One Small Step for Thursday's ONT

“Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed”

On July 20th, 1969, the lunar module Eagle touched down on the moon, and mankind took their first steps off planet Earth. This is, in fact, my earliest memory. I was 2 ½ at the time, and I remember my mother sitting me down in front of the big old RCA console TV to watch grainy footage of Neil Armstrong descending the ladder. A half a billion other humans watched with me as the world held its collective breath.

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

We come in peace, for all mankind

Indeed.

M O O N, That Spells Moon

Here's a recap of that day from NASA

When it comes time to set Eagle down in the Sea of Tranquility, Armstrong improvises, manually piloting the ship past an area littered with boulders. During the final seconds of descent, Eagle's computer is sounding alarms.

It turns out to be a simple case of the computer trying to do too many things at once, but as Aldrin will later point out, "unfortunately it came up when we did not want to be trying to solve these particular problems."

When the lunar module lands at 4:18 p.m EDT, only 30 seconds of fuel remain. Armstrong radios "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Mission control erupts in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again." (› Play Audio)

Armstrong will later confirm that landing was his biggest concern, saying "the unknowns were rampant," and "there were just a thousand things to worry about."

The flag they left is bleached white now, but, with apologies to General John J. Pershing, time will not dim the glory of their deeds. Because of these men, and all of the people standing behind them on the ground, my youthful eyes looked to the stars and saw not the unreachable firmament that had tantalized earlier generations, but a universe of possibility.

Unconscionable

If Apollo 11 gave us dreams of the sky, down here on Earth we still have to deal with all of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. This story incensed me. IQ costs Oregon parents their kids, but is that fair?

Seems the state has taken their kids away from this couple on the grounds that they are too stupid to raise kids. Note that there is no indication that they are incapable of caring for them, no accusation of harm to the children, nothing except the overreaching and crushing power of the state. This is why our Forefathers were determined that we would be citizens, not subjects. The state exists at our pleasure, to serve us. Bad things are going to happen if it keeps insisting that we exist to serve it. Very bad things.

Poetry

Do you like Kipling? I dunno, I've never kippled, but for some reason, the last story brings this poem to mind.

The Beginnings
by Rudyard Kipling

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late
With long arrears to make good,
When the English began to hate.

They were not easily moved,
They were icy-willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the English began to hate.

Their voices were even and low,
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show,
When the English began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd,
It was not taught by the State.
No man spoke it aloud,
When the English began to hate.

It was not suddenly bred,
It will not swiftly abate,
Through the chill years ahead,
When Time shall count from the date
That the English began to hate.

Not sure why that came to mind. No idea, really. It's a mystery.

ETA Special thanks to Moron pst314, who pointed out that I had originally posted this poem wrong. Not just wrong, but disastrously wrong. I remembered the poem, but when I Googled it up to get the full thing, I somehow got to a Stormfront-type site that had adjusted the words to fit their racist agenda, and I wasn't on the ball enough to realize this before I posted it. Apologies to the Horde and especially to Rudyard Kipling.

Musical Interlude

In honor of the opening story:

Round Up the Usual Suspects

Novelty Store Heist Suspect Remains At Large

Seems a tattooed man grabbed a couple of plastic dicks and ran off. He was last seen, according to the manager, “running north toward the grocery store with the two biggest dongs I sell.” Let's hope that when this miscreant is caught, he faces a stiff sentence. One hesitates to imagine the depths he intends to plumb with his ill-gotten merchandise, but we can be sure that they will cause some friction in his household. Even though his defense will undoubtedly be that he was just screwing around, police should be careful that justice doesn't get shafted and that he does hard time.

Wit

Know what I miss about President W Bush? His class, of course, but also his wit.

It's also lying on its side in the dust. Buzz Aldrin caught a quick look out the window on departure, saying goodbye forever to Tranquillity Base, and realized they had planted it too close to the LM. The ascent engine exhaust blew it over, and they weren't going back to put it upright again.

The later flights moved the flag to a more circumspect radius from the touchdown point, where it would remain vertical.

83 Credit where credit is due, George Silver aka "Tinkr" to Air Warrior online players was one of the MIT computer team's hardware experts. Present that day as part of the huge number of contactor support groups stationed at NASA mission control available to troubleshoot it was George who not only knew what the precise code was for the alarm Armstrong was hearing, he knew exactly what caused it and that it posed no threat to the landing.

The problem? The LM return radar switch was open and the computer was trying to solve an algorithm outside of the expected parameters causing the memory to overflow capacity and force a reset alarm. The landing radar was unaffected so NASA gave the GO for landing.

Silver had seen this in hardware testing, so soon after the alarm he and MIT had an answer for MC.

106 There is quite a bit of Nasa archival footage put together on YouTube, that can be watched at your leisure. Some of these have been edited by civilian space nuts into some pretty interesting documentaries.

The odds of Apollo 8 were considered about 50/50 making it back, iirc. This wasn't stated publicly. I agree Lovell and the rest of the crew - Borman, Anders, were some real pioneers. Apollo 10 went so far as to undock and make a dry run. Nasa purposefully didn't install enough fuel to make a landing, there was at least a possibility they would just go ahead and land for the hell of it, this prevented them from doing so, just in case. I think it was 15 that had a pretty hard landing. If they rolled it upon landing, they were screwed. Stuck on the Moon. Can you imagine? The ascent engines contained hypergolic fuel - two chemicals mixed together. So corrosive, the engines couldn't ever be tested, except on the Moon. So they had to work, or they were stuck. Grumman made the lunar module, in Haupagge, New York.

There was a bit of oddity. One of the missions reported hearing music - both the command module pilot and lunar module pilots - on the dark side of the Moon. No, it wasn't Pink Floyd. They all commented on it, thought it was REALLY weird, and figured nobody would believe them. It's in the transcripts. No recording of the "music" has been forthcoming.

All thise guys were real heroes, and some really smart guys on the ground made it possible too. "SCE to AUX". Bet that guy never needed to buy a beer ever again.

149 "The ascent engines contained hypergolic fuel - two chemicals mixed together."

If I'm remembering correctly, all of the engines in the LM and SM were hypergolics exclusively.

There's a little anecdote in the book _Chariots for Apollo_ about a new engineer going to the propulsion development department. A grizzled old chemist set up a glass Mason jar with these two propellants ready to mix, and placed it carefully on an old piece of WWII surplus armor plate. Then retired to a safe distance and let 'er rip.

Then gave the new guy the armor plate, with a circle the size of the Mason jar punched through it, as neatly as an office hole punch going through a sheet of 8.5x11 paper.

170 I was young. I remember the actual moonwalk of 11 was getting late, CST. Maybe 1030? Needed permission to stay up I recall that. And being told to shutup by Dad, at certsin key moments LOL

I also recall the feeling of optomism that oervaded our culture. Younger people have been robbed of this by leftist agitators in academia and popular culture. There was a feeling that Americans could "git er done" and this was reflected in a confidence in our institutions and corporations, that new technologies could help solve our problems and make our lives easier.

ALL of that is long gone, replaced with hysteria and neurotics dragging everyone down to their level. Pessimism is contagious, too. So is depression. The idea is to induce insanity in the populace. If you hadn't noticed, it's working.

Consider a flag flown for 40-50 years on Earth. There would be nothing left but tattered strips of cloth. They would still have some color though.

Both flags would suffer from continuous exposure to the elements. They're just different elements.

188 Love that Kipling poem. Think I had to memorize his poem The Ballad Of East And West in high school.

So I don't know much about his life and start reading parts of his biography on Wikipedia -- and I come across this:

["The [recently married] couple [26-year-old Kipling and 29-year old Carrie Balestier] settled upon a honeymoon that would take them first to the United States (including a stop at the Balestier family estate near Brattleboro, Vermont) ..."

Huh. I'd never heard of Battleboro, VT until Mary The Sock's comments here -- thought it might be a fictional place.

207 The Russkies were the first to send pictures back from the far side of the moon. They had a string of impressive firsts for a little while. The pictures weren't very good by the standards of today, but they did show that the far side is quite different than the side we normally see. Because of the way the Moon and Earth rotate, until a probe was sent to photograph the other side (it's not really dark) no human had ever seen it! That side of the Moon is never presented to us.

What was interesting to me about the Russian probe - it used American film, that they had recovered from US spy satellites. The film was developed inside the probe, and then scanned, with the images radio'd back to Earth, sort of like a FAX.

They all commented on it, thought it was REALLY weird, and figured nobody would believe them. It's in the transcripts. No recording of the "music" has been forthcoming.

This is not that, but I've heard that during the first moon landing, the BBC had Pink Floyd live in the studio to accompany the NASA video feed for the viewers.

pretty sure the beeps are for blind people, or visually impaired. It may have something to do with guide dogs - not sure - but they used to just lead their human when everyone else started crossing (before beeps) but maybe they figured some people start crossing before they're s'posed to

337 It's likely that exposure to unfiltered UV rays from the Sun would have bleached out the dyes in the flag. But the flag would be intact.

Consider a flag flown for 40-50 years on Earth. There would be nothing left but tattered strips of cloth. They would still have some color though.

Both flags would suffer from continuous exposure to the elements. They're just different elements.

Posted by: rickl at July 20, 2017 10:34 PM (sdi6R)

Unfiltered UV can break down many plastics, so if the flag contained synthetic fiber, it may have crumbled. But with no wind to disturb it, it might remain whole until touched. But if the vendor had been contracted to supply a UV-resistant flag, it may still be in good shape. Going to take a return visit to know, I guess.

338 328. Yep. First time is momentous, second time is wonderful. Third time, it becomes routine.

340 So, here's the deal with my work situation:

I do bookkeeping for my work. Nothing too extensive, other than making sure money is in the account and bills are paid. I have other duties as well, not related to the bookkeeping side of it, but for this part of it, that's what I do.

So, yesterday, my supervisor came to me, and said the boss was wanting her to take a more proactive role in evaluating overhead and spending trends in order to decide on adding personnel, raises, price increases, etc. So, she was wanting me to sit down with her and show her some of the basics. In the meantime, she was going to meet with our outside accountant. Okay fine.

Anyway, today outside accountant calls her back, and she excuses herself to take said phone call in a private room, and shuts the door, when she and I are the only two people in the office. So, now I'm feeling really paranoid. If it has nothing to do with me, I cannot imagine why her conversation would be so hush hush.

I would never do anything underhanded in my position, and loyalty is a big deal to me. So, to feel not trusted goes a long way in making me feel really rotten.

I used to think that. Now I think we went too soon. We weren't ready, we spent Sagan's of cash to beat Ivan to a photo op. It simply cost far too much with 1960s tech to put a pound of vehicle on the moon to ever be practical. Yet because we HAD done it, it sapped all the enthusiasm out of the low Earth orbit stuff we could actually do. Going to the Moon too soon seems to have set back the effort to actually become a space faring species.

We needed to be building space stations, learning how to live in space, how to launch craft from a space station into lunar orbit, etc. Maybe even put a station in lunar orbit and run a transit route between the stations, etc. Build out some infrastructure. And if we had all that stuff built and tested, kicking a mission to Mars off from one of them would be a lot more plausible.

That's great, when the crosswalks are synced to the lights. But when they're not...

In my city, the "Don't Walk" countdown appearing does not necessarily mean that the light is about to change. In fact, at more than one intersection, you can wait until the crosswalk stops flashing "Don't Walk", hit the button, and watch the sign change to "Walk" without the light changing even once.

It's been that way for a couple of decades.

Should they try to stare you down keep looking right at them, keep honking, maybe even start honking your favorite song. Whatever, but pound that horn like it owes you.

You're forgetting one thing -

It *HAD* to be done.

Like it or not, we were in a race with the Soviets. Whoever got to the Moon first got a big propaganda boost. The alternative to not getting involved in the space race was letting the Soviets win a huge propaganda victory. We beat them to the Moon, and we got a big propaganda boost for what was, essentially, dirt cheap compared to things like Vietnam.

And the US space program didn't come to a halt after the Moon landings. The Space Shuttle was The Next Big Thing!(tm). Meanwhile, the Dems were starting to question why we were "wasting" money on the space program when we could instead be using it to help feed the poor (never mind that you could easily fit one hundred space programs into the government's welfare programs).

However many more "walk" seconds until the opposite light goes yellow, a few more until red, and then it goes to green for my direction. I think Musk's plan is to launch all of the equipment needed to go to the moon on seperate launches and assemble them in Earth orbit.

First launch the engine pod, then the fuel pod, then the supply pod, then the crew pod, and then finally the re-entry vehicle with the crew in it.

431 You're forgetting one thing -

When the OJ Bronco chase happened, I thought, WTF? So weird, I got psychologically entangled with it.

I subscribed to cable to get CourtTV, and I VCR'd every day of the prosecution portion of the trial, then I'd FF through the BS to the salient parts.

By the time they sent it to Defense, I was sated. The State, quite simply, had screwed their own case. Never mind if the jury was just biased or not, O.J. DESERVED to be found "not guilty" in the original trial. They. Did. Not. Prove. Their Case.

Which, of course, says *nothing* about whether he did it or not. Just that I would've voted "not guilty," too, based on the evidence presented, and mis-presented, in court.

Classic case of legal malpractice on the part of all parties.

I had long known that a candidate who in no uncertain terms told the big media outlets to get bent would do very, very well. The pubbies would never, ever do that. Inexplicable. Then it dawned on me, they don't want to win. Why would they? The pay is the same. At virtually every level of government, the people in charge are like ... pod people or whatever. Like they are hand selected to look good, mumble the right platitudes, provide a power point presentation, but they don't do anything. That's their real job - to take up space, and prevent competent people from doing the job, and doing it well. This is particularly disturbing in matters of say, public health, and national defense. 484 Don't know, but the carrier would have to submerge to below bridge level to float them off.

I note that the lower level is a barge. Perhaps they float that off, then use *huge* cranes?

I suppose that they could partially submerge, then pick them off with cranes.

487 A couple of you have pissed on W. I had a lot of problems with his policies. How he didn't fight the war in Iraq hard enough, the whole religion of peace BS, Medicaid RX and assorted other shit that he did.

However, he was a class act, and he had a very good wit. Acknowledging that shouldn't be a bad thing, even if it was used against him and just because you disagree with other things that he did and just because he isn't on your imaginary "team". That's the modus operandi of the Left.

Don't be like the Left.

489 I always loved the Apollo 11 episode of that HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon." Before the launch there's an astronaut party and I think it was the Apollo 8 crew and the Apollo 11 crew and they're talking about the first words, and they were bitching about some atheist whining about them reading scripture during their orbit of the moon. They also say to Neil that if he had any balls his first words should be "OH GOD WHAT IS THAT" and then cut his mic.

But along with that you've got them asking Armstrong about if he'd vote for his fellow Ohioan and astronaut John Glenn if he ran for president. The response is "That depends, who's running for king?" I think that if those words are actually true it would say something about Armstrong's opinion on Glenn's politics or at least his opinion on Glenn's political ambitions.

490 "Living in space." We will never live in space, except in the imagination of scifi writers. Why? Because it is very hostile out there. I can understand mining the moon or asteroids (with robots). But humans colonizing Mars... you go first. Its a one way ticket livig underground to escape cosmic radiation and you will get thristy fast. Its like San Francisco. There is no there there.

492 I expect Martian or Lunar colonies, would be underground, in the near term, for sure. But many people here on Earth live out their lives scarcely going outdoors.
As long as you had regular resupply of essential goods, living underground on Mars would not necessarily be horrible.

494 WD, Thanks for the reminder about the first moon landing. I was 16 and watched every minute of live coverage. (I kind of miss that multi-ton RCA console TV.) I marveled at the usable pictures and the excellent sound coming from the moon. I can still see the NASA engineers and managers in their short sleeve white dress shirts (do they still make those?) and the earphones they all wore, each at their station staring at their screens. Don't know why, but I had my slide rule with me during the coverage and a map, probably From National Geographic, of the moon.

It's easy to recall the fear and suspense at different points of the mission and the vast relief when they landed safely and were able to lift off to dock with the capsule in lunar orbit, not a sure thing. This was all theory and experimental. The dangers of the Apollo program were well known.

I don't remember how long the unbroken news coverage went but I was awake for all of it. Towards the end I had the coffee pot working overtime so I didn't miss any of it.

And yes, I still have the slide rule.

If they are empty hulls, as yet unfitted with engines and other stuff, temporarily flooding them would do no harm.

With Apollo, the space toilet for #2 was basically a plastic bag you taped to your ass, so that explains the problems with letting one get loose.

They've probably spent no telling how much money developing a zero-g toilet. The Shuttle had one, and the first generations were faulty. They had to redesign things for female womyns, too.

Anyway, it's a vacuum contraction. Peeing is done in a funnel thing, with a tube. That's what had they to redesign for the women. The shitter is basically a hole, with suction, that goes into a bag that allows gas to get through, but not solid or liquid (supposedly).

In the first generations, there was a terrible odor problem.

They're working on a next generation one for the Orion system.

yeah that was my guess. seems like what they use on the rivers in europe. sinkning them to get them on the barge seem like waste.
Posted by: yankeefifth at July 21, 2017 12:55 AM (

The LASH concept was to haul the lighters/barges from one river port to another across an intervening ocean. IIRC, late 80s or early 90s, ESA shipped some spacecraft tooling from Europe to Marshall Space Flight Center by lighter from the factory to either Bremerhaven or Antwerp, LASH across the Atlantic to either Mobile or NOLA, then towed up the river(s), ultimately the Tennessee, to Marshall. Think they had a mad scramble to certify a dock that hadn't been used since Apollo days to offload the barge. Or they used a pier that was actually owned by the Army.

587 A couple of you have pissed on W.

Posted by: Weirddave at July 21, 2017 12:48 AM (0otiP)

I have to disagree with you on this - especially on the part about allegedly being like the Left. W was a doormat. That's fine for his own personal dealings but when he represents people and leads a group his being a doormat affects them and the policies they desire.

Bush did a few things correct and he was very good under pressure but he made a ton of mistakes and, quite frankly, was the one most responsible for bringing this nation to the point that an America-hating retard like Barky could be elected. Bush's 2nd term was a total disaster. He veered left and merrily pushed all sorts of crap.

he was a globalist who was part and parcel of McShame's 2006-2007 push to give aid and comfort to invading illegals. He did absolutely nothing to even make pretend he wanted operative borders after 9/11 and he didn't do shit about Iran - even when he knew that Barky was going to take over and lay us all out for the mullahs. Bush also let people sitting in his cabinet basically endorse Barky (WTF kind of shit was that) and never said a bad word about Barky even though Barky called Bush every name in the book and laid the blame for everything that had happened since the dawn of time on Bush. But, the minute Trump appeared to be a viable candidate Bush stopped his silence and started muttering shit about Trump.

I have no respect for Bush. He did tons of damage. He was pathetic in the War on Terror, doing only the absolute minimum and doing it as poorly as one possibly could. And his second term - jettisoning advice from sane people to rely more on Condi Rice and others with strong leftist bents - was a total disaster.

Bush came into Washington with the GOP holding both houses of Congress and the White House and left with the GOP being a pariah to all.

We're looking back from more than a decade in the future and applying our new standards to the past. With women in space, this is something that is going to happen. It has been studied, and yep, it's been done. But we don't know which woman was the first. That's private information.

Some women elect to take the hormones to stop the cycle for the duration of the flight. Others let it go.

615 I disagree (Christ, I'm defending W). Bush was the last example of the old world. Barky using full force Alinsky tactics was something new to the American body politic.

I assume you mean Barky's actions after he slimed into office. He didn't use ALinsky tactics. Barky just had not one iota of American sensibilities about him, hated America and brought the attitude of a foreigner to American politics. Of course, this was easily predictable. I, and many others, were screaming that that was what was coming from back int he campaign, the primary and the general. Barky was distinctly un-American (he was raised in Indonesia, after all) and he showed that. He wasn't burdened by many of the unconscious limits that an actual American would have. Clinton and Shrillary wished they could have shoved their socialized health care through in the 90s but they were still bound to stop, not by choice but because that was the American part of their personality that wouldn't let them. They would have loved to do what Barky did ... but only a foreigner (in personality and world view) would even think to do things like Barky did. Of course, that's why the Founders demanded that a natural born citizen be President and that's why people should have AT LEAST demanded that Barky's eligibility be settled in court one way or the other.

It wasn't alinsky that dictated Barky's political tactics. It was Indonesia.

We're looking back from more than a decade in the future and applying our new standards to the past. Yes, I'll admit that looking back we can see clearly how we got here from there, and W was a big reason why, but W didn't have that luxury. He was playing by the old rules.

No. I said all of this same stuff in 2008. And 2009. And 2010. ...

I'm sorry Dave but I just don't accept your excuses for Bush. Bush was a globalist, which is a major, serious strike against him. That has nothing to do with old world manners or anything. In fact, the idea of national sovereignty is very old world. The idea of globalism is not. And that is only the tip of the problems that Bush brought with his second term.

Bush did very well in his first term, under the circumstances, but he was finished after that and should never have run for the second term. What he did in that second four years was absolutely ridiculous. He made one decent try to reform social security and after that fell through he went full-force leftwards and managed to get everyone to hate the GOP. EVERYONE. That's how the most detested person in the GOP - perhaps the most detested, ever - ended up as the 2008 nominee.

617 today is my birthday. today i also had to keep the hospital from transferring my mom to a PIT of hell and get research going on long term acute care facilities near dad. she always manages to ruin my birthday. this time she didnt mean to, but had nothing and everything to do with it.

i think i found an acceptable place with violations along the lines of "the food there is tasteless and unappetizing" (zero impact, she is being fed IV) that is right across from where we used to have her mom in assisted living, and we loved the place, and its walking across the parking lot from where dad already gets coffee every morning. hopefully no bad surprises and this works.

having mom almost-die a week ago has been a lot of work. i just got that awesome colt on the ground and i am expecting another in a week. i feel like i am riding a roller coaster and i am going to throw up. on the good side i found out the outdoor Nest Cams work beautifully for watching for foals and i can get people to spell me watching so i can bathe or sleep for periods without worry. now the evil empire knows where the horses are, but i gotta admit its nice to be able to go in the AC and be able watch and hear like you are right there. Additional perk is i can show mom BABY CAM! thats a big morale booster when you are stuck in a critical care unit.

Hmmphh. THis "periods in space" thing was a big fucking deal for NASA, it turns out. There was a worry, a real worry, that the blood would just pool up, not flowing out right, and could cause bad problems.

According to the history, the women thought that was stupid, just these male doctors and engineers not knowing how it works. The women were sure it would come out correctly.

But there was only one way to know for sure, and that was for a woman to do it. And do it one did, and it turned out they were right. It would come out normally.

So that's some space history they don't talk about it much.

628 Frank Borman became ill on a mission, both vomit and diahrea. It was by all accounts not pleasant. NASA has a webpage on waste elimination, the early missions were problematic. They ate a "low residue" diet starting a couple days prior. That might be part of the reason they traditionally have steak and eggs for breakfast on launch day.

Urination was one thing, but dropping a deuce was a problem. Took about 45 minutes to an hour. They basically would tape a plastic bag to their ass. But... (heh) in the weightlessness of space, the fecal matter needs encouragement to leave the AO. Then they had to knead the bag thoroughly after breaking open some chemical pack inside the bag, a germicidal so the contents wouldn't ferment and explode later on in the mission. Nice, huh?

While descending, Neil Armstrong gives a bunch of navigational directions., Then, with 15 feet to go to the surface, he briefly falls silent so he can concentrate on the controls during the actual touchdown. Then, right after a nice soft landing, Aldrin radios that they did NOT crash land, as feared, but instead had a "light" landing, and that he was now turning off the engines. Full dialog:

"Contact light. OK, engine stop. Houston, uh, Tranquility Base here: the Eagle has landed."

Not actually sure who -- Armstrong or Aldrin -- said which part.

(heh) in the weightlessness of space, the fecal matter needs encouragement to leave the AO. Then they had to knead the bag thoroughly after breaking open some chemical pack inside the bag, a germicidal so the contents wouldn't ferment and explode later on in the mission. Nice, huh?

The flags are presumed to be bleached white.

The LRO (orbiter) imaged the Apollo landing sites back in 2011. The resolution wasn't high enough to make out the details, but you could see the flag assemblies in some of them still standing. So something is still standing.

The Apollo 11 flag, unfortunately, was blown over by the ascent stage engine blast. They planted it too close. So after that, they started planting them further away.

They've done a lot of work from the images, and they confirmed Apollo 11's flag was blown over as Aldrin reported.

The mechanism on Apollo 12's flag was faulty -- the vertical arm to hold it out wouldn't lock in place, so it just had to hang down.

640 I assumed "contact light" meant that an indicator light was illuminated?

It was 15, I think where they landed hard enough to prang the descent engine bell, the pilot said "bang!", and it was at a pretty good landing. Lots of dust kicked up. Spatial cues are weird on earth even, at times it's tough to gauge altitude. Anyway, it seems to me they came close to rolling the LM... which would of course been total disaster. Which leads me to wonder. If that had happened, would they have tried to somehow right the craft? Could they? What a nightmare that would have been.

That's a good question. I, conversely, have always been under the impression that "Contact light" meant "(Our) contact (on the surface was) light," i.e. "We successfully made a light/soft landing."

But perhaps your version is correct -- perhaps he's merely saying "I see the little light on the panel indicating that contact with the surface has been achieved."

Anybody know the definitive answer of what was meant by "Contact light?"

If you dare, with some searching you read all the poop on shitting in space, and why they did things the way they did them. Turns out, liquids were easy to vent to space, but solids weren't so easy. They've exposed solids to vacuum to dry them out and all that.

On the ISS, they do throw the dried turds overboard, I believe.

The Apollo shitting procedure was a mess. They would usually strip butt naked to keep from getting anything on their clothes. Then tape the shit bag to their ass and do it.

They say the other astronauts, right in their next to them, would get as far away as possible, and try not to look.

They had what they called a "finger tube" to aid in dislodging any stubborn material.....

The whole thing would take up to an hour to do.

644 One thing that's weird, the moon looks small from earth, because the earth is so much bigger. So I'd expect the earth to look positively huge from the surface of the moon. It doesn't of course, but I'm not sure why. Those pictures in LIFE magazine when they first came out were part of growing up in the 60s. Anders probably took the '68 shot, that is pretty much iconic. The first humans to leave earth, just incredible still.

Contact light indeed meant an indicator light went off. THe landing pods had little feelers on the bottom, little probes. When they hit lunar soil, it would trigger the light telling them they'd made contact and to shut off the engine.

You would need a little ramrod to jam the bag up snug against the outside door. When the outside door opened, air trapped inboard of the bag would force it out, and if the bag ruptured, it would rupture on the outside.

You could test this in a vacuum chamber on Earth.

There's a mountain in one of the areas they are at, but there's nothing to gauge how high it is. No reference points in the photos. From casually looking at it, guess maybe it's a couple thousand feet. Turns out it's something like 15,000 feet - waaay out of scale to what my eyes were at first telling me. They really tried to focus on landing in interesting areas geologically speaking later on, whereas the first missions emphasized landing in as flat an area as possible.

Sure, taking the scientific approach there are plenty of possibilities.

On that one what happened to the ships? Or technology generally? My recollection is that folks hated the ending to the recent Battlestar Galactica series because their answer to the question was, at least emotionally, unsatisfactory. I mean if you identify the great filter (in this case the Cylons) and take steps to prevent it from occurring, surely you take steps to explain to your progeny why you did what you did, and preserving that record if *the most important thing* in your new civilization.

Even if the landing was accidental and generally catastrophic, some stuff would have survived with whichever people did. And presumably the 'How to start from scratch in case reentry goes sideways" manuals would be in a priority safety location with the passengers.

Additionally, if we're the aliens on earth, were we the only colonists from wherever? I doubt that is likely, as it would mean the filter happened just as (within the time required to build another colony ship) the colony ship launched. So where are the other colonies? If we were the first to land, that sort of implies earth is closest to the point of origin (alternatively, every earlier ship failed), in which case, how have we not identified it? If we weren't the first to get started, then the other colonies are older and should be detectable.

Or at least that's my off the cuff, 2am take on it.

Posted by: Methos at July 21, 2017 03:27 AM (3Liv/)

677
Yeah, on Apollo 17's landing site, the Earth was the lowest in the sky of any of the missions, and that allowed them to get that shot of Cernan (and some of Schmitt) with the Earth visible.

Now, the view of the Earth from the Moon. The Moon is in tide lock, of course, keeping the same face to the Earth. So the Earth doesn't move (much...) in the sky from a given spot on the Moon.

The Earth does however, go through phases, just the opposite of the Moon from Earth. Full Moon = New Earth, and New Moon = Full Earth.

Because of the complexities of the orbit, which you can look up, the Earth will move around a little bit in the sky as it goes through its phases.

No. Bush's globalism is much deeper than this. It is a refutation of the notion of nation.

And what you call "free trade" I would prefer be called "open economic borders" because it has absolutely nothing to do with trade. It's only about allowing everyone else to import or come in and participate in our economy. It has pretty much never led to us being able to do the same in theirs, and no one who has pushed for it has ever even wanted that.

So ... I wouldn't accept the stipulation with that caveat. The globalists are very interested in doing away with the concept of the sovereign nation.

Having only traveled in Italy, and in the northern part of the country (which is essentially where most of the money is) I can only describe my experience to that extent. Trains were generally clean, fast (especially the Freccia Trains) and more or less on time. Europe is more condensed than North America and so cities and regions are very interconnected. The wife used a toilet at one of the stations in Cinque Terre (Vernazza or Cornigilia) and she was floored how immaculate it was.

Florence isn't north-north, like Lake Como or Trentino, etc. It's Tuscany which has more of an Italian identity as opposed to the very north of the country which has more in common culturally to Switzerland and Austria.

Awesome stuff. We tend to forget there was a real fear of a crash landing. The exclamations of relief, news anchors wiping tears of joy and disbelief from their eyes. Damn. I think it was ABC (watched them all in a row, kind of blending together in my mind) that showed the huge crowds at places like JFK airport and Disneyland, all eyes transfixed on the TV screens.

Don't read the comments, they're full of conspiracy tards.
