Quotes of The Day

Quote I

One of the things the government can't do is run anything. The only things our government runs are the post office and the railroads, and both of them are bankrupt. Lee Iacocca

Quote II

There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. Henry Ford

Quote III

I think I've owned all the models of iPods so far. And these days between my iPod, iPhone and my personal laptop computer, I'm someone who is very, very grateful for all the ways to listen to music and completely switch off from people around me and listen to the music in detail, which is very hard to do if you're in a room with other people. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull

*****

My late Father-in-Law was a model railroad enthusiast who spent hours on 2 different sets. I don't see him using these figures if he were alive today. h/t Hank Curmudgeon

Black Rappers calling other Black men N***** is ok. Calling women Whores or Sluts is fine. Sing about the wanton destruction of human life and private property those are acceptable behaviors. But as an artist, don't you dare call for orderly and legal immigration.

In a Facebook statement yesterday, Castle Face Records criticized comments that musician couple Doris and Matthew Melton made during an interview with the French publication Still in Rock. While the California-based record label can’t pull the album it released in May, it vowed to donate profits from sales to charity.

“We’re horrified and ashamed by this, and we appreciate people being upset but respectful in letting us know how they felt about it,” the record label posted on Facebook.

Here's hoping this band goes on to making bigger and better albums and laughing all the way to the bank.

Homosexuality. Illegal Aliens. Tax Dollars. Stir them all together and what do you get? A $20,000 musical.

“Using the Mime Troupe’s signature style of broad, physical theater, the work will explore immigration, gun violence, the opioid epidemic, depression, the public education system, and racial tensions, and how they relate to societal health,” according to the grant for the project. “Portions of the work will be developed through playmaking workshops in California’s Central Valley with low-income youth, inmates, and migrant workers.”

Right, wrong or otherwise, the U.S.A. is playing the role of the world's policeman. U. S. Special Forces spread throughout the world.

Those numbers, however, only hint at the true size and scope of this global special ops effort. Last year, America’s most elite forces conducted missions in 138 countries—roughly 70 percent of the nations on the planet, according to figures supplied to TomDispatch by U.S. Special Operations Command.

Halfway through 2017, U.S. commandos have already been deployed to an astonishing 137 countries, according to SOCOM spokesman Ken McGraw.

The ONT chuckles, We told you so!!

According to a new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research:

Using a variety of methods to analyze employment in all sectors paying below a specified real hourly rate, we conclude that the second wage increase to $13 reduced hours worked in low-wage jobs by around 9 percent, while hourly wages in such jobs increased by around 3 percent. Consequently, total payroll fell for such jobs, implying that the minimum wage ordinance lowered low-wage employees’ earnings by an average of $125 per month in 2016. Evidence attributes more modest effects to the first wage increase. We estimate an effect of zero when analyzing employment in the restaurant industry at all wage levels, comparable to many prior studies.

The ONT Musical Interlude

June 27, 2002, One day before the scheduled first show of The Who's 2002 US tour, bass player John Entwistle, died aged 57 in his hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Entwistle had gone to bed that night with a stripper, who woke at 10am to find Entwistle cold and unresponsive. The Las Vegas medical examiner determined that death was due to a heart attack induced by an undetermined amount of cocaine. via thisdayinmusic.com

1987, Whitney Houston became the first women in US history to enter the album chart at No.1 with 'Whitney' she also became the first woman to top the singles chart with four consecutive releases when 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' hit No.1. via thisdayinmusic.com

Had a young white male from Iowa burnt a mosque, we would all know about it. Young black Muslim woman, not so much.

A 22-year-old Muslim woman was arrested in Iowa after she was caught by security cameras setting fire to her own mosque.

From The Des Moines Register:
Police in Iowa arrested a 22-year-old woman suspected of starting a small fire at an Iowa mosque Thursday morning.

Des Moines firefighters and police were called to the Islamic Center of Des Moines about 10 a.m. There had been a small fire on the carpet, according to a Des Moines police report.

Perhaps this should have been in the Quotes of The Day, "If you are still somehow paranoid about something this ridiculously stupid, I insist that use a condom. Mainly to stop you from reproducing." One of the ONT's favorite science sites.

Tuition and fees at Lewis University are $29,040 USD without financial aid. With room, board, and other fees combined, total cost of attendance is $42,100 USD. Obviously Lewis University doesn't overcharge their students. They are seeking a Coordinator for Social Justice Pilgrimages.

“Pilgrimages are a unique combination of educational study, faith-based reflection, and social justice immersion,” the University Ministry’s website notes. “Through these immersive experiences, students will become educated about a current world social issue, grow deeper in their faith, and be inspired to work toward a more peaceful and just society.”

Historically, June has always been the most popular month for weddings. The age of first marriages for men around the world.

Addiction, is it a disease? Or is it a behavioral issue? Treating addiction as a disease makes it harder to treat.

Botticelli’s analogy doesn’t work. No amount of reward or punishment can alter the course of, say, brain cancer. It is an entirely autonomous biological condition. Imagine threatening to impose a penalty on a brain cancer victim if her vision or speech continued to worsen or to offer of $1 million if she could stay well. It wouldn’t matter.

Legalized pot. Conflicting data on car accidents.

With marijuana legalization on the horizon, Canada may be looking south of the border for clues as to how cannabis impacts vehicle collision rates. But a pair of American studies released last week came came to seemingly opposite conclusions on whether rising marijuana use is causing an increase in car crashes in states that have legalized the drug.

85 Portions of the work will be developed through playmaking workshops in
California's Central Valley with low-income youth, inmates, and migrant
workers.

Just what those people need, learning how to write semi-literate play scripts where they whine about what sad, little victims they are. "semi-literate" is generous.
If whoever came up with this useless program really cared about low-income youth, inmates, and migrants, they'd put the money toward literacy or job training programs.

It was in Missouri -- if she wasn't a teacher, it would be fine. Age of consent is 17. The crime is the teacher-student relationship.

These ages of consent vary, with special "Romeo and Juliet" exceptions. I think in Missouri, it's 14, provided the other party is under 21. That's not criminal. But if the other party is 21+, the minimum is 17.

In some cases, you get ridiculous things where the sex is legal, but taking pictures of it is not.

On Tuesday, 8,500 African migrants are reaching Italian shores aboard 14 different ships, adding to the 5,000 who arrived on Monday. The massive arrivals have led local media as well as politicians to speak of an authentic immigrant “invasion” exceeding the country’s capacity of assimilation.

Officials reported on June 15 that more than 65,000 migrants had arrived since the beginning of the year, but that was prior to the latest influx. Figures for the year now stand at 73,380 migrants into Italy, or a rise of 14.42 percent over the same period in 2016, when then-record arrivals had reached 64,133.

166 Addition is a "sorta" disease. It's a disease in that BEING an addict isn't something you should be ashamed of. It's not a disease in that you are responsible for your actions. It's a disease in that you must have help and others should help you. It isn't a disease in that others can't fix things by acting on you: you have to act on yourself. The problem is that our notion of "disease" is basically something that can primarily be fixed by someone else acting on your body, and this is not true of addiction, but our notion of moral responsibility imagines an essentially unlimited scope of free will over purely cognitive (as opposed to emotive) events, and this is not true under compulsion.

The notion of "compulsive behavior" is one that many systems of ethics break down on. Best not to adopt simple psychologies. Biology is complicated. Minds are even more complicated.

168 That is an interesting story in your link. Not owning a smart phone, I cannot really comment. But it seems to me there should be a ready market for "blinders" and "earmuffs" to put on smartphones, to render them blind and deaf to their surroundings, until the user decides to permit them to see/hear.

Or else hack the phone to put in a shorting switch for the mic.

Oh, another one I almost forgot. Senior year of high school. Another smoking hottie teacher joined the faculty. I remember her name, but won't say it. She would walk by the gym, during lunch, and all the boys would hoop and holler.

She made out like she was appalled and the principal told us, uh them to stop it now, boys, or I'm gonna get mad, but damn, if she didn't keep walking by.

And a couple of coaches (and boy, I hated those guys -- parodies of "dumb jock", they were) would try to put moves on her. The head football would visibly suck in his gut, and tense his muscles and strut. Peacocking.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at June 27, 2017 10:55 PM (rZ+mb)

Well yeah, I agree. But that's a (useful) social standard, not a purely biological one. In most disease, we don't hold people responsible for the progression of the disease itself (ie if someone gets cancer, we on't say "You did something wrong, so it went to your liver".) But in addiction, people are held responsible for the progression of the disease (ie worsening behavior). So in that way, we don't see it so much as a disease. But everybody who looks at an addict sees a person who needs help, and feels we should help them, which is how we DO look at disease.

It just doesn't fit neatly into intuitions about "disease". In a philosophical way, addicts were far better served by ideas of demonic possession, frankly: the psychology was better, even if the science (and therapy) sucked.

217 But everybody who looks at an addict sees a person who needs help, and feels we should help them, which is how we DO look at disease.

I don't generally feel that way. Addicts made their choice long before (excepting, of course, those who got addicted out of no fault of their own) and that is where the responsibility ultimately lies. That their addiction gets worse is no excuse. THey still hold full responsibility.

It just doesn't fit neatly into intuitions about "disease". In a philosophical way, addicts were far better served by ideas of demonic possession, frankly: the psychology was better, even if the science (and therapy) sucked.

Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at June 27, 2017 11:02 PM (CPk0

Most of the bullshit, these days, in trying to to label all personality problems and mental issues "diseases" (which is mostly done just to release a vast array of criminals from any criminal liability) is a seriously twisted pursuit. People who are evil and fucked up are not merely "suffering" from some mental "disease". THey are fucked up people who, ordinarily, would have been taken out of the evolutionary competition.

The courts have made a mockery of the concept of human consciousness and free will. Basically, the courts don't even believe that either of those two things exist, and it has been the clear goal of all associated with the courts (on the left) to eventually declare that no one is responsible for anything ... because there is no such thing as free will. This is going badly now and will end very, very badly - as well it should.

Addicts and all the other sorts of fucked up head cases and evil shits have to be held responsible for ALL their actions. This doesn't mean that one has to make any moral judgments about them but they need to be held legally responsible for everything they do, whether they felt "compelled" to do it, whether they were blacked-out in one fo their usual fucked up states while they did it, whether they had any "knowledge" that what they were doing was bad or wrong. None of those particulars really matter when it comes down to one person's actions causing consequences for others. But the lefties currently trying to make a disaster of the law are trying to assign moral judgments, surreptitiously, in place of legal judgments and then trying to have them all rendered moot because they don't believe in free will, to start with.

It's intensely infuriating to watch all this stuff go on ... and the idea that the poor, widdle addicts are victims of their own minds the same way that others become victims of their later actions is an insidious concept that needs to killed sometime soon.

From my observations, addiction and mental illness are often intermingled. My late wife was not only addictive, but also suffered from mental illness for the last 30 years of her life. She would sometimes end up in mental wards for a few weeks or as much as a couple of months, and one of the common denominators among the patients was that the were virtually ALL addicted to cigarettes. Hospitals with no smoking rules had to provide a smoking place, at least up until a dozen or so years ago. It's part of the package that the mentally ill have substance addictions. It is explained as attempted self-medication, but I don't know. Anyway, it is like a syndrome.

Elvis struck me as someone who was pretty shy when ya get right down to it. He hadn't performed in a while publicly when that was taped, and he really looked a little bewildered at times. Just for a second.. but you could tell. His life must have been nuts.

267 Common Tater, English proficiency among the Dutch is extremely high. As in, just about everyone understands English, and most speak - very well, better than many Americans.

So actually I would fully expect a Dutch tourist in Spain to be fluent in English. Problem appears to be with the guide's English, and with the Dutch victim/jumper's state of mind and focus, probably.

Posted by: Ladylibertarian at June 27, 2017 11:39 PM (TdMsT)

I heard someone once explain OCD as "You have to do these things in order for things to be all right." You know it on a visceral level that is not really coming from the reason side of the spectrum.

This does not combine well with any habit that affects mood or your chemical balance in general. You not only have the chemical dependence, but also the OCD telling you that "This is the way things have to be or you are not right."

I learned very quickly not to start drinking even lightly on a regular basis after getting myself hooked on nicotine. If I made it a habit, it started tasting too good. So when I drink it is only occasionally (for me, it does not matter how much I drink, but rather how regularly.)

I can handle constantly wondering if I locked the front door (even after checking it after locking it while standing there.) I can even handle nicotine (thank God for vaping.) However, alcohol is about the hardest drug I ever wanted to get involved with.

281 Gorsuch may well be as hoped for/advertized, but the fact that this is so important, and the reaction of many authoritarians ("liberals"), confirms the war is lost, for now.

That is, the war to regain/retain a constitutional system based on law, where the constitution and actual law are the guide. Instead, as now, those things aren't so important - it's just about personnel.

So yeah, I'm stoked with the possibility that some actual judges who understand their role and have some integrity and intelligence might make up a majority of SCOTUS within 3 years (and will be placed in the many open spots lower down). Might even concretely improve life during my lifetime.

But, with rule of law out the window (and it is, wherever one side deems it convenient), we're at the mercy of elections, and the (sub-pathetic) political class, esp. the GOP variety.

Another one of those coaches taught a "science" class, hell, 9th grade something I think. That was when I began to realize things about teachers. They weren't necessarily so smart.

He did some demonstration of H2 and O2, making a little "pop" -- he was just reading from a book, basically.

Then he commented that was the principle on which the "hydrogen bomb" was based. That's when I realized, "Gosh, that man's supposed to be a teacher, and he's dumb as a box of rocks!" Gee, Wally.

I came to the realization that there is a good number of public school teachers that never should have been allowed to teach when I first got to high school. My Spanish teacher was the biggest fucking flake ever. She would have meltdowns in the classroom when she wasn't having the whole class run errands for student government (she was the advisor) the whole class period. We learned absolutely nothing for an entire year. Then when we took Spanish II the next year, the teacher retired at the end of the first day of school. She got her "years" in, so she retired immediately by using all of her unused vacation. It took the school district 6 weeks to find a replacement.

And what a replacement. 23 years old, about 5' tall, and had a body that was quite bangable. We all thought long and hard about making that move, but her husband was a cop in town and we didn't want to risk that shit. So no one did anything. Or so we thought.

25th class reunion, we found out that a guy in our class, the most unlikely to hit it, hit it. She served as a chaperone for some of the girls in the class for the post graduation beach week. A couple of the girls walked into the condo they rented one night and the guy was just plowing her. Turns out he had been banging her the whole year, and he didn't have anything to worry about because she and her husband had "an arrangement".

Lucky mother fucker.

I have a fairly robust resume' subset, encompassing public speaking up to about the 8,000 audience level.

Corporate stuff, with some topics bordering onto the management guru acreage. All, with very high marks, reviews, and yes, fees.

Point is, the "groupie" effect is true, even in the suit n' tie, Fortune 1000 world of corporate attendees.

I avoided entanglements therefrom, as I was still an honorably wed man back then in the mid '90s.

But I wish I'd have kept a few of those phone numbers.

Illegal voters. Most are legal residents - green card holders. They should immediately have their green cards revoked and be shipped out, post haste. But we don't so that sort of reasonable stuff.

Shit, Roger Calero was a green card holder who actually got himself on the Presidential ballots in a handful of states in 2004 and 2008 .. and not only didn't he get deported but some treasonous POS gave the guy citizenship (which should still be revoked and he and his family shipped the fuck out).

327 And the ball-spiking by so many people about the ludicrous SCOTUS action on the EO sort of confirms the war is lost, as even the "good guys" are fine with a court wildly, insanely outside its bounds, usurping executive and legislative power.

An EO that was obviously, unquestionably fully within the lawful authority of the executive - a pause meant to last 90 days for a review to be made of extraordinary security challenges in vetting applicants from select failed states with large jihadist sectors - is delayed for 120 days.

Based on campaign statements. And absurd, slanderous ravings of a few district judges. Giving people and entities with no possible standing, standing.

Then, in its majesty, SCOTUS assumes both legislative and executive power, and tweaks the EO to its own liking - all without any basis, apart from solicitude towards all the parties without standing. And agrees to review the whole lawless mess in 4 months' time.

Judicial coup status:

[X] Consolidated, expanded, and lookin' sharp

But it's not academic to point out that the importance of these appointments only underlines how rule of law is kaputgemacht, gone, finito, and we are at the mercy of the electorate (barf) and a political class of such minute stature that that Brezhnev would have been embarrassed to have them as his lackeys in the Supreme Soviet of his day.

Thanks, but as I said before, this is not really a "problem===> solution" situation.

That gets into the "check pockets for both sets of keys, e-cig, wallet. Check the wallet for debit card. Check again because it might have fallen out when you last checked it. (Literally, I just checked my wallet- I had a checkbook stolen in '93 which started that whole deal.) Did I leave the stove on? I know I checked the light on the stove before I left. Was it on? I think it was off. I am pretty sure I turned it off after I finished cooking last night. Or did I just turn it down to low? Low could start a fire. I think..."

It comes and goes for me. It is not like that all the time, just every now and then. Worse when I am under stress. For some people it is one whole hell of a lot worse.

346 I would call addiction a disorder rather than a disease.
Diseases may be fully cured but addiction is a permanent condition you have to cope with.
Diseases may also kill or disable you, regardless of what you do. Addiction won't do that--- if you lay off the stuff. So you do have control, even though the disorder makes it hard to exercise.

If only I had the time and the practice budget.

Here's the thing. There are more shooting disciplines than there are the time and sufficient practice rounds to master them all.

By time I got to where I could dominate the PPC course of fire, it was obsolete.

I can shoot the hell out of an Appleseed course of fire. But would not even rate entry to a Camp Perry rifle match.

Now then, I am too old, too heavy, too injured and too slow to "master" IDPA, Bianchi or "ISPIC" (sic?) courses of fire.

But I can still, with the S&W Highway Patrolman, put six into the 10 ring, at 7 yards, from the low-ready, in about 1.2~1.3 seconds.

Or shoot 100 yd. cloverleafs, with an Accuracy International in.308, five shot groups, with a good Vortex PST 4x16x40 MOA scope.

I can SHOOT.

But others, can *shoot*, so very, very much BETTER than me.

I can defend my "rifleman's quarter mile" from wherever I choose to post-up.

But the State of the Art, has far exceeded my training and skillset.

I'm not angry about that.

But I do take it into account, and duck below the sandbags, accordingly.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 28, 2017 12:53 AM (8O3HH)

364 Often people fail to make the distinction between physical addiction and psychological addiction. While physical addiction has worse symptoms, psychological addiction is much, much harder to break.

My wife had an experience which highlighted the difference between physical and psychological addiction. Some years back, she had major back surgery (rebuilt her spine and inserted a rod) After the surgery, she was given percodan (iirc) 3 or 4 times a day for at least 30 days. (her spine had just been taken apart and put back together like some erector set, it was justified)

When it came time to wean her off the percodan, it had been long enough that she had to go through the whole physical withdrawal thing - bad sweats, feeling strange things, all the classic symptoms - but it wasn't really that big a deal, since there had never been any psychological addiction; it was more like having a really strange case of the flu for 3 days. And since she hadn't been addicted before the surgery, once she got through the withdrawal symptoms there was never any urge to go back and start eating those pills again.

Psychological addictions often lead to physical addictions, but physical addictions that come about due to medical circumstances rarely lead to psychological addictions; WITH THE GREAT EXCEPTION of people who suffer long term chronic pain from cumulative injuries, ex-sports players being the best example.

The worst part is learning that Trump STILL hasn't booted out the communists that Obama appointed to run this nation. From the original link:

I don't know. Maybe you'd have set a world record in cross country by training hard to run away from 'Coach'.

As for drivers' ed, we had these little Opel Kadetts on which we learned to drive. The best thing was they were stick, forcing all the kids in school to learn to drive a stick. I still enjoy driving a stick. I remember reading a while back, when Jersey City was having a car-jacking crime wave, having a stick was auto theft prevention as the little thieves couldn't drive a stick.

They served tacos until the rising water lapped at their front door. God wept when they closed down the grill for the last time, and the waves claimed the ultimate tacos forever.

That said, most of my family like AARP. They enjoy the discounts and the like.

But I will never join them. Ever. They are another lefty organization claiming to 'look out for the little people'. Yet when the little people pushed back against their bullshit (look up AARP 'having public meetings with their customers' videos on YouBoob), they lied like a prayer rug.

450 >>> Well, I just opened my email at work and lo and behold, my boss has resigned.... this week is gonna suck.

451 Palin is trolling the NYT. She is asking for $75,000. They should settle to save money. My bet is they don't settle and that they lose.

455 MS13 is a scourge and needs to be eradicated. Obama, and the entire executive branch of ICE and DHS should be in jail over that shit.

456 Did anyone else read the comments at the "Karma" link? There was one leftie whining about people who called the phone scammers "scum" because colonialism and racism justifies stealing grandma's income. Really.

457 Crowder is not always on top of everything, but I'm a sucker for muhammad paintings.
