Overnight Open Thread (24 Jun 2017)

It looks the firm behind the dubious intelligence dossier on DJT is really an opposition-research group for Democrats and are political activists. You don't say. No wonder they are stonewalling the congressional investigators.

Testosterone

Well, this could explain some of the things we suffer through today like pajama boy. Men's testosterone levels declined in the last 20 years.

Healthcare

Yo, California. You should probably read this before y'all go hell bent on single-payer government run healthcare. Nearly 100 patients died waiting for care from Los Angeles VA.

Spaceballs Turns 30

Idiot

Yeah, if you're using Paul Krugman for advice, you're setting yourself up for failure. Paul Krugman on the minimum wage.

Paul Krugman has said that he doesn't read conservative blogs, so obviously he may not be familiar with the literature on how the minimum wage costs jobs. But that's no excuse for not even reading the first page of the study he links to in support of his claim.

What They Really Think

Oh I think there are many, many more progs who think this way and these two stories are just the tip of the iceberg. Professor says North Korea detainee got what he 'deserved'.

And this one from earlier this week. Democrat party technology chairman: I'm glad Scalise got shot, I wish he was f*cking dead".

Who knew, Republican's are murdering their own families according to Montel Williams on CNN.

Ultraboss

I guess they're calling this shredwave. Reminds me a bit of Joe Satriani.

Heh

'Sorry about that, eh' - Canadian sniper apologizes after record breaking kill shot.

According to experts, Canadian standard operating procedure is to ask a target's permission before ending his life, so as to maintain a spirit of good sportsmanship.

"We're all aboot friendship and fair play up here in Canada, even if we're just killing a bunch of hosers like ISIS," said Canadian military spokesman Mick Robinson. "All the famous Canadians that everyone's heard of like Frank Boucher and Jack Bionda would tell you the same, buddy."

You Don't Say

This wasn't getting a whole lot of national coverage for a bit but its starting to hit the MSM. Jane Sanders lawyers up.

123 Submitted a dip recipe in honor of a WWII vet and Greatest Generation member (passed last year), a Navy nurse. Very simple, probably very popular in the 50s/60s.

This lady's command presence was immediately apparent when you met her. A very nice gal from Waukegan IL, but it was easy to imagine that in her time running wings of hospitals and sections of hospital ships, one would have been desperate to avoid being labeled a "jackass" by her.

Want to preserve the anonymity all around, but her last name was not common, and was the same (save for one letter) as one of the most senior and famous Navy admirals in the war. So at each new assignment, some young ensign would be sent to - discreetly as they could - confirm whether she was related to Mr. Very Big Shot.

After a while of course she expected this, and would stun the young officer clumsily attempting to make small talk and find out about her possible relations by blurting out almost immediately - "No, no relation to THAT ******".

A classic. Fair seas on the other side, Commander.

brought home 2 15 lowers and a 10, a Para Ord Warthog, and a Finnish M-39.

the 1916 small ring Mauser stayed to be refinished, and will need a stock, and dropped off the PTR-91 receiver to be finished like the CETME parts kit it will eventually be built out with..

and then we're waiting on a correct stock for the 1961 Weatherby FN receiver rifle i found and am paying off, started on Father's Day. (Bubba the Gun Smite put a thumb hole on it, back in the day. he even dyed the end to look like the ebony wood on the stock he undoubtedly threw away when he committed said abortion.)

166 I can't really cook to save my life. Leave me on a desert island with nothing but a grill a freezer full of the finest meats you can imaine and I might turn it all to charcoal before starving to death.

I can, however, bake.

Or rather I can follow a simple recipe.

If cooking is an art, baking is a science. I like science. I love science. I'd love to put my love into...oh, uh...nevermind.

Anyway, so last year I had this harebrained idea to try to bake a cake. Never baked a cake. Not so much as from a box.

Found a recipe for a blueberry lemon cake. Except for the fact I overmixed it and made it dense, it came pretty damn good. Followed that with a red velvet cake and that came out so wonderfully soft and moist. It goes from there.

Anyway, so I can follow instructions. I get most everything from a website called Sally's Baking Addiction and periodically Pioneer Woman (who is, I understand, a minor celebrity) and also Chowhound.

I don't know what does what 90% of the time, but I stick to the instructions. I'm learning. Slowly, I'm learning. I made a S'more chocolate chip cookie cake tonight that's so freakin' gooey it's more sinful then nailing two 15 year old hookers you found on Craigslist.

Anyway, I'd recommend checking out My Bitch Sally (as I call her). Yummy shit.

++++

They did a bit of borrowing from the movie "Lord of War" with Nick Cage. In that movie, Cage is a big time gun runner. When he gets busted, he tells the cop that he will be let go. And, the cop's boss does order him released.

In Fargo's finale, Varga runs the same line, but we never find out if he was right or just bs'ing. I was happy with the ending, but I can see how some would be irritated with it being left open like that.

250 I work with a guy who swears it's soy that is robbing men of testosterone. I wouldn't know, but I'm going to say that more men have desk jobs rather than physical jobs and the smoking thing can be explained by the fact that --as anyone who ever smoked will tell you----smoking keeps the weight down. Maybe that's why smokers have more testosterone than non-smokers--they aren't as fat.

On a related note, wasn't there something that came out a couple of years ago that said than men's "grip strength" isn't what it used to be and that 50 year-old guys had more strength than 20 year-olds?

268 I think Ebert said about Mel Brooks if you are going to successfully spoof or satire a movie you have to love it in the first place. Ebert was talking about Robin Hood Men in Tights, but it applies equally to Soaceballs: Brooks didn't really love or "get" Star Wars the way he loved those old westerns when he made Blazing Saddles.

I can't say I blame him-- not loving Star Wars.

There was myth, and it's a myth that excessive masturbation will decrease testosterone. It doesn't. What it does do, though, is decrease sensitivity. It down regulates testosterone receptors somewhat, but the main thing is on dopamine in the brain. You build up tolerance to the stimulation input.

They call it "porn induced erectile dysfunction", and that's the biggest limp dick cause in young men.

The cure is simple. Stop watching porn and stop jacking for a while.

369 Here is my recipe. Take a lamb, slit its throart, hang it up to bleed it out (save the blood), cut it open to remove the interanal orgins setting aside the heart, kidneys, liver; for my taste the tripe goes to the hog including the brain. Skin the lamb and cure it and sell the cured sheep skin, Buchter the carcase. Set aside a leg ( bone included). Stuff leg with garlic cloves and green oilives. Rub leg with olive oil, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Let it sit overnight in the frig. Then cook at low heat (275F) until medium rare. Slice and dice accordingly. Serve. Save the bone to roast and enjoy the marrow.

Thats it, java or else, bluebell. I don't play by anyone's rules. No offense intended, its just how I am made. So include it, or chastize me. Frankly I don't give a damn. ;-)

For some reason, I still peruse HotAir often enough that it's in my bookmarks. Jazz Shaw usually puts together decent stuff, and Taylor Millard is funny in that it seems like he's applying for the job of token "conservative" at the NYT.

I also check Twitchy daily. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I find that really embarrassing. I suppose the "Random Rightie PWNS Random Lefty" theme seems catty, childlike and pointless.

Legal Insurrection and AOSHQ are my two non-Christian must-read blogs of the day. The two are really complementary.

Legal Insurrection made a name for itself during the Zimmerman murder trial for St. Trayvon. The blog founder is a conservative law professor at Cornell.

498 475 473 NASASpaceflight.com if you like spaceflight. Best space site on the entire internet.

Politics is strictly verboten, and will get your comments deleted. That makes sense, since the site has commenters from all over the world. A political flame war could trigger an actual shooting war.

Despite the name, the site is not affiliated in any way with NASA. It was started in 2005 by a Brit, Chris Bergin, whose day job was a sports journalist but who was also a space geek. (He can go on and on about metric football.)

The site has metastasized beyond belief. The archives of topics and comments are vast, and that's just the public side. The subscriber-only L2 section is a whole 'nother level. I am not kidding when I say it is THE premier spaceflight site on the entire internet.

The site has developed such a reputation that it's not only for space fanbois. People who actually work in the space industry contribute there, including current and former NASA employees. And it attracts commenters from all over the world, some of whom are actually involved in their own countries' space programs.

499 I used to read Am. Thinker, but got bored after a while. I also used to be into Weasel Zippers and The Other McCain, but drifted away similarly.

FreeRepublic has a goofy setup that I never really cared for. I've also literally never visited Drudge.

Years ago, when I was a right-wing college kid who fancied Ron Paul (not anymore, BTW), I used to read Angry White Dude. It was funny, and I enjoyed commenting there and that's how I eventually discovered the rest of the conservative blogosphere. Don't know what happened to that site though- haven't visited in close to a decade.

Mostly I agree on CTH and AOS about candle burning, prayer and honesty. I find CTH sometimes over the top on Trump but not horribly. Also I have found quite a bit of detail on it. Glad to have both as well.Lucianne. Used to read it years ago. Then Jonah because I like his fancy pants writing sometimes. But now I just cannot go where he goes. I think I might hold that against Lucianne so probably should go back and check. Also I find Legal Insurrection really useful when it comes to if not the legality then facts and what is and is not doable. And Mark Steyn -- smart, but I love the music, stage and movies knowledge as well. etc. Just like that. But can't read 'em all. AOS and Insty .

The shells are colorful, and some of the material we recovered is very showy. This stuff is mined as a gem in Alberta, and sold for mucho $$. Marketed as "ammolite". And the colors, like opal, or mother of pearl, are the result of light refraction in the layers of the shell, and not from any pigments of dyes. Grind the shell to powder, and it's white.

These were free-swimming marine creatures, like a squid, but with an external shell. They had numerous tentacles, and two big eyes, and were efficient predators. In turn, they were preyed upon by marine dinosaurs, like mososaurs.

On a sonewhat related topic, try finding pasta products not enriched in iron these days, short of making them yourself. Mrs. Krebs has hereditary hemochromatosis. She began getting more and more easily tired and found herself sleeping through most of the day. These symptoms began as she underwent menopause.

After a visit to her doctor, blood testing and follow up tests, her hemochromatosis was discovered and she began weekly bloodletting to bring down her blood iron levels. She now donates blood on a quarterly basis in order to keep her body's iron levels within healthy limits. Two of her four siblings, a brother and a sister, have been diagnosed with hereditary hemochromatosis as well.

Hemochromatosis kills as the accumulated iron can damage organs. Death ftom the condition often is attributed to other causes, so it is insidious.

Currency death spiral.

They keep printing dollars in order to do the stuff they want to do, so there are more dollars in circulation the next year, hence more for the government to steal back in taxes.

But no additional value results, so the dollars don't go as far, so they have to print even more the next year. Oh and everyone else's dollars don't go as far either, so the deficit spending acts as a tax on both your income and savings, just one they don't have to exert themselves to collect.

The only actual solution is to decrease government to something sustainable, but as the GOPe is showing in it's attempts to fix obamacare, there's no interest in DC for actual solutions.

I used to laugh at the sight of my father-in-laws little tackle box of drugs - all carefully labeled. Before breakfast, after breakfast, before lunch, after lunch, before nap, after nap, before dinner, after dinner, before sleep.

Eventually he got Parkinson's -- probably as a result of the anti-depressants he took.

The good news is that a lot of these drugs help you live longer!

The bad news is that by living longer the side-effects pretty much ensure you will get Parkinson's, dementia, Alzheimers, or some form of cancer!

755 Ghostery only shows "1" on AOSHQ. Welcome change from other sites that show "137" before the page loads up. So much shit associated with sites.

756 If you have a copy of "The Rainbow Fish" laying around you could probably finish it before the book thread goes up.

________

Never mind. Book thread is up.

757 Speaking of books, just out of idle curiosity I did a search on a book that my Dad wrote and got published back in the early 70's. He was a decent writer and mostly wrote Westerns, but that genre was so flooded with really good writers that it was hard to break into. Anyway, he only had the one book published.
The result of the search astounded me. I found one used copy in the US, and two used copies on Amazon.uk. The two copies in the UK are going for about $26.00 each, and the US one is going for about $5.00. I'm going to get a copy because I lost mine in a move. Pretty cool, right?

760 I know everything looks better with Nostalgia Glasses, but 'Spaceballs' was always third-tier Mel Brooks. Try watching it again and see.

Brooks' zenith was Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein. From there, its pretty much a steady, slow decline from great through good to meh to oy.

762 Lots of car parts and cars dropping out of this race, good news for Magnussen if he can keep his nose clean

763 Stopping race because of all the minor collisions leaving debris on the track until they can clean the track.

764 Another oppressively hot day again.
I blame the GOP.

Spaceballs is amusing but uneven. Blazing Saddles is a non-stop assault on your funnybone and Peter Boyle is outstanding in Young Frankenstein.
