Mike Rowe, Drinking Stories, And Open Thread

Mike Rowe Sets College Grad Straight After He Accuses Him of Not Being in Favor of 'Higher-Education'

Mike, I have followed you since the first days of Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch, and I am amazed about your attitude toward higher education. I started my working career in the military then as an apprentice plumber and became a journeyman. At night I went to 2 years of community college and then took classes at the university until I had a degree. College allowed me to become a computer infrastructure analyst. I made more money, my body and back were spared.

Kill 'em with kindness....

First of all, congratulations on such a well-balanced resume. I sincerely admire that. Secondly, it's hard to believe you could have "followed" me from the first days of Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch, and be so completely mistaken about my stance on the importance of a college education.

17 @5

The problem is....now even baristas and trashmen need college degrees. Sure, many don't. But as more and more folks enter the workforce with degrees in hospitality management or environmental science, and as retirees retire out of positions...it will eventually become common that degrees will be necessary for lines of work you never would have guessed.

So, if you sit back and don't go to college for that particular job, you will eventually be on an unlevel playing field. You may lose a job because of it. Or, you may get hired, but escalate much slower than other employees.

We can sit and talk about how it should be. And yes, Mike would be right. People shouldn't have to get a college degree for certain jobs. But, eventually, that will change, and if you aren't prepared, you're going to be stuck.

32 Mike Rowe is spot on about a skills gap. There was a court case years ago against Duke Energy. I don't remember who the plaintiff was, but it was some SJW outfit. They sued because Duke Energy was using aptitude tests for new hires, and the SJW outfit decided that it was discriminatory. After Duke Energy lost, many businesses decided that because they could no longer use an aptitude test they would demand that the applicant would need to have a four year degree. I saw this in action at my last place of employment.
Now people who have no business going to college are going, running up huge debt and getting worthless degrees.
If I were to be counseling a young man who I knew would do poorly in college, I would advise him to go learn to weld. I know some welders that are knocking down six figures a year with a HS education.

39 Here goes my drinkinh story. Sorry if it too long.
**********

I was 19 yo. I had a cousin who was the same age and we pretty much grew up together since our mothers were always close but we now lived several miles apart. We would try to chase girls together, camp, or whatever else. At that time it was very hard to find a job, and we were both trying to go to college.

One night, we couldn't think of anything to do, but we could buy some cheap beer with the little money we had. He lived near a reservoir that had a small boat ramp and a parking lot. We decided to just park, drink some beer, and shoot the bull.

There was another car in the lot (actually a truck) and in the dark we couldn't see very well and just thought it was another parker or a couple who were luckier than us. After the beer finaly ran out, we ditched the beer cans. There wasn't a trash can in the lot, and we didn't want to get cayght with a bunch of empty beer cans by the cops, and we didn't want to take them home, either.

As we were pulling out, the lane was blocked by a very large turtle. We stopped the car, got out, and checked it out. Well, my dad grew up in the city during the depression. He would talk about a man on his sreet who had built a small concrete pond in his basement where he would keep snapping turtles he would catch and sell them. So I thought, "Gee, dad would really like to see thks turtle. I wonder if his neighbor ever had a turtle this big." And it was BIG.

My cousin wasn't at all interested, but I had to have that turtle. The only thing I knew about snapping turtles was that they had a very long neck and needed to be held by the end of the tail. But every time I got a hold of its tail and barelly got it off the ground, "hiss, snap, thrash" and I would drop it. I was not going to be defeated, though, and I finally got a death grip on his tail, held it as far away from my body as I could, and didn'let go. This was not easy as I guess he weighed at least 50 lbs ( his shell alone was about 3'long). Well, the trunk was alredy openand I was able to pkace him on his back between the spare and the back wall of the trunk. And then we finally took off. I was driving, if I didn't mention it.

Acouple hundred yards down the main road red lights started flashing behind us. With all that beer on my breath I thought "Oh no!" I pulled to the side of the road, and the flashing lights stopped behind me. A man in a smokey hat and green uniform apeared at the window. Holding a couple beer cans in his hand, hhea ashed "Do these belong to you?" What could I say but yes.

He then identified himself as Ranger So-And-So. Then he asked, "Do you have a fishing liscence?" I told him no, but I wasn't doing any fishing. He then explains that, in the state of Ohio, you need a liscence to take frogs and turtles, even on private property since they migrate, and he saw me put that turtle in the trunk. By now we realized that he must have been in the truck that was in the parking lot with us.

Then he said, "If you let that turtle go, I won't site you for fishing without a licence. But I am going to site you for littering, both of you."

So we each had to go to court, pay a fine plus costs which came to $17 each. Which was a small fortune for us when minjmum wage was $1.10/hr. And that is all. And I don't think my cousin has ever forgiven me, even 45yrs later

50 @29

I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm just saying how it is, in my opinion.

Here is an example. A friend of mine graduated from college and returned to my hometown, as did I. At the time, one of the mayor's major policy points was he was tired of seeing the kids getting their college degrees and moving on to a big city. He wanted the college graduates to return home. So, they had an opening as Parks manager which...while an important job, it was one of those part-time things that a Boomer with a year of community college under his belt typically ran.

Well, friend was offered the job, promoted to full time and has been in that position for some time, but recently moved on. Well, now, guess what? Now, not only are the applicants suggested to have a college degree, but also 5 years management experience and all these other suggested attributes. If these had been the standards when he applied, he wouldn't have gotten the job.

I've seen the same example over and over again.

53 Every thing Mike Rowe said is true. A college education is valuable...but it has to be done towards something of value. My grandparents' and parents' education valued a university education so that their children and grandchildren would not have to sweat for a living. That is well and good, but look at the USA now! Most manufactured goods are imported, most existing jobs that require sweating are being filled with imported workers, and many people in the 18-50 year old gap are sitting around doing nothing, even though they have an alleged valuable college education. A vocational or agricultural vocation (or a term in the military straight out of school) is treated as if the youth in question is mentally deficient.

58 SMFH, welding is just one small slice of it. About five years ago, the local tv station had a story about a woman professional who lost her job due to the Obama economy and couldn't find any work. She decided to become a welder. Make no mistake, it's hot dirty work and can be dangerous. They interviewed the director of the school and he stated that he gets anywhere from five to ten requests a week for welders and he can only send one. I checked out the local opportunity school pamphlet and for a 15 month course it cost $17,000.00. When you graduate, you'd be certified. If I were looking at going to college, getting a junk degree and owing four times that much with much less earning potential I think I'd go be a welder too.

It was Ballard Bitter, then Longhammer, now just IPA. It's a decent IPA for a mid-premium price, although I think InBev has gotten its hook in (they're distributed and partially owned by *them*) and the quality isn't quite what it used to be; certainly the packaging has been changed for the worse - it no longer has the cardboard dividers in the half-racks.

102 Interesting story on sports page of LA Times today. They were doing a lengthy story/puff piece about Sam Darnold, the sophomore USC quarterback. Tip--the sports writers at the Times are USC honks.

But that said, quarterback Sam's dad started working in construction--but is not a medical gas plumber at the UC Irvine Hospital. My local hospital in a Los Angeles suburb has about 8 gas plumbers on staff--and they are busy all the time keeping the medical gas systems up and running in a big hospital. Those are blue collar jobs that can't be done by a guy or girl with a shiny new "Gender Studies" degree.

113 @88

Exactly. We were old when I started college 15+ years ago (God I'm old) that by the time we were in the workforce, a Masters Degree will be expected.

For me...when I was in college, I worked at a department at the hospital, really enjoyed it, got to know the lady in charge. She had a degree, but not in that particular department. They were just looking to hire from within, and she liked the hours, basically. She had no experience going into it, on the job training mostly.

Well, when she was getting ready to retire, I got a heads up to submit a resume, as I would have been her choice to replace her. I had a bachelor's and by this point about 7 years of work experience.

I couldn't even get an interview, because they were wanting someone with a Masters. So even though I trained under the person who had been there for 20 years, and she thought I was suitable to fill the position...I was under-educated. What a joke.

We had a couple of ugly dying palm trees too close to the house we bought. 146 Sorry Bertram I went out for a bit to water plants. Yes, one of the FB linked Mike Rowe posts I read was his response to candidate qualifications and how he went from working at a movie theatre to HSN (possibly another outfit) with no acting or sales experience. Actors didn't know how to sell and many experienced salespeople got camera shy so the TV shopping channel had come up with having people talking about pencils on camera for 15 minutes. If you could do that you could handle the job and they started you on the overnight shifts IRRC.

148 From White House Anon at 4Chan /pol/:

"As you can see that the investigations are starting and the deep state is starting to really shake up. Also, you can see this slingshot effect is really starting to work. Collusion talk is all over and all the spotlights are focus on the Democrats. We now found out that some of the Senators are Democrats in Republicans clothing so our strategy is the 2018 Midterms. We potentially have enough information that will be uncovered to the public that will make sure Democrats will never win anything ever again (This includes all federal, state, and local), so those 8 to 10 seats that have Democratic Senators that are in red states will most likely be turned over. We are hoping for a 60/40 split. We need your help to spread all of this information around. We are an administration focused on freedom and the end of government corruption. Make sure to use all of your creative strategies to show the true colours of the Democrats."

FYI.... they are also saying that Awan was leaking military movements to various people, which is why one of the Navy Seals was killed early in the Trump admin. They knew EXACTLY what we were doing, thanks to Awan and the Dems.

163 Having just switched out of the rat race and into the blue collar world, I'm constantly made aware of new jobs that are completely invisible to kids going to school at any level. Many of them are new to me, too, and I had a lot of dirty summer jobs.

Today there are no dirty summer jobs. What are kids taught by their SJW schools? Office work. Their teachers know nothing else.

How is a kid ever going to get into sheet metal work, for instance? There's some serious skill and danger going into that job. He will never know such a job exists unless a family member is doing it.

Anyways, the thoughts aren't fully formed, but it's the invisibility of it all that's been on my mind for a few months.

170 From White House Anon at 4Chan /pol/:

175 I didn't drink before college, but -- after joining the rugby club -- found drinking beer a great way to numb the pain my body was usually in.

Loved to play some of the drinking games that involved mental acuity. Did you ever have a friend who actually improved at such games the more he drank? I did. Kid was really sharp -- never studied and got straight A's -- but seemingly drank every night. Remember he was the nephew of a former U.S. Senator from OK.

There was a great episode of "WKRP In Cincinnati" where the DJ, Dr. Johnny Fever, has a cop in-studio and they're measuring his reaction time after he downs one drink after another to prove how dangerous it is to drink and drive. Hilarious episode (called "Fish Story" -- couldn't find any clips online) where Fever's reaction time actually improves the more he drinks ...

He wanted to be an actor, but we suggested that that would very difficult to get into as a career, and he wojld be a very good teacher with his personality and math skills. So he went through two years in education, felt very confident, and decided he would major in chemical engineering. I was skeptical. I'm a chem e. and know it is one of the most difficult BS degrees to get. But he made it, including co-op. His biggest problem getting hired (especially in the Obama economy) was explaining why it took him 7 years to get through college.

186 Michael Caine has always struck me as a very decent, stand-up guy.

-
Some Michael Caine quotes from IMDb:

on Jaws: The Revenge (1987)] I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.

Be like a duck, my mother used to tell me. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like hell underneath.

I've made an awful lot of films. In fact, I've made a lot of awful films.

Old? I stopped ageing at 38. I still am 38 . . . except when they say, 'Run up those stairs.'

The Government has taken tax up to 50 per cent, and if it goes to 51, I will be back in America. I will not pay the Government more than I get. No way, ever. They've reached their limit with me, and that's what will happen to a lot of people. You know how much they made out of that high taxation all those years ago? Nothing. But they sent a mass of incredible brains to America. This return to high tax will only deepen our debt. While top-earners will be hit by the highest tax in 20 years, our MPs escape Scot-free. We've got three-and-a-half million layabouts laying about on benefits, and I'm 76, getting up at 6am to go to work to keep them. Let's get everybody back to work so we can save a couple of billion and cut tax, not keep sticking it on.

I left the country for eight years when tax was put up to 82 per cent. You didn't get the 82 per cent tax from me for eight years. You didn't get any tax at all from me for the next eight years. Apart from that, a quarter of a billion dollars of movies were made outside this country instead of inside it which is just from one stupid, loud-mouth moronic actor. Imagine what is happening to companies, proper companies, who then disappear. It's no good.

I voted for Brexit. I'd rather be a poor master than a rich servant. It wasn't about racism, immigrants or anything, it was about freedom. In politics you're always going into areas you've never been before, so you're going to get lost and then you're going to find your way, and then it'll be all right.

187 Well, friend was offered the job, promoted to full time and has been in that position for some time, but recently moved on. Well, now, guess what? Now, not only are the applicants suggested to have a college degree, but also 5 years management experience and all these other suggested attributes. If these had been the standards when he applied, he wouldn't have gotten the job.

She should find one on her own. Schools are useless for internships and mentors. She should find someone in the industry that is willing to mentor her / give her advice. They will probably give her some names of people to talk to for more advice if not jobs. Eventually that will lead her to something.

She openly admitted to me that shey, they and their campus was treated like dirt by the higher-ups at the Liberal Arts Campus, because they were teaching skills that required people to get their hands dirty from time to time. Just sad, and I empathized with her 100%. But again, I still didn't get the job.

If we don't get our fiscal house in order, the world is going to go completely to shit because we won't be able to project power in the way that keeps the usual suspects in check. We need to update our nuclear arsenal while at the same time being way too dependent on space and undersea cabling.

Here's one of the things that pisses me off the most about this "White Privilege" crap. I don't have a degree although I do have a couple of years of college. For most of the first part of my life after I got out of the Navy, I was an over the road truck driver. I worked my ever loving ass off. The only time I moved jobs was for a better job. I never got a better job because I was white, I got a better job because I had proved that I could get my load to the destination, on time, with no accidents. I pretty well wrecked my body doing it. But I made a good living, I'm proud of it, and I have nothing to be ashamed of. I got out of it what I put into it, so it was the American dream. I didn't need special privileges. I didn't need some kind of special considerations. I didn't need to be coddled. I did it all on my own. It was a hard life, and at times it was dangerous, but it was the life I chose. And I'm glad I did. I'm really tired of hearing about how my life was better just because I was born white. I'll quit before I get banned.*rant off*

Welcome to my life.

Something I've noticed that is not true in all cases, but in many:

If you have a job that you like and you're very good at, you will NOT be promoted, no matter how long you hang around. You see, you make your boss look good. And as long as you're in that position, he looks good. So... your job that you thought had advancement potential will have NO potential. Most especially if you're smarter than your boss and you both know it.

/disclaimer: not in all cases. Some people actually have great bosses that will let them advance.

430 Unfortunately I think Seoul is a goner no matter what, within the next 20 years. If I were POTUS I might be talking to the South Koreans about decentralizing their government apparatus and creating new smaller capitals all over their country.
Posted by: qdpsteve at July 30, 2017 08:47 PM (eMKNe)

I don't know if the Norks' multi-thousand artillery tubes aimed at Seoul are as much of a threat as claimed. Remember what happened to the Maginot Line? Fixed fortifications are just that, fixed. They are also fixed targets. I am sure that aircraft and spy satellites have continuously monitored the construction of those artillery emplacements, and the ROK probably knows down to the last centimeter where each set of blast doors is located.

Lil' Kim has to open a blast door to get a round off. Those huge doors don't open and close in a heartbeat. First shell falls on Seoul, there will be a short-range cruise missile fly right in those blast doors and destroy the artillery piece and kill its crew. From that time on, every set of blast doors that opens will get its own missile. And those missiles can be launched from mobile truck-mounted launchers, so Kim will have a hard time knocking all of them out.

The weddings we watch are on the lawn at a posh resort on the lake. The ceremony was lovely. The bridesmaids were lovely. Even the bride was perfectly lovely.

But the ceremony ended - and the bridal party started with the picture-taking, leaving all their guests on the lawn with no drinks or anything! just standing there! Finally the guests started filtering into the waterfront bar and buying themselves drinks.

Outside - in July - you don't give your guests anything to drink???

First: as reported at True Pundit, John McCain has been revealed as the leaker of President Trump's classified phone calls to world leaders. McCain can (and should) be prosecuted for this illegal activity, regardless of his illness.

Second: Via Wikileaks- Robert Mueller, you know, the "independent" counsel who's going to investigate the Trump/"Russian collusion" claim? In 2009 Mueller flew to Russia to deliver ten grams of enriched uranium to the Kremlin.

This week should be very interesting.

505 I actually remembered the snapping turtle story but got here too late to repeat it. My husband learned to weld and got onto the ship yards during the Reagan era. He knew how to read blueprints so went to work for a bridge building company. He says it's better to be the smartest guy in a group of less smart co-workers than to be the dumber one in a group of smart people. I think he's right.

And we had some excitement because he took a nap in the truck while I was shopping in Safeway. They called EMTs out because they were concerned about him. He was fine, just missed a nap earlier in the day.

I'm laughing at your story because it reminds me of the time I went in for a sudden change back in the 80's.

I had long, straight, brown hair. When I say long, I mean butt length. Hey, I was still looking like a flower child.

So I go to the first salon I see that doesn't look too expensive and tell the stylist ---"anything else, whatever you like."

She cuts off about 3 feet of hair, gives me piles of highlights and a perm. Holy crap!

I feel your pain. I had a hairdresser give me layers and he jacked up my hair. Now I'm very clear when they trim my hair. No layers and just clean up the ends.

If you live in a big city they have specialists that take care of long hair. They will trim any split ends and just clean up your ends.

I think long hair is easier. I have a lot of hair, really thick.
Lazy day, ponytail, side snake braid etc.,
Curls, hot rollers, flat iron, up do. The options are endless.

Per Babalu Blog, the government is taking names of those who vote, and has promised openly to pay special attention to those on the voter rolls who do not vote.
The government does not care what the vote count is since they do the counting and certifying, they just need the image that they won on a vote of the majority of citizens.

Part of the problem is that no-one wants a seceded Venezuelan state. Colombia, Brazil, the Guianas and Surinam don't want the problems, and the only remaining neighbor is the Dutch at Curacao.

as a side note:

Simon Bolivar once stated in a letter to Juan Jose Flores, dictator of Ecuador as Bolivar was actually dying, waiting for a ship that would carry him to his final exile in Britain:

1.) America is not governable by us
2.) He who would serve a revolution plows in the sea.
3.) The only thing one can do in [South] America is to leave.
4.) This country will fall infallibly into the hands of the uncontrolled mob, and from there to pass, almost imperceptibly, to tyrants of all colors and races.
5.) As we are consumed by every crime and oppressed by viciousness the Europeans will not deign to conquer us.
6.) If it were possible for any part of the world to return into primitive chaos, this would be the final destination of [South] America.

Bolivar was prescient in many things, and I hope that there is enough will to make these predictions wrong. I know some people with relatives in Venezuela. I hope for those people Bolivar was speaking from his despair, and not from any oracular vision.

729 My sister is a nurse, and same thing...there are 2 hospitals in her city, and they all wear the same shade of blue scrubs, so if you see a nurse out and about..they could belong anywhere.

731 Just done w/ Dad tonight, he came down to get some IL sweet corn, he's taking back 10 doz, it's that much better than WI crap. At this point they are still bringing it up from GA or IN and it's days old.

Great to have him visit. At 81 he still drives down here every so often, it about a 4 hr drive. I guess someday we will always have to make the drive, but so far he's very competent.

He repeats himself a lot about Mom, she died 3 yrs ago, he's still adjusting. I'm glad we can help, but I'm still working and can't get up there more.
