TV & Movie Thread

So no one watches the same stuff any longer so I'll just call this a TV & Movie thread, rather than a review thread.

But here are three things I've watched recently:

Twin Peaks: The Return. I think it's almost pointless to even discuss this as those who are watching already know everything I would or could say, and those who aren't watching could care less.

But yeah, let me just say it anyway: Episode 8? Wow.

Here's the beginning of the atomic bomb sequence. That sequence segued into what appears to be "The Woodsmen" entering the material plane at the notorious "Convenience Store" site.

(No second floor for them to live in, but then, we're talking about extra-spacial entities here so maybe they just created their own extradimensional room above it.)

After the bomb, we had a 2001: A Space Odyssey-style breach in the walls between the planes, a trip to the "Mauve Zone" or Purple Place that surrounds the material plane of existence, and then of course "The Woodsmen" descending on earth to prepare the way for an alien locust-frog to inhabit a human body.

The Lego Batman Movie. I watched this three times, nearly in a row. Twice in a row, then I watched it the next day.

I loved it. Adults will enjoy this -- as long as you like Batman, and are up for a parody of him.

Even though it's a parody, the movie is pretty true to the characters. The emotional heart of the movie is about a question that a lot of people have asked about Batman-- if he's such a "loner," supposedly, why does he always seem to have a Robin (or two!) and maybe a Batgirl hanging around with him?

No one calls Superman a "loner," but-- how often does Superman have a partner or protoge flying around with him? Not often. Yet Batman frequently has a group of characters around him. They serve as a surrogate family, to the point where they're even referred to (in-universe, I think, as well) as "The Bat-Family."

So the heart of the movie is about that contradiction inside Batman, that he thinks he's a loner, when he's actually... just lonely.

Oh, and besides that, it's funny.

Batman is given all the flaws we know of him -- arrogant, rude, domineering -- and a couple that aren't really part of the character as usually presented, but I think are probably true -- incredibly egotistical, and a glory-hound, and a bit of a meat-head ("Who never skips Leg Day?," Batman asks in a song he wrote about his own awesomeness, "Batman!," he answers himself).

The Robin character is well-done-- silly, funny, naive, yet not without skills. And it's great to have the Will Arnett-Michael Cera dynamic from Arrested Development back, with the scheming, narcissitic Will Arnett manipulating the naive Michael Cera.

The only character that I thought they missed the mark with is Barbara Gordon, or, as Batman calls her, "B-Go." Instead of being roughly around Robin's age, she's roughly around Batman's age. And they have Jim Gordon retire as commissioner so that she can assume that role -- why? Why not just have her appointed as head of the Major Crimes Unit? "Commissioner" isn't the only high rank in the police force.

One small other downside: There are so many villains and cameos that very few of the rogues gallery get any kind of screen-time. Joker gets the most, then Harley, and then Bane has three kind of funny lines (delivered in the Tom Hardy Bane Voice), and Catwoman has a two lines.

Still, complaining that "I wanted more" is just about the faintest criticism you can lay on a movie.

But Joker and Harley weren't very good or very funny -- Zach Galifanakis does a meh Joker, and Jenny Slate does a meh Harley, not really even bothering to imitate the Brooklyn-accented cartoon Harley. But their main role isn't humor, really, but just to set up the plot.

And the movie does in fact have one. A pretty good one, actually. And it involves -- yes it's a cliche, but this is a parody movie, after all -- the Joker getting himself captured, deliberately. And then manipulating Batman into stealing Superman's Phantom Zone projector.

Really good. This clip of the opening told me that I should rent the movie. So, check that out, and see if you think you'd be interested.

(Oh, for parents: The Joker is not very scary nor homicidal and Harley is not particularly sexualized. I mean, she's a Lego. So it's okay for kids.)

Logan. I liked this movie, but didn't love it. I think the fanbois overhyped it for me. It's pretty good, and there's a lot to like -- including Steven Merchant showing up for some reason-- but it's mostly just another X-Man movie, with government agents hunting X-Men, as usual.

And a fight in the woods. We've seen that a few times, haven't we?

Overhyped and overpraised - but still, good watchin', and worth the five bucks for a rental.

10 OK!

After ending "Twin Peaks" TWENTY-SIX years ago, will they have a problem reviving it?

Has david Lynch learned to distinguish between the things that need to be resolved at the end of an episode or two, and the things that can be left a mystery throughout a whole series?

I suspect Yes, and No, respectively.

I kind of think Batman is a dick -- he's portrayed as this surly asshole in cartoons and videogames, anyway -- so I was all ready for a takedown of him.

Still, he really is cool, even here, where he's hyper-aware of how cool he is.

He's just not AS COOL as he thinks he is.

Mr. MWR and I have spent most of our time on Netflix and anime sites, catching up with old favorites (for him; first time watches for me). Right now we're midway through "HunterXHunter" on Netflix, and just wrapped up "Little Witch Academia". And as always I'm looking forward to the next episode of "Boku no Hero Academia"!

Other than that we're just waiting for the opportune moment to binge the 12th season of "Supernatural."

yup. It got some aspects better too. There's a touching part when Batman talks to a picture of his dead parents, saying "I saved the city again today... I think you would have been proud of me," where his head is down and his voice is shy like he's a child again in their presence, which really gives you a feel for Batman's psychology better than any movie I can think of.

30 The new Peaks is almost challenging people to watch it, and I say that in a good way.

Many many moons ago I bought Peaks co-creator Mark Frost lunch, and started talking about bringing the show back... And he was being cagey even then. Once the blurry came out, and they sold out (HUGE numbers) they had the "ammo" to be able to cut the deal to get the show financed.

AND complete creative control... As you have seen.

Which is awesome.

31 Movie-wise I WANT to see Wonder Woman, but just haven't gotten around to it. I'm not crazy enthused to see it, though I've wanted a WW movie since I was born (or at least it feels that way!).

The next movie I WANT to see, and absolutely WILL see, is Dunkirk. Christopher Nolan has yet to disappoint, and it has an incredible cast. Though I admit I'm a little nervous about the casting of Harry Styles (of One Direction fame). It's not that I doubt his acting chops - I'm sure he'll be fine - but it means that for at least the first week every showing will be packed with 1D fangurrrls squeeing and giggling. As a fangirl once upon a time myself I get it; but that doesn't make it any less annoying during a serious film. I just hope they walk out of the theater knowing a little bit more about history than they knew when they walked in.

45 Ace:

"Harley is not particularly sexualized. I mean, she's a Lego. So it's okay for kids."

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn has made such an impression on the collective psyche of young femalehood in America that her "style" in Suicide Squad is already majorly influencing real-world teen fashions, and is predicted to be a major influencer for years to come. She's one of those rare actress/character combinations that

a. Boys want to fuck;
and
b. Girls want to be.

Usually it's one or the other.

I'm trying to recall other major influencers from film roles like this. I think Brigitte Bardot in "And God Created Woman" has a similar influence on French fashion for many years. Oh yeah -- Dianne Keaton in "Annie Hall" apparently majorly influenced (in a horrible way) '70s fashion.

Any other examples folks can think of?

46 So someone give me the basic gestalt:

- A flakey media newsbabe brags that her facelift was in fact just a touch-up
- that has a weird, dumb, loser "musician" boyfriend
- and both end up making national headlines together for all the wrong reasons

- casting couches
- casting coaches
>casting coaches on casting couches

- a hologram of Carrie Fisher

- another bad actor with forgettable name quietly and slowly descends into the abyss of forgotten movie yore

Is this real life?

Or Hell?

And find out Hell requires that a 1974 'Magic Mushroom' Chevy Van, smelly Euro/Arab "film" producers, nice, naive Midwestern amateurs looking for their big break, and being forced to live in the Valley 1978 are prereqs.

"Logan"....liked it, didn't love it. But a nice exit for those characters and the actors.

"Lego Batman" - liked it quite a bit, was pretty much smiling throughout.

I think the "joke" of the Joker in this movie is that he was the straight man that "zany" Batman was playing off of.

But, yeah, too bland even for the straight man joke. And Harley almost wasn't there. truly lousy portrayal.

I have yet to be disappointed with Marvel Studios films - even the OK ones had great moments and were fun (as opposed to the DC Snyder-verse slate of emo heroes).

IIRC - the second wave of SM films after the Toby-trilogy were a combination of Sony attempting to create their own cinematic universe (which failed after AMSM2) and retaining the rights to the character (hence why there was also a F4 reboot a couple years ago - which also tanked).

Sony figured out to leave it Marvel Studios and shared the SM property. But the upcoming Venom is not slated to have SM in it at all.

83 Latest movie I have seen:

"I Love You Philip Morris," starring Jim Carrey and Ewan MacGregor.

I totally missed it when it was first released several years ago, so I had no preconceptions.

But after watching it, I can see why it failed.

Tells the story of a despicable con-man who realzies halfway through the film that he is gay.

And because of his new-found totally flamboyant gayness, we're suddenly supposed to LIKE him. Just because he is gay.

And then at the end of the film they have som infuriating anti-Republican joke-captions on the screen that made no sense, and tried to blame the character's misdeeds on George Bush or something ridiculous. Grrrr.

But worst of all, throughout the film we are subjected to Jim Carrey engaged in totally X-rated gay porn acts. Like, halfway through the film, we see him naked, covered in sweat, pounding a guy in the ass, while the guy says, "Yeah! Fuck my ass, Dump your hot load in my ass cavity!" and Jim Carrey says "I'm coming! I'm coming! Here comes my jizz in your ass!" and then he does a rodeo lasso gesture over his head as he comes.

There are about 8 scenes like this throughout the film. Just to demonstrate that he is in fact gay.

Seriously, is this necessary?

Short review: Avoid this film.

As far as I know, any other Commonwealth and colonial troops were in the mideast and Asia.

Weird historical fact:

In WWI, France had a couple divisions of Senegalese troops who, when they took any German territory, apparently behaved VERY badly, and did a lot of raping of German girls. This received much publicity in Germany at the time, and was apparently one of the things that really turned Adolph Hitler into a total racist.

Walter Lord examined that. he maintained that it was a combination of concern by high command of gravely overextended armored columns (they were), lagging infantry (leg, not motorized) and the belief held by all experts until after June 1944 that any movement of troops was possible only via a large, well defended, intact port. Dunkirk was none of these. The British didn't think that they could save nearly that many.

There were claims made later, but communiques at the division level at the time showed them gladly pausing to regroup, stabilize supplies and for infantry to catch up.

I haven't seen the CGI, so I can't really compare.

My main issue with the live action films is that they have to compress a LOT of story into two relatively short movies, so you lose a lot of depth. I really enjoyed them, but I can think of many ways they could have been improved with more time.

The ending gunfight was a little anti-climactic and hard to believe (both at the same time -- I know, it's an odd combination), but it was a pretty good movie.

217 I watched the latest season of The Flash, and it's my last one. By the 3/4 point, I was wishing it was the 4/4 point. Gripes? I have a few --

1. Everyone has super speed by now. They should introduce a speedy dog, then a speedy cat, then a speedy hamster to capture the Richard Gere fans.

2. The plot grows weaker. I'm down to rooting for casualties by now.

3. Inconsistency. You need a speed suit, or you don't, or the helmet part is optional, depending on no particular logic.

4. In a brand new trick, one episode is a two part-er, with the 2nd episode only available on The Arrow series. Yeah, I'm NOT biting.

5. Chaste. I swear, a group of nuns must be deciding how much flesh to show, let alone any horniness. PG-2, your rating is safe here. Speedy dog, when inevitably introduced, won't be humping any legs.

Odd, but I never 'liked' Garibaldi. Parts reminded me of the Die Hard movies and John McClain.

In the story the writers 'mess with reality' and once reality, as far as the movie goes, has been altered, there is no way for a character to recover from that.

Like in that old TV series 'the prisoner', once you have made your character crazy, there is no going back to mr nice guy ever again. When you can't trust your own perceptions, you can't trust anything or anyone again.

They've actually created a series of characters I care about, which is quite an accomplishment. I recommend it highly.

I'm not the biggest fan of The LEGO Movie, but it works as a movie. A lot of jokes do feel scattershot, but it all feels in service to the basic story.

good review, and true. I get what you're saying about the Nolan batman films. What I always want to point out to people about those movies is that while the villains and the environment were "dark," Batman himself definitely wasn't -- he was Lawful Good and proud of it.

I wish Zach Snyder could understand this.

To not only mistake Batman as Chaotic Evil but then to think "Oh that means Superman is Chaotic Evil too I guess" is an incredible misreading of the material.

242 169 Aquaman strikes me as being in the Knight Boat vein. There has to be a river or canal or ocean near for there to be any action.

Here's what I don't get. His big "superpower" is communicating with fish.

So every time he's wrapped up by some giant squid or octopus or whatever, why does it takes him 20 minutes to remember: "Hey, I can just call my fish friends to come help me."

Which is still all wrong, because he could just tell the giant squid or octopus or whatever "Hey, lemme go!"

Aquaman is tarded.

I don't get the whole concept. (I did not see Cars 1 and 2.) I consider it too lame for adults, and it seems most of the plot and dialogue would go right over the heads of the kids it's aimed at. (Like Rocky and Bullwinkle was.) And of course, SJW morality was properly teed-up for Cars 4; at the end of 3 the new hero of the race track is a heroine, an Hispanic-surnamed female car. Boys will have to be content in the following installments with seeing male cars being losers on the track or being the racer's coach and mentor.

I was also forced to watch a zillion animated kids movies trailers before Cars 3, and I have the same opinion about all of them as I do for Cars 3. At any rate, what I loved was that, despite having a loving relationship with Harlequin as opposed to an abusive one, and despite his non existent body count, this version of the Joker is much, much more destructive than Ledgers. I don't think any incarnation comes close. Most are satisfied with joke-themed murder or a stalkerish relationship with Batman. This version unleashes the apocalypse on Gotham, and the end should show damage that rivals a war. It's a kids movie, so that isn't explicit, but then I don't think child friendly and consequential should.be opposites.

291 I managed to find some of the SKY tv Discworld Pratchett movies on the interwebs.

Hog's Watch
Stars Michelle Dockery of Dowtown Abby fame. Hog's Watch is the Christmas night in the alternate-earth known as Discworld. The conceit is that someone is trying to kill the analogue of Santa Klaus of Discworld, the HogFather. (he's a orc-like guy who has boars for his sleigh team instead of reindeer).

The personification of Death descides he must help save Hog's Watch in case the HogFather never returns. Death's granddaughter is manuevered into helping out, and many and sundry plotty things occur.

I don't know if this version was a working cut or some early print because production value is schzophrenic.

The sound mix is terrible - they use sound stage audio in portions. The music is cut and pasted here and there. The direction is awkward and stiff. But the production design is very neat.

That said, the story is fun as most Prachett's stuff is. Semi-kid friendly though lots of bloodless murders and people being pushed off ledges.

Going Postal
The story revolves around a con-man who is sentenced to death and is given a 'last second' repreive if he can reopen the Post office of Ank-Morpork (the largest city in Discworld.)

This was great fun. Everything that was creaky in the Hog's Watch movie is fixed in this one. Editing, sound, music all much better. A few sequences were a bit shoddy but all in all a fun flick.

298 I don't get the whole concept. (I did not see Cars 1 and 2.) I consider it too lame for adults, and it seems most of the plot and dialogue would go right over the heads of the kids it's aimed at.

I only saw the original "Cars" and at least it had some subtle humor for adults (the female car with a "tramp stamp" on her backside), and had the real life underlying theme of small towns along old US 66 being by-passed by Interstate 40.

Last movie voice role (I think) for the late George Carlin as a hippie VW Bus, and Paul Newman as a retired race car turned into stately sedan.

Or do I read too much into things?

Yup. And, he was, to some extent, troubled by when his passions got the better of him. The classic "There Is No Hope In Crime Alley" is typical.

>>I wish Zach Snyder could understand this.

To not only mistake Batman as Chaotic Evil but then to think "Oh that means Superman is Chaotic Evil too I guess" is an incredible misreading of the material.

Apparently, when Burlington College President Jane Sanders (the wife of Bernie Sanders) took controll under the sale of the adjacent land from the diocese, it came with the understanding that Burlington College would relocate the residents of a home for the disabled.
In a lengthy letter to the attorney (Todd Centybear) representing the group home for the disabled Jane indicates that she's having trouble evicting the 16 residents from their building on the newly purchased property after the college had acquired the land. She writes: "It is simply not fair to expect the College to continue to carry the burden of the expenses associated with housing both your population and ours until February 2012." The home for the disabled was being leased from the diocese and Jane was supposed to help relocate the residents, not evict them. The exchange shows, not only Jane's heartlessness, but also her incompetence as the college president for not ensuring the negotiated transfer of those disabled people before the school took over the property.

359 Wreck it Ralph has a moment that's almost as good.

As he's falling down to the Mentos mountain (it makes sense in context, I swear), and he begins to recite the Bad Guy Anonymous creed ("I'm bad, and that's good.").

It works really well, and then the movie gets him safely away and keeps going, taking a perfect ending and sullying it.

To Lose a Battle, by Alistair Horne
Panzer Leader, by Heinz Guderian
Strange Defeat, by Marc Bloch (written in 1940 by a French soldier, who was later executed by the Nazis for Resistance activity)
The Fall of France, by Julian Jackson
Strange Victrory, by Ernest May

Each has strengths and weaknesses. But I cannot too highly recommend To Lose a Battle and Strange Defeat.

Thank you for this. Two of these, I have read.

My 6 -year-old son loves Dog Man, by the same creators, and he really enjoyed it CU. I did have to mention to him that no matter how funny someone's name sounds, it's not nice to laugh at it right in front of them.

At the climax of Lego Batman, the story has gotten to the point that someone has to do something heroic. My son, who hasn't seen countless movies, tv shows, and books with the same basic plot points, was convinced this would end badly and was weeping, openly and loudly. But otherwise he loved the flick.

Posted by: Grump928(c)

To be fair, I didn't really "act" -- because I was an "extra"!

Even worse, this was so long ago, that Will Smith's role was cut from the final version of the film, so it's not really a "Will Smith" film. I think he had already contracted for it, than got famous in the interim, started filming a few scenes reluctantly, and then dropped out of filming abruptly, so they just redid the script and removed his (fairly minor) role entirely, rather than replace him.

Back in Younger Days, I lived in LA for a while, and like a lot of young folks in LA, made some $$$ doing extra work.

I've been saying that since Burton, I think. =My= Batman, almost certainly a reaction to the excesses of the TV show (which I can appreciate now but hated as a kid) was a detective in tights with, basically, a rope and grappling hook, solving some weird mysteries.

That's actually pretty true to the original, '40s version, too. Before the '50s excess which led to the TV show parody thereof.

399 Count me as one who was watched Vikings from the beginning, and actually enjoys where they've taken the series. They ran through the arc of what they could do with Ragnar's character - the rise, the fall, the rise of his sons. When he died , it was time for him to die.

Besides, they're following old Norse tales, so you knew from the start that Ragnar was going to have to die in one of Aella's snake pits. That's how the story goes.

I felt that they came up with a great way to reboot the show by bringing on the next generation, who are even more definite historical characters than Ragnar was. Ivar the Boneless is about to spend 15 years rampaging all across Britain at the head of the Great Heathen Army, destroying everything but a bit of Wessex. Then young Alfred is finally going to bounce back and defeat him, and earn the appellation "The Great".

In four generations, Rollo's great grandson is going to be named William, and he's going to wipe out all of Alfred's kinsmen while earning the name "The Conqueror". And I think the show is going to follow a bunch of the norsemen while they take a trip to go conquer Sicily, and then lead the crusades.

This story can go on and on, because it did.

I mention these two not only because they are my favorites so far, but because they are a good introduction to anime in that they demonstrate the peculiar strength of the medium. That is, neither would work nearly as well in live action, if at all.

Anyway, it's fun to try something new, even if you're an old bat stuck in her ways (at the tender age of 29.)

417 "Did they include his apocryphal death quote "How the little piglets would grunt if they knew how the old boar suffered."?"

Yes! And it's made into a semi-major plot point; that's pretty much what brings on the Great Heathen Army.

419 Mr. Cat and I watched The Wilderpeople and just loved it. The Brits seem to have an incredible talent for putting out these wonderful little movies that cost pennies to make, no CGI, no spex, just telling stories that are so far off the wall you wonder where the wall went. Waking Ned Devine. The Secret of Inish Roan. Mr. Holmes. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Bend It Like Beckham. Hollywood seems to have lost its way, equating money spent to how good the movie is. (Not that I won't spend a small fortune to see Thor: Ragnarok in Imax 3D.)

420 Netflix has a new show called GLOW. I really enjoyed it!

It's about the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, which those few of you guys and gals who are older than 29 might remember from the 80s.

I remember it fondly, as an adolescent boy at the time. Hot gals in skimpy outfits tossing each other around and grunting...

Anyway! This show stars the adorable Alison Brie, who I know a lot of you guys loved on Community. And she gets naked! Aww, yeah!

The wrestling characters are not what I remember; I'm guessing that they were re-envisioned because, well, it's kind of a legal grey area as to who actually owns a wrestling character, whether it's the wrestler or the promotion. So, for example, Mt. Fiji becomes Macchu Picchu.

There are some hints tossed in to suggest the actual real-world counterparts to these rasslin' gals. For example, "Brittanica" (as in, Encyclopedia Brittanica) boasts at one point that the show's director is going to buy her a horse. Well, Brittanica doesn't need a horse, but the real-life GLOW gal she's based on, Godiva... yeah, riding a horse to the ring totally suited that character.

There was no Cold War element in the real-life GLOW (the characters whose rivalry really drove the show were a pair of high-society party-girl "frienemies"), but they were re-envisioning all the characters, anyway, and it was the 80s, so, why not? It makes sense.

Overall, I found the show greatly enjoyable. I liked getting to see the proverbial sausage being made, and I really liked seeing "Annie's Boobs" in a context other than that of a monkey character with a silly name.

421 Oh! Another minor detail about GLOW that jumped out at me. I just happened to notice on one of the episodes that the director was Melanie Mayron, and the girls went to a roller rink where the song Car Wash was playing.

If you've seen the movie Car Wash, and were paying attention during the credits, you might remember Melanie Mayron as the one girl working at the Car Wash, the girl who got pranked in the restroom and was sleeping with the boss.

Incidentally, Car Wash was a terrible movie. It was written by the awful Joel Schumacher, who would later go on to wreck the Batman franchise for a generation. If you see the movie at your local DVD retailer, you'll probably see Richard Pryor and George Carlin on the cover, which would tend to suggest that they're the stars and it would have to be a good movie as a result, but no; they just put in cameo appearances.

Awful movie; I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But seeing Mayron's name on the credits and then hearing that song during that episode... yeah, okay; that's kind of a cool reference.

422 My wife and I coincidentally watched "Lego Batman" for the first time, last night. It wasn't the movie I was hoping to see. It felt like it was written by people who've read about Batman--or perhaps liked Nolan's TDK trilogy, but were never really fans of the character overall.

It felt like it was done by South Park's "Family Guy" manatees that likewise wrote "Star Trek: Into Darkness", SW:TFA, and other modern piecemeal nostalgia movies.

But, I tend to be pretty cynical about movies--so more power to those who enjoyed the flick.

424 I thoroughly enjoyed Lego Batman, but I looooooved Logan, and I could really give two shits about the X-men.

Maybe it's deep-seated Daddy issues, who knows, but that movie tore me up.

425 @413, Bill. Of the two of us, clearly I must have been the one watching it. I literally laughed out loud in the theatre when, in one of the first scenes, a group of white kids in a limo were standing up in the sunroof right next to the border wall chanting USA over and over again. I could go much further, but if you didn't imnediately see the intentional tone, I'd borrow your wife's make up mirror and inspect yourself for the nose-ring by which you're being led around. Cheers!
