The title is so sublime and ironic considering the storyteller. The whole movie is a take on Crime and Punishment.
Allen did another attempt at the story with Jonathan Reis (?) and, I think, Scarlett Johansson. It was weak in comparison to his first try.

118 "Today is Monday, July 17, 2017. On this day in 1984
the national drinking age in the United States was changed back from 18
to 21 due to pressure from MADD. It had been changed to 18 since you
could be drafted at 18. And before that it was set by the individual
States as they saw fit.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party"

Ohio had a referendum on raising the drinking age because so many we're opposed and it was voted overwhelming to \keep it 18 , something like 70%. However the federal govt was blackmailing states that did not comply by withholding highway funds. State legislators eventually submitted and raised the drinking age as directed by their masters. This happened under Reagan, a huge disappointment. Don't recall where Reagan stood but MADD had the whole country whipped into a frenzy.

130 Positive thinking is not bs, IMO, in this sense. If you think you have the ability to overcome things and think about positive things, that's good. What the problem is-from my perspective as a person of faith-is "going forth on your own power" only gets you so far-that you sputter out like a car without gas. Both the Old and New Testament assert that God is in control and that God gives power to the weak and strengthens the powerless. For Christians we are given the Holy Spirit at both our baptisms and/ or Confirmation when we affirmed Jesus is Lord of our lives and we can ask for a fresh indwelling of the Holy Spirit whenever we need it-So that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

174 @Fen well nothing wrong with Good News, right?

I think that Peale is coming back in vogue a bit. I know people have beef with Osteen for his message that God wants good things for you, but, well, whatever.

There is now "science" around the positive thinking stuff. Shawn Achor came out of Harvard Divinity and wrote The Happiness Advantage. There is a lot of peer reviewed study around the effects of happiness. We have spent a lot of cycles in the study of unhappiness, not so much on happiness. I pitch that book along with Scott Adams How to Fail at Almost Everything which also encourages positive thinking. Adams is an atheist (non militant kind though) but he is big on reprogramming your brain. He is on Trumps wavelength on lots of things, I have to think that shared belief in positive thinking is part of that.

Any stories about those places that include the traditional why-what-when-who stuff would expose the causes of the problems...and those causes are not in accordance with the US MSM's favored "narratives." In other words: Corrupt black and brown and/or socialist politicians? No such things. Corrupt unions and political parties? No such things. Give people handouts and they eventually want more and more handouts? Nah, impossible. And so on...

Positive thinking is a very good thing as opposed to "I'll never amount to anything. I'll never recover from hard things in my life" Because I am Christian I appreciate talented and wealthy people who have some humility and thank God for their many gifts.
I haven't read Prager's book although it sounds great but he is a person of religious faith. However, positive thinking is not the complete"Good news" in the sense that I would use that term. :^)

220 It is interesting that no one has ever testified publicly with evidence proving criminal actions by the Clintons in any of the shady activities they are continually accused of.

Why not? My guess is that the Clintons are excellent judges of character, so to speak: The only people given access to the inner-workings are ones the Clinton's believe are as amoral as themselves, will keep no written records of shady activities, and will keep their mouths shut when the going gets a little tough. As long as they've been paid well or otherwise taken care of (with plum political jobs or women or whatever), that is. That's probably a reason why the Clintons continue to be money-grubbers: They have a big payroll.

Once in a while someone wanders off the reservation, and gee, it's too bad he killed himself, or a couple of thugs killed him at 3 AM a short distance from his home.

While I'm mostly on board with the term limits idea, it has an associated danger, that it effectively puts more power into the hands of the professional congressional staffers. Gotta take care of that problem at the same time or the benefits of term limits is going to be minimal.

On the other hand, the thought of McCain having to go back to Arizona to sit on the porch mumbling to himself is a pretty picture.

This is how they do it: they have a loyal team of employees who follow them from one place to the next. Huma Abedin is a perfect example of this: her entire career she's worked for Hillary, though technically her paycheck has come from Senate, campaign, State Dept., etc. This means someone like Huma's career depends on Hillary succeeding. That's a way to get loyalty.

Hillary brought over 70 people with her to State. This was unprecedented; SoS's usually use existing State Dept. staff. This ensured taht everyone close to Hillary was alreasy loyal to, and known by, the Clinton team.

249 Muslims heeded calls Monday not to enter the Temple Mount and protested outside after Israeli authorities installed metal detectors at entrances to the ultra-sensitive compound following a terrorist
attack at the site that killed two policemen.

The compound was largely empty on Monday apart from tourists and Jewish visitors, with Muslims again praying and protesting outside the site instead of entering through the metal detectors.

What you're describing is a variation of a "swamp cooler." it relies on the cooling effect of evaporation. It will bring down the air temp, but it will also raise the humidity. In drier climes, they work. If you have a combination of high heat and humidity, the effect is negligible at best.

I stopped in at Fry's in Arlington a few weeks ago for shop supplies, and the AC was out in the whole building. That particular Fry's is a dump to begin with, but with the AC out, everyone in the store was irritable and douchey.

I got a kick out of how the guys in the computer section dealt with the heat. Well, there was this guy, Victir Thorn, who wrote four books on the Clintons, one book devoted to all of the people close to the Clintons who have died. We could ask him. Oh wait, he up and shot himself in the head last summer, because I guess the idea of his favorite writing subject being elected president, thus creating all sorts of book material, gave him the sadz.

I used to terrorize my kids after 'Poltergeist' first came out and they saw it. We'd go upstairs with a tennis ball and throw it into my daughters closet. Then backstairs to sit in kitchen. A couple minutes later a tennis ball would come out of the kitchen ceiling and bounce to the ground.

Yeah, I had a second tennis ball in my pocket which I would toss at the ceiling when they were both distracted.

Despite my best efforts they're both normal middle class adults now.

352 Whos Annabelle.
========

Annabelle is a Raggedy Ann-type doll that was the center of demonic activity.

Ed and Lorraine Warren (I've met Lorraine), famous for their investigation of the Amityville haunting and many others, worked on this case in the early 70s. Two nursing students owned this doll (it was a gift from one of their mothers) and strange things happened to them over a period of several months. It was determined that the doll was a repository for a lower-level demon.

Eventually the Warrens did take the doll and have it displayed in their paranormal museum in Connecticut.

There was a movie made about the doll, but it was pure fiction and hardly resembles the actual story.

380 Here is why AI - of the type that all the people fear - will never exist.

1. Electrical capacitance. An electrical capacitor is formed any time two conductors are separated by an insulator. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the thickness of the insulator. The insulators in neurons ( the cell walls) are so thin that the electrical capacitance of a neuron is enormous for its size. This is why the electrical signals in the nervous system travel so slowly compared to electrical signals in wires; the capacitance has to be charged and discharged to change the state of the neuron. Any transistor trying to be neuron sized will have the same speed limitations neurons have. Rather than running at gigahertz speeds any computer with neuron sized elements won't work any faster than the human brain (around 12 Hz cycle speed).

2. Completely wrong architecture. Computers are great for doing things like math - they truly suck at doing the things like pattern recognition that the human brain excels in doing.

There are other problems but those two are enough to stop the AI fears; the singularity will never happen.
