End of Week Open Thread

Portland, OR is now the country's Capital of Leftist Tantrum-Riots.

The left keeps finding new ways to shock you. Except they're the same old ways, always:

Trump's now calling for Repeal first, Replace later:

Which makes tactical sense. With no Obamacare in place, Democrats would be pretty much forced to vote for something, or else they'd take the blame for having "no health care" in the country (and I realize how dumb that sounds, but that's the language they use).

If you like heavy metal, and even if you don't, you may find this Pentagram-shaped taxonomy of Dumb Heavy Metal Band Names amusing. CAUTION: Contains names of bands which are not heavy metal.

If that link doesn't work, try this one.

Trump may be beginning the process of rolling back the Title IX Secret Rape Courts.

Chris Matthews suggests that Trump would do well to imitate Mussolini and murder his son-in-law.

Nice media you have there, colonel. Be a shame if somethin' were to 'appen to it.

Oh too bad -- something did 'appen to it. The New York Times has begun laying off copy-editors, and they're -- get this -- protesting it.

Using words including “betrayal,” “humiliating” and “covfefe” and suggesting that management had compared them to “dogs urinating on fire hydrants,” copy editors at the New York Times today let executive editor Dean Baquet and his heir apparent, Joseph Kahn, know exactly how they feel about taking the brunt of layoffs and buyouts as the Times expands its reporting ranks. The latest flare-up comes at a moment when the Times also is dealing with a libel lawsuit filed by former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin over a Times Op-Ed column erroneously linking her to violent attacks on public figures.

So sad -- just some insufficiently skilled workers who have been passed by our dynamic Global Economy, angry about their inability to compete. Maybe they should just learn IT.

Judges in the EU, who are all-knowing and all-powerful, have decided that it is better than an infant should be killed than risk a chance of a trip to the US to see if an experimental cure can help him.

The parents want to take him to the US for the treatment; the courts told them that their opinion doesn't matter, and that he should die.

Charlie’s parents have raised enough money from private donations to fund the experimental treatment, but the court decision prohibits his removal to the U.S. Whenever they see fit to do so, the doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital can now remove Charlie’s life support.

Or, as the Washington Post prefers to say:

Sometimes democracy dies in euphemism, too, huh?

If you're expecting the Vatican to protest this, well, Francis has some nuanced positions on matters of life now, it seems.

And, if you forget everything else this week, just remember-- CNN has had a month long nightmare and it's glorious.

++++

I said this the first time I heard that retarded "repeal and replace" formulation. It is guaranteed to produce much heat and no action. Everyone gets to posture that they are in favor of the repeal part, but just can't support the bill until the replace part is right. Which everyone disagrees about exactly what it should be.

I will also say that whenever they get around to the replace part, they should stay away from any kind of big comprehensive solution. Do the individual pieces one at a time. One bill for HSAs, another for insurance across state lines, etc.

Actor James Cromwell - whose credits include "American Horror Story: Asylum" and "Babe," for which he was nominated for an Oscar - has been sentenced to a week in jail for refusing to pay fines stemming from the protest of a natural-gas power plant in Wawayanda, New York.

At trial, he argued that the danger of increased carbon dioxide justified whatever means necessary. I heard an interview with him several years ago in which he discussed saving his shit for fertilizer.

That'll do, Jim. That'll do.

Those of us who work as professional copy editors do. It's easy to say that anyone who works for the NYT in any capacity deserves whatever happens to them, but the NYT's denigration of copy editing as a specific skill set may well leak into academic publishing and similar fields. I've done academic copy editing as well as writing for over 20 years now and I can tell you that copy editing is not something that just any old hack can do. And given the NYT's appalling track record of typos as well as factual errors in recent years, they can ill afford to sack the copy editors. They'd do better to can Pinch Sulzberger and Dean Baquet.

This is so horrific. I just cannot fathom how this could be allowed to happen in a civilized country.

And I do agree with you as to saving your child by any means necessary, but it seems impossible at this point. The hospital will not release the baby, and because of the publicity and the legal actions, he is under guard. How about we leave the government sanctioning out of it. Let's just say that if there is a right to end one's life, libertarian or otherwise, there should also be a right for those who wish to assist, voluntarily, to help those who need the assistance.

The only role for the government should be to make sure that the person who is deciding to die has really made that decision for themselves.

It establishes a number of things:

1) It forces the legislative weasels to take an unequivocal stand one way or another.
2) It eliminates the mandates, taxes, etc (and subsidies, and payouts, etc.) that this mess created.
3) It clarifies and makes more urgent the need to actually address the issues involved.

Someone said they should tackle items piecemeal.
That is correct. Omnibus shit is just that - shit.

That's really how Trump should spin this.

Repeal not only Obamacare, but also Dubya Bush's various forms of federal meddling in health care, in one fell swoop, and describe it simply as a return to the status quo ante of the Clinton years.

It'll be very difficult for liberals to describe that as The Most Terrible Thing To Have Happened Since Ever, since they spent most of 2016 deep in gauzy retrospectives of the Clinton 1990s as having been an earthly paradise for everyone.

I have know quite a few people suffering (and later dying) from dementia. But the whole idea of euthanasia is not truly a moral idea.

The Charlie Gard response is the end for me. I have no use for a Pope that now disregards any Christian doctrine to simply abide leftism. As I joked a long time ago when I was growing up Protestant, the Pope is a dope.

I hear you my brother.

In much of the spiritual teaching I've received during my life, it has been said many times that all of us, every last one, truly know the difference between good and evil, regardless of how we comport ourselves and what decisions we make. By extension, it has been suggested that those that believe evil actions are proper and defensible, are, in some fashion, mentally ill.

Man is flawed by nature, even the Pope. It pains me to come to the realization that our Pope suffers from mental disturbances.

California leads the nation in solar power. Nearly 14 percent of the state’s energy is generated by rooftop and utility-scale solar. And on March 11 of this year, for a brief period during midday, 40 percent of the state’s electricity was coming from the sun.

But the solar surplus comes with a problem: The state’s energy grid can’t deal with all that extra renewable energy. To avoid blackouts due to the energy glut, California actually had to pay neighboring states to take the extra energy on dozens of occasions this year.

I had a yard sale a few years after my parents died, and one of the items was a ceramic rooster that had been sitting in the dining room when I was a kid.

I wasn't trying to make money, I just wanted to get rid of some of the clutter in the house that I had no use for.

I think I sold it for a dollar. I could see the woman who bought it's face light up. I talked to her a bit and she said she collected them. I asked her what it was really worth and she said $25-$30. I smiled and said, "Good for you!"

Selling ivory is totally illegal in California, now, and they DO enforce!

I inherited some ivory statuettes from a relative who passed away, and who has long treasured them as "valuable," but I quickly learned that anything made of ivory is now valueless, because it is unsellable. I eventually hooked up with an unethical dealer who agreed to sell them under-the-table to rich Chinese collectors, for about 20% of their pre-ban "value." It was the best I could do.

Three months after this transaction, the dealer was busted for selling ivory, and went to jail as a result!

That's one of the inherent problems, no one know what anything costs, there is no practical way of "shopping around" and for all intents and purposes because of government regulation, prices are pretty much fixed for most services and procedures so there really is no way to get a better price and pay less.

389 This may be willowed, but as a former copy editor, I join the Times deskers in their protest. Political bias be damned, this is our LANGUAGE we're talking about! The means that all of us once used to communicate. Proper speech and spelling was once prized in this country. Now people like me are slammed as "grammar Nazis," and the attitude toward spelling is "I can understand what you're trying to say, and that's good enough."

Until it isn't.

I used to study the Times for its headline construction. (Wonder what that skinny one-column font is.) It had some of the smartest heds. I would try to emulate them. I worked hard to hone my craft, and I got damned good at it.

All for nothing. Copy editors are now considered to be superfluous.

People assume that if someone "wrongs" them it was done out of malice or stupidity.
In such a case they feel 110% justified in retaliating.

He pulled out in front of me even though there was no one else on the 3 lane road. Heck, I just figured that maybe he misjudged what lane I was in before pulling out. I went to pass (signaled first, checked for rear clearance) moved into the lane, and that is when he cut me off. He signaledAS he moved over.

He saw the cop the same time I did, and he speed up to let me in. The cop turned around and came after me. I was yelling at him to go after the other guy and told him what had happened. There has been a great increase in untreated mental illness since the deinstitutionalism of mental hospitals in the 1960s.

I remember thinking repeatedly, "I cannot believe this guy".
Even when he saw me take off my seat belt, unlike my car door, and get ready to roll out (I am sure he knew I had a gun), he was half out of his car motioning for me to bring it on.
If he had taken one step more I would have. Thank God he did not.

I told this story before, just recently.

I was about to pull out of a shopping center onto the main road. A woman was behind me in her car. I started to pull out, then saw a pickup truck come flying through the red light.

I slammed on my brakes, and the woman rear-ended me. We both got out, and she was all apologetic. I said, "It wasn't your fault! Did you SEE that?"

She hadn't. And of course the pickup truck who caused the accident was long gone.

536 Baby Charlie's story reminds of (IIRC) Young Sammy's story about 30 years ago. Born with a rare incurable heart condition and allowed no visitation by his parents. His father literally broke in to where he was being kept alive and quietly wept while cradling him in his arms as he died. Dont recall if it was the hospital's own institutional inertia or what that was alliwing him to die hooked up to a machine without his family being present.

542 Okay, so everyone here thinks that it is in best interests of this child to allow him to be the first subject of this experimental treatment? Because they haven't even tested it on MICE, have no idea whether it will cause the child pain. Also, the treatment is for his underlying disease, and will do nothing to reverse its severe brain damage. Maybe you all think it's merciful to live for decades with severe brain damage, but I would never choose that for myself or anyone I loved. YMMV.

546 BarcelonaCarmen: Well, some people think a chance at life is better than certain death.

And the worst thing a parent can experience is the death of a child. So, I have no problem with those parents trying anything they can to avoid that.

This story is really about Big Government acting to crush them and take away their choices. They raised the money for this experimental treatment, and they really wanted to try it (even if it might not work). They were blocked by their socialist health "care" system precisely because, if the treatment proved successful, it would make said socialist health "care" system look inferior by comparison. Can't have a socialist program look bad! Wouldn't be prudent.
