JK Rowling Tweet About Trump Refusing to Shake Hand of Little Boy Gets 76,000 Retweets; Boy's Mother Asks Her to Correct Lie; JK Rowling Refuses

When someone shows you who they are, believe them.' - Maya Angelou https://t.co/Op6HUrRo80
J.K. Rowling

Note that the tweet she includes is about Trump allegedly snubbing this boy, but it's no longer available -- apparently the original writer has delected it. Because it's a lie and all.

But JK Rowling keeps on keeping on.

How stunning, and how horrible, that Trump cannot bring himself to shake the hand of a small boy who only wanted to touch the President.
J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling)

Neither the boy's mother, nor journalists tweeting to JK Rowling to take down her lie, can get her to budge on it.

The Federalist has a good article on the left's bizarre elevation of this Young Adult writer (who can apparently only write one book) to leader of the Adult Babies.

Update: Now that Politifact has rated JK Rowling's tweet as pants-on-fire #FakeNews, she's finally deleted them.

Originally I included links to her tweets but now I just have up the text she included in them, as she's finally deleted them.

I very clearly projected my own sensitivities around the issue of disabled people being overlooked or ignored onto the images I saw and if that caused any distress to that boy or his family, I apologise unreservedly.

Two things: First, she does not apologize to the injured party (Trump), instead she apologizes to the boy. Second, her apology is itself a lie. I put her in with Stephanie Meyer. The writing itself is workmanlike and the dialogue is passable. What they have in common, and why they've sold so many books, is that they can tell a story. Note I didn't say they could plot well, there are glaring plotholes in HP, but they can each create a world and tell a story about that world that people want to hear.

That's harder than you think.

Oh Stephen King. It's funny, his political rants don't bother me because, well, he's batshit insane. He was batshit before the accident and the accident just made it that much worse.

You want to talk about story tellers. King tells stories that make you want to know the end. Of course, now he's at the what do you mean an editor, I don't need no steenking editor and the works are far worse for the wear. But when he's on, he's really on.

Carrie is a wonderful example of a novella, once you strip out the filler media story bits that were inserted to make it just barely novel length. It's a bit like Terminator, actually, just a story pared down to the bone. It's so effective because you know, you just know how it will end but you keep reading because maybe it won't end like that. Please don't let it end like that.

194 I thought the movies were fun. Didn't get through the books. I did try, though, which is why I thought it darkly humorous when she tried to claim Hermione was originally written to possibly be black, and why don't her detractors understand this?

Probably because her detractors were assuming she wasn't an out and out racist. Rowling's description of Hermione was a bushy-haired buck-toothed freak, and the only way she could become not ugly was by jettisoning her stereotypically black features.

195 My kids (K, 3rd, 5th and 6th grades) enjoyed them. Youngest practiced her reading on it -- startled her teacher -- and 3rd grade boy read them, before the advanced kids did. So the hype was really good for my crew. The really awful thing was Dobby's death and I really don't want to live with that trauma again.

201 Here's the thing. We've all been guilty of passing along links and reacting to matters that, once you look at the source material, turn out to be less than fully accurate shall we say. Hell, the Horde regularly shivs one another about this when posts go up here.

All she had to do within a reasonably close time frame to being told she was wrong (I mean like an hour or 2) was delete the tweets and put up something along the lines of "Sorry everyone, I saw a video from a source I find reliable and it turns out to have been false. I've deleted my tweets and apologize for continuing to spread misinformation, even accidentally. This is a good reminder to always double check, especially when it agrees with what you already think."

Done and done and she comes out of it looking like a better person without having to, you know, take any responsibility for what she did.

NOPE. Can't do that because Trump is the worst.

Rowling gives to multiple charities, including for research into Alzheimers and Multiple Sclerosis, and another charity that seeks to find homes for institutionalized children (a bigger problem in eastern Europe, where state care is often underfunded, than in the UK). It was estimated in 2016 that that year alone she gave away over 10% of her fortune to various causes.

None of which is to absolve her of blame in this, or say she's better than Parton, but it can be a mistake to make the blanket assumption that our ideological foes are also uncharitable with their fortunes and time.

288 Rowling is also credited as the writer and producer of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." It was just ok. The best part about it was the visuals. But the plot was predictable compared to the other books/movies, and there were maybe three interesting characters in the entire cast. And one of the villains was essentially a fundamentalist anti-witchcraft Christian, which I guess was Rowling's way of getting back at the Evangelicals who feared that her books would make their kids want to become Wiccans like 15 years ago.

Posted by: JuJuBee at July 31, 2017 07:14 PM (2NqXo)

Eh. I like both. Tolkien had a much better grasp of themes and ideas and backstory (Dear God, did he have backstory), but Rowling was a much more... personable writer? He was FAR better at pretty much every single aspect of writing fiction- except in how it was presented.

I still say Robert Jordan was a far better writer than Rowling though. That man could write a two page description of anything that would keep you riveted to your seat.

Blame the National Theatre, not Rowling. They often cast very color blind productions. Sometimes the casting Insisted Upon Itself, especially the dad he was a terrible choice. But she was great.

343 I was once at a get-together once where one of the guests said, without equivocation, that Peter Jackson's 'Lord Of The Rings' trilogy, taken as a whole, was the greatest film ever made. I didn't argue or otherwise indicate I thought the man was childish or superficial. I did, however, flash on the memory of a single scene from Bergman's 'Wild Strawberries', when the smug, self-righteous old judge protagonist realizes what a terrible, flawed human being he has been all along, all because his maid drops a glass. He picks it up and hands it to her, sees the strange expression on her face, asks her what's wrong. She tells him that's the kindest thing he's done for her in 20 years. And that's when it hits him. We see it hit him, that realization. The whole movie had been building for that moment. It's amazing.

I've heard other adults go on religiously about Star Trek or Star Wars or Harry Potter or whatever the infantile fuck and never argue or otherwise indicate I think they are childish or superficial, either. But I do.

But, you say, taste is subjective. Maybe. And maybe some people need to grow the hell up.

Posted by: troyriser at July 31, 2017 07:48 PM (4qf5a)

344 Troyriser, that guest is entitled to their opinon. And you are entitled to think they are an idiot. I love superhero fantasy films, and LOTR is an achievement. But greatest film of all time...probably not. Plus I think Hobbit diminishes its luster.

345 I will have to add Wild Strawberries to the list! Sounds interesting.
Posted by: LizLem at July 31, 2017 08:07 PM (hvf9s)

Bergman can be boring and indecipherable, no doubt about it, but 'Wild Strawberries' is neither of those things. I once binged on what are considered some of the greatest movies by the greatest directors, essentially to see why these directors and films are invoked so much. Some stand up to the hype--Fellini's 'La Strada', for example, or his 'La Dulce Vita'. Others don't. Point is, those are films for those with adult sensibilities.

Comes to that, I like fantasy and escapism too, but don't fool myself into believing I'm experiencing great art.

Rowling could not overcome her hatred of Trump to do this. Her apology is not sincere and not accepted. And she had shown us all what a shallow and pathetic creature she is.

I read her last book just as soon as it came out and was dumbstruck by all the Christian references, especially to the crucifixion of Christ and the resurrection. I thought at the time that Christians could actually start using the Harry Potter series as a teaching tool (aka the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) instead of boycotting it.). Just weeks later she "outed" Dumbledore. I'm convinced it was to scare off Christians. She didn't want to be associated with them intellectually. Bitch indeed.
