Trump Shifts Iran Compliance Certification Authority Away from State Department to His Own Team
Update: Tillerson Now "Taking a Little Time Off"

Or at least he's trying to do that.

President Donald Trump has reportedly sidelined the State Department and entrusted White House staffers with making the potential case for withholding certification of Iran at the next 90-day review of the nuclear deal, Foreign Policy reported.

According to the report, the president made the decision after his "contentious meeting" with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week.

Newsmax reported:

“This is about the president asking Tillerson at the last certification meeting 90 days earlier to lay the groundwork so Trump could consider his options," one of the sources said.

"Tillerson did not do this, and Trump is infuriated. He can't trust his secretary of state to do his job, so he is turning to the few White House staffers he trusts the most," the source added.

Tillerson, it is reported, is generally "frustrated" (possibly by this maneuver specifically) and is considering resigning.

CNN reports that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is becoming “increasingly frustrated” with President Donald Trump and his administration to the point where he is allegedly considering a resignation from his post, and could quit before 2017 ends.

Sources reportedly close to Tillerson told CNN that the Secretary of State is losing patience with Trump and, as a result, there may be a “Rexit” in the near future.

Except for the Iran certification, Tillerson hasn't impressed me as especially good or especially bad. He's just a warm body filling a hole.

My problem with forcing Tillerson out is the same I have with forcing Sessions out: Who's going to take this job?

No one takes a stressful job except for one reason: to increase their reputation, power, and personal earning potential.

It doesn't seem like being a Secretary in the Trump Administration is the gateway to accomplishing any of those things.

So who comes in? Who has the stature enough, and the Establishment blessing enough (because you know no man comes into the Kingdom of Government except through the Establishment), and is also willing to be professionally humiliated down the line, to become the SecState?

Update: Tillerson "taking a little time off."

Wichita Woman wins national contest, then was disqualified for supporting Trump

An Instagram post showing support for President Donald Trump apparently disqualified a local makeup artist from a national contest.

Gypsy Freeman, who splits time between Wichita and Florida, last month was declared the winner of an Instagram contest sponsored by Kat Von D Beauty, according to screenshots taken by Freeman.

The winner of the Saint + Sinner Contest – and a guest – was to be flown to Los Angeles to attend the launch party of a new makeup line from Kat Von D, perhaps best known for her role on “LA Ink.” The approximate value of the prize package, which included a $500 gift card to Sephora, was $2,100.

To enter, Freeman submitted an Instagram image of an angelic figure beside a girl in an all-black outfit and thick mascara.

When Freeman was announced as the winner, curious Instagrammers went to her page and found a pro-Trump post from Election Day last year.

That evening, she received a direct message from Kat Von D’s personal Instagram account, telling her the celebrity had “drawn a personal line in the sand between myself and anyone who supports that man,” according to screenshots of the conversation.

“My launch party [and my brand] celebrates many things that Trump is against,” the celebrity went on to say, according to the screenshots. “And I just need you to know that I personally have a hard time with inviting anyone who would support such an anti-feminist, anti-homosexual/LGBT, anti-immigrant, and anti-climate change fascist such as Trump.”

According to the screenshots, Freeman replied: “I won’t be upset with you if you can’t have us there for these reasons, and I wish you the best. We would love to be there, of course, but I sincerely do understand if you decide to replace us with someone who supports the candidate you support.”

The celebrity then replied, according to the screenshots provided: “It’s not about inviting people based on their political stance – it’s just extremely difficult (borderline impossible) for me to be friends with or associate with anyone who would support a man who goes against everything I stand for. I would feel the same way towards people who supported Hitler, or any other fascist.”

Multiple phone calls and messages left with Kendo Holdings, the parent company of Kat Von D Beauty, have not been returned.

The Florida-based photographer who took the photos for Freeman’s entry, Jenn Bischof, was invited to – and attended – the launch party in her place, Freeman said. A post on Bischof’s Instagram account shows her at the party alongside Kat Von D.

All evidence of the contest’s existence has since been deleted from the brand’s Instagram account and website, though the contest rules are available in a cached version of the site. The rules state that any legal U.S. resident 18 or older was eligible to win and could enter by submitting a “Saint and Sinner inspired” makeup look.

Freeman told The Eagle it’s “really unfortunate” that politics was brought into an art contest “where I never brought it into the art contest.”

“I didn’t erase (the Trump post) either,” she said. “Part of the great thing about this country is having freedom of speech.

“I said the same thing to Kat. I was like, ‘You can say whatever you want to say and you shouldn’t filter comments based on who I support. It doesn’t bother me.’ ”

Freeman – who does fashion editorial, styling and a variety of bridal work – said she has used Kat Von D Beauty products in her makeup kit for years, though she will likely stop doing so. She said she plans to contact Sephora, which sells the product line, about the incident as well.

“It’s definitely bigotry – it’s everything that they’re calling us, they’re doing,” she said. “It’s a huge case of hypocrisy.”

And thus far, this has been Trump's biggest mistake. Not removing those who are against him. It isn't like you have to ferret them out. If you walked down the hall and indiscriminately picked 50% of the people you saw, you still wouldn't incur any friendly fire.

36 True story:

The word "malaria" comes from the Italian "mal" (bad" + "aria" (air) -- due to the medieval belief that malaria was caused by the "bad air" around marshy areas. They had no idea it was the mosquitos in the air, not the air itself.

But there was a large swampy area west of Rome where the Tiber delta was, and since Roman times it was thought to be cursed, literally cursed, with "mal aria," which made people sick, so it was avoided.

Then in the 1930s Mussolini announced that he was literally going to "drain the swamp," a massive engineering project. But he did it -- he drained the swamp around the Tiber delta.

And it worked! Suddenly no one was getting malaria anymore (because there was no longer around breeding grounds for mosquito larvae).

This is actually one of the things that really really made Mussolini popular. After he drained the swamp, the people loved him wholeheartedly.

Not that I approve of Mussolini's other policies, but Trump needs to take a big historical lesson from this:

Draining the swamp will make you eternally popular.

It may be difficult to do, but the effort is worth it.

Drain that swamp! Get rid of Washington Malaria!

That's exactly right. The Bureaucracy is unaccountable and only swings one way: to the left. There has to be house cleaning and changes made or nothing good can come of it no matter who wins or what majority there is. And even then, its going to be up to congress to deal with some wayward judges, as well because they've proved that they're willing to abandon every semblence of justice, prudence, logic, and reason to impose their own desires.

And it would get loud at times.

I believe Tillerson has more experience negotiating with the Islamists and likely believes he knows more than Trump. And how much Trump is taking advice from his cabinet remains to be seen.

And as been pointed out, who can believe the MSM.

To that point, my bing page has a headline that says, 99% of former NFL players have CTE, according to study.

No, 99% of the 111 brains submitted by family members of players who died with dementia, mental issues, and suicides had CTE.

The study had that small of a sample. Not to be written off. But there is also a Penn State study just released of football players who played in HS in the 50s(yes, different game , BUT without as good protective equipment AND concussion protocol) and there was no difference in the rate of dementia, etc. between players and non players in that study.

143 "making the potential case for withholding certification of Iran at the next 90-day review of the nuclear deal"

Maybe also now a good time to remind ourselves of just how weird the terms of that deal by Obama and Kerry really were.

It ultimately comes down to this question: are the Iranians continuing their nuclear weapons development effort? And precisely how does that get determined? As Reagan once said in a different context, trust but verify.

The Senate, who used Bob Corker's facially unconstitutional enabling bill to grease the deal through without the usual two-thirds treaty vote, didn't get to discuss verification and validation. At all.

In fact, even Obama's top negotiators (led by Wendy Sherman, the former social worker who also handled the failed Nork nuke deal for Billy Jeff) weren't allowed to know anything at all about how verification would be handled.

Instead, all of that was contained in a "side annex" separately negotiated between Tehran and... the IAEA, instead of the USA. No one from the American side has any idea what specific measures and steps are in that protocol.

It's completely opaque. It relies entirely upon this international alphabet-soup agency to be a trusted broker, *and also* not to get fooled by Iranian subterfuges with centrifuges.

Plus, the IAEA themselves are hardly a bastion of objectivity. They've been regularly and plausibly accused of giving rogue states an easy go in the past. Quis custodiet?

That's the thing - I don't think so. I think you're underestimating the demo, so to speak. That's what Trump or Trumpism or whatever is doing differently. It isn't just a monolithic party of old rich white conservatives. That's the myth the left wants you to believe.

150 After hearing him speak a few times, I did not think Tillersaurus Rex was cut out for this job. Same thing with Sessions. Rush had a good point today - maybe Trump was/is looking for "brawlers" who fight just like he does for what HE deems is important. Bringing in the Mooch is a good example of that. We need more brawlers. Less milquetoast.

Concur...

This all started with Perot and the reform party.... which was a very civilized movement...

They destroyed that movement... but the anger and people were still out there...

They became the TEA Party... which was less organized, and more populist... which got coopted and destroyed...

Which led to the Trump movement... which is populist, nationalist, and angry....

If Washington manages to destroy that movement? What comes next will be uglier....

Great point. Too many people start wringing their hands when the latest issue of Pravda hits the stands.

I think it's because bloggers have to rely upon the media for content. Otherwise they're just writing about food or Mom shit or whatever. It's not like most of them are actually out in the street with a notepad, a bad suit, and a fedora with a press card stuck in the brim. They're just looking at Drudge or the stuff in the news feed and snarking off of it.

I also think the media bubble has been so all containing and powerful that even still it's difficult for many to not reflexively accept the latest breathless report. That usually comes later, but c'mon everyone we all know the MSM is full of chit. They've been writing these articles about Trump for over a year now.

229 Not for nothing, these agencies should be carrying out White House policy. The agencies should be dispassionate administrators of the President' s policy.

We all know that's not the case. They drag their feet, make the policy they want, and try to stymie the White House if it asks for something different.

We elect the President, not the administrative state. For good or ill, the President should get to implement his policy. If that means de certifying the Iran deal (even if all the diplomats in Foggy Bottom scream and jump up and down and spit wooden nickels), so be it.

265 re: objection to Bolton

The Trump election was a direct reflection of the people's need to change how things in Washington are done. We wanted a non-politician to lead the country. We got that.

With many of the appointees so far, we've continued to get that. Questionable results, but it is still early. I'm still very happy with the appointments that are not of the politican-variety.

I specifically wanted to bust up the good ol' boys and girls club--you know, the ones who get to DC and will do anything to stay there. Case in point, Kelly Ayotte. She was the most wonderful candidate. I can't tell you how excited I was when she was running for the seat and then won; I lived in CT at the time and was so jealous of the NH residents in that they actually had a real conservative representing them in the Senate. CT hasn't had that in my entire adulthood. Then I moved to NH and the first political event I went to was a town hall meeting hosted by Kelly Ayotte in my tiny little town of 2,600 residents. I was beyond thrilled.

Then I watched, over the space of a few years, as she was co-opted and poisoned by the good ol' system in DC, a la John McCain. During Ayotte's reelection campaign, after she had bargained away all of her conservative credit, John Bolton got on his horse to stump for her. Hugely. I even went to see him at a meet and greet. Typical politician. Exactly what I don't want in DC representing me. And yes, I know he's got some conservative cred, but he is part of the past, part of the Bushies, part of the ol' system, and I simply can't get the fascination with him. Is there no one else on the radar screen that could fill the role of Secretary of State? Why is he the go-to guy?

So no, he is used to be top dog at Exxon. However, he has served a a multitude of boards concurrently and knows how this works. Sorry, I like Trump but I don't agree with everything he says or does. This is a guy who constantly praised single payer healthcare when he was running and then admitted he had no idea how complicated the healthcare issue is.

When Obama was trying help get Obamacare passed he gave more than 40 Obamacare specific speeches. How many has Trump given? Not campaign rallies where he mentions it but full on speeches about healthcare? 1 or 2?

His job is to help lead not just yell at people or tweet about them when he disagrees. He prizes loyalty above all, well you don't build loyalty by constantly hammering people.

Correct. But there are some drives that you need more than one rewrite to clear all the caches - or so I've heard. I really don't know about the logistics of data caching on hard drives.

But without a doubt, once a bit is overwritten, the old data is long gone. A guy used an electron microscope to try to recover bits from one overwrite and couldn't do it.

There was some program I was watching in a cheap interstate hotel a couple weeks back about lottery winners. Holy shit, weird stories. In one case the grandmother had a dream and insisted the young man buy a lottery ticket. First time purchase, millions of dollars.

Not sure who produced it but it was certainly interesting.

Someone drove a floppy disc through a shredder and cops taped it back together over several weeks to the point they could read data off it. Its just flipped bits, as long as the charge remains they can be read.

For law enforcement its sort of a game: us vs the defendant. They want to win, even if its dreary and slow and annoying. Its their job, like Lucille Ball checking the chocolates on the assembly line. Sometimes its really dull but they hate to lose.

So far Iran has been re-certified as just AOK. EU has said they will retaliate against the USA if we put more sanctions on Russia. The senior State diplomats do not think jihad is a "real thing". There are elements within State that still think we need to invade and rebuild (with jihadi help) more countries. There is a program still promoting trade with Iran. There are still Hillary! holdovers that will not release emails and documents court ordered to be released.

415 The thing about Iran that infuriates me is that they really our our enemy. They declared war on the USA, they want us dead. They want to conquer the whole world for Islam, and use nuclear fire if necessary. They don't make a secret of this, the leaders of the country say it pretty regularly.

Russia keeps being called our "enemy" by idiots in the Democratic Party but they are not our enemy. Romney is right, they are our biggest geopolitical concern, but they are so as a rival or a competitor, not a foe.

China? That's an enemy. They too declared "cyber war" on the USA. North Korea? Enemy. But Russia is not.

Yet its Russia that's declared our enemy and hysteria is raised over by the same people who want to buddy up to Iran. What the living hell???

No, its where you hire an assassin with a golden gun and superfluous nipple.

Because the DNC and the Clintons actually DID conspire with the Russians and their best defense is to conflate anything Russia and go on offense.

I think they find it useful in keeping at least some nevertrumpers from wavering in their commitment of hate.

Seriously I think the first intent was to scare off some GOP voters from Trump because they believed that Republicans hate and fear Russians still like its 1964. So they floated that crap to get some to stay home.

Then, when they found out that Hillary had lost, all the illegal crap they did to spy on Trump was going to come to light so they cranked it up to give cover to their actions.

And, its a useful squirrel to stop leftist voters from remembering how badly they were jobbed by the Democratic Party during the primaries. And if the Dem voters really stopped to think and analyze, they'd recognize that their party deliberately cheated and broke the system to force the single least liked person on earth to be their candidate, blew over a billion dollars -- outspending Trump 3:1 -- and lost anyway with the most overt and extreme media tilt in US history.

So, SQUIRREL!

450 sounds like all 3 brothers were the "hackers", not the Russians

I wonder if they weren't the ones that stole all that data from State that was found hacked. You know all the info they said some Muslim source took?

So corrupt, stupid, and incompetent yet so protected by the press, the system and the GOPe.

451 They CAN recover data that's been overwritten, depending on how it has been.

No, they can't.

If you replace every 0 with a 1, then its a matter of just reversing that.

I don't even know what this is supposed to be an example of?

The professional intel-level HD cleaning programs go over 7 times using a different technique every time. Just a couple times and they can reverse engineer it. Enough times and its just impossible at least in any reasonable time frame.

Yeah ... but that stuff's all bullshit. Two or three overwrites with zeros and/or random and it IS ALL GONE. GONE. DISAPPEARED. NOT TO BE.

ANd, as was said earlier, even one overwrite is enough. But I would do a few just to be on the super-safe side. No need for 7 or anything like that.

454 Trump's presidential campaign stumbled for a while, and he cleaned
house. Then it got a lot better. While you can't really do that with
cabinet positions I think we'll see things pick up over time. My guess

Bannon.

460 Yeah ... but that stuff's all bullshit. Two or three overwrites with zeros and/or random and it IS ALL GONE. GONE. DISAPPEARED. NOT TO BE.

As you probably know, there is no truly randomization on a computer. If you can crack the pattern, you can reverse the randomization. If you can undo the 0's in the right pattern you can reveal what was once there: all it takes is finding some data that is readable, and you know how to uncover the rest.

That's why you said 2-3 time, because once or even twice isn't enough. All 0's, all 1's, random, and you're probably good. Once through isn't.

No. Not even close. ExxonMobil is as deeply embedded in the swap and the whole corporate cronyism aspects as the huge staff of highly paid K Street Lobbyists they employ. Just look at his support for the Paris Accords. Big oil became big energy years ago. And if you can kill of coal and replace it with nat gas then climate change legislation and regulation are GOOD for business (not that nat gas has some strong free market advantages these days).

470 Gonna willow m'sef here, prolly, but

1) I don't think we really know much, if anything, about how Tillerson is doing, whether there was a "contentious" meeting, or anything else. This is one huge problem of having, essentially, no press. You can't trust most of their info, and they simply don't even make a head-fake at reporting things they don't want out.

2) Below thread. Seems ace is mixing things up. His post goes on about the Mueller matter, when Trump's tweet is about investigations of Hillary's massive crime wave (or lack thereof ..... again, as far as we know, but recall that most investigations proceed with total discretion, so we *shouldn't* really know anything about such investigations if they are happening).

I think circumstances here are so compelling, and distinctive, that Sessions actually should provide something - a wink, a nod, an explicit if cryptic statement, something - to let the world know that the greatest criminal scandal in American govt. history *is* not going to be simply swept under the rug because of the incompetence and corruption of Comey and the Obama DOJ types.

But the Mueller thing is really entirely separate - and that's the subject of Trump's problematic tweets. I say problematic because FFS he's your own AG, if there's a problem, there's the phone, or his office is about 5 blocks away. Trump's tweeting, in general, is fine, even magnificent at times, though mostly amusing rather than valuable. But b-slapping your own AG via Twitter? WTF?

487 As with most things, in the absence of reliable and meaningful info (in this case about Tillerson), most people here just plug in their ready-made likes/hates/biases/hobby horses, and come to sweeping, firm conclusions.

Yep, Exxon's very involved in trying to capture regulation, and is guilty of the idiotic climate-change kabuki/rent-seeking that most big corporations are wallowing in these days. Which tells us precisely nothing about what's happening at State, or whether Tillerson is at fault. And on, and on.

Taking away JICPOA (Iran debacle review) authority from State *would* be a big deal, if it's true, and it happened for the reasons reported - probably. But every element of that construction just used has big unknowns about it. And then there are the unknown unknowns.

498 Bolton has a long list of Foggy Bottom Boys (& girls) who need to be fired. That is reason enough for making him SoS. There are some 140,000 DoS employees, or roughly 700 for every country in the world. 180 of those countries should need no more than about 20 employees (Suriname?, Burkina Faso?, Tuvalu?, Palau?, Greenland? etc.?).

The remainder should be able to get by with, say, 1,000 employees each. Throw in several thousand more to manage passports, visas, refugees and the whole shooting match would need less than 30,000 bureaucrats. The DoS just doesn't need to be involved in much of what it does now:
--Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations (-->DoD)
--Bureau of Counterterrorism (-->FBI, CIA, NSA)
--Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (Delete)
--Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (-->FBI / DoJ)
Office of Global Criminal Justice (-->FBI / DoJ)
Office of Global Youth Issues (Delete)
Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (Delete)
