Open Borders Marco's Embrace of Open Borders Without Limit Is the Very Opposite of Conservative Cautiousness

Fred Bauer writes at NRO about Open Borders Marco's call for no limits on immigration, except for market demand:

Caps on legal immigration have been a key component of U.S. immigration policy for generations....

A call for an uncapped immigration system would be a major departure from the norms of American immigration policy after the rise of modern transportation and the welfare state. There might be a further conservative argument on behalf of caps for a modern immigration system: Human limitations mean that sweeping policy efforts can have unforeseen consequences, which can make immigration policy especially tricky. Caps on legal immigration (whatever the criteria for legal immigration) might be viewed as a recognition of that limitation; because we don't
know all the long-term consequences of a given immigration paradigm, we should set limits on the immigration flow of any given year.

...

Immigration is an area where expert predictions have failed spectacularly. For instance, the proponents of the 1965 revision of immigration law did not predict the massive demographic change that their reforms would initiate....

A cap on legal immigration sets an absolute bound to the extent of this government-induced distortion. One of the great tensions between open-borders ideology and conservatism involves the role of moderation. Because of a recognition of the importance of conserving many existing civic institutions, conservatives often promote disruptional buffers to lessen the force of major social shocks, even ones that are well-intended. Caps on legal immigration might act as one such buffer. Open-borders advocates might cheer radical disruption in the pursuit of a borderless utopia, but conservatives remember that utopias are often the graveyards of hopes, good intentions, and prudence.

Don't worry, Open Borders Marco will dissemble about his position the next time he's running for something. (He was just re-elected and therefore feels he can be more honest -- on a temporary time-limited basis.)

92 Unlimited immigration...

Its Story time boys and girls!

When I retired from the Navy, 20 years ago, the average Network Engineer with the premier Microsoft network Certification, made $67 K per year. Demand was high, and many 'Trade' schools were opening to support the demand.

Then, due to the 'shortage' of IT workers, business lobbyists got the government to do the H1B crap....

Those trade schools closed, Americans stopped getting those jobs...

H1Bs have continued... and the Average Network Engineer today? 20 Years Later? Average salary?

$67 K.

So after 20 years of inflation... those jobs are still paid the same amount... keeping up with inflation they should be in the High $90 K range..

THAT is what Economic Immigration does....

I agree in principle this this is also an issue. However, I no longer think the republicans are serious about this since they seem to want to open the doors to people that will not be able to contribute as much as they will be taking, thus in "net" terms making the problem worse not better.

The merit based scheme of immigration has the best logical chance of creating a sustainable inflow of people who can either now or will be able to eventually pay their own way.

I also like the part where dad works, lives in a two bedroom apartment with seven other identical workers, and sends all of his money home for five years before returning, and the job is taken over by another interchangeable illegal as Tommy, Chad, and A-Aron can't figure out how to get their foot in the door after high school.

Or can't figure out why Tommy, Chad, and A-Aron's Drywall and Painting Services that the friends started fresh out of high school can't get much work even though they're bidding so low that they lose money on most jobs but hope they can do it long enough to establish themselves without going under.

168 Rubio thinks half a million is "an arbitrary" restriction.

arbitrary: the quality of being determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle.

Trump's number is not arbitrary, it is based on many things, including the failure of higher numbers to assimilate, higher numbers depressing wages ... several factors.

Rubio puts zero restrictions on his arbitrary no limit plan, other than "demand". Demand to replace American bred workers with foreigners, who are so desperate to escape their narco-state regime they will work cheap, and be obligated to serve their new "boss/master" to remain in the country. And they will send remittances back to their homeland instead of building the community that hires and houses them.

America is not a nation of immigrants ... most were born here and have family that fought for our liberty.

I love it when people accuse you of lying because they are too lazy to go Google it themselves

Here is the article from the New York Times regarding Cruz. Teddy Bear Cruz never denied any of this.

https://tinyurl.com/y8yhft5k

"Asked about what to do with the people here illegally, however, he stressed that he had never tried to undo the goal of allowing them to stay.

"The amendment that I introduced removed the path to citizenship, but it did not change the underlying work permit from the Gang of Eight," he said during a recent visit to El Paso. Mr. Cruz also noted that he had not called for deportation or, as Mitt Romney famously advocated, self-deportation.

Mr. Cruz said recent polling indicated that people outside Washington support some reform, including legal status without citizenship.

Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung when they tried to gain legal entry to this country."

I snarked on twitter about how Alphabet's shareholders should be interested to learn that Google's engineers don't know the difference between the aggregate and the individual.

It occurred to me today that Alphabet and Amazon and tech in general depends on the aggregate in order to make money. Writ large, what tech companies are selling is data. Sure, Amazon ships you physical stuff but even that stuff is based on using data to suggest what you want.

The individual data point exists only to be placed into a set. Those oh so individual recommendations and ads and the like? Yeah, it's just comparing your data point to that set and serving up the appropriate widget from the pool of widgets.

So tech thinking is utterly oriented to eliminating any individuality and putting everything in sets. Which is great for data and horrifying for human beings.

250 How do we fix the attitude of American youths that blue collar trades are beneath them or whatever other reason causes them to avoid learning these trades?

Yeah Immigration is a really obvious problem, like a broken arm? But the cancer that's killing America is the attitude of dependence on government instead of the old can-do approach that built this nation. Instead of viewing problems as opportunities or challenges, people collapse and run away.

America was founded by people who left their nation to find a better life, no matter how tough it was going to be. The people who though that was too haaaaard or scary or couldn't imagine living in any hardship stayed behind and rotted Europe.

Now America is full of that kind of loser and chump. We need to go back to a culture that celebrates achievement, virtue, and work. A culture where people are taught from the cradle to attack problems and welcome hardship as a way to grow and be better, with parents as examples every step of the way. Without that, we're doomed to slouch into Paris and Oslo.

297 Okay I had a thought and thus must inflict it on the Horde also it's over 100 comments so neener on staying on topic.

Posted by: alexthechick - a manatee life for me at August 09, 2017 01:12 PM (mf5HN)

Yup. That's why Amazon is willing to lose money to get you to sign up for Prime. They want to keep you in the Amazon ecosystem and gather all the info about what you buy and when and how much. The data drives them, it's one of their core competencies, as I recall.

But I will say, at least about Amazon, that most of this is focused in doing what is best for the Customer, who is an individual.

*and by 'we' they mean 'people who don't live very close to me'

Some are calculating leftists who think that this means voters for their party, and they can gain power while shutting out those evil white people who won't vote for them.

Some are businessmen and farmers who want cheap labor at any cost.

Some are social engineers that want to change America's culture and demographics, destroying the past.

And of course, there are the folks who are buffet types, picking several of these to combine into a stew of misery, disease, crime, and failure.

The white libs are going to be shocked and horrified to find their New Americans have a somewhat more aggressive demographic/power plan for the future. It does not include any white liberals.

Shame! Shame! Shame!

368 312 My point isn't about race or ethnicity, it's about who supports wide open immigration, legal or illegal. The data is clear that hispanic or whatever you want to call them politicians have an almost unanimous record of support. I report, you decide. Some may be great on other issues, but they have a real soft spot on this.

Of course, if the races or cultures involved were inverted and the same laws applied, those other races and cultures would behave in the same self interested way. It's human nature, and predictable. Like gravitates to like, most of the time. Forced PC nazism isn't going to change human nature. We have to live with it while being nice to others.

The question at hand is how much immigration does our country need, and what should the parameters be? Trump's merit based system would be a tremendous improvement over the mayhem we have now.

369 on one hand, dear native americans (from 1776 onward) get abortions, kids are for squares.

on other hand, dear immigrants "pop those fucking kids out, heeeere's welfare"

370 And of course, there are the folks who are buffet types, picking several of these to combine into a stew of misery, disease, crime, and failure.

371 Late and I was willowed. I'm having a down day. At the end of my rope. I think I'll turn in for a nap. Fuck being disabled, worried, isolated. Life sucks.

372 Don't worry. The arbiters at National Review soon will make the conservative case for open borders and national genocide.

Lil' Rubio either realizes he is at his apex due to the Peter Principle, or he thinks the CoC and K Street still can buy the presidency even though their relevance diminishes daily. What a lil' doofus.

373 Margarita DeVille, there may be many Hispanics whose family goes back "many" generation, but thanks to illegal immigration and certainly since Reagan's amnesty, there are 10x as many more who are here illegally or the offspring on illegals.

It's not everyone else's fault that there's a 90% chance that a Hispanic is illegal or related to illegals -- or for noticing that.

374 "Rubio thinks half a million is "an arbitrary" restriction."

Even if he were right it wouldn't help his case much; it could as easily be too high a figure as too low.

375 251 How do we fix the attitude of American youths that
blue collar trades are beneath them or whatever other reason causes them
to avoid learning these trades?
It concerns me when companies can't find welders or carpenters or
mechanics . I know in Texas you can rarely hire a tiler, sheetrocker,
roofer, etc that's not of questionable legal status. Posted by: Jack Sock at August 09, 2017 01:15 PM (no/Pv)
=====

Public schools are staffed by the college educated who often look down at sneering scorn to anyone who so much as changes their own oil in their car on weekends. This is a major source of your problem. The mission of public school is NOT to teach but is to get your kid to college where the REAL learning will begin. In the meantime (especially true for high school) your kids will be provided a GREAT social environment and will be encouraged to participate in as many athletics and extracurricular activities as possible!
