomato cage, but it isn't going well. Some of the volunteers will have characteristics the hybrids are avoiding like extra leggyness and climbing.

I am growing a volunteer Chamoe (Korean crunchy) melon and it has melon flowers and leaves, but the whole aspect of it is like a squash.

I have said this before, if you are sort of marginal for eggplants, try watering them really hard about once or twice a week. They seem to prefer that.

I also did finally get a compost heap squash this year, no idea what it is but I think it is from a sweetmeat. The leaves are bigger than dinner plates and it is looking very happy. No flowers yet, but the rains put everything behind this year.

68 Too many tomatoes now ... brought in one banana box full and made about 3 gallons of salsa for the freezer. Still have a bunch, this year a bumper crop, some years not many nice ones. I did fence them off and spray a couple times this year, and weeded more.

Watermelons are ready now ... half a melon a day keeps the doctor away. I'm considering making juice and freezing it. I'll have to buy bird netting I guess, if I want to save my grape juice, or make wine.

I do have some flowers patches, but none as clean and pretty as those above. Lots of black-eyed susans in the woods blooming now, and the chicory I've encouraged in spots makes for nice blue patches in the mornings, but close up later in the day.

75 Insomniac you should take a distillery tour of Tennesse, and Kentucky. You could probably get invites to stay with fellow horde members and would only need gas money. You could plan some side trips to various attractions and make it a trip with the kiddos. This is America! vacation does not have to mean flying to Europe and staying at 3+ star hotels.

Yesterday there was a woman just riding around, talking on her phone. Not even shopping. In my way several times.

Two weeks at Costco there was a fat old slob in a straw hat in front of me at the register. There was a large group of obnoxious foreign people in front of us paying for their crap. These people wouldn't stop yapping, sounded like they were all arguing with each other, oblivious to every one else in the world.

The cashier made a face when they finally left and shook her head. The old fat slob on the scooter said, "Well, that's what makes this county great."

I said, "NO, IT DOESN'T."

Fat old slob on the scooter said back to me, "Now, now, let's not say that."

I gave him the Shut The Fuck Up & Fuck You look.

When the fat old slob on the scooter left, the costco cashier said to me, "I'm with you." And we gave each other the Pepe Covfefe secret nod. All true.

121 Bebe, I jokingly urged MisHum to put up a VA festivities thread so as to concentrate the mostly misguided uproar there, for entertainment and bannination shenanigans.

Only demonstration I ever did not carefully completely avoid (per common sense and advice of elder siblings) were the huge anti-Shah marches in DC in 1978 (79?) during the Shah's last visit to Carter. All the fun was on the Mall-side of the WH (thus the tear gas drifting over and affecting Carter and Pahlavi at their podium), the Lafayette Park/city side was calm.

And impressive. The fuzz, I mean. One almost never sees such muscle/power on display in the US. The lines of Park Police reserves in their helmets, with their shields and sticks. Best of all, the huge Park Police horses with the mounted police, with their shields and helmets. Behind them, just behind the WH fence, EPS (uniformed Secret Service) in *their* riot gear, each guy holding one or two beautiful shepherds or Belgian Malois (sp?) on a long leash.

Check out the "Trump administration" thread on the Conservative TreeHouse site and a post near the end of the thread-from "Concerned Virginian" Apparently this was a redo of a rally about a month ago protesting the removal of Confederate statue, but antifa, BLM decided to protest to. I think these "white right" people are racist nuts (I mean David Duke is there?!!!) but it's obviously intended to make it look like all Trump voters are right supremacists and Terry McCauliffe is running with it.

146 Okay, now that I know I can post with Javascript off: here's what's been going on in Idaho's Treasure Valley. I'm grateful that the weather has only been in the mid to high 90's, not over 100, this week. The main problem now is hazy air from distant fires - I haven't smelled smoke very often, but the sky hasn't been blue yet this month.

Husband and I finally seem to be catching up on some tasks. The biggest problem is that our area does not have a "yard waste" cart, so all weeds go into the trash. Our weekly trash is 98% weeds, 2% plastic bag of trash. This limits how many weedy areas we can dig up in a week, unless we want piles of dead weeds sitting around, waiting for their turn.

Husband's been doing a tree pruning project, involving several runs to the dump due to the sheer volume of tree debris. Sycamores, crabapple, oak are done - Tatarian Maples come next.

I finally got done with the strawberry project - bird nets off, remove half or more of the plants, and set up the runners I wanted to let grow.

Still green bean season. The earliest plants are tapering off but the latest-planted ones are ramping up. Very fortunate I have a chest freezer! So far, not counting those we ate fresh, or those we tossed in the compost because they got too large, we've frozen 32 pounds of them. We joke about Zeno's Bean Patch - when you think you've picked all the beans, you've really only got half of them - and if you pick the patch again, you'll only have picked half of the remainder - and so on to infinity...

We've eaten some fresh ears of sweet corn, but haven't frozen any yet; that will start soon. A few zucchini have shown up - the squashes don't seem to like being planted directly in the ground, preferring the cushy soil of the raised beds. The butternut squash has only set 3 or 4 fruits, and the sugar pumpkin is setting fruits but they're smaller by far than last year's.

One tomato is in the ground, the Cherokee Purple heirloom given to me by a friend. And who knows why, but it's quite happy. It's set lots of fat green fruits. We're not sure exactly what color the fruit will turn (purplish, I'm guessing), so I pinch them to see if any are starting to ripen.

Two tomatoes are in 20 gallon cloth pots, with a single dripper each, and they do *not* look happy. The Early Girl's producing a few fruits each week, all sun scalded on the bottom, and all smaller than last year's fruit. The Sungold is producing just a few tomatoes a day, and is not turning into the sort of behemoth that took over parts of 2 raised beds last year before being killed by frost.

The 2 Romas are in a raised bed, and have just barely started producing ripe fruit. I look forward to canning up a bunch of sauce when they hit their stride. The flavor of last year's home-canned sauce was absolutely amazing.

We're watching the cantaloupes for ripeness; we've found about 14 fruits going, so far. We're also watching the red raspberries for signs of when the main crop is going to start. (Tomorrow we'll turn the currently-frozen raspberries into juice for our home-brew, "Raspberry Bathtub Wheat Beer, Take 2" - this will make room for the new crop.)

Husband's experimental poblano pepper plants are huge - so large that branches are collapsing from their own weight. But as long as the leaves don't wither, we're leaving the branches in place to get the peppers ripe.

We also have jalapenos, which we've enjoyed by seeding them, stuffing them with cream cheese, wrapping them in bacon, and grilling them - oh YUM!

I haven't really been checking the bell peppers, though I should - we have 3 red and one orange.

We're not sure what the potatoes in 20 gallon cloth bags are doing. The plant tops seem less happy this year, on drippers, than they were last year under sprayers. We'll have to see what results we get, to decide where to put the bags next year.

I just put in a row of fall carrots this morning. I hope it's not too early, but I do have to get them in soon, because they take 2 months, and if Mother Nature is cranky, our first frost will be in early October (I wish She'd wait until Halloween). I'll put in another row in a week or two. I also have to remember fall radishes, field peas, and spinach - it will be the first time trying the latter two.

Time to go away now, to celebrate my wedding anniversary!

148 If anyone is still following this thread, I tried to post a tip just before heading out the door, but it didn't get posted.

Anyway, since it's tomato season in the Great Midwest, here is a tip I learned by accident several years ago:

To remove green tomato stains from your hands and arms (even legs if you have really gotten into it) DO NOT use detergents or liquid soaps. Use solid bar soap like Lux, Dial, etc.

Try this experiment if you are skeptical: wash well with detergent, rinse and dry. Then wash again with bar soap. You may be amazed at what you missed.

149 Pat -Great report. I have a few suggestions yoj might like to try.

Raspberry syrup: use a raspberry jam recipe but don'use the pectin, or only part of it. Can it like you would any fruit. Great on pancakes.

I assume you don't care for canned green beans. But if you run out of freezer room, and dare to can, stuff the jars as full and tight as possible. This means less water to absorb flavor. Texture: the French filet type beans keep texture better after canning. Always reheat canned beans in the jar liquid, do not drain and add fresh water. Commercial canned beans cannot compete with the flavor of home canned beans.

Roma tomatoes are very susceptible to blossom end rot. DO NOT let the plants go dry. Fresh basil makes a world of diffrence in sauce compared to dry basil.

Happy anniversary! How many years now? My wife and I will hit 43 in January (if I make it that far. But I finally got all my teeth, so I expect things to only get better from here). Here is a picture of my gift to her on our 40th. While we were engaged, I spent an afternoon in the woods with her on her farm carving our names on a big beech tree. The tree is mostly dead now after many lightening strikes, but each strike missed our names.

150 Spun and Murky, thank you for the compliment! Always check back late for my reports, because I do them at the end of the day, most often.

Bergerbilder, thank you for the note. We did in fact can some raspberry syrup, mostly because we didn't use a correct amount of pectin in a jelly recipe, or didn't cook it long enough, or something. But we let it turn into a happy accident, and it is in fact very good on pancakes.

Green beans would need to be pressure-canned, and we haven't tried that yet. We've done water-bath canning, and made our own beer, and made cider from our apples, so far. We still plan to try pressure canning and making hard cider, but they're in the future. (We've become quite the Urban Farmers since we moved to Idaho 3 years ago.)

The Romas get watered every day. Despite the Boise River, we live in high desert country. The sauce recipe we used (from Backwoods Home Magazine) called for a turkey roasting pan, a layer of onions and fresh herbs, lots of top-down cored tomatoes laid over them, roasted low, overnight, then processed. I do grow my own basil and thyme, and this year I also have marjoram, so the sauce should be even better than last year.

It's a mere 38 years married for us. Some days it seems like we just got married yesterday and where did all the years go - some days it seems like we've been married forever and I wonder how we managed it.
