Overnight Open Thread (29 Jul 2017)

This really should be a big story in the mainstream media. Wasserman Schultz kept paying tech expert suspected of stealing House computers.

Military Training

Oh God, yes please. Mattis: Get unnecessary training off warfighters' backs. Something tells me though that we'll still have a lot of the stupid training to sit through year after year.

Whiteness

Dumb, dumb, dumb. Conference teaches K-12 educators how to combat 'whiteness in schools'. And they wonder why students aren't doing better in core curriculum.

Russia

Oh I bet they were. I know I would if I was in their shoes. It would be all too easy with the number of gullible fools on both sides. Were the Russians playing both sides?

First Trap and Cat Shot On The Ford

PSA

Haha, this is awesome. Officials warn consumers of counterfeit tickets ahead of solar eclipse.

Pee

Asking the important questions. Should you pee on your lawn?

Cream

On this day in 1966, the supergroup Cream made their live debut in Manchester, England.

Chevy Suburban

Delta Force vets show us why they love Chevy's big SUVs. I know I preferred the up-armored version in Zamboanga. I didn't like the ride in the non-armored Toyota panel van on the way out.

Male Cleavage

So I guess the 70's are coming back. Male cleavage is a thing now.

RV's and Millennials

I don't know about this. Millennials expected to push RV sales to record highs. Maybe they're living in them fulltime if American home ownership is in sharp decline.

Empty Threat

Michael Moore refuses to live in a country where Trump is President. Trump has been President for 6 months already and I doubt your so-called citizen army will remove him so when exactly are you leaving Mikey?

Named for Sgt Rafael Peralta who was killed in Fallujah after rolling over on a grenade and saving the lives of 8 Marines. Despite witness statements, he has been denied the Medal of Honor because medical "experts" said that he could not have pulled a grenade to his chest as he was dying. He was awarded the Navy Cross, but I really hope that General Mattis takes another look at this case.

It's Michiganian. "Michigander" was an insult dating back to either the Frostbitten Convention or the Civil War. The ones who popularized it were writers at the Detroit Free Press aka Freep, the libtard newspaper at odds with the conservative Detroit News.

BTW The Freep should be dead but during the joint operating agreement was given every advantage.

151 Rant Warning -

6:30am, phone rings. Automated call from Amtrak to tell me that my return trip from Chicago in mid-August may be delayed 15-30 minutes. While I do appreciate being alerted to delays, why in hell would they think it is OK to wake people up on a Saturday morning about a trip that is 22 days out?

Plus if they did any looking at their own train information, they would see that my connection into Chicago has been running so far behind schedule that in the last 10 days there have only been two times I would have been able to make that train anyway! (However I am looking forward to Amtrak paying for my hotel/meals/taxi for a night in Chicago when I miss that "guaranteed connection".)

I spoke to them and asked to be taken off the call list that I did not ask to be put on. Email alerts only since I don't want to be panicked by calls in the middle of the night.

Rant off.

166 So has everyone seen how the police someplace busted a homeless person for public intox, and they showed how much money he/she had raised, and encouraged people to give their money to homeless programs and shelters instead.

Well, I'm sure you guys can guess the outrage. eyeroll. Every panhandler is a saint.

So my experience...in college, I had driven myself, roommate, and her boyfriend to the grocery store to pick up, well, groceries. So, we were on an exit ramp, which pulls up to a stoplight, and traffic was backed up, but we could see a homeless person up ahead. I'm driving, but roomie and her bf starts scavaging through their groceries and picking things to put in a bag. Pop tarts, beef jerky, bottled water. Just trying to give the guy something. So, we finally pull up.

Both of them had their windows rolled down (passenger side.) My roommate handed him the bag of food, and her bf was going to say a few words to him (prayer). So, roomie hands guy bag of food items, guy looks inside, then throws it in the back window at my roommate's bf as we were pulling slowly ahead. It happened in a matter of seconds, but the guy saw what he was getting, or not getting as it were...and wasn't pleased, I guess. Then, he flipped us off for good measure and shouted at us as we drove away.

200 I bought a washing machine today to replace a 7-year-old washing machine in a rental property I manage. There is nothing wrong with the current washing machine except that it's high efficiency and the tenants don't understand how to use it. I'm tired of dealing with their complaints and paying for service visits, so . . . new washing machine.

And here's the thing - apparently it's impossible to buy a washing machine that isn't high efficiency, but so many people must have complained that washing their clothes in very little water didn't actually get them clean that the manufacturers created a work-around, the deep fill option. If you set the washer to deep fill, the tub will fill with water, which is probably what most people do. But that means you're wasting a lot of water if you only want to do a small load.

So thanks all you eco-geniuses who have brought us the inefficient high-efficiency washing machine. Thanks a lot.

A few years ago, I bought an LG "Tromm" front-loader from a store that sold demo appliances from show homes. Discounted, but full warranty. The motherboard crapped out; got a service guy to replace it, free. Worked OK for a while, but the bearing became noisy, and eventually it quit with a load of clothes in it, and full drum of water. Finally got it pried open; took my clothes to the laundromat to finish them. I parted out the damn washer right there in the basement. The water seal around the single shaft had failed, and water had washed the grease out of the ONE ball bearing. Idiotic design.

Bought a used top loader for a hundred bucks, and it has been going strong ever since.

245 years ago, we had a genuine drought Summer in the Atl burbs. The various counties asked us to do all we could to save water. We did, usage down 20%.

The thanks we got? 10% rate increase in water rates, and an automatic 2% increase yearly for the next ten years. With all the water saving they begged us to do, their revenues went down too much.,....

Screw them. Never again.

269 I bought a washing machine today to replace a 7-year-old washing machine in a rental property I manage.

Find the dealership that sells Speed Queen equipment to the local Laundrymats. They'll sell you one without the coin-op system. Or, you can buy it with that device, and really piss off your tenants.

Point is, they're classic, old-tech, electro-mechanical monsters of damn near-indestructible design and quality.

Think, 1970s Maytag or Kenmore kind of robust.

If you're really lucky, that vendor will have a good condition used one to sell you. That'd be a win.

Last place I'd go for a machine these days would be the modern Big Box stores. Buy Industrial, buy ONCE. It'll save money in the long run.

You know, back when I was a little Peon, wringer washers were still a thing, although automatic washers were becoming popular. Every home had twin "laundry tubs" made of sheet zinc and cement. Washing machine discharged water into one or both. Many washers had a "suds saver". You could discharge the sudsy wash water into one tub, do the rinse cycles out of the other tub, and then the washer would suck up the sudsy water from the tub to do another load. Now that was some serious water saving.

We were back a couple of yrs later and they finally had phone service to Tricones! Beautiful off the beaten path place then. The Mericans used to surf there in the 60s.

332 On the Buying Commercial thing, the same can apply to every appliance in the kitchen, all the way down to can openers (manual, vertical bar, horizontal crank type still rules), hand-held blenders, etc.

The only limitation(s), really, are finding commercial gear to fit into residential cabinetry cut-outs, sized for consumer grade stuff.

The durability of commercial equipment would astonish the average consumer. And that's not hyperbole.

Now, granted.... the designer colors are pretty much limited to stainless, stainless and stainless.

But you can sometimes get blue or red knobs on the gas stovetop, instead of the classic black with white letters.

You might contact your water supplier to see if they offer an additional meter for outside water. If they do, they will probably charge you for the meter and you might have to get a plumber to install it. On the upside, you will no longer be paying the sewer charge on water that never gets to the sewer.

426 One of the most endearing qualities of cats is that, like colonial Americans, they won't be ruled.

They may be docile for long periods of time. They may even be engaging and interactive. But it's always on their terms. The moment that cooperation that they deem oppressive is demanded of them, they struggle and fight in a fashion that would make a BLM protestor jealous. They do not really card if their oppressor outweighs them 10 or 15 to 1, they will fight and if the odds are not in their favor they will strike and then run guerrila warfare style.

The dog is man's best friend and a true blue loyalist to the cause, but long live the rebellion and commitment to freedom of the cat.

451 You know, back when I was a little Peon, wringer washers were still a thing, although automatic washers were becoming popular. Now that was some serious water saving
-------

My grandma had that setup. She grew up in a poor family, her dad had some kind of pension but it wasn't very much at all. They gardened for food, and recycled and the rest of it. This was in the 1920s. There was no way she would throw water away after just once through on the wash, so she had gramps buy a suds saver. I never knew what it was called. I remember dad telling me that. She never got a driver license. The house was always spotless. They were poor, but that didn't mean ya had to live like a bum. When her first husband died she was worried about what to do with her insurance money. A good friend who was president of the savings and loan suggested some stocks, and they must have been some good picks. Her and gramps, with his job, they were able to take a vacation now and then. We had to listen to the depression tales on Christmas Eve. "I got an Orange one year, and shared it with my sister, one year I got a scarf". etc.

Obviously I'm not interested in that way, but I keep trying to steer the ship back to neutral conversation, and the guy tells me he is a student, and I am like..."Oh my God, how old are you?" which turns into a back and forth of how old are you/how old do you think I am. The kid was 23. He thought I was like 20, but when I said I was older than him, he upped it to like 24. I'm 34! Then, he is all like..."Great a cougar" And I am equally flattered and horrified....I'm flattered that I look young enough to be mistaken for my 20s, and I am horrified that I am old enough to be referred to as a cougar.

Then...guess what? He sends a dick pick. Yup. Just when I thought I was old enough to not have to deal with immature yuppies in life....I am sent a dick pick. I feel like I have truly arrived in life.

I was doing a quick search. It seems the exact details vary with state law, but I'm seeing stuff like "police starting to take dick pics seriously".

If it's sent from someone over 18 to someone under 18, that is treated seriously.

You can also take civil action action, suing them for harassment and all that.

If I were woman and some idiot sent me a dick pic out of the blue, I'd get mad enough to try to get him, I think. At least scare the shit out of him.

Once upon a time I was paid to do housing inspections on migrant field worker camps, and found one guy, nice guy really, scrubbing his clothes on a slab of concrete propped up on a rock in the back of his cabin with a hose as a water source.

After passing back and forth some greetings and polite comments I asked what the deal was, and he said the operator of the camp shut down the laundry facilities because the septic system was backing up and he didn't want to go into town to do laundry.
I notified the appropriate state agency and the owner of the camp got told to get it fixed (Migrant and Seasonal Protection Act has specific language about laundry facilities) but I realized later that had been my opportunity to set up my own delivery laundry service.

What fun. I had 3 herniated and 2 bulged disks in my neck. Headbanger's disease. I got one of those home cervical traction kits and it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It pulls up on your head and puts space between the disks and gets the pressure off the nerves.

When my neck blew out the second time I was in the emergency room twice in the same night, they shot me up with everything known to mankind, and I was up for 24 hours. It was unreal. I called the chiropractor that fixed me the first time and he suggested the traction thingy. I put myself in that sucker, the pain vanished in 15 seconds and I passed out in it for 3 hours. I woke up with just a slight stiffness and the pain was gone.

whoever invented that thing should be sailing around the caribbean getting blown by chicks he don't know.

Hah -- One woman's response to getting unsolicited dick pics was to send them to -- the dude's mom. Here's you son, aren't you proud?

And, I was reading some "help from an attorney forum". Some dude, in NJ I think, posted a message, "Help, I sent a dick pick and the chick called the cops and now they're threatening to charge me!"

The advice was basically, relax, they're likely not going to waste the time and money to charge you. Say nothing and if they charge you, get an attorney.

They were threatening to charge him with harassment, defined under the state law as "sending lewd or lascivious images with intent to harass". More details in the wording.

No, its like a white nylon web like thing. There was case in Georgia a few years ago where they were charging some idiot for sending unsolicited dick pics to some woman.

The Georgia Supreme Court overturned it, arguing it was a stretching the law under which he was charged.

The legislature was going to try to shore it up to make it it explicit that it included electronic communications, but it failed.

That was a few years ago, don't know if they've done anything since.

well it wasn't me. lol

Strange enough, after years in music I got more skeletons in my closet than a medieval ossuary, but there are zero dick pics out there. None, zip, nada. No cameras allowed when the fun started. Chicks would ask every so often, and I would say, you want a dick pic, suuuure, but its going to be in your mouth, so if you decide to get stupid with the pic your face is gonna be in it. lol

Of course a few screwballs called my bluff, but still, there are no dick pics. I'm crazy, but I'm not stupid.

I'm wondering if all that money paid to the Clinton foundation was payment for sensitive congressional documents with the DNC being a cutout and the IT guy the courier which would go a long way toward explaining why Debbie Wasserman Schultz kept the guy on the payroll for so long.

Everyone was focused on the Clintons selling potential Presidential access when they were already selling documents from congress.

Now the police will never find out the motive! With their recent comments after the earlier terror attack, The Deutsche Polizei are less competent than Inspector Clouseau.

Also, it appears as if the police are starting to take some range time. Shootin' 'em dead is a good way to end this jihadi nonsense exploding all over Europe. Trials (and resulting soft sentences) are a waste of time, money and effort on everybody's part.

676 The problem is it's so pervasive, one can't point it out without looking like you are the wackjob. Even if one doesn't believe in that stuff, THEY do, and the effect is pretty much the same, so what's the difference? The messages that are put out to young people are especially bad, with descriptions of life being pointless, and suicide is an option... WTF?

Way back in the day, my brother had a 45 RPM record of Zep's "Hey Hey What Can I Do" & "Immigrant Song" iirc. In the runout groove, where the matrix numbers are at, was the inscription "Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law", this is in reference to Aleister Crowley, a notorious Satanist. Like I mentioned, I'm not "into" that stuff, but a lot of people are. Nothing good can come of that, in my opinion.

681 673 what's the difference between black raspberries and blackberries?

I'm no expert. All I know is: Black raspberries taste like red raspberries, they're just reddish-black instead of red, while blackberries are jet-black and taste like blackberries. Raspberries (red or black) are sweeter to my palate.

Black raspberries have a greater range than blackberries, extending across the upper Great Plains, and black raspberry brambles arch over and re-root at the tips (blackberries don't), like spiny hoops that make the bramble thickets some tough pickin' in the wild.

I would suggest you find a GP who will accept cash and see them sooner rather than later. Even a walk-in clinic could probably give you a referral to the appropriate resources. If you do not have insurance there are almost certainly city/county services available where you live - I would, however, caution you to proceed carefully where mental issues are involved. In this case, carefully does not necessarily mean slowly.

I am sorry you are going through this. It is very important you get him in to the doctor for an evaluation. He needs to be examined to determine the cause of the psychosis.

There should be a free/low-cost clinic in your area - or your local city/county services likely have services for mental health, you can check the NAMI site too.

Episodes of psychosis are hard on the brain - traumatic.
The sooner the cause can be identified is the sooner treatment can start & early treatment usually means a better prognosis.

Prayers to you & your family

You've got to get him to someone who knows what they're doing. When I went through that mess with my mother that that was the key. Finding some mental health experts who could evaluate her. Once they did, the head lady there immediately called a psychiatrist and, using the proper clinical language, got the ball rolling. My mother was admitted quickly.

Before that, regular MDs and those without training were pretty much useless. Mental conditions are out of their depth, and they don't want to do much. Unless the patient is some sort of active threat.
