Game Of Thrones Is Bad -- And Bad For You. Otherwise Known As: Erstwhile Conservative Writer Is Actually A Nagging Little Leftist

white walker rise.png

It doesn't matter what you think of Game of Thrones, because our betters (in this case a snot-nosed punk with ironic facial hair and a receding hairline) have decided that it is not fit for your consumption. Never mind that Game of Thrones is a TV SHOW! It's fiction. It is meant to be consumed not as an allegory, or a guidebook for future conduct, or even as wish-casting for the nerds he waxes insultingly about. It is meant to be consumed as a diversion, as a pause in our real lives, but this humorless toad just doesn't get it.

But the real problem with Game of Thrones is not that it is, like most American popular culture these days, fundamentally adolescent. It is that it is obscene. It is not just bad art; it is art that is bad and bad for you.

And this is how we got Trump. In this case a preening, pompous arrogant elite who claims to be Catholic but is amazingly quick to judge (didn't some guy named - ironically - Matthew warn you folks about that?) is telling us what is good for us and bad for us. But Americans are just a bit tired of being told what to do and what to think, even by "conservatives."
Popular culture in the English-speaking world is in the grips of a downward nerd-driven death spiral. Outside of the art-house theaters of our major cities it is almost impossible to find more than one semi-decent film a month that is not an adaptation of some decades-old picture book franchise about men in rubber costumes punching each other. The average video game player is more than 30 years old. The only book that most Americans between the ages of 23 and 40 seem to have read whose title does not begin with some variation of "Harry Potter and the” is a fable about talking animals that they were assigned in middle school. Things are bad.

Ah yes..."art-house theater." Because art must have a message, and only our elites are sufficiently aware to be able to interpret those messages. Bow down before your betters! Never mind that "popular culture" has always catered to the least-common denominator. And that's okay. I like raucous, escapist, thoroughly forgettable diversions as much as the next guy. I also have the intellectual capacity to discern between reality and entertainment, something that Matthew Walther clearly doesn't have.

Look, it doesn't matter whether you like Game of Thrones, and judging by the comments over the years many of you don't. But has anyone suggested that it has some evil intent, some nefarious message that will drive the coarsening of the culture? No, because most of us are sort of adult about our entertainments, and understand that it is fiction. And even more than that, the suggestion that it is "bad for you" is risible, because while many evil and manipulative and cruel characters are successful, it is also clear within the story that their behavior is not acceptable outside of the context of realpolitik. So I am not even sure what the hell this guy is talking about.

Actually, I do know exactly what he is talking about. He thinks he is smarter and better and more aware and better educated and more sophisticated than any of you.

4 I have a hard time watching GoT, and actually skipped the last couple of seasons. But not because I thought it was objectively bad - it just isn't my style. No worries, different strokes and all of that.

But this article continues a theme for this week of narcissists having no hesitancy in telling us what to think and expecting to be congratulated for it. I don't watch the show, but I don't think any less of you if you like it - I thought that was what "tolerance" was all about.

8 I quit reading the books after the first one because I knew that every character would be screwed over. I'm not going to waste my time reading depressing fiction when reality continues to be depressing enough. And yes I got my fill of Humans being sick and evil just by reading Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking.

I think that's what's at the root of the article you quoted from. This guy doesn't get ( or like me, doesn't WANT to get) Game of Thrones and is scorched because that's all it seems everyone else wants to talk about.

'So-called conservative' is correct. This is at the heart of leftism right now. Everything must be mainstreamed and accepted without reservations, even the most boorish, rude, and unacceptable behavior imaginable.

*You* will be called to fault for rejecting this boorish, rude, and unacceptable behavior.

Recently I was in conversation with someone on the aspie 'spectrum'. In the middle of what I was saying he/she turned her back on me and walked away. I automatically/reflexively gave him/her the finger and walked away myself, muttering about rudeness. My actions were caught by others though.

I just don't care anymore. I will continue to judge till my dying breath.

I agree. I don't want to put words in Soothsayer's mouth, so I won't, but one strongly implicated corollary to the "[xyz piece of pop-culture] is trash" angle is the implication that those who watch it are weak minded simpletons who don't understand the difference between "real" and "fake".

You know, like leftists. But I digress.

Trash people watch trash and continue to be trashy. Normal people watch trash and are amused by the trashiness, but continue to be normal.

So all it boils down to is saying "trash people are trashy." Which ain't much to go on for building an ethos.

Just my two cents. Or whatever the smallest unit of currency in Westeros is.

33 Well, GoT does largely suck. At least, it's the most overrated show I've seen. My wife pointed out that, really, Tyrian is just a very short Gregory House.

Most of the "shocking" stuff is actually better done in I, Claudius. Admittedly with much lower visual quality, but exactly how much does on place on that? The dialogue, and the performances are much weaker. Not one is at the level of LIvia, Antonia, Tiberius, or Caligula.

I'll also quote a friend of mine (while watching an episode): "Is anyone in this country actually good at his job?"

I will grant that Dragon Girl does look damn good naked.

Threat to our civilization? No. Meh? Yes.

40 All right, I'll be the contrarian here. I read the linked article.

I think he's right. I don't think watching stuff like that would be good for my soul. Others can decide for themselves, just like the author of the article did.

But nowhere in the article did I see him tell people they should not be watching it. He says he thought about it and decided it was endangering his own immortal soul. He doesn't say "you people who watch it must stop now."

I think he just wants to make people think. You can think about it, and not agree with him. But that doesn't mean you should conclude that he's trying to tell you what to do. Because I don't believe he is.

Posted by: bluebell at July 16, 2017 12:17 PM (sBOL1)

41 Yeah, the guy's a pompous douche. I can't actually aruge with the notion GoT is implausibly, absurdly immoral: I think the old Crusaders would have teamed up with Saladin to fight all of Westeros, except maybe the Starks (and even they would have to convert to a real religion).

Meanwhile, I think the backlash may be because people keep praising the writing and world building of GoT Season 6. It's as convincing as praising Playboy for the articles.

43 I'm a real latecomer to GoT, and since I don't get HBO, I get it via Netflix. It's a lot better than the endless comic book movies, and there's actually time to develop a plot. That, and Tyrion has some dialogue that doesn't sound like it was written by a 9-year old.

Sure, it's lurid and vulgar and violent. I'll live. Is it indicative of the low state of modern culture, which really is low? Maybe, but it also has strong points.

In short, feel free to condemn it, but I don't care what you think, I care what I think. As long as you aren't trying to take away my choices, you're entitled to your opinion.

The article clearly states what so many of us watching the decline of culture know--exposing yourself to the worst excesses of rot will change your ability to function in a moral and ethical manner, and even if, as you claim, you can rise above all of that and remain untouched, is there really a purpose to indulging the worst of the excesses?

You claim it is for entertainment, but in truth it is simply lascivious indulgence, the equivalent of eating twinkies and drinking Maddog 2020. You know damned well it isn't good for you, but you choose it anyway.

Nothing this fellow said prevents you from indulging, but he tweaked a nerve because you know it's crap. If it didn't matter to you, then you wouldn't be so ticked off by him calling you out.

I don't necessarily want to see it all the time as entertainment, but man's inhumanity to man is as old as humanity itself, and still goes on in much of the world. I guess my point, to the extent I have one, is that's it's not all that shocking in the broader context of the fucked up world we live in.

In other words, a human may judge but at the same time must be ready to put his own life on the scale for God to judge.

In this country, if the government if of the people, by the people and for the people, then I guess there is some role the government should play. And that's been an argument ever since mass entertainment appeared, and obviously before that.
Books, you can't read that!
The Catholic Church even tried to control who read The Bible, before Gutenberg's press was working.
And they were right in their own narrow interpretation. Because more people reading The Bible partly led to the Protestant Reformation.

The want to control the movies, radio (fairness doctrine), TV (FCC regulations), the Internet (Net Neutrality), and on, and on.

Culture, books, entertainment are a form of nourishment for the spirit, just like food is nourishment for the body.
Eat bad food, get bad nourishment, and you get sick, or your health is poor, or you are over weight.

And they were right in their own narrow interpretation. Because more people reading The Bible partly led to the Protestant Reformation.

Posted by: Bossy Conservative....outlaw in America at July 16, 2017 12:44 PM (S6Pax)

That's a load of garbage. The Catholic Church chained Bibles in Churches because they were valuable and rare, and they chained them where anyone could come and read them any time. At no time did they prevent anyone from reading them, and they also made stained glass windows and scuptures of Bible stories so that those (the majority of folks) who were illiterate could learn the stories as well.

The Protestant revolution began because Luther didn't like some of the excesses of inveterate sinners in the Catholic hierarchy, but also because he had a monumental ego and wanted to marry a nun.

It is possible to read history without resorting to polemic.

That would seem to be at odds with the notion they were valuable. If something's valuable you don't let just anyone come off the street and handle it.

My folks went to Catholic schools in the 20th century and are both of the opinion that reading the Bible was discouraged.

And this Catholic site says Catholics didn't start being encouraged to read The Bible until 1943: https://tinyurl.com/jautwda

"Until the twentieth Century, it was only Protestants who actively embraced Scripture study. That changed after 1943 when Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu. This not only allowed Catholics to study Scripture, it encouraged them to do so."

Since my parents went to Catholic schools after 1943, we can assume the message didn't filter down right away.

At first the villagers think of this as harmless, but over time the bears and the misfits form a strong bond and the bears are convinced to attack and destroy the village, killing dozens.

168 "didn't some guy named - ironically - Matthew warn you folks about that"

About what? Are you saying that he is being a hypocrite in his judgment? Ignoring his own obscene productions to preach about the dangers of obscene productions?

Non-Christians love to throw that line out, but it just shows they get their Christian theology off of whatever random bumper stickers they come across.

Here are some more: please feel free to explain to me how these are to be done without judging:

"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your peals to pigs."

"What out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruits, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. But don't judge fruit!"

I may have added that last part.

Or, maybe Jesus told us to never judge:

"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgement."

Well, there goes that.

I have absolutely no interest in Game of Thrones or the latest moral outrage; just the stupid simplicity of taking a single quote out of a ridiculously big text, whittling it down to shear it of all context, and then using that to preach.

172 I'll start this off by saying that I really dislike GoT (the books, I dislike them enough that I never gave the series a watch.)

There is an interesting irony/coincidence here. I have mentioned before on this blog when discussing LoTR that one of the themes Tolkien wanted to explore in his series was the world without a savior- the idea that courage in the absence of the guarantee of everlasting life was more profound. Tolkien however, believed that Man was fundamentally good. That the human soul would still strive towards goodness, even in the absence of the knowledge of Christ/God.

Martin, the leftist, does not operate under that belief and that is reflected in his world. His world is a brutal medieval dystopia full of evil, pettiness and rape.

I really dislike GoT, but do I think it is dangerous? Only in the opposite. It is in of itself not dangerous, but only illustrates how a society can be judged by which stories it tells.

On the other hand, good superhero stories are also popular. So we got that going for us.

That said, superhero entertainment is no more than a retelling of the same themes that the Greeks, the ancient Chinese, and all other cultures were telling. Just with more capes and rubber nipple costumes. And the vast majority of culture throughout history has been to please the masses. High art doesn't get made as high art, it becomes high art because it reflects something about the world that resonates with the audience throughout time. I'm sure Shakespeare was just trying to write a play about two idiot kids who fall in love and all the trouble it causes, because a guy's gotta eat and that's what the paying crowd likes.

Yes, they threw the Bible open in the vernacular to be read by "regular" people--that is people who were literate and could actually read, which most people couldn't. But it also led to almost instant splintering of Protestant churches of which there are literally thousands as opposed to a SINGLE Catholic Church. Why? Because there were different interpretations of Scripture--the very thing The RC Church tried to avoid by keeping it in Latin and thus out of reach of most people. The Church had been through these interpretation wars while the Roman Empire was still a thing....

211 Also the spread of Protestantism had as much to do with European politics of the time as it did with actual "Faith." Even after Luther, many parts of Germany remained Catholic and a lot depended on the whims of the local princes---if they remained Catholic, so did their subjects; if they had a beef with Rome, they became Protestant and that's what their people became. Some switched back and forth depending on who they got a better deal from.

And Henry VIII had no problem with Catholic doctrine or the pageantry of the liturgy--the inside of any Anglican Church could be a Catholic Church. He just had it in for Rome and The Pope--allies of his rivals France and Spain....

As the proprietor of this moron blog often points out, TV is the both Library of Alexandria and the Ministry of Propaganda for high priests of the left, and it suffers from no lack of undeserved praise. 240 If the sentence had just been written:

"It is almost impossible to find more than one semi-decent film a month that is not an adaptation of some decades-old picture book franchise about men in rubber costumes punching each other."

...wouldn't it be, you know, true? Instead of true (good) and smug (bad).

On the subject of George "Arrrrrr" Martin (I think I read somewhere those aren't even his real initials; he added the second "R" himself, so I guess he's just a tubby little pirate wannabe or a self-made knockoff of you-know-who), to add to what someone else wrote above I started his first book and put it down after less than 5 pages. Not only was the writing terrible (the use of the suffix "-ling" was bad enough when George Lucas used it, and Martin seemed to love it), but the cocky kid and entourage getting killed immediately by otherworldly beings made that whole scene completely pointless, as well as inexplicable. If there are super-powerful homicidal otherworldly beings running around your world, why are you so cocky and what the hell are you doing running around at night?

Trying to figure out the answers to those questions made my head hurt, so I put the book down and eventually gave it away, to someone that I think never bothered to read it, either.

294 There is a very simple solution to this. We need common sense art reform. I think if we create a department of arts and humanities, cabinet level, of course we could increase the sophistication of art consumed by Americans and save our cultural souls. It would only need an annual budget of 300 billion, a new 8 million square foot office park in Fairfax, 150-200 field offices and 30-40 thousand agents. We would create a national arts identification card that you would be required to present before consuming any art modality. An office within the department would be required to rate all art on a quality scale. All art producers would have to meet a specified minimum average quality rating or have their license to produce art revoked. Individual citizens would also be subjected to minimum quality viewing minimums. If you don't meet the minimum quality, you will pay a quality tax. You won't be told what to watch or what quality, it's jut that if you are watching what the department considers crap, then you pay a tax. It is purely voluntary in that way. Tax funds will be used for education...for the children. How can we not do this simple reform for the children?

It kind of depends. "I like this thing you don't like, and don't like this thing you do, and here are my reasons" can be interesting and they might agree with some of the criticisms you have on their favored item and the positives about what you like.

But when its "I don't like this because its absolute crap and this other thing is so much better, and that's the end of the discussion," yeah that can get boring.

320 No, I argued that his critique was pompous and elitist because it wasn't a criticism of the show's merits, but rather a polemic on how it was going to affect MY morality.

He is a bit overwrought in places, but his argument is basically that watching an unrelenting stream of depravity can't be good for you. That is a pretty anodyne point.

You could have argued that what you watch has no effect on your moral character - I find that thesis fairly dubious myself, but you could have at least tried to argue the point. You could have argued that the awful things shown in GoT were portrayed in such a way as to promote virtue - the Bible, for example, contains lots of sex and violence but doesn't glorify them. You could have argued that the sex and violence are a reflection of reality and as such should be included for their own sake.

You could have argued a number of things. Instead, you went with the "you can't tell me what to do, you poopyhead!" argument.

329 147 The Catholic Church even tried to control who read The Bible, before Gutenberg's press was working.

He didn't marry until long after the 95 Thesis were posted, he was hauled in front of the Diet of Worms and ordered to recant, refused, was spirited away, and the Reformation got started in earnest.

There were vernacular bible translations predating Luther - particularly the English translation by Wycliff - floating around for generations. The Church wasn't real keen on those, either.

The question of whether certain materials are healthy or not is one that parents face all the time. Most of us don't mind if the kids watch some vapid junk but we do monitor unhealthy messages and images.

To quote from an actual writer/artist.

How do we know it's true art? And before you start making gestures and sputtering, to finally come back with "knowledgeable people know that," let me cut through the fog. The answer is, we don't. No, not even experts. If everyone knew what great art was, investment in art wouldn't be such a risky business. Great art, great literature, any form of "greatness" in creative expression is ultimately "What future generations think is great." And, like all speculation about the future, it's difficult, if not impossible. In visual art, what is often the acclaimed taste of an era is the laughable, ridiculous pastiche of a later era.

361 sheesh, the dumb in this post. First off, the Bible is talking about judging people, not tv shows. Next off, the Catholic Church has been signing off on what TV shows, movies and books are suitable for the faithful for a long time. Next off, GOT sucks ass. As a writer, I find it poorly structured, the dialog is awful and its the the tv equivalent of offensive clickbait: rape, incest, gruesome murder, infanticide, have they resorted to cannibalism or necrophilia yet? Because if not they soon will, in order to up the ante every season. TV is worse than ever, notwithstanding the crowing about how cable series are widening the "art". They just allow it to get more crass and coarse.

An counter-example someone turned me on to is "Better Call Saul"- it's about crime and law, but there's a relatively small amount of violence, and most shockingly, the chars don't use the F word every other word (probably because it's on AMC). That's one of the things that put me off Deadwood, which I otherwise would be inclined to like, was the wall to wall 'fucks', which is not even how people in the wild wild west talked. To blaspheme was considered cursing, not vulgarisms or obscenity.

Anyway, Fuck GOT.

363 GoT, made it to S1 E8 and then I just stopped watching due to Danny "Where's my dragons, where's my dragon's....blah, blah, blah, blah." and the show felt like the verbose book but deviated so far from it (actor contracts and what not) made it unwatchable Like John Adams after Ep3. Dumb storylines I can understand but boring, I don't have time to waste.

2) Anyone can judge actions. You might remember "courts" from junior-high Civics, if you've gotten that far. "Courts" judge actions like murder, theft, DUI, etc. But NO ONE can judge the state of another's soul--except God.

Wake up. Culture counts. Cultural pollution is real. Now, maybe you can argue that your little hobby isn't cultural pollution, but you can't argue that cultural pollution doesn't exist; that something just simply doesn't matter because "it's only a TV show."

Fiction moves the world equally as actual events do.

449 I'm not a huge fan of Game of Thrones, but watch it if you want.

My problem with it isn't the actual show, but the fact that despite being watched by relatively few people, it has huge cultural impact. Most watchers in one night? 7.2 million. That's less than the population of Virginia. New York City alone has more people than that. Its 2% of the population.

But from the hype, references, comments, and popular culture impact you'd think it was the most watched show on television. I bet 9 out of 10 people who talk about it even watch the show more than once in a while.

That's annoying to me. Its a coffee table book show, its something people reference and preen around but don't actually participate in.

The Pope was perfectly fine with Henry's adultery and offered to grant Henry a dispensation for bigamy if he wanted to marry Anne. He just wasn't willing to let Henry divorce catherine. Chelsea Clinton any day now will start talking about the 'stigma' of Asperger and/or Autism and a drive will begin to remove all references of it from the latest DSM. Television shows will begin to 24/7 'prove' the 'bigotry' of people who have little patience for those will little or no social skills. The mob will be turned loose.

Safe spaces will be required in every building to accommodate them. Words spoken without 'Trigger warnings' will be enforced with first offenders picking up trash from the side of the road on weekends. College campuses will ban opposing views.

Nah, I'm RC so you took it the wrong way. I know it was Henry's adultery and the refusal of the Pope to annul his marriage that set the ball rolling, but I was taking the broader view that it's not even matters of "Faith' and belief that caused the wars between Catholics and Protestants in the wake of the Reformation--although I'm sure it was that for certain individuals--but base politics.

This isn't in no way a direct comparison and it's not meant to be but it could be tangential in some way, but about Islam, I could care less how often during the day Muslims pray and to whom and whatever way they face. But I do care about their adherence to the concept of Jihad and how they design to take over the world "by the sword." It's politics.

495 On net, GOT might well be bad for many people. I'm sure that a moral, well-balanced adult could watch it and any number of other things with little or no negative effect. Conservatives used to criticize these kind of coarse entertainments on the ground that they'd be significantly more negative in effect for those not raised with the proper morals - often referred to as the "guardrails" argument - staunch standards in entertainments being intended to keep those less fortunate, with whom we must live with, from going astray. GOT may not merit that concern per se (or it might), but watch a movie like Funny Games and it becomes hard argue that guardrails don't serve a valuable role.

One of my guilty pleasures is gangsta rap. Not all of it, just some. I doubt it influences me overmuch, but I'm also religious in a relatively traditional way and law-abiding for the most part. But all the violence, promiscuity, degradation of women, etc. in those lyrics cannot be good for the soul and there are definitely demographics - young inner-city black men for example - for whom those lyrics are very corrosive. 497 I do think the new geek fixation of loving everything nerdy is not good (it kind of diminishes some of the joy of being a RPG gamer and being unique and holding secret knowledge when everyone knows what a d20 is), but not in the sense he means.

I agree with Donald Carson's breakdown of culture.

There's pop culture (the lowest form) which is temporary and shallow, adding nothing but trendiness and bandwagon fascination, and never lifting the culture up. At best it keeps things flat and level and usually drags it down. This is pop music, crappy sitcoms, movies by Johnny Knoxville, etc.

There's folk culture, which gives voice to a people in a culture and comes from the heart. Its "common" in the sense that it requires no special education and training, but instead is a natural outpouring of the people living in the world, but is fine in and of its self. This is bluegrass, blues, zydeco, arts and crafts stuff, etc.

Then there's high culture, which enlightens and lifts the soul by giving a glimpse of the transcendent. It teaches and brings elevation through beauty and truth given form in art. Michaelangelo, Bach, Shakespeare, etc.

Geek culture used to be folk. Its being turned into pop. And that's not good.

498 The above commenters have it right but just to be completely clear if you read all of Matthew 7: 1-6, it's clear the only thing Christ was talking about was hypocrisy (he even uses the word 'hypocrite' for the particularly dense, as we all can be from time to time), not 'never judge anyone'.

The whole 'take the plank out of your own eye' concept is not to perfect yourself so you can beat up your neighbor for his faults, but to have defeated the sin so you can aid him, or at least inspire him, do defeat his (alcoholism being the problem I most often hear discussed in this context).

But if someone is engaged in egregious sin that you are not, the Christian is absolutely required to be judgmental. The sinner needs to know his sin so that he can correct it and seek forgiveness. If he's unwilling to mend his ways, we are to have nothing further to do with him, lest he influence us (because humans are weak and wicked by nature it is far easier to fall into a sin that you've already made excuses for if you continue to be exposed to it).

Posted by: Methos at July 16, 2017 03:09 PM (3Liv/)

499 61 I believe the full Biblical quote is:

"Judge not, lest ye be judged. Matthew 7 KJV:
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? These chapters and verses were added to scripture by a Catholic monk over 900 years ago. They are semi-arbitrary but he did try to group related passages together appropriately to reflect the underlying Greek text. So these first 3 verses of Matthew 7 are very directly related. You can't just pluck verse 1 out of its context.

The passage warns Christians not to judge unrighteously. It indicates in verse 2 that God will judge us by the standard with which we are judging others. And that God will be no more merciful or compassionate to you than you have been when judging the conduct of others. In verse 3, the Christian is told not to try to judge and correct someone else when you likely have an even greater sin in your own life, another veiled warning against hypocrisy, surely a very common theme in the New Testament.

The New Testament goes to considerable lengths to encourage compassion and forgiveness but also to instruct Christians in developing a humble but righteous judgment of all situations and persons. Look at all the times the bible contrasts righteousness with unrighteousness. It is nearly always a matter of righteous judgment/conduct vs. unrighteous judgment/conduct.

Of course, this is a very hard teaching to live by. The New Testament should never be read as representing a harsh judgmental tradition such as we find in Islam or Judaism, both of which are fundamentally texts of religious legalism. The New Testament, and the gospels in particular, are good tidings of a New Covenant. But while the burdens of Christian life are far far less than the mere legalisms of Islam and Judaism who labor under Law, the Christian nevertheless faces challenges like those commanded for righteous judgment and the consequences of unrighteous and harsh judgment and hypocrisy such as we find in Matthew 7.

Aren't we supposed to know how and why Christianity is so much better than Judaism and Islam? But that does not make it easy to practice faithfully.

516 I think condemning people for wanting to avoid Game of Thrones because they feel it might harm their soul is as foolish as those who think its evil and nobody ever should watch it no matter what.

People are different. What makes you shrug in indifference or walk away unscathed might have a profound effect on them. The acoholic has a much harder time watching a beer commercial than the teetotaler.

What doesn't bother you may cause someone else a lot of trouble, and vice versa. It isn't right to just condemn them for their stance on a subject or situation. And who knows, maybe something is hurting you more than you know or have considered, so its worth examining.

This is where the whole judge not thing comes from: its not saying "don't judge" its saying "judge only from a spirit of humility, charity, and concern." Love who you judge, don't think you're better than them.

I'm coming back to this because it's important. Aspergers/Autism (AA) is referred to as a 'spectrum' -- because it is all over the map.

Some people are 'high functioning' and some people are 'low functioning' and some in between. The person I'm referring to is obviously high functioning. It should be well within this persons capabilities to moderate the actions that others have warned him/her repeatedly about.

So, in high functioning AA individuals I do not see it so much as a disability as taking advantage. A poker game where they don't have to make eye contact, can ignore questions, ignore comments, act rudely, be obtuse, get up and walk away. Okay behavior in poker, maybe, but infuriating in real life.

Sorry, but when I make eye contact, see some variation of the 1000's of facial expressions available, I can make decisions as to deceit, or truth, or laughter, joy, regret, etc. I'm denied that.

I like playing by the rules. I win often. A lot of times. I don't like it when someone -- who can certainly moderate their actions -- hides behind the opaque curtain of 'disability' to gain advantage.

We are not disembodied intellects rationally responding to stimuli, at least not always. We have hearts as well as minds, and both can be poisoned and corrupted.

We have to be on guard about who we associate with. Same principle is relevant regarding what we read and watch.

Reasonable people can disagree about where the lines are. But it's not reasonable to suggest that no one is influenced by what they consume, and that those people don't go on to influence others.

Being a veteran and having an M.A. in history has truly resulted in having a very dark sense of humor. Being exposed to the dark side of humanity for a long time does things to you.

546 Calm down CBD. You're coming off defensive. I read this post in a screaming voice because of the tone.

If you'd read the other dude's piece instead of the headline you'd know he's writing from a Christian perspective. Not a ban all the things perspective.

If you disagree, that's cool. Ok.

So this person is gaming the system by claiming to be on the spectrum?

I don't think 'is claiming'. Is on the spectrum -- and knows the degrees both my wife and I hold and has been very good at hiding those clues for a while. But using their 'abilities' -- which aren't all necessarily bad (in game playing scenarios anyway) to advantage. Which tends to be a huge problem for me. People either are or you aren't, or maybe somewhere in between. If you are, you should consider that having children is probably not statistically a completely safe choice depending on partner. Especially (to me) if political leanings are to the left and having a problematic child is not something the left is known for lovingly supporting to the end. Two parents, one only slightly leaning, one more or less solidly in the middle of the spectrum puts the risk factor a couple of standard deviations closer to the bullseye of 'assured'. Which I would almost surely end up paying for in some fashion. Either through child support or payments to caregiver or special schooling for a decade or more. I'm not that wealthy. I don't have that much time left, nor does my wife, who would probably be willing to devote her final days to what could be a lost cause. I'm the proactive type, definitely not so good at expensive reactive. I'm not a completely heartless bastid either. Rock and hard place.

Because if he is actually an Aspie, he really can't always control himself. You said it yourself, their brains are literally wired differently. That's not to say he's not an ass, because, sure, high-functioning autistics can be jerks. Just like neurotypicals.

It's not exaggerating to claim this person is becoming the biggest horses ass I've met in my life. If Obama is the 'Gold Standard' he/she is running neck and neck. Cluelessly. Perhaps. Or perhaps the parents had the person tested as a child and have known all along. It's only through exposure that clues get dropped, more and more, every time. Each time clunking to the ground with a heavier 'thud'. They say that people are on the best behavior during dating. Well the dating is over as well as the best behavior. If behavior can be controlled during dating, why not now? I keep coming back to that question.

I'm going shopping, so I'll have to table your next GFY for about four hours. Enjoy your Sunday!

I'll delay the next GFY in your absence. Probably check tomorrow for your reply. I've really needed to vent on this. So thanks and a hearty GFY.

548 History boring? You ain't met the clans MacDonald, Campbell, Stuart or Douglas.

Google the Glencoe massacre, the Black Wedding or Kirk o' Field.

And that's just Scotland.

Then there's the GoT worthy cast of characters, skullduggery and plot twists Historian Matthew Lewis, reveals in "The Wars of The Roses: The Key Players in the Struggle for Supremacy".

See Towton or Flodden.

Meanwhile, The War of the League of Cambrai featured a nest of vipers in the Agustusan mold, was raging in Italy.

btw- I read the books as they were released and enjoyed them immensely (couldn't get through The Winds of Winter) and lost interest in the HBO production mid-way through season 2. No particular reason other than the deja vu one has when the books have a more complete story arc than a film or series.

550 1. I am a nerd. And whatever you might want to call a more general consumer and critic of sci-fi/fantasy/horror/whatever other sub-genre you want to throw into that.

2. GOT really does suck. The characters are repugnant, the story has long since bogged down in irrelevant distractions, obscure sub-plots, inane diversions, gratuitous pr0n, even more gratuitous torture pr0n, and just plain meandering. The books are, somehow, worse.
Most of that is due to GRRM, who, if you read Wild Cards back in the day, has a history of riding a story to fangasmic heights, getting bored with it, trashing the characters in egregious ways, and then wandering off to create some new sensation.

3. Of course most all of the previous is just personal aesthetics, and for every person who will endorse that view there are, rather clearly, a hundred others who will insist that GOT is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I am a cretinous cretin of a critic.

4. All of that said, that screed is just plain factually wrong as to content and culture.
Half a century ago we had The Wild Bunch (1969) for raw violence, blue movie (1969) for raw sex, and The Devils (1971) for both on steroids. (Which technically fall short by 2-4 years, but those are the ones I remember or find (for blue movie) with a quick search.)
Two decades ago HBO had Perversions of Science, a spinoff from Tales from the Crypt which premiered in 1989, and was revived because of the success of The Hitchhiker, which began in 1983. On the porn front, HBO was showing Real Sex starting in 1992.
Movies as violent and perverted as GOT were conceived, produced, and released half a century ago, and watching things like GOT two decades ago meant you were one of the "cool kids" whose parents let you watch ALL of HBO.
Far from GOT presaging our cultural decadence, been there, done that, not particularly impressed with the million dollar budget GOT has to do the same thing.

5. So just to be clear, he is neither smarter nor better than others when it comes to knowing the genre(s), leaving him with only his self-assumed moral supremacy and nagging.

551 Anyone here read David Gemmel, died a couple of years way before his time. His books featured a barbarian called Druss made Conan a piker. This could be a great movie.

552 The first season was great, Sean Bean bringing a gravitas to the role of a patriarch guided by a warrior code of honour, tradition and family which bring conflict when drawn into the ruthless court of politics, intrigue, and deviancy. Meanwhile, a malevolent perennial force coalesces, winter is coming. Something that people can identify with, being true to ones values yet being a survivor, amidst a larger cosmic spiritual battle.
After Beans departure, the series lost its anchor, and turned into a cruel revenge tragedy. It never had the clarity of the first season.

553 Actually, the admonition quoted from Mathew's gospel refers to judging the ultimate fate of someone's soul. There is no Christian moral teaching that forbids disapproval of someone's behavior or taste in fiction.

I denounce myself. If I can't trust an AoS'r to mangle or manipulate info at least as well as the Legacy Media ... then I might as well read the Newspaper of Record for my info.
