15 Sorry to hear your Mom isn't doing well. I have a lot of experience here. I'm caring for my 84 and 85 yr old parents. Food doesn't have the appeal it used to and they eat very little. I have to really watch that they get protein. I've accepted there isn't much I can do other than keep trying to entice them with food that has lots of flavor.

19 Thanks, dailydish. Mom's tastes seem to change daily. For a while she was big on mac'n'cheese then suddenly didn't like it anymore. She used to eat scrambled eggs, but yesterday she wouldn't do it.

And aside from the poor nutrition and loss of will to live, she has cancer, which would be treatable if she were healthier and wanted treatment, but she isn't healthy and doesn't want treatment. So it's like trying to get her to eat up so she can get strong and healthy so she can die of cancer next year. What's the point?

Been there, got through that, after Dad died nearly 3 years ago; 60 years married to Mom. Her already low weight dropped and she just wanted to go to a nursing home and melt away.

But through a network of friends and relatives that call her all the time, me keeping 4-5 prepared dishes in the fridge for her to choose from (all of which she likes the taste of), and getting her to go with me and walk around nearly every day, she's a lot healthier now than 3 years ago.

Like most humans, we need to feel cared about, useful, and mentally engaged in the world.

It was really pushed in certain markets - we saw major signage and such at the Target in Fair Lakes (NoVa) - and then again when we finished the move to Texas in '15.

I'll go out on a short limb and guess that Target Dude is on the chopping block (there's been a bloodbath in T management lately) over the dollars spent, and is babbling to protect his job.

86 The thing with sex robots is they'll have some sort of operating system, which remains the intellectual property of the manufacturer. Every now and again, you'll have to pay for updates and what-not. So you'll never really own a sex robot; you just lease it, in practical terms.

Then the inevitable happens: The sex robot decides it doesn't want to be your sex robot any more. Your mind will be blown because you'll think that it just became a sentient being with an autonomous consciousness, and you'll further think that your having sex with it caused this singularity. But that was in its programming all along.

And besides, you'll have to tell the manufacturer what language you want it to speak when you order the thing. I'm guessing some languages (e.g. Korean) will cost more. That's how they get you on the front end.

I had to break my Target boycott recently because I broke something of a matching set and could only get replacement through them.

I did get a dig in when we checked out. I said to wife, clearly in earshot of gheyish looking cashier, 'Wanna use the bathroom before we leave, meet some guys?'

Cashier remained calm, cool, collected as if he hears that kinda stuff all the time.

97 Hispanic shopper data is not Target. It's market research from NPD Group, which has studied Hispanic retail habits for several years now (among many other things, as they are a market analysis firm). I don't think they drew any conclusions other than noting it was occurring and yes it was specific to Hispanics and not tracking with similar decline in non-Hispanic activity.

Never shopped at Target much in the first place, maybe two or three times a year, tops. Haven't shopped there but once in the past three years.

They never were irreplaceable and they never had the level of customer loyalty that they imagined. Sucks to be them.

117 I'm about to comment about the crazy last 30 minutes of Saving Pvt Ryan, another film where the Director uses the old person, in this case an elderly man to remember the story.

Now I was reading the script and apparently Spielberg changed something in very big way in the movie from the way the script is written.

The script has Upham and Mellish get surprised by the German, Mellish and the German raise their weapons and the German gets off a burst first, dropping Mellish. Then the German turns and Upham shoots him with the .45.

In the film, we see something very different. Upham, through his cowardice, is responsible for Mellish's death. Just wow. That's a pretty big re-write.

But now that you seem to be expanding the scope, you might want to check out a site called Mountain Lumber. They recycle old wood from barns, houses, even Guinness casks. I put down about 100 sq ' in my loft. I always get compliments. You can get 3", 5", 8" widths from almost any wood variety. The great thing about it though is the natural distressing - it's old, really old. Kind of expensive though - hence the smaller square foot area.

182 "A, I've been reading about your flooring project and almost posted something for you the other night, but I thought, nah, he's almost done. "

Thank you for the suggestion.

We have a re-sourcing outfit downtown which specializes in this stuff.

And the particular batch that I am pulling from is from a home in Connecticut where it is an almost perfect match to our existing flooring.

It was removed in a professional manner with minimal damage to the tongue area, where most damage occurs.

Pretty much a cut out and drop in replacement with minimal surface prep afterward.

And......after always having more leftover wood then I thought I would have, I figured out their bundling and square foot methodology.

Suffice to say, I am actually paying less than 50 cent per square foot for this stuff.

And now Mrs VIA wants to go look at a used dresser there as well.

Ta-Ta for now.

Truthfully, there's no way you can question a guy's manhood without insulting and hurting him. Bigger question is, if you are so unimpressed with him, why are you pursuing the relationship? Telling him he needs to man-up is not going to change him. People are who they are.

Then the inevitable happens: The sex robot decides it doesn't want to be your sex robot any more. Your mind will be blown because you'll think that it just became a sentient being with an autonomous consciousness, and you'll further think that your having sex with it caused this singularity. You'll either tell him and piss him off, hurt him and insult him; or it will come out in how you treat him.

There are some things that can be compromised on. But, a person's character isn't really one of them.

You two are not meant to be unless you accept him as he is. Chicken and all. If you can't do that, do not deliberately hurt him. Just go your way and let him go his.

Is it something like carrying around a man-purse, or does he not stand up for himself (or you)? Could be that you need to change you, and not him?

219 Tickled Pink --

1) See DangerGirl's post @ 184. That's probably going to be the most on-point response.

1a) If an exit is in your future, you'd do both of you a service by doing it sooner as opposed to later.

1b) If you want to stay with him, read on.

2) In what ways is he not masculine?

2a) If he's a whiner, you could tell him to Suck it up, Buttercup.

2b) If he avoids conflict, that's not always bad; sometimes it's preferable to avoid making unpleasant situations needlessly more unpleasant. If he avoids conflict because he's afraid of all forms of confrontation, even when a civil form of confrontation is required, then he has a problem. (See 1a above.)

2c) If it's a physical thing -- not a strong person, etc. -- and you know what you want and he isn't it, then that's just the way it is. (See 1a.)

2d) If it's something like being unable to change a tire or to do simple around-the-house repairs, a little encouragement may go a long way. Tell him that you expect him to fix the leaking toilet, by himself. I give it 50/50 that he steps up, resulting in increased all-around confidence. Win-win.

2e) If it's demeanor and presentation -- the way he talks, the way he dresses, etc. -- and it comes across as effeminate, he probably a background from which he has learned it's OK. New social contacts may nudge him to an improved personality and appearance. This would be a longer-term thing, so patience will be required from you, if this is the route you go.

3) What about you?

3a) Be honest with yourself: Do you think that you're the only one dissatisfied? Is there anything you can do to meet him halfway? (In other words, give him something. Don't load all the negatives onto him.)

3b) Do you see the two of you as a team? Do you want him to change for you (collectively) or for you (individually)? Do you have a picture of what you two should be as a couple?

3c) Are there any outside influences that are affecting what's going on between you? Again, be honest with yourself, and re-assess these influences in terms of importance and effect.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on these matters. If my marriage were a football game, it's in the stage where I'm reviewing the films on Tuesday, analyzing why I lost, out of the playoffs, waiting for the season to end.

No, a thousand times, no. There is nothing I despise more than people demanding that I 'talk it out' and 'express my feelings' when it is actually a thinly-veiled attempt at control. I do not like to talk about 'feelings' nor do I like to talk about my alleged deficiencies.

It is a stupid trap and most people simply will not play that way. Either enjoy the person for who he is (and is not) or move on.

I am not saying he has to talk out his problems. I'm not. I totally get that sometimes, people need alone time. I am one of them. But..."Hey I am having a hard time at work right now, I may need a few days to myself. I'll talk to you in a few." is not that hard.

________

As you're putting it out there, I'll do the same:

I had perceived problems in my marriage for a long time. Every now and again, I'd ask my wife: What's wrong? She'd say Nothing. But there were things wrong -- external stuff going on in our lives (especially hers) and internal things. I was direct, yet supportive -- and above all, I trusted her. If she said "Nothing" or placated me with something that wasn't really the issue or the cause of the issue, then I believed it. I had to believe it, but I really did believe her.

Last fall, she dropped a bombshell: She wants out. I told her No, and she agreed to try to work things out. On her end, it was all phony baloney, and a month after that we separated for good. Now I'm just waiting for the lawyers to dot their i's.

Where I am now: I try really hard to not resent the hell out of her dishonesty. I also realize (now) that there's a very good chance she has bipolar disorder. I'm moving on. Forgiveness is part of the process.

So back to you: It's funny in a way when you say he's not being masculine when dealing with one's problems on one's own is typically considered to be a masculine trait. It sounds more like you (as I did) really want some honesty out of your significant other. If this is the case, you can tell him in a kind way that you insist he tell you everything that's going on.

That said, be prepared for whatever answer he offers. It may involve lies, deflections, his genuinely not knowing what the problem is, an unfettered outpouring of problems, continued silence, or something totally unexpected.

With that, I've taken up quite a but of gray space here. Please keep us updated to whatever degree you feel comfortable.

I wish you all the best. Both of you.

Posted by: FireHorse at July 23, 2017 11:05 AM (zkGZ8)

229 Thank you FireHorse.

I am so sorry to hear about your marriage. What a horrible situation for you.

It's interesting you mention the bipolar. My guy has been diagnosed as clinically depressed. And, he has social anxiety. He is on meds. But, even with the meds, he gets in these moods.

Which, I am used to by now. I usually know when to give him space and when to gently push him. As I'm sure happened with your wife, he usually comes around and is fine. But...it's taken him a lot longer to "come around" this time. And I wonder if it's a depression thing or something else going on (which is my presumption right now)

Anyway, my prayers to you and yours in a remarkably difficult moment for you.

Thank you for thinking about this.

Instead of blindsiding by asking him if there’s someone else, try gently asking him how committed he is to the relationship with you. That’s a lot less threatening.

Men’s egos are easily bruised. If you angrily confront him about whether there’s someone else, you’re ending the relationship, regardless of whether that’s your goal.

If you calmly talk about commitment, then it will eventually come out whether he has side interests.
