53 This is David in his inter-politics phase. He escaped execution with Robespierre and St. Just, and spent some time in prison. Just before Napoleon takes over, he enters a period of mild portraiture and general history painting. Here you can see the influences of Rome that still affect French culture, which Napoleon will exploit and adopt. Compare this portrait with one of Bonaparte's sister by Canova:

It suddenly occurs to me that "breakfast in bed" is about the only phrase that can't be turned dirty by adding "in bed", because adding "in bed" doesn't work and just saying it more suggestively doesn't really work either.

Posted by: Under Fire at July 19, 2017 09:50 AM (mcI77)

107 The tall thing is a candle stand, the low table is indeed a stand for the chamber pot or a wash basin stand for "female cleanliness" There were no "bathrooms" in this time frame and the carpets could not be cleaned easily. The painting is more "suggestive" with it's addition. In those days if a female guest at a dinner party or fancy dance "had to go" they would retire to a side room with this type of furniture and a servant who would help to hold and wipe so the lady would not have to get out of her dress.

The people who don't harass look at them and say "Fuck you. it isn't like I'd sit back and let somebody get hurt in public. Fuck that noise, and fuck the whiners who want it. I hate these asswipes who tell me what to do so they can feel good."

The people who would harass anyone in public look at hem and say "Fuck you. I'll treat people how I like and fuck 'em. Dipshit asswipe whiners."

The one thing that unites both groups is that they think the people who put them up are asswipes. And in that they are correct.

It would be funnier if it were moved to the late 18th century, and mentioned that early settlers in the Ohio valley were so afraid of Indian raids in the early settling period, before they got good defenses in, they were leery of starting fires to keep warm since the Indians would track them by the smoke, so they would capture a type of prairie chicken, (now extinct because of their innate tameness) and sleep with them as a sort of hot water bottle to keep from freezing;

so the term "surrounded by heath hens" was born

For me, great art needs passion of some type. Love, hate, political, whatever. He was a political animal--it's all he knew. I heard someone describe him as a better propagandist than Albert Speer. I agree. If you look at his post-Napoleon work though, while his skill is still masterful, there's something missing. His paintings seem dry and emotionless. The double-losses of the Jacobins and Bonaparte, along with exile from his beloved France, destroyed what made David David.

Do they expect me to peek in on the homes of professional athletes on a fixed schedule to make sure Mrs. Jock isn't getting whupped on for burning the meatloaf again?

288 Just like those stupid, stupid, oh, so stupid "domestic violence" ads the NFL was running...

Who is that for, exactly?

Are they implying I beat my (non-existent) wife?

Are they implying it's somehow my fault that some dumb 'roided up meathead jock goes all ribbed-sleeveless-white-cotton-shirt on a regular basis?

Do they expect me to peek in on the homes of professional athletes on a fixed schedule to make sure Mrs. Jock isn't getting whupped on for burning the meatloaf again?

What exactly do they mean by asking me to "help end domestic violence?"

What is the message here?

Can I just watch the damn game in peace for once?

No wonder their ratings suck.

We had a "white ribbon" thing on domestic violence here a while ago. I am one of those who would like to batter people who hit their spouses. At one point, I had quite a lot of (physical, emotional, verbal) provocation to engage in a bit of that myself, but , like, you don't hit girls because its unfair and gross and that's that. I think most guys are like that, but not all are, and if you want to fund raise and bring the issue out into publicm, that's good and I can get behind that.

What I hated about the campaign was that people kept asking me to buy a fucking ribbon to (and I QUOTE) "show that I was against domestic violence", and I kept thinking "So, if I don't buy one, I'm FOR it? Screw that noise. Fuck you, get your ribbon out of my face."

Fenelon was never surrounded by heat hens or heathens. He was at one time surrounded by Protestants so whatever term is appropriate for 17th century Protestant (Huguenots) would work. ;^) Cardinal Bousset sent Fenelon to the most troubled area of France-the heavily Protestant districts of Poitou and Saintogue. There was persecution and confusion and rebellion (Louis XIV had revoked the Edict of Nantes which protected Protestants) Fenelon stipulated that no troops would accompany him, but he would go as a work of mercy and peace. Both the Protestants and Catholics were impressed by his way of handling the assignment, and it was said that though the Protestants were not converted they were charmed by his character and grudgingly he may've won their esteem and respect.

That was more than you probably wanted to know about Fenelon, I bet. :^)

My position was kind of "no need to pile on, but I expect he will crash and burn on his own."

315 "Investigators probing the death of an Australian woman who was fatally shot by Minneapolis police officers over the weekend said Tuesday that the officers were 'startled by a loud sound' near their patrol car right before the shooting.

"The two officers were driving through an alley near the home of Justine Damond, 40, after she called 911 late Saturday to report a possible assault, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the state agency investigating the shooting. The officer who was driving the patrol car told investigators that right after the loud noise, Damond approached the car on his side. The officer who was in the passenger seat then fatally shot Damond through the driver's side window, according to investigators."

So there's a loud noise that may or may not have resembled a gun shot, victim approaches driver's widow and begins talking to driver, shooter reaches across driver to shoot victim. It's looking more and more like this is either 1) sudden jihad syndrome in which muzzie can't abide improperly dressed immodest woman, 2) affirmative actioned grossly incompetent cop, or 3) both.

325 Hmm - the poster was "mynewhandle" which isn't very enlightening:

Maybe I'm giving Trump too much credit, but I think he knows exactly what he's doing here.

And maybe it's because I'm in sales and have to go through these dumb sales trainings all the time, but he seems to be using a lot of sales methods on people -- where you say something that suggests an answer -- kind of get people to decide something (carly is ugly) "on their own" even though you never said that.

And the "classiest, best, greatest" verse "loser, low energy, horrible guy" stuff is classic salesmanship.

So, again, maybe I'm giving Trump too much credit here, but to me he seems to be treating this election as a sales presentation.

for those of you not in sales, think about the pick up artist type shit. He's "negging" a lot of people, but not outright saying things that can be used in soundbites or thrown back in his face.

"What? All I said was look at her face. You're the whacko who thought I called her ugly. Your word, not mine."

"Heh? All I said was "wherever". You're the sicko who took that to mean "vagina""

The story behind that work is great. He was driving along with his family and happened to look over at a sleepy little village in the middle of nowhere. He stops the car, gets the camera out and snaps the picture all in a period of about two minutes. There's no time to test the lighting and other camera functions before the effect is lost. It became a masterpiece with almost no darkroom manipulation. Wow.

To quote David Bowie, I think we're all going through ch ch ch changes. These are extraordinary times and we are mere mortal. Well, not Kate Upton but the rest of us.

By the way, David Gergen asks why Trump is so obsessed with Putin? Gosh, Davey, I'm not sure it's Trump who is obsessed with "Raz" Putin.

Possibly relevant, I'm currently obsessed with Watchmen, movie and graphic novel (which is cool the way Kindle does it). I think they made a movie in which Veidt is the hero and Kovacks is the villain but I'm watching a movie in which Veidt is the villain and Kovacks is the hero. Or maybe it's just nihilism. Or maybe they're saying that the world is a complex place without clear cut heroes and villains. It's like a Rohrschach ink blot test. (Snort)

I see a pretty butterfly.

This is a perfect storm for the left. Muslim cop and POC shoots white liberal anti-gun New Age Aussie woman. Not a "deplorable" Trump voting cracka, who would have deserved it in their eyes, but one of their own. And she's from one of those enlightened countries that don't have a 2nd Amendment.

What to do, what to do? Hmmmm. My guess is that in the end the white woman gets tossed under the bus. Because Muslim trumps everything.

429 You could see Trump winning if he could mostly keep Romney's states and get 5% better turnout than Romney with white non-college (the biggest cohort of all, by far), enough to swing the Rust Belt.

Posted by: Ignoramus at July 19, 2017 11:16 AM (+7/1f)

Yes, the way I looked at it, to win, the Republican had to take all the Romney states (not necessarily a given, but the way to bet) and then turn at least 3 Obama states - pretty much Florida, Ohio, and one other.

If you looked at the candidates we had and their ability to flip Obama states, Trump actually was the logical answer.

The thing is, Vox Day appears to be an utter fraud, the quintessential emperor without clothes. If you watch his "Darkstream" videos online, he's nothing more than a pudgy, balding, muttering rambler, whose self-described MENSA IQ takes five or six roundabout minutes to deliver a single sentence's worth of thought. But he commands an army of adolescents like him poised to deliver very mean if crudely photoshopped cartoons to your Twitter feed. Man, coulda used those brave men in Helmand.

I think that business model is pure genius. They hand out lump sums (at a steep discount, I'm sure) and assume the long-term receipts. There is a legitimate need for that service, I'm sure, but I'd guess the majority of people going to them are folks who can't manage a budget and think the lump sum will solve all their problems.

439 My view at the time was Candidate Trump was the only one that could best Felonia von Pantsuit. The GOPe was playing failure theater - recall that Jeb Bush was the favored son, the designated loser, with Mark O'Rubio playing plan B from Outer Space. And Governor Catshit as running mate, perhaps - or that firebrand John Huntsman.

My only "concern" was the level of democrat voter fraud, legendary since the 1960s. There was an undercurrent of concern from the usual suspects. Whatever it is that makes the standard issue Republican roll over for fraudulent elections, Mr. Trump wasn't playing that shit. That's why they pointedly asked him if he would "accept" the results of the election were he to lose. Meaning, will he raise a fuss if it were stolen? And they all got the vapors. Can you believe this shit?

Democrats stealing elections is "our democracy".

Mentioned this before, but after CO announced they would cooperate with Voter Integrity commission, 3,400 people withdrew themselves from the voter rolls in 5 days. Apparently this freaked the DNC so much they've taken action to get the state party officials to stop it somehow. Can only imagine how many fraudulent/illegal voter registrants are on the rolls if over 3K took action immediately.

448 National Hot Dog Day!

Go Hebrew National, or go home.

Posted by: flounder, rebel, vulgarian, deplorable, winner at July 19, 2017 11:09 AM (tbOMB)

I love hot dogs, and have tried them all over the country. And I don't mean methods of preparation (which are very regional), but rather the brands themselves (which are also very regional, and vary greatly in taste and texture).

I used to like Sinai 48's, until Ballpark bought them and shut them down. Vienna Beef is good, and a major player in Chicago, but unavailable where I live now. There are some other good natural casing hot dogs from Chicago, but again they are only locally distributed. I have always wanted to try some of the brands that I see are made in Michigan, but don't know anyone who lives there and am not getting on a plane to make the purchase myself. Local brands, mostly made by Cloverdale Foods, are awful; the flavor is so weird I suspect them of putting in cinnamon or nutmeg. Hebrew National is definitely the best mass market hot dog available in local stores, although I just discovered a natural casing hot dog made for Trader Joe's that is very good in both taste and texture.

In conclusion, always remember Harry Callahan's famous admonition "Nobody, I mean NOBODY, puts ketchup on a hot dog!"

Well I was for Cruz from the get go but it become obvious pretty fast that he was not going to get the nomination and I switch to Trump since I believed he was the only one with a chance to beat The FAB and I also believed he was NOT a closet Left winger, or a member of the KKK, or an anti-semite, or an Fascist, or all the other things he was accused of. And I switched about 1/2 way thru the primaries.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at July 19, 2017 11:32 AM (SjImc)

450 When Trump announced I knew next to nothing about him other than the typical checkout line headlines. I went Googleing around and two stories from long ago caught my eye as things which went to his character.

In one he was said to have loaned the use of his jet to the NY Reagan for President group so they could get the papers to get Reagan on the ballot to Albany on time. That's just my memory of what I read as is the next.

In the other Trump was being driven through NYC in his limo and saw a guy being attacked by another guy with a baseball bat. He ordered his driver to stop and got out and stopped the attack and berated the attacker with "What do you think you are doing, stop it."

These stories were from well before the present day and had named sources/witnesses.

These two and others I found later painted the picture of a man that I could support as President. One who would fight for what I consider American principles/values.

453 A key component for me - there was a flurry of anti Trump information in the media and internet, plus a lot of "muhuhuhahaha" amongst the lefty commentariat. "Do it! do it! I'll send you money!" I did have a brief, very very brief moment of doubt. But instinctively I knew to watch... just watch. I know these people.

The usual suspects started screaming like wounded Eagles. They are the perfect contrarian indicator. If all the lefty twatwaffles are against someone with the passion of a thousand burning suns, then I have no doubt he is a good guy.
