I would like to signal boost a comment from Tom Servo in the "Hawaiian Judge Reluctantly Accepts the Mantle of Supreme Commander and Dispenser of All Wisdom" thread a couple back. People are obviously frustrated by the incredible lawless actions of the judiciary and other supposedly neutral actors. Tom Servo said:
"So what do the people who voted for him and support Trump do the stop the coup?" For now, understand what a long game this is. Understand that Trump's first 2 years is all going to be spent just fighting lawsuits and judges and getting people appointed, and not much more is going to happen than that. The rot is too deep, the deep state is too entrenched, and the current Congress isn't capable of it. We need another big election in 2018 to knock some more of the current inhabitants out and put a scare into the rest of them. (We also need to replace Kennedy, which now won't happen til next year, probably.) This is the Battle of the Bulge, and we're under siege. It's going to take everything we got just to hang on til hopefully, some relief can come in 2018. These are words we should all live by. They have played the long game, it is our turn now. The election of President Trump provides us with an incredible opportunity to clean a lot of this up, but the election is simply the opening salvo in what is going to be a long war. I had hoped that Trump's election, by itself, would be enough to improve things, but we have learned differently. We have no choice but to dig in and keep working to fix things. Baby Sister Update
Yesterday (Thursday) was another great adventure for Joyce and her amazing friend Jessica: "I once read that if you repeat a task 10,000 times, you will instinctively perfect that task. Joyce is perfecting the simple yet important things she does; Thursday morning one hour at Jervey Gantt park with Joyce's sweet friend Erin. Erin's schedule allowed for a brief visit. Big hello's, lot's of hugs and kisses. Our active time at the park began with a long, impressive, walk to the outdoor racquetball courts for wall ball and leg lifts. (15 total). Joyce improved her leg lifts in a short time. Sitting in her chair she secured the ball between her ankles then slowly raised her feet and legs straight up and with assistance would even bend her knees & retract her feet with the ball back towards her. She's looking forward to perfecting this exercise. Then another impressive walk back to the car. Thrift shopping (on a mission ) was a huge success. We hit pay dirt with ($6 worth)! Lunch at Zaxby's was delish and the Hers & Hers beef pot pies we baked, one for each family's dinner, were delishamundo! We have SO MUCH FUN!" Thanks, Jessica! [To my fellow Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and our family.] Posted by: ibguy at July 14, 2017 10:28 PM (vUcdz) 66

Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki at July 14, 2017 10:26 PM (e9G8E) It is, but there is a "weapons-grade" drain opener made of crude concentrated sulfuric acid, which is dark brown from dissolved sulfur. RE: one of the stories above, I don't think that's it's entirely accurate to say all women hate all "harmless men."
I know two women, both conservatives involved their church-- one in her mid fifties and one in her forties-- that are married to what one would call 'harmless men.' Both have been married to the same man for over 25years and both are completely devoted to the guys who, IMHO, have hit the marriage lottery. In many ways, they have reversed gender roles before that became a thing. BTW... I wouldn't describe either of the women above as alpha. So "one size fits all" doesn't necessarily work. On the subject of average daily steps and Russia:
I spent a semester in college studying the language and the people in Saint Petersburg. Every weekday, I had the following walk: a kilometer to the subway station nearest my apartment, and about two kilometers from the subway station nearest the university to the university. The metro stations are a little more closely-spaced in Moscow, but given my experience, it's no surprise that Russians walk a lot. I ate probably four or five thousand calories a day (in no small part due to the enormous bowls of buttery kasha my host grandmother made for breakfast) and still lost weight. Posted by: BourbonChicken at July 14, 2017 10:48 PM (rnAwa) Really? Before endorsing the conclusion that that proved anything, I'd want to sweat the methodology of the "study." I'd be looking specifically for selection bias, viz., that people who choose to read Shakespeare are intellectually more able than those reading self-help books (which, frankly, are generally for retards). For example, a "study" might show that reading books on group theory is better for the brain than comic books, cleanly overlooking the difference in the demographics to which the respective books appeal. The obvious control experiment: switch the reading material of the two test groups, and measure the effect again. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at July 14, 2017 10:57 PM (SRKgf) 164

Job interview went very well, I think. They liked my resume, my experience, and I spent about two hours in discussions with the head of the company as well as several project managers. When the project managers were introducing themselves, one of them, I older white dude, said to me, "Hajimemashite", and I responded, "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu". I think he was pleased. He's retiring and I would be taking over some of his duties. The job itself sounds pretty cool. Most the time out witting them, being a better smart ass shuts them down. If it looks like it is going to escalate, leave. worth your time especially if you have been reading Scott Adams since about last August or so. Oh yeah, I have a favor. I could not bring myself to read it at the time, but I would really really like to read it now. I need that perspective. If you know what I am talking about and can post the link that would be great. Yes, women want a strong man.
"Bad boys" and a-holes may fool very young (or neurotic) women but most of us know that they are actually quite weak. Being "nice," in some ways is a good thing for all of us. Who wants someone around who is habitually rude and obnoxious? But what really matters is being GOOD. That takes strength. IMO. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at July 14, 2017 11:29 PM (0jtPF) 279
The job itself sounds pretty cool. Basically a lot of economic analysis of housing markets and water pricing, as well as some projects that the owner wants to do to expand the business: opportunities to work with GIS and such.

And I would LOVE to live in Tahoe.
Although the way things are going in California, I'd probably prefer the Nevada portion (which I believe is called Stateline). -- I lived in Zephyr Cove, which was a bit north of Stateline. But then had a place on the California side as well. But my legal address was always in NV. Back then, it was a small town. It's larger now, but it's still a small town. I'm used to the burbs. Within 10 miles, there are probly a dozen Catholic churches. There were two there. Ethnic anything? Sorry, only mexican, and it's better in Reno. Jewish deli? No. Your favorite ethnic bakery? You're on drugs. Ethnic was basically "Mexican" or "expensive resturant in a casino." Also.. in the summer, every day is perfect. Sunny and 85 or so. EVERY DAY. Month after month. After a while, it becomes oppressive, especially if you're used to really changeable weather, like I am. While I was there, I read a really lovely story in the local paper about how a woman decided to open a brothel, and worked for a prostitute for year, so she could relate to her girls. Her husband and adult children were very proud of her. Posted by: shibumi at July 14, 2017 11:30 PM (aT+Bx) 282

Ok serious for a second.
I have given a lot of thought to immigration policy. I have said that while the left claims it is in favor of immigration, the immigration policy is selective. The left, as I see it, only favors immigration from...leftist countries. So, why should we favor immigration from certain countries over others? If we are going to be pro-immigrant, shouldn't we allow unlimited immigration from all countries? For example, why not allow unlimited immigration from India and Japan and Poland and so forth in addition to the countries that the left favors? If they are truly in favor of immigrants then why not be in favor of ALL immigrants. So, Reason.com style, I am fair, and I embrace immigration from all countries in an unrestricted fashion. Well, I would simply add this caveat which I think my Uncle Palpatine can embrace: Let's allow unlimited immigration from all countries for women only. What do you guys thinks, and seriously I am not interested in the 'ettes opinion on this one. Posted by: davedavedavearf at July 14, 2017 11:51 PM (BLayO) 360

Life can be brutal. I've got other stories. Like the grasshopper sparrow nest I unveiled with my mower. It had two and then 4 eggs in it. The sparrow guarded the nest fiercely. The morning the eggs finally hatched a predator took all the chicks out. The mom sparrow did all she could. Alas. Lots of turkey vultures soar over the hills out here. 4 to 6 vultures can take a dead deer to bones in several days. My good news is that when I first moved to Kansas 4 vultures would circle me when I went for a hike around the neighborhood. I could hear them thinking "If he drops we can eat for a week." Now I hike around and the vultures avoid me. Posted by: NaCly Dog at July 14, 2017 11:51 PM (hyuyC) 364

{{waving}} Hi Jim!
I wanted you-- and the rest of the horde-- to know that I did something really, really pro-active today, thanks to all of your collective encouragement and support. A few days ago, when the whip came down with my job, I received an email from the PR guy at a firm I write about all the time. He was leaving the job. He referred me to the general manager, which made me think that they didn't have someone lined up. Well, I made some calls to the firm yesterday to people I know there, but no one called me back. Today, I called a contact a a neighboring firm, who actually knows the general manager at the firm I called. He told me a bit about the guy, and I asked him to recommend me there. He said no problem and was happy to help. This afternoon, the general manager called me back; I was out, and he left a messge. We eventually chatted, and he thanked me for getting in touch with him, and asked me to send over a resume and link to my portfolio. Which I did. I also sent over a lovely email. NO ONE, outside of the guy who gave me the recommendation, knows about this. Posted by: shibumi at July 15, 2017 12:01 AM (aT+Bx) 391

Was walking the dogs earlier. Both dogs stopped to sniff something. The methlab was standing straight facing NE, the rat terrier was on her right side facing NW. The rat terrier followed a scent right under the methlab, so her head was underneath the methlab.
I started to wonder if the rat terrier was going to walk completely under the methlab. The rat terrier did start to walk under the methlab but stopped directly underneath her, piddled, then continued on. Methlab never suspected a thing or cared. On non-ski days I like to check out the gun stores, and the Scheel's in Sparks is a very good sporting goods/outdoor store. Also chanced upon some inexplicably cheap shotgun ammo at the Cabela's on the interstate towards Truckee/CA. But best of all, back when I went alone, was the Washoe County shooting range complex, north. Beautiful setting, and the drive there is nice too (you pass by BLM's wild horse corrals). Last time there was perfect - probably in the high 30s, snow on the hills around the range, and I had a Mosin, ringing the gongs out at 100 and 200 (?). Also... I'm guardedly hopeful.
However, I rarely get the "I'm moving to another job" emails, so this one was odd. I just checked; I got it the day befoe the whip came down. Seems a bit... coincidental. Even if it doesn't work out, I learned something, or figured out how something I know in real life can be applied in my case. I have a lot of really great relationships with men in the industry. In fact, 99% of the people I deal with are men. Men typically like to help women; I think it makes them feel good about themselves. I can ask the men I know in the industry to help me, and I think that they'll do so without a problem. There are a lot of people I really like, and I think many would be willing to help me. So it's OK to ask. And if something good comes out if it, it will make them feel good about themselves. At least I hope so. Posted by: shibumi at July 15, 2017 12:24 AM (aT+Bx) 454

Re Probiotics. One of my mother's doctors recommended something called "kefir", which is a fermented milk concoction. I'd never heard of it, but they sell it, and looking it up, it's is the only one that can actually recolonize the gut. Most of these probiotic products, like the pills, can't colonize. They might make it down there, but they won't survive for long. When I take antibiotics, and I have to take clindomycin usually because of the RA meds I have to take, I will always take kefir along with it. Clindomycin can really wreak havoc with the gut flora and result in nasty complications. They sell some of it flavored up. If you can't stand yogurt, you'd probably gag on it as well. But if you're worried about say a c. diff infection, you can just force yourself to get over the gag. Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at July 15, 2017 01:25 AM (8O3HH) 553

"Women hate harmless men"
No--women have been tricked by feminism that the ideal man is one who is aggressive at work and always climbs higher on the corporate ladder...but at home, he lets her decide everything. Those two things are not compatible in the same person. So, the woman who is in total charge of the household wonders why her husband isn't in a better job, and then gets resentful... While the other woman, who is totally under her aggressive husband's control, starts to fantasize about "rape culture" and looks for a lawyer... Women think they know what they want. My one son who has lived with a lot of digestive distress over the years did some internet research on Acidophilus bacteria strains. The best poops I experience happen during one month of the year: When fresh cherries are available.
As far as eating quality, Ranier are the best tasting and sweetest (and the most expensive). Bing cherries are hit or miss as far as flavor and tartness, but are the most readily available. Cherries that are supposed to be black, but are red, were picked too soon and will not taste very good. Most come from Washington, but bargains can be found because a lot of cherries are grown in Michigan and other Great Lakes areas, but theyy do not have the grower/marketing co-ops like Washington. There are vendors in vans peddling B.C. cherries right now in parking lots all over Alberta.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 15, 2017 02:11 AM (AWYXL) I used to drive the corridor from Niagara Falls to Kitchener/Waterloo frequently. This was on the south side of Lake Ontario ( St. Catherine's). I was amazed at the cherry trees that had their branches propped up, to keep them from breaking from the load of fruit they were holding. This was called "fruitland". I never even thought about another part of Canada that could grow fruit, even though BC is just a stone's throw from Washington. Posted by: bergerbilder at July 15, 2017 03:02 AM (lIZQs) 655

535 Show of hands: All those who consider ourselves idiots, complete stupid fools, feeling out of place, even here?
I do for several reasons. I question whether I deserve to be included among the Horde given that I spent almost all of my working life in the two most disreputable professions -- journalism and government. Plus I have only one child who is autistic and receives disability; so I didn't perform too well in the area of raising "productive citizens" who might help Western civilization survive. Finally, while I would consider myself far more conservative than liberal there are some conservative dogmas that I occasionally question, for example, that taxation is always evil or that mass transit is always a worthless boondoggle (I use it regularly and it's a lifesaver for those times when I don't have the car). I also couldn't bring myself to vote for Trump (I absolutely was never going to vote for Hillary) although in retrospect I now wish I had. So do I really belong here or not? I enjoy and appreciate the Horde's perspective, I just wonder if I really meet the admission requirements. The fact that the popular vote became such a big issue after the election and that Trump has performed significantly better than I expected. Because I live in a blue state whose electoral votes were in the bag for Hillary no matter what, I told myself my vote wouldn't make any difference. But now I see that the popular vote does "count" in terms of public opinion.

Secret Square,
I know it's late but I don't get it, or rather what you said. I saw the last election in stark terms, the choice between a career corrupt and evil politician or 'hey, let's give the successful businessman beholden to no one in D.C. a shot'. As you have seen, the swamp is deep indeed. To mix metaphors, the pigs at the trough are squealing bloody murder because the shovelfuls of slop they greedily consume might be cut off. I have never seen a 'deep state' situation like this before. It really is an attempted coup in D.C. aided abetted by the likes of that asshole judge in Hawaii and, of course, cheered on by the Fake News Media.
