I imagine this will turn out to be like all other major engineering disasters - a cascade of errors/mistakes/oversights that led to the accident.

I communicated with my sailor late last night - he serves on a DDG similar to the Fitzgerald. He told me the berthing spaces that were flooded in the accident normally hold 100+ sailors and that it was a miracle that dozens were not drowned. Below decks, much of the ship's company asleep, minimal light (if any), chaos and water filling the compartments - never a good combo.

His guy won. No one could figure out exactly why he did that, but it's a fact that trial lawyers are the major funders of the effort to turn Texas blue.

West Michigan is also a bit of a 'magical conservative bubble', but I have seen a number of "Bernie" and "Obama" bumper stickers, and personally know a couple hard core leftists. (One worked for McGOvern's campaign in Chicago, and got tear gassed. Another is an old hippie who did relatively well for himself.)

They are batshit crazy in the sense that they have drunk the Kool-Aid the MFM supplies. Their hatred of Trump is unbelievable.

Even though I live near a Big 812 college town, we make our own non-lLeftist spaces. There is a strong TEA party group that punches above it's numbers. We even rent out a tent at the County Fair and answer all comers. Since our spot is directly opposite the police tent, it is verbal altercations only.

I have a lot of enjoyment debating the brave SJWs that wink at their friends and come in to school us. I give them knowledge they do not have.

Plus, we give away ice pops to people who answer our Constitution questions correctly. Fun!

Austin is "the blueberry in the tomato soup" (along with DFW, Houston, El Paso, (and SA to a lesser extent)). But it is nothing like Berzerkly or San Francisco or Marin. There are places in the Central Texas area you can live that are quite conservative (Williamson County, although Georgetown is beginning to whack out).

354 I'm in South Central PA. I live in a fairly rural area and work in a fairly urban one (an old suburban area that is pretty close to being urban, if that makes any sense). It really depends on where you are as far as how crazy people are.

In the rural areas there are no crazy people, at least that I've seen. You'll meet people who are not conservative, or at least unenthusiastic about Trump, but certainly no crazies.

When it comes to the suburbs, it really depends how what job a person has and how affluent they are (or in most cases pretend to be). The people with private sector jobs are not crazy. The people with government sinecure jobs and/or the people who like to show off their class status by loudly talking about how they love going to artsfests and subscribe to the New Yorker and the New York Times are all bat shit crazy. They'll often rant in large groups about Trump and the country and then act shocked when people don't agree with them (not disagree mind, simply not reiterate every dumbass point they make).

"Cities" in my neck of the woods have fewer than 50,000 people, but still, no one seems to live there aside from the aforementioned limo liberals, lower class people still waiting for their Obamaphones, and hipsters who think the government should pay off their $300,000 in student loans for the useless degree they got after ten years of "study".

So it really depends how rural or urban your neighborhood. The more urban, the more insane, in my experience. The less urban, the more insane and disconnected from any kind of reality.
