Eric Cantor: You Know, I Never Believed We Could or Would Repeal Obamacare; But You Gotta Channel That "Anger" in the Public to Advance Your Career

Over at PJ Media's Hot Mic, there's a post about Trump selling out and surrounding himself with Democrats.

Fair enough. But Steven Green points out there's a lot of selling out to Democrats going on, right in the GOP itself.

I notice a certain kind of Republican likes to list Trump heresies while giving a lot of excuses and wiggle room to the sell-outs of the GOP Establishment.

Remember the summer of 2013, when the “Defund Obamacare Tour” drove the news cycle all through Congress’s August recess? The town halls organized by the political arm of the Heritage Foundation enlivened the base and furthered what had been the GOP’s core message since 2010—that Obamacare was bad and, if Americans helped Republicans hold both chambers, it could be repealed.
Cantor helped create that perception. Earlier that summer—after many failed attempts over the years to shred the law piecemeal—Cantor promised colleagues that the House would vote on a “full repeal.” But even after it did, the measure was dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate...
Asked if he feels partly responsible for [the now-in-power GOP Congress'] current predicament, Cantor is unequivocal. “Oh,” he says, “100 percent.”
He goes further: “To give the impression that if Republicans were in control of the House and Senate, that we could do that when Obama was still in office . . . .” His voice trails off and he shakes his head. “I never believed it.”
He says he wasn’t the only one aware of the charade: “We sort of all got what was going on, that there was this disconnect in terms of communication, because no one wanted to take the time out in the general public to even think about ‘Wait a minute—that can’t happen.’ ” But, he adds, “if you’ve got that anger working for you, you’re gonna let it be.”
It’s a stunning admission from a former member of the party leadership—that the linchpin of GOP electoral strategy for the better part of a decade was a fantasy, a flame continually fanned solely because, when it came to midterm elections, it worked.

I don't mind criticisms of Trump from the right -- I mean, criticisms about his deviations from conservative orthodoxy designed to push him more to the right.

However, people like the Weekly Standard's Jonathan V. Last have taken to claiming that the failure of the "conservative" Senate to repeal Obamacare is Trump's fault -- for not persuading them of what they claimed to ardently believed for four election cycles running.

And yet people like him will smugly insist upon his own holy devotion to "principle," while making excuses for #FakeNewsRepublicans' own massive deviations from those same "principles."

There's an awful lot of posturing among some Republican leaders, both in Congress and in messaging institutions -- many of whom are much, much more liberal than the party base -- about being #MoreConservativeThanThou, when in fact they're arguing for a much more liberal Republican party but are continuing with the dishonest game of agitating on behalf of more liberal policy while claiming to be zealously fighting for True Conservative Principles.

Don't believe me? Ask them where they stand on transgenders in the military.

They will attempt to dodge the question by talking up process issues -- "Oh, Trump shouldn't have announced it on Twitter," "Trump should have gotten his people on board," "Trump should have waited for the military's review."

Shut them down on that bullshit -- those are valid points but they're being deployed like aluminum chaff to keep the missile from hitting.

Insist they answer the substantive question of whether or not the military should begin recruiting transgenders.

I'll bet you they continue to offer up procedural diversions even after you tell them you're not interested in an answer about procedure, but are demanding an answer on the core substantive issue.

They're liberals on many, many issues, but like pretending to be TruCons.

Just like their fellow traveler Eric Cantor.

.Nope it's got maybe two years left. Heck it may be gone next year. Aetna has left the entire obamacare market and other Insurers are threatening to pull out if Trump doesn't give them some cash. United Health is down to providing plans in just two States from a high of 34.

Heck 48 Counties have zero Insurers for the 2018 market which starts soon and that number will increase.

In my estimation, Obamacare isn't an entitlement insofar as you don't get a check every month. Instead, your insurance costs skyrocket and your doctor, if you still have one, won't accept it.

Remember the last Libertarian ticket? 2 RINO's Governors that basically just became an anti-Trump Party and would barely raise a finger against ObamaCare.

ObamaCare expanded MediCaid to lots more people (entitlement #1)

It susbidized other people's insurance (mainly older and unhealthy with preexisting conditions)

See, that's the thing. Back in 2010, most of Obamacare wasn't even implemented. The GOP had just the House; Dems had Senate and Obama. But, per the constitution, all funding bills must come from the House. The GOP could have refused to let Obamacare get built and deployed. None of this supposed problem of taking stuff away from people who had gotten used to it. They could have stopped it from ever happening.

Instead, they waited until people were used to getting the goodies, then they say it's too late. They let it get too late.

Even now, they could still get the feds out of much of healthcare even if they leave the medicaid/medicare expansion in place. At least let the rest of it operate like a market. But, they want they feds running the whole thing.

Medicaid is a half-century old program that consumes a bigger budget than most large countries have, and produces almost nothing in results (well, there is an epic amount of fraud, probably more than for anything other than, now, "disability"). And much of the "expansion" is of enrollment of people who ..... were actually eligible before, but didn't know/didn't sign up (oh, yes, it's that ridiculous).

O-care is a tiny program of subsidized, crappy, unpopular insurance policies with limited networks, high deductibles, and prices that are significantly above readily available (now unavailable) plans pre-O-care.

Up to half of the very small number of O-care enrollees (most of whom hate their policies) are actually refugees from pre-O-care policies that were destroyed (mostly in the individual market). So, in other words, they aren't net-new insured, far from it. They're "worse insured". And a group much larger than that one is now without insurance for the first time in their lives due to the cost, or suffering great financial distress from having to pour a mortgage payment down the drain to get policies they had for half the cost of the cable bill, before.

And leaving O-care in place for its tiny tiny little program to crumble will do nothing to relieve the damage to the much, much larger number of people who previously had inexpensive coverage in the individual market.

Yes, THIS is a political landscape where no one dare repeal O-care. WTF?

That last poignant question is answered by the situation of most here, who through their comments reveal they are part of the 85% under group plans via employers, where little has changed. To them O-care is mostly an abstraction, with little current effect on them. So in the blank space they insert baseless but always-trendy bromides and nonsense like "you can't EVER repeal an entitlement!!" and "it was meant to fail, 'single payer' will magically and inexorably follow this collapse!!" etc.

The "august we don't work in europe" holiday. I'm sure every other american who got that email enjoyed it as much as I did.

Today I had another firm tell me that they specifically do not want to do any marketing at all, so they can be under the radar of eveyrone. They also only like to work with people they know. But I could tell them any out of the box ideas I had.

This is the situation I've run across:

I have, except for the 6-figures part (it came out to about $60k/yr). In a Top Secret facility. Unboxed and deployed a hundred $15,000 printers. Took 3 hours to train him. He parlayed it into an apprenticeship at that facility and now makes 5x what I do as a welder with a security clearance.

Many moons ago* back in my Usenet days I asked why this wasn't a thing. Let churches or schools or benevolent societies group together to buy health insurance plans for their members.

I was told it was illegal. I didn't think to ask chapter and verse what prohibited it but IIRC it was a libertarian lawyer who told me this so I believed him. It absolutely blew my mind that it was against the law for a group of people not in a commercial relationship to negotiate for and purchase a group health insurance plan.

'Zactly. Sure as sysadmin I have access to everyone's everything but if I had a single other person's files or emails in MY possession, ie in a folder on my computer or stored on a flash drive, then I would really have to explain how/why or it's automatically assumed I am up to no good.

Just because you have access it doesn't follow you would/should have possession.

A lot of fired-up Trump supporters. Most of the volunteer effort that I was a part of didn't give a crap about anyone than Trump.

The RNC provided the infrastructure, but Trump released his supporter list to the RNC and they got flooded with colunteers.

532 The two big divisions of how we view ourselves in connection to society is either as individualists or as collectivists. The people who seek elected office skew collectivist by an enormous margin, and even individualists who do get elected tend to become more collectivist simply by being in office. Collectivists favor socialist policy. Socialist policy is leftist policy. Leftist policy is basically what they democrats are going for. Thus, it isn't really surprising that most of the elected Republicans are basically not all that different from democrats. Hayak pointed out there were socialists in every party. But I think it is also worth mentioning that as far as the representatives selected by each party, the odds of them being socialists approaches 100%.

Government fundamentally is restrictive. It can't give money without taking it. Law that grants liberty fundamentally doesn't exist. At most, you encounter law which proclaims they won't restrict certain liberties. Liberty itself does not come from the state. Worse is that when the government does nothing, that too is seen as an ill. When doing something is how we evaluate them working, and doing something favors some social good despite the loss to individuals, what else can happen but everyone end up becoming collectivist. Rather, the ones who do seem to fight for liberty are the odd-balls who tend to get elected in only a very few districts.

534 Richard Shelby supports trannies in uniform and then I realized why, he is on the banking committee and all of his donors would crucify him if he opposed trannies in the military. JP Morgan can't give money to a homophobe so boom, Shelby supports trannies. Somebody should run against him in Alabana solely on the tranny issue.
