Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (23 Jun 2017)Considering how ludicrous the FBI's conclusions are as it relates to an attack on the third ranking member of the House of Representatives, you might reconsider whether to trust the FBI's conclusions in other areas, as well. And this is how our faith in institutions is degraded: steadily, gradually, with incident after incident where men in suits stand in front of microphones and make claims we know are not the whole truth. If CIA contractors are willing to hack vending machines, what else do you think they're willing to do with capabilities they have access to in their official capacity? No one has really been punished at the IRS for their political shenanigans and the DOJ obviously interfered with the Hillary private server investigation. Until big name folks are held accountable for their violations, public faith in these institutions will continue to crater. SpaceX seems to be able to do autopilot right.
This afternoon they successfully relaunched a used first stage to send a satellite for Bulgaria to geosynchronous transfer orbit. The primary mission was flawless. Then they once again landed the stage on the droneship. Because this mission required high performance from the first stage, it came in fast and hot. Literally hot, because of the re-entry heating. In fact, they said beforehand not to be too surprised if the vehicle didn't survive. There was a dramatic moment when the video link was lost just before landing. When it was restored, Falcon 9 was standing upright but apparently slightly tilted. This is why I love SpaceX. Just when their landings were beginning to look routine, they go and push the envelope like this. I can't wait to see the landing video of this one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8mLi-rRTh8 Here's another view of the launch. It just blows my mind that someone can take out a US Navy destroyer out at sea with a 700 foot long ship. It's completely inexcusable.
Posted by: f'd at June 23, 2017 10:04 PM (BO/km) Indeed. There should have been a watch kept by both ships. I will cut the container ship's crew some slack; they may be under-manned, and the crew all tired from loading operations. But damn, a destroyer, a fighting ship on patrol? Even in peacetime, a fighting vessel needs to keep a lookout for hostiles, or even for other vessels in distress, to render aid. Maybe not part of their mission, but always good for PR. And they have a large crew, no excuse for not having both visual and radar watches kept. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 23, 2017 10:12 PM (XUcIQ) 99
well who takes a date to a gas station?
Posted by: yankeefifth at June 23, 2017 10:01 PM (0wem/) --- Ha. I forgot that the first woman I truly loved used to always want to stop by a gas station where she had found Hawaiian Punch stored in large paddle-stirred clear rectangular dispensers. She had loved the stuff and hadn't seen it for years, and that gas station was involved in almost all of our dates. Grown woman, too. Beautiful and fairly wealthy. Could buy anything almost anything she wanted without needing to balance the checkbook first, and she wanted to go get Hawaiian Punch from this ratty little mom-and-pop gas station. It was charming as hell. Posted by: Hate Has No Homo at June 23, 2017 10:13 PM (c2K1w) 100

It also involved two separate recipes, (hot and mild), and during the madness that takes at least five hours to complete? It is too complicated for the Moron Cookbook. The FBI has always been politicized. J Edgar was a nasty blackmailer. That's just how it is. Everything in the Government is heavily politicized. The Democrats are in fact Marxists, while the Republicans are at best Socialists. Trump is the closest thing to a Capitalist in a long time.
Essentially, most of what our country is supposed to be based upon are lies. That's why babies are butchered for body parts. No one who is actually aware of such things will ever trust the Government. Comey is no doubt a vile individual, but, really, he's swimming in a sewer. "All PIV sex is rape."
I recall a story a from few months back that suggested that if you refuse to have sex with someone because of their gender, then you're a h8r. Well, I guess we can infer from that that there can be no rational basis to ever refuse sex. I mean, if not something big like gender, then what? Therefore, rape is impossible, because you're not allowed to say "No" , unless you're a h8r. Try that one on the next feminist who says all men are rapists. My day was less than stellar.
Atter waiting two weeks for my boss to deal with the narcissist photog that is backstabbing me, I found out today what action he took. For the record: This is the guy that a demands a fee when he hasn't done anything and a job is cancelled. This is a guy that demands a fee when his work isn't used, because it's bad. This is the guy that the boss said we'd never use again, abou two months ago, when he started making demands. So... the boss "gave him a stern talking to." So, so unhappy about the situation. This guy is manipulaing our boss and in turn, his boss. And they are totally enabling him. I'm doing all I can to make sure I don't have to deal with the photographer; maybe next time he starts threatning suicide, he can call the boss. And... I am very agressively pursuing new work. The elites will never hold each other accountable; the government will never hold itself accountable. If the populace is unwilling or unable to do the job, it will never be done. I can name one Coldplay song, one Rascal Flatts song and maybe one Katy Perry song.
If someone isn't dead in the band, I probably don't know them. Posted by: shibumi at June 23, 2017 11:53 PM (aT+Bx) Rascal Flatts is nothing but a "boy band" with a very slight twang. Talented as all hell, but I still can't stand 'em. They're "something" but I'm not sure what One thing I *am* sure of though, is that they're not Country Music. Merle Haggard is Country Music. So is Randy Travis, Willie & Waylon, and so very many more. Rascal Flatts can go compete in the Pop Top 40 chart, for all I care. And don't get me started on all the f'kn "bro country" baseball cap acts, with actual f'kn RAP shit woven into their "song". Hank Snow would be spinning in his grave. @ Anna-Puma. Thanks, and have been long time familiar with that legendary feat.
A B-52 fuselage is a long, slab-sided, nearly self-stabilizing form (in the yaw axis) in it's own right. And the lack of a rudder can be easily made up for by thrust-steering the outboard engine pods. Still, would've been a handful on short final. Now then, a supposition for you. Let's say we take a classic A-1d Skyraider. New production though. And hang one of these on the nose. http://tinyurl.com/ycadbyc4 The weight is close enough to the original recip engine so that some fore/aft positioning could solve cg problems. But, double the horsepower, and I can only imagine the thrust differential from that six bladed prop? I'm thinking poor-man's A-10 here for the SAR role, but with a couple wingfulls of 20mm cannons, vs. a Vulcan installation. With the additional power, even more fuel and ordnance could be carried. And armor. Then with modern digital panels and data-linking, I think the thing would be one hell of a formidable package. (and a lot fewer oil leaks on the tarmac!) Kick the idea around, and let me know what'cha think? Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 24, 2017 12:19 AM (v5iqM) 500

As "his" voice changed I am positive "she" was using female hormones. It was quite difficult to tell she had ever been male.
Quite surprising really. Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale For the record, testosterone effectively deepens a female transsexual's voice. Estrogen does NOT raise the pitch of a male transsexual's voice. If the tranny's voice changed, it was because he was practicing raising the pitch of his voice and using female inflections. Practically every man can train their voice to sound female. Jenner is a lazy idiot who has never bothered to do this. But to reiterate, taking estrogen will no more shrink your vocal cords than it will shrink the width of your shoulders, or make your hands and feet smaller. It doesn't work that way. The only thing it does is prevent hair loss, and causes impotence and infertility. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at June 24, 2017 12:22 AM (xAvrH) 516

I have a big gap in my music knowledge from the time I got out of college until my kids were in high school and I picked up on what they were listening to. I have no clue about Guns n Roses, Nirvana, R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins, Blink(?), and oh so many more. There are entire sub genres that I cannot identify. Did I miss anything?

502 There's buzz! Question for you that I have wanted to ask my vet but didn't want to accidentally sound pervy and I'm not googling it bc God knows what might come up. Do girl dogs want to mate if they have been spayed or do they totally lose all drive?
Posted by: L, Elle at June 24, 2017 12:19 AM (Rsi2C) I don't know. My parents only had one dog that they spayed, and that was after several litters and it was to stop her having another. So I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that once she's not in heat there's going to be no incentive for the male to hump beyond their normal desire to hump stuff. That is about 2,000HP more than the R-3350 produced. CG issue maybe moot if you don't mind a long nose forcing you to S-turn on the ground to see ahead if you keep the tail dragger configuration.
Also have you thought how the turbo-prop will direct the exhaust? How will it be handled to reduce the SA-14 MANPAD threat? That is an Achilles heel that I don't think those pushing the AT-6A and the Embraer Super Tucano upgrade have found a solution which means even in a very low threat environment it just takes one Gomer with -94 or an SA-14 to bring down either plane. Fuel, ammo, armor, and munitions. Fuel - what is the SFC of that engine versus the R-3350? Do you want to keep the same range? Or maybe increase it by 10%? Each additional gallon of jet fuel is a lot more pounds which factors into your max gross weight. Ammo - keep the Colt 20mm cannons? Keep two or all four? And how many rounds per gun? That gross weight just jumped again. Armor - replicate the armored bathtub of the A-10? Armor up the engine and flight controls also? How will this affect accessibility for the wrench turners? And there goes that gross weight again. Munitions - stressing the outer pylons from 300lbs to 600lbs is about all that is needed. Plus wire all pylons to support smart munitions like the Small Diameter Bomb. JSOW? Maybe. Plus wire the two most outboard pylons to accept AIM-9x missiles. Which might keep the weight down except for a few knock-on issues. Fuel in the wings plus guns and more robust bomb pylons means the wing structure will have to be beefed up so the wing won't fail. Still could save a decent amount of weight and improve structural strength by removing the wing fold mechanisms. The other knock-on problem is how stressed is the landing gear now with all this extra weight? So the landing gear will have to be made stronger which means heavier. Might as well build a new paper airplane instead of reheating the old Spad which could carry, even in the AD-1 form, three aerial torpedoes at once. Also remember the Martin AM-1 Mauler was equipped with the R-4360 but only 150 or so were built, having been beaten by the AD-1. So more horsepower does not always mean a better warplane. Kinda wore them like a badge of honor like a proud slut. It was actually a funny moment. Plenty of real estate to convert to a tricycle gear configuration Also have you thought how the turbo-prop will direct the exhaust? How will it be handled to reduce the SA-14 MANPAD threat? That is an Achilles heel that I don't think those pushing the AT-6A and the Embraer Super Tucano upgrade have found a solution which means even in a very low threat environment it just takes one Gomer with -94 or an SA-14 to bring down either plane. Above wing root exhaust, about 3/4 way to the aft of chord, bifurcated to both sides. Additional thrust benefit, with a wee bit of IR shielding by the wing itself. Fuel, ammo, armor, and munitions. Fuel - what is the SFC of that engine versus the R-3350? Do you want to keep the same range? Or maybe increase it by 10%? Each additional gallon of jet fuel is a lot more pounds which factors into your max gross weight. I suspect that the efficiency of the turboprop will distinctly exceed that of the recip original. A great many Skyraiders featured a one passenger compartment aft and below the cockpit, in the main fuselage. Great place for a big bag o' fuel, that, and relatively near the CG to boot. Ammo - keep the Colt 20mm cannons? Keep two or all four? And how many rounds per gun? That gross weight just jumped again. All four. And as many rounds as the gross weight math allows. Armor - replicate the armored bathtub of the A-10? Armor up the engine and flight controls also? How will this affect accessibility for the wrench turners? And there goes that gross weight again. Not the armor tub of the A-10, but damn good plating, as can be worked into the design. DO though, incorporate the A-10 triple redundant flight controls, including reversion. Concur, on all. Make 'er a fixed wing masterpiece. If the Navy or Marines want 'em, keep the fold, find the weight elsewhere. We've got horsepower to burn, here. Might as well build a new paper airplane instead of reheating the old Spad which could carry, even in the AD-1 form, three aerial torpedoes at once. Then start the clean paper with the Spad as the tracing form. It. WORKED. Also remember the Martin AM-1 Mauler was equipped with the R-4360 but only 150 or so were built, having been beaten by the AD-1. So more horsepower does not always mean a better warplane. The Mauler never achieved the record that the Spad amassed. I can think of no better starting point, than where it left off. Advil PM is ibuprofen and diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
ibuprofen, like all NASIDs, cycles through your liver, and is contraindicated with alcohol for that reason, as well as for wear and tear on your gut. if you just take plain generic Benadryl, available in the allergy aisle of your local drug store, you should get the same general effect, w/o all the additional side issues your current regimen courts. this is not medical advice, btw. As for decongestants, the best bar none is Azelastine.
It's technically not a decongestant, but instead a "second-generation antihistamine," but I gotta tell ya, it really consistently works to keep post-nasal drip at bay, and best of all, it has zero side-effectds -- not a stimulant like pseudoephedrine or most other over-the-counter stuff. The bad news is that it is still by prescription only in the US (though not elsewhere in the world), so it's both hard to get and expensive. But if you're gonna see a doctor anyway, ask for a prescription of Azelastine -- you won't regret it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azelastine Posted by: zombie at June 24, 2017 01:54 AM (DQ4Fv) 741

Posted by: redc1c4 A minor word of warning: Azelastine, like most antihistamines, comes as a nasal spray -- you spritz it up your nostrils. But of course whenever you do that, sometimes it leaks out the back of your sinuses into your throat - i.e. the medicine itself, for the first minute or so, becomes part of the post-nasal drop problem. Which could momentarily make your feel worse -- but this same issue happens with any nose spray. After that initial minute, however, it really does start to dry up your sinuses in a long-term way, with absolutely no side effects, which is what I like about it. being an old Soldier, i started taking my pillow and blanket down with me (spares, i never used my made up bunk, because lazy) and cop some Zs, or at least doze, behind the formation while they tried to figure out WTF was going on. pretty soon, there were a few of us back there, until the day a drill came by and had a shit fit. "What were you thinking???" "that i'm Infantry and i can fall asleep anywhere?" Posted by: redc1c4 at June 24, 2017 02:31 AM (6Da5j) 772

769 F*ck - I forgot - zombie, if you are still here, I recall a few years back you had an excellent article about the mechanics of gerrymandering and redistricting.
I have not been able to re-find it. Can you please, please, please repost the link. If you do, I'll put on a red dress and stick my thingy in the exhaust pipe of a car, and then you can post the photo and the horde will see how grotesque I am. Thanks. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear I posted the links on the thread you asked for them, a few days ago! You must have missed them. 640 Why did the Braves have a new stadium built? The "old" one was what, 20 years or something? That doesn't seem that old for a stadium. Was it falling apart already?

Posted by: westminsterdogshow at June 23, 2017 11:28 PM (IV4VS) He can't use real black lights because that might embarrass the cat owners. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at June 23, 2017 11:29 PM (rZ+mb) Some of us cat owners have a black light for that express purpose. Long time listener...first time caller.
Contra the article on the "Army is the fattest military branch." Shoddy journalism. Instead the writer should have pointed to how BMI is an incredibly inaccurate measurement of fitness. Generally speaking, more Soldiers are going to fall in the overweight and obese BMI categories because of the high levels of fitness. 4-5 days a week of running, calisthenics, throw in ruck marching (fast walking pace carrying a heavy load) and some weight lifting, and there you go. Are there overweight Soldiers? Absolutely. A more accurate way to report the story was to obtain statistics from the Army's Human Resource Command ("corporate HR") as to the percentage of Soldiers enrolled in the Weight Control Program. Those actually out of tolerance to the Army Standards are counseled and closely monitored to lose weight and/or sufficient body fat to meet standards. Those that don't are administratively separated. Did 27 years in the Army, retired in 2015 at 48 years old. 6' and consistently 215 lbs. BMI says overweight. Was still capable of 16:30 2 mile run, 72 sit-ups and 65 pushups for semi-annual physical fitness test. Also still capable of carrying a 33 lb. load 9 kilometers at better than a 15 minute mile.
