Eric Cantor: You Know, I Never Believed We Could or Would Repeal Obamacare; But You Gotta Channel That "Anger" in the Public to Advance Your Career

Over at PJ Media's Hot Mic, there's a post about Trump selling out and surrounding himself with Democrats.

Fair enough. But Steven Green points out there's a lot of selling out to Democrats going on, right in the GOP itself.

I notice a certain kind of Republican likes to list Trump heresies while giving a lot of excuses and wiggle room to the sell-outs of the GOP Establishment.

Remember the summer of 2013, when the “Defund Obamacare Tour” drove the news cycle all through Congress’s August recess? The town halls organized by the political arm of the Heritage Foundation enlivened the base and furthered what had been the GOP’s core message since 2010—that Obamacare was bad and, if Americans helped Republicans hold both chambers, it could be repealed.

Cantor helped create that perception. Earlier that summer—after many failed attempts over the years to shred the law piecemeal—Cantor promised colleagues that the House would vote on a “full repeal.” But even after it did, the measure was dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate...

Asked if he feels partly responsible for [the now-in-power GOP Congress'] current predicament, Cantor is unequivocal. “Oh,” he says, “100 percent.”

He goes further: “To give the impression that if Republicans were in control of the House and Senate, that we could do that when Obama was still in office . . . .” His voice trails off and he shakes his head. “I never believed it.”

He says he wasn’t the only one aware of the charade: “We sort of all got what was going on, that there was this disconnect in terms of communication, because no one wanted to take the time out in the general public to even think about ‘Wait a minute—that can’t happen.’ ” But, he adds, “if you’ve got that anger working for you, you’re gonna let it be.”

It’s a stunning admission from a former member of the party leadership—that the linchpin of GOP electoral strategy for the better part of a decade was a fantasy, a flame continually fanned solely because, when it came to midterm elections, it worked.

I don't mind criticisms of Trump from the right -- I mean, criticisms about his deviations from conservative orthodoxy designed to push him more to the right.

However, people like the Weekly Standard's Jonathan V. Last have taken to claiming that the failure of the "conservative" Senate to repeal Obamacare is Trump's fault -- for not persuading them of what they claimed to ardently believed for four election cycles running.

And yet people like him will smugly insist upon his own holy devotion to "principle," while making excuses for #FakeNewsRepublicans' own massive deviations from those same "principles."

There's an awful lot of posturing among some Republican leaders, both in Congress and in messaging institutions -- many of whom are much, much more liberal than the party base -- about being #MoreConservativeThanThou, when in fact they're arguing for a much more liberal Republican party but are continuing with the dishonest game of agitating on behalf of more liberal policy while claiming to be zealously fighting for True Conservative Principles.

Don't believe me? Ask them where they stand on transgenders in the military.

They will attempt to dodge the question by talking up process issues -- "Oh, Trump shouldn't have announced it on Twitter," "Trump should have gotten his people on board," "Trump should have waited for the military's review."

Shut them down on that bullshit -- those are valid points but they're being deployed like aluminum chaff to keep the missile from hitting.

Insist they answer the substantive question of whether or not the military should begin recruiting transgenders.

I'll bet you they continue to offer up procedural diversions even after you tell them you're not interested in an answer about procedure, but are demanding an answer on the core substantive issue.

They're liberals on many, many issues, but like pretending to be TruCons.

Just like their fellow traveler Eric Cantor.

89 Just a reminder for those who occasionally trot out:

GOP is just stupid...
GOP is afraid of the media...

When some piece of failure theater is exposed.

GOPe is not stupid. They are very clever in finding ways to run as a small govt for the people party while maintaining their big government power and support their chamber of commerce constituency.

GOPe is afraid of the media. But that pales in comparison to their active need to bring in the goods for their crony capitalist campaign check writers.

Maintaining the establishment is most important. Freaking cocktail parties don't even register as an issue, except maybe to their spouses. If you lose your seat the establishment will find millions of ways ($) to give you a golden parachute in exchange for your history of golden showers for their voters.

90 The problem is, the new party would probably be pulling the same stunt. They go where their bread is buttered.

See, that's the thing. Back in 2010, most of Obamacare wasn't even implemented. The GOP had just the House; Dems had Senate and Obama. But, per the constitution, all funding bills must come from the House. The GOP could have refused to let Obamacare get built and deployed. None of this supposed problem of taking stuff away from people who had gotten used to it. They could have stopped it from ever happening.

Instead, they waited until people were used to getting the goodies, then they say it's too late. They let it get too late.

Even now, they could still get the feds out of much of healthcare even if they leave the medicaid/medicare expansion in place. At least let the rest of it operate like a market. But, they want they feds running the whole thing.

108 O-care is not Medicaid, Medicaid is not O-care.

Medicaid is a half-century old program that consumes a bigger budget than most large countries have, and produces almost nothing in results (well, there is an epic amount of fraud, probably more than for anything other than, now, "disability"). But exerts a magical hold on incumbents of small character and intellect in select states. And much of the "expansion" is of enrollment of people who ..... were actually eligible before, but didn't know/didn't sign up (oh, yes, it's that ridiculous).

O-care is a tiny program of subsidized, crappy, unpopular insurance policies with limited networks, high deductibles, and prices that are significantly above readily available (now unavailable) plans pre-O-care.

Up to half of the very small number of O-care enrollees (most of whom hate their policies) are actually refugees from pre-O-care policies that were destroyed (mostly in the individual market). So, in other words, they aren't net-new insured, far from it. They're "worse insured". And a group much larger than that one is now without insurance for the first time in their lives due to the cost, or suffering great financial distress from having to pour a mortgage payment down the drain to get policies they had for half the cost of the cable bill, before.

And leaving O-care in place for its tiny tiny little program to crumble will do nothing to relieve the damage to the much, much larger number of people who previously had inexpensive coverage in the individual market.

Yes, THIS is a political landscape where no one dare repeal O-care. WTF?

That last poignant question is answered by the situation of most here, who through their comments reveal they are part of the 85% under group plans via employers, where little has changed. To them O-care is mostly an abstraction, with little current effect on them. So in the blank space they insert baseless but always-trendy bromides and nonsense like "you can't EVER repeal an entitlement!!" and "it was meant to fail, 'single payer' will magically and inexorably follow this collapse!!" etc.

149 we need a new crop of Repubs that will fund the wall. If we don't stop the invasion (of third world newly minted Democrats, of the drugs, and of the crime) ... then nothing else will matter in 20 years. We'll be a commie banana republic but with high speed internet and better toys.

And as that happens and Europe is Muslimized ... Australia may try to stand alone ... and they will also fail. But we will kick the can till something blows up ... the currency and markets, civil unrest, or maybe a nuke or two in some port.

So yeah, let's build the wall with some new Republicans. This last batch has gone rotten.

222 Sen. Rand Paul revealed that he spoke with President Donald Trump on Monday and told the president that he can take executive action to allow organizations to offer more affordable group health insurance plans.
Rand Paul, one of the Senates leading conservatives, told reporters that Trump will consider taking executive action to address the many problems with the healthcare system after Sen. John McCain tanked an Obamacare repeal bill last week.

The Kentucky senators proposed changes would allow groups such as AARP, which represents retirees, to form associations to allow individuals and small businesses to form larger groups to negotiate with health insurance companies for lower premiums and deductibles.

Senator Paul has long advocated for Association Health Plans (AHPs) or plans that would allow small businesses and individuals to group together across state lines through their membership in a trade or professional association to purchase health coverage for their families and employees at a lower cost. In addition, Pauls plan would allow individuals to pool together through any organization across state lines to purchase health insurance.

Trump can also reform Medicaid by approving state waivers allowing states to implement work requirements, drug testing, and apply monthly premiums to reduce the cost of the government health insurance program.

260 Just spitballing for the sake of conversation a minute here.

The Bible foretells something that could not have existed at any point in the past but (imo) is plainly visible as coming into being to anyone who simply looks around: an all-powerful one-world global government, an intricately interconnected one-world economy, and a syncretistic one-world religion, all to be headed up ultimately under one man.

Assume for a moment that global superstructure will indeed come to pass as written. In order for it to come to pass, a LOT of stage-setting will have to take place first, including fundamental changes in perception forced upon the masses via media as well as the utter destruction of nations that are too free-minded to submit to the global chain gang (namely, us).

Now just for argument's sake...does the general course of events in our modern world even remotely suggest to you the possibility that the stage is indeed being set to allow this global rule to form as a literal fact?

If so...coincidence?

Rand Paul, one of the Senates leading conservatives, told reporters that Trump will consider taking executive action to address the many problems with the healthcare system after Sen. John McCain tanked an Obamacare repeal bill last week.

The Kentucky senators proposed changes would allow groups such as AARP, which represents retirees, to form associations to allow individuals and small businesses to form larger groups to negotiate with health insurance companies for lower premiums and deductibles.

343 305 and Grammie,

Exactly. If we really are seeing what we're seeing (and we are), then there must be some...let's call it "spirit"...that orchestrates the whole thing and has done so for a very long time.

A spirit that somehow leads people to choose to do its will toward this end, men and women of all nationalities, races, religions and political affiliations and social status.

A spirit that spans generations, gluing together this humanly incomprehensible framework piece by piece and person by person, for decades on end AND WITHOUT VARYING ONE INCH FROM PROGRESS TOWARD THE END GOAL.

As much as he thinks he can bring about Utopia eventually, man can not pull that off. No way, no how. It is utterly beyond our capacity.

Something...a spirit...is uniting and moving it ALL.

WE know who he is, and we know his ultimate doom.

But here we are, watching the stage being set for the final act.

Depressing? Not from this perspective. It's exciting because all of humanity's sad history is finally drawing to a close, and glory and justice will reign.

Posted by: doomed at July 31, 2017 08:54 PM (UW4Uc)

344 As far as where we're headed - there's another view of how the process works besides the bibilical one, that interestingly comes up with much the same conclusions.

Oswald Spengler in "Decline of the West" had a remarkable theory of history, which all the Great and the Good have always hated, but which seems to keep coming true.

Spengler thought of "Cultures" as living organisms, and theorized that there had been 8 great Cultures since governments and civilizations arose in the middle east. He proposed that a particularly energetic group of people would give rise to a vibrant Culture. This Culture would give rise to it's own powerful Religion. The religious and cultural impulses would coalesce to form a powerful Civilization. This civilization would expand to take over all of the uncivilized areas it could reach.

Once a civilization reached its natural boundaries (ours covers the entire world) and then worked out, through war, the issues of who would control the flows of wealth and power, the civilization will always reach the stage of Empire.

Once a civilization reaches the Imperial stage, it becomes incredibly wealthy since it controls all it can reach. Under the influence of vast wealth and power, innovation stops, belief in religion dies, and corruption sets in. This stage often lasts for hundreds of years, but it always leads to the death of the civilization and culture in question, and a period refereed to as dark ages sets in, until in time a new civilization develops on the ruins of the one that had gone before.

And even if they continued to stonewall and wait for the next President to revoke all those waivers, I'm not so sure that the next President would really want to be the one who unilaterally put that yoke back onto every American's shoulders...

Well is it really beyond the realm of possibility that people become "self woke"? Ie. become aware that something is desperately wrong, now that we "control" two houses and the Presidency and we still can't get shit done. Then they might not mindlessly check off whoever's name appears on the ballot in the general election. The internet might be the way to provide quick recognition for unknowns. Remember Mike Flynn from a few years back? No, not that one. The one running for Congressional office in Illinois against Darin LaHood. ace was able to give him some visibility on this site. Imagine if all conservative blogs/websites offered a section (it could be programmed to detect your general location, like google ads), and it would show your current critter's rating, and offer up possible alternatives.

404 You must vote for the R because the D is so much worse. Yeah.

It's a gambit, like in chess. Or a sales pitch when you're about to walk. They don't believe it themselves.

If you said fuckit, you are done, I'm voting for the D, they wouldn't be concerned that the country will fall into some abyss from which it can't recover. They'll be concerned that their turn at the trough will be yanked, and they'll have to start work at a "think tank" until the tide changes.

It was a binary choice last Nov. and I couldn't abide not voting against such as Hellary, lest she be rewarded for her life choices. But there are no illusions to be had that a GOP government could govern as Republicans campaign.
That bloom was off the rose when Thad Cockring won because of walking around money courtesy of Barbour and Co, against a conservative choice.
Or when that bint in Alaska won as an independent against a conservative thanks to shit-tons of outside money most independents can only dream of.
That bloom was off the rose when that POS from Texas who lost his gig due to the K Street scandal (who immediately got a job on K Street) said they'd have to get to the new conservatives in the House and "Co-opt" them before Jim DeMint did.
Or when the Speaker of the House refused to support his party's candidate during the campaign last Nov., so sure he was that Trump would lose that he didn't bother to craft even the shell of a repeal bill that his party was promising to repeal on Day One.

Republicans; the party you vote for when you want socialism to come in little increments instead of big chunks.

436 Point one. Dems do NOT run honestly for federal seats - not outside the coasts (and even the bluest parts of some "blue" states). What used to be called "mountain West Democrats," in particular. They run as center-right Republicans, in many cases.

Even as select western states have changed (CO, NV), outside the bluest urban areas or university towns, find me a Dem who runs as anything remotely similar to a CA urban Dem or a NY or PA or New England urban Dem. Nope.

They did is in the south, for a while, as the older, truly conservative southern Dems retired out. But that didn't work for long.

Jeebus, folks, look at Obama's 2008 campaign, to the extent there was one. His "positions" were center-right on many hot-button topics. Of course not remotely reflecting his inclinations or future actions. I assume this ludicrous dissembling was to allow Rust Belt sorts to vote for him - though a serious lack of civic sense and smarts is required to be fooled by such an amateur and transparent bunch of b.s.

456 Senator Paul has long advocated for Association Health Plans (AHPs) or plans that would allow small businesses and individuals to group together across state lines through their membership in a trade or professional association to purchase health coverage for their families and employees at a lower cost. In addition, Pauls plan would allow individuals to pool together through any organization across state lines to purchase health insurance.

Trump can also reform Medicaid by approving state waivers allowing states to implement work requirements, drug testing, and apply monthly premiums to reduce the cost of the government health insurance program.

Many moons ago* back in my Usenet days I asked why this wasn't a thing. Let churches or schools or benevolent societies group together to buy health insurance plans for their members.

I was told it was illegal. I didn't think to ask chapter and verse what prohibited it but IIRC it was a libertarian lawyer who told me this so I believed him. It absolutely blew my mind that it was against the law for a group of people not in a commercial relationship to negotiate for and purchase a group health insurance plan.

468 Point Two. O-care already contains within it massive, unprecedented discretion for the secretary of HHS to change or waive things. That was just one of its features that makes it the monument to unaccountable, un-American, unconstitutional abdication to an administrative state that is.

Trump doesn't need EOs for lots of key things. Obviously all the waivers can be cancelled. But there is a lot more that Price can do with no more power than his office was already granted by the law itself.

Which is why I have been saying that Price should have already been taking some dramatic steps, as confidence-building measures, as part of the (barely mentioned, much less strongly pushed) "phased" repeal approach. He didn't/doesn't need to wait for a "skinny repeal" or space alien landings to do lots to unravel the worst parts of O-care.

Or when the Speaker of the House refused to support his party's candidate during the campaign last Nov., so sure he was that Trump would lose that he didn't bother to craft even the shell of a repeal bill that his party was promising to repeal on Day One."

Fine rant. The Republican Party's Suez Moment, though, came when it failed to repeal Obamacare due to Establishment fave Sen. McCain. Trump pretty well can whip out his schlong and demand any GOP MoC or Senator suck it now without embarrassment (which assumes he ever would have felt such an emotion).

When I was there "house.gov" was just email. No Members logged into a house.gov domain, everybody had their own domain controllers with their own domains VPN'd to their district offices. Every House Member has an annual IT budget for this left for them to spend it on whatever they want. I don't doubt the procurement business these guys started - when I was there every December was shocking with every House office replacing everything sparing no expense. Whatever they spent became next years budget allocation. If the spent less than last year then that budget got cut.

In Republican-land congress-critters raise a façade of being conservative that doesn't match their actions. They don't do this just to get elected. They do it for their entire careers. They have no end game of winning for the conservative cause. They don't care about that.

Of course the worst nutcases from the most retarded districts and states don't conceal their nature. But for many parts of the country, Dem mainstream politics would be death.

There are far fewer of these false-flag Dems then there were even 10 years ago (O-care itself cleaned out of a lot of them, this was part of the "wave" GOP victories in 2010 and 2014). But those people campaigned, always, as very centrist, at worst.

517 There are far fewer of these false-flag Dems then there were even 10 years ago (O-care itself cleaned out of a lot of them, this was part of the "wave" GOP victories in 2010 and 2014). But those people campaigned, always, as very centrist, at worst.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 31, 2017 09:38 PM (QDnY+)

If one would pay attention, and the vast majority of the public doesn't, you could tell where a politician stood by where they stand. Literally.
When a "moderate" or "centrist" dem is willing to stand next to the radicals of their party, behind them at a podium during a press conference, or next to the during a bill signing... Well, they just might not be that thing you think they are.

That's one tell.
But who parses pictures?

I vote for Door #1.

I have to think that some college kids have had their fill of SJW bullshit and are fighting back any way they can.

I have to think that in order to get out of bed in the morning.

521 Coming to the end of this thread, before the ONT.

It really needs the festive décor of a dozen GOP Congressliars, doing the Mussolini Shuffle & Ankle Dance, with the added benefit of flamethrowers applied thereon.

Or in other words, "A Damn Good Start."

Put it on Pay Per View. I'd subscribe!

Yes, except every single access attempt from every single IP address is logged with various alerts set up to immediately notify unusual behavior.

'Zactly. Sure as sysadmin I have access to everyone's everything but if I had a single other person's files or emails in MY possession, ie in a folder on my computer or stored on a flash drive, then I would really have to explain how/why or it's automatically assumed I am up to no good.

Just because you have access it doesn't follow you would/should have possession.

528 Well, the GOPe (RNC branch) did get behind Trump and did work their tail off in their GOTV on behalf of Trump - showing loyalty, getting rewarded (Reince and Spicer).

-------

A lot of fired-up Trump supporters. Most of the volunteer effort that I was a part of didn't give a crap about anyone than Trump.

The RNC provided the infrastructure, but Trump released his supporter list to the RNC and they got flooded with colunteers.

532 The two big divisions of how we view ourselves in connection to society is either as individualists or as collectivists. The people who seek elected office skew collectivist by an enormous margin, and even individualists who do get elected tend to become more collectivist simply by being in office. Collectivists favor socialist policy. Socialist policy is leftist policy. Leftist policy is basically what they democrats are going for. Thus, it isn't really surprising that most of the elected Republicans are basically not all that different from democrats. Hayak pointed out there were socialists in every party. But I think it is also worth mentioning that as far as the representatives selected by each party, the odds of them being socialists approaches 100%.

Government fundamentally is restrictive. It can't give money without taking it. Law that grants liberty fundamentally doesn't exist. At most, you encounter law which proclaims they won't restrict certain liberties. Liberty itself does not come from the state. Worse is that when the government does nothing, that too is seen as an ill. When doing something is how we evaluate them working, and doing something favors some social good despite the loss to individuals, what else can happen but everyone end up becoming collectivist. Rather, the ones who do seem to fight for liberty are the odd-balls who tend to get elected in only a very few districts.

534 Richard Shelby supports trannies in uniform and then I realized why, he is on the banking committee and all of his donors would crucify him if he opposed trannies in the military. JP Morgan can't give money to a homophobe so boom, Shelby supports trannies. Somebody should run against him in Alabana solely on the tranny issue.
