Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Heat St. Website Folding; Greta Van Sustern Leaving MSNBCIt started out as a decent internet venture, until co-founder Louise Mensch began, well, let's say "her episodes." Apparently those episodes were part of the reason Fox News didn't want to buy it. (Though it's still owned by News Corp, Fox's parent company -- it will be folded into News Corp's "MarketWatch.)News Corp's conservative digital media site Heat Street is folding in August, the company told BuzzFeed News on Thursday. ... Heat Street, which has about 15 employees, launched as a right-of-center digital media upstart in an increasingly crowded conservative media field, taking on sites like Breitbart, the Daily Caller, IJR, and the Blaze. Fox News had explored acquiring Heat Street, The Wall Street Journal reported in May. Two people familiar with the matter confirmed the talks to BuzzFeed News. One of the people said that Rupert Murdoch, who controls both News Corp and 21st Century Fox, pushed for the deal, but that Fox didn't want to take on the property, in part because Mensch's recent Twitter crusade.Meanwhile, MSNBC and Greta Van Susteren are splitsville: [A] few days shy of her six-month mark on air, Van Susteren’s business is finished on MSNBC, according to people familiar with the situation. The anchor, whose show struggled to gain traction even as the rest of her colleagues were buoyed by anti-Trump hysteria, has parted ways with the network. She will not appear on the show on Thursday evening. She will be permanently replaced by Ari Melber, the network’s chief legal correspondent and host of the The Point on weekends. He will continue to appear across NBC and MSNBC shows as he takes over the 6 p.m. slot next month. (MSNBC and NBC News declined to comment. Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Van Susteren had no comment.) Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I actually wrote for a conservative startup website, and they gave it like 3 months, then stopped paying anyone and folded shop because it didn't make money.
That is not how you do business. You assume losses the first year while you build clientele. I think that is true for Hollywood also. They have a lot of expenses to cover and not all movies make a profit. As long as most of their money comes home to roost, and as long as they can find more investors looking for the right vehicle, they can continue to make movies. I would guess that blogging is a lot like that, the more money you make, the more expenses you have to cover. I, of course, am doing it for the love of words, and not for the money. I'm a bit bitter about the collapsing conservative website thing though I guess. At the highest point of my blog's popularity, I got asked on by the Washington Examiner to write bits for them and this new start up website. They both shut down about the same time, and the startup just didn't bother paying for my last month's work. I was in contact with the main coordinator, they owed him tens of thousands of dollars. 62 I'm a bit bitter about the collapsing conservative website thing though I guess. At the highest point of my blog's popularity, I got asked on by the Washington Examiner to write bits for them and this new start up website. They both shut down about the same time, and the startup just didn't bother paying for my last month's work. I was in contact with the main coordinator, they owed him tens of thousands of dollars. Never gonna see any of it.

Sounds like the 'ettes are waxing euphoric over knick-knacks, that bane of male existence.
A friend's wife is a (not) recovering knick-knack collector. There literally isn't a horizontal surface in their house that doesn't have half a dozen knick-knacks on it. (I'm not exaggerating.) My friend said that when his wife went on a trip he toyed with the idea of renting a dumpster, but decided against it. But he was considering the strategem of another friend, who gave one of his buddies a couple of hundred bucks, then talked his wife into having a yard sale of knick-knacks, which the buddy then bought and threw away. Pure genius. We don't have that problem. First, Mrs. Guevara isn't into it. And second, we have a golden retriever whose long plumey tail is at exactly 1.01X coffee table height. When I was in seventh grade, I took a class called "Mechanical Drawing" -- basically, how to do architectural and engineering blueprints. (It was an elective you could take to get out of "Shop" or "Home Ec.") Was a great class -- should be a requirement, actually.
Anyway, in the class, the teacher handed out these erasers designed to erase all the mistakes we were inevitably going to make. When I first used it -- made out of some white rubbery substance -- I thought to myself, "Damn, this is a good freakin' eraser!" It was pretty big, too. At the end of class, I kept the eraser -- even after one semester's use, it was still 98% intact. And for the rest of junior high and high school, it was my go-to eraser -- the best eraser I had ever encountered. Then I brought it to college. Used it there too. Then I got my own place and tossed it into the desk drawer, where I continued to use it. Fast forward to today, Xxx years later, and I STILL am using that eraser! Barely even half gone by now. Truly the best eraser ever made. Anyway, I relate this tale to explain the kind of life I lead, when it comes to product consumption. I hang on to the good stuff, and just use it forever. The same it true of many many other objects in my life. (For example, when my grandfather died when I was a kid, I "inherited" a pair of pliers he had in his garage. "Drop-forged in Utica, New York" it has stamped on it. To this day, I use that pair of pliers, and have never bought a replacement. Etc.) I am capitalism's worst nightmare. I mean, get the basics that can be used in anything but also get specific things for specific food I can make if only I had the supplies. The frustrating thing is that a lot of it won't last the whole month and we only get groceries once a month so I get real creative interesting stuff done the first week or so then its down to what survives longer on the shelf.

Trump's still in Russia trouble as evidenced by the special prosecutor going after his inner circle, the baddest of the inner circle guy is what's his name, who punched a reporter way back in last years campaign, and who was the guy who physically dragged Jorge Ramos out of the presser way back last year sometime. A lot of that is because we know this place is special and don't want it taken away. Hmm, I guess it's similar to how we feel protective of the U.S., but I hadn't thought of that before. As for specific jackassery, most of us recognize that we have our own "issues" and so manage to be pretty tolerant of others. Which is in return a big part of what makes the HQ special. Another take is that men are more rational and goal-oriented and women more emotional and experience-oriented.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 29, 2017 07:25 PM (39g3+) Here's my take/guess: women shop partly for social hierarchy reasons, seen most notably in clothes shopping. The question is where having this item would place them in the social hierarchy. Is it last year's fashion? Anathema. Is it chic right now? Let me at it. Men generally don't care about that (except in respect of cars); they buy something because they need it and/or want it, and don't really consider how "the guys" will view it. I like Harbor Freight just because I find tools that make DIY tasks so much easier. I've learned that it's worthwhile buying the right tool (whether or not at Harbor Freight) for a job, even if you think the job will never come up again. Because it invariably does, sooner or later. Bluebell,
My wife's sister just gave her a bunch of cucumbers she wants turned into dill pickles. They are not pickling cukes and they are pretty long. But I'll try to do what I can. Three problems with non-pickle cucumbers: they are seedy; the skins are tough, cucumber flavor is lacking. Posted by: bergerbilder at June 29, 2017 08:07 PM (lIZQs) 500

Basically, who is the head ramrod who can discipline them when they keep going off the rails like this?
Congress has the power to impeach judges and remove them from their position. They can also decide what federal courts are and are not able to decide on, their field of adjudication. I don't remember off the top of my head but in 200 years of US history, I think it was less than a dozen federal judges have been impeached by congress, though. And there have been some truly horrendous things decided by judges. Almost all of them were guilty of various other crimes, not judicial incompetence or abuse of power. You know, in the ancient pre-web days, people sometimes knew each other online through Bulletin Boards. These tended to have a locale because of phone rates, and so a majority of members would live in driving distance.
People used to meet at pizza places, and the gatherings were called MUPTs or Modem User Pizza Thingies. Kind of cool that people over greater distances can share interests, but sad that physical gatherings are now an odd and rare thing (for such groups). Too bad NextDoor is such a whiny needly schoolmarm's HOA-fest. Good old harbor freight. Well it's like this, tools used to be made way better some years back, so if you have an older name brand tool its probably better than the current made stuff of the same brand. Since a lot of the name brand stuff is made in china these days, comparing that stuff to harbor fright Chinese stuff isn't much of a comparison. Older "professional" name brand tools pretty much shit on anything harbor freight sells.
I had stuff from harbor freight die pretty quick, and I had some stuff last. You have to know what to buy. Some of it is pretty good, some is absolute shit. Posted by: Berserker- Dragonheads Division at June 29, 2017 08:14 PM (aMlLZ) 524

I really dig the way this guy will stick a little two-tweet jab in first thing in the morning, then disappear and go do adult stuff the rest of the day while they stew in their own juices about it, spamming F5 on their browsers on his twitter timeline, waiting for Daddy to get back home from work. It's glorious, I think. Posted by: Warai-otoko at June 29, 2017 08:45 PM (hcyUh) 585

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 29, 2017 08:46 PM (XUcIQ) Can't you just put on an ad-block-blocker-blocker extension? Posted by: Warai-otoko at June 29, 2017 08:48 PM (hcyUh) 587
I want to add- Anyone that plans and goes to a meet up , you will find that these are the brightest , most engaging people there are.
I did one and am so looking forward to the second. Posted by: Ben Had at June 29, 2017 08:49 PM (zk6Eg) 588
I had to make up the recipes (per se) except the seasoning, which I had written down - and it's just a list.
I really don't have recipes, or measure things. I just cook pretty much all my own food for the last, um, life. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at June 29, 2017 08:51 PM (wB8Tg) 589
That's funny, Twitchy doesn't seem to mind AB or ABP.

Ben Had @ 587- You have one this Saturday, right? You are less that 2 hours from me but I have to work. Mrs. E wants a new deerstand.

Don't you realize that you are feeding on the dead corpse of a thread? It is Dead, Jim! Dead! The beautiful people have moved on to another thread, one of Ace's greatest ever. Well, anyway, a new thread. Go you wild Corgis, go!

I just tried making my popcorn recipe so I have all my ducks in a row before submitting it, and it didn't turn out quite like I expected. It still tastes fine, but the volume wasn't what it should be, which calls my measurements into question. There were also more unpopped kernels than usual.
I think maybe the popcorn might have been stale. I don't know if I have enough time to buy a fresh jar and try it again before the deadline. Posted by: rickl at June 29, 2017 09:15 PM (sdi6R) 596
