I don't think there is technically a "national drinking age" even today; what actually happened in '84 was that the federal government announced that it would withhold federal highway funds from any state that didn't raise its drinking age to 21, so all the states immediately scrambled to do so. Withholding federal money has since become a favorite tactic of Uncle Sam in trying to get its way in matters where states have ultimate jurisdiction.

"Today is Monday, July 17, 2017. On this day in 1984
the national drinking age in the United States was changed back from 18 to 21 due to pressure from MADD. It had been changed to 18 since you could be drafted at 18. And before that it was set by the individual States as they saw fit. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party" Ohio had a referendum on raising the drinking age because so many we're opposed and it was voted overwhelming to \keep it 18 , something like 70%. However the federal govt was blackmailing states that did not comply by withholding highway funds. State legislators eventually submitted and raised the drinking age as directed by their masters. This happened under Reagan, a huge disappointment. Don't recall where Reagan stood but MADD had the whole country whipped into a frenzy. Posted by: Ripley at July 17, 2017 07:35 AM (MxEKc) 119

Positive thinking is not bs, IMO, in this sense. If you think you have the ability to overcome things and think about positive things, that's good. What the problem is-from my perspective as a person of faith-is "going forth on your own power" only gets you so far-that you sputter out like a car without gas. Both the Old and New Testament assert that God is in control and that God gives power to the weak and strengthens the powerless. For Christians we are given the Holy Spirit at both our baptisms and/ or Confirmation when we affirmed Jesus is Lord of our lives and we can ask for a fresh indwelling of the Holy Spirit whenever we need it-So that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

People who are incredibly wealthy often see no need for God. They think it's all due to their skill and savvy. @Fen well nothing wrong with Good News, right?
I think that Peale is coming back in vogue a bit. I know people have beef with Osteen for his message that God wants good things for you, but, well, whatever. There is now "science" around the positive thinking stuff. Shawn Achor came out of Harvard Divinity and wrote The Happiness Advantage. There is a lot of peer reviewed study around the effects of happiness. We have spent a lot of cycles in the study of unhappiness, not so much on happiness. I pitch that book along with Scott Adams How to Fail at Almost Everything which also encourages positive thinking. Adams is an atheist (non militant kind though) but he is big on reprogramming your brain. He is on Trumps wavelength on lots of things, I have to think that shared belief in positive thinking is part of that. Posted by: blaster at July 17, 2017 08:02 AM (jHrzU) 175

It is interesting that no one has ever testified publicly with evidence proving criminal actions by the Clintons in any of the shady activities they are continually accused of.
Why not? My guess is that the Clintons are excellent judges of character, so to speak: The only people given access to the inner-workings are ones the Clinton's believe are as amoral as themselves, will keep no written records of shady activities, and will keep their mouths shut when the going gets a little tough. As long as they've been paid well or otherwise taken care of (with plum political jobs or women or whatever), that is. That's probably a reason why the Clintons continue to be money-grubbers: They have a big payroll. Once in a while someone wanders off the reservation, and gee, it's too bad he killed himself, or a couple of thugs killed him at 3 AM a short distance from his home. Clinton's believe are as amoral as themselves, will keep no written records of shady activities, and will keep their mouths shut when the going gets a little tough. This is how they do it: they have a loyal team of employees who follow them from one place to the next. Huma Abedin is a perfect example of this: her entire career she's worked for Hillary, though technically her paycheck has come from Senate, campaign, State Dept., etc. This means someone like Huma's career depends on Hillary succeeding. That's a way to get loyalty. Hillary brought over 70 people with her to State. This was unprecedented; SoS's usually use existing State Dept. staff. This ensured taht everyone close to Hillary was alreasy loyal to, and known by, the Clinton team. Posted by: Lizzy at July 17, 2017 08:33 AM (NOIQH) 234

Some woman I don't know came to our church Flea Market in May. I didn't meet her but she wants to have her house blessed. She is nervous about several deaths there in the past and strange noises. She had a priest come out when she moved in 3 years ago. I told her I was not a priest and she still wants me to come. so I asked my friend the Eastern Orthodox church to give me some holy water and he did. never used that before in blessing and house and never had issues with strange noises. What you're describing is a variation of a "swamp cooler." it relies on the cooling effect of evaporation. It will bring down the air temp, but it will also raise the humidity. In drier climes, they work. If you have a combination of high heat and humidity, the effect is negligible at best. Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at July 17, 2017 08:56 AM (ty7RM) 301

Also, the five gallon bucket thing with holes doesn't sound too effective. Son put a box fan on top of the styrofoam cooler filled with ice, blowing down on the ice. Then cut a hole in the side of the cooler and attached a piece of 4" pvc for the air outlet. Whos Annabelle.
======== Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann-type doll that was the center of demonic activity. Ed and Lorraine Warren (I've met Lorraine), famous for their investigation of the Amityville haunting and many others, worked on this case in the early 70s. Two nursing students owned this doll (it was a gift from one of their mothers) and strange things happened to them over a period of several months. It was determined that the doll was a repository for a lower-level demon. Eventually the Warrens did take the doll and have it displayed in their paranormal museum in Connecticut. There was a movie made about the doll, but it was pure fiction and hardly resembles the actual story. Posted by: bicentennialguy at July 17, 2017 09:11 AM (vg8iE) 353

We have had several years of a growing economy, with a strong stock market continually hitting new highs, and with (in many places) a frothy real estate market -- yet many states are struggling to find money to pay their bills and balance their budgets.
If so many states are struggling during the good times, imagine how it's going to be when the shit hits the fan and tax revenue plummets? Posted by: USzuela at July 17, 2017 09:16 AM (qYCgM) 366

Posted by: Under Fire at July 17, 2017 09:12 AM (mcI77) I've had the honor and privilege of working with the Honorable Mr. McConnell for quite some time, and found the man's character to be impeccable. Is it? I don't know what was going on in his personal life, but most CTists I've met are very unhappy people. Given that he embraced multiple CTs, some offensive enough to result in social isolation (Holocaust denial), I can't say that suicide is all that surprising. Here is why AI - of the type that all the people fear - will never exist.
1. Electrical capacitance. An electrical capacitor is formed any time two conductors are separated by an insulator. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the thickness of the insulator. The insulators in neurons ( the cell walls) are so thin that the electrical capacitance of a neuron is enormous for its size. This is why the electrical signals in the nervous system travel so slowly compared to electrical signals in wires; the capacitance has to be charged and discharged to change the state of the neuron. Any transistor trying to be neuron sized will have the same speed limitations neurons have. Rather than running at gigahertz speeds any computer with neuron sized elements won't work any faster than the human brain (around 12 Hz cycle speed). 2. Completely wrong architecture. Computers are great for doing things like math - they truly suck at doing the things like pattern recognition that the human brain excels in doing. There are other problems but those two are enough to stop the AI fears; the singularity will never happen. Posted by: An Observation at July 17, 2017 09:27 AM (U4E66) 381
335 Just to set the record straight again for those that don't know-I am clergywoman. I am not gay. I have never had surgery to become a woman. My church ordains women-an issue I don't debate because what would be the point? :^) People are free to chose what they believe about the issue andthe debate never changes anyone's mind anyway. Been there done that. Don't anymore. :^)

It'll be Yuge. That's how the fiscal reckoning begins. The OCare Reform bill is about pushing the fiscal gap down to the states, to force change. If it stays at the federal level then it's borrow and spend. Posted by: Ignoramus at July 17, 2017 09:28 AM (+7/1f) 384

Just like the recent deaths of Peter W. Smith and Klaus Eberwein. You realize that the quote supposedly from Eberwein is actually Dahoud Andre, right? I suggest that all Morons support the national term limits movement Hasn't SCOTUS already ruled this out? Isn't it anti-republican? Won't it just give them less time to steal making them sloppier? Turnover is good but I'd think we can get better mechanisms. How about you have to beat your opponent and your prior vote count in every election? If you're not getting better for your constituents GTFO. Posted by: DaveA at July 17, 2017 09:50 AM (FhXTo) 392

I don't recall a national raising of the drinking age but I do remember when Michigan's went to 21. I was 19 and a half and there was no grandfather clause. This was January 1st, 1979 and I had been drinking legally for a year and a half. They still had to let us in the bar though, so the new law really didn't put a crimper in my drinking habits.
