Overnight Open Thread (17 Jun 2017)

This has been readily apparent if you've been paying attention. Extremism experts are starting to worry about the left. This statement highlights the problem. It was OK to ignore extremism from the left.

“I think we’re in a time when we can’t ignore the extremism from the Left,” said Oren Segal, the director of the Center on Extremism, an arm of the Anti-Defamation League.

I bet he would say that there is never a time where they could ignore extremism from the right. But this is the problem everywhere. The media ignores problems with the left across all aspects of government but pounces on every single incident involving the right. This kind of behavior just exacerbates the problem. Equal focus on both sides would actually tamp down these issues.

In case there is any doubt about where this is headed, look at what Antifa is doing.

Before the rally began, I witnessed a small group of masked people standing at a distance and monitoring Gibson's group as they arrived. They declined to comment beyond stating that they were there to "document" the event.

A young male dressed in black was later seen taking photographs of license plates belonging to the cars of people with Gibson's group as they were driving away.

Eventually, they'll start showing up at your house.

Strange Times

Canadians could face hate crimes over using the wrong gender pronouns. Sigh.

Poll

Poll shows trust for NASA on climate, but some put Fox News in second. I wouldn't trust anything that pushes AGW climate change.

Rockin' It

Antibiotic Resistance

This sounds promising. Researchers have traced the genes for antibiotic resistance back to their source.

Buried Ships

New maps reveals ships buried below San Francisco.

19 I just finished watching the Agent 9 FanEdit of Prometheus. Other than lacking that dramatic opening scene, which I guess he found unnecessary, I think it is a better cut. There must be a lot of deleted scenes in the DVD release because I swear a bunch of the stuff was new to me. So, he added and removed, making it tauter and interestingly, making Charlize Theron character much less evil..

33 Good evening! I've been wanting to post cookie pictures for a while, and thought tonight was as good as any . . . Thought the Scouts among you might like them. These are cookies I made for a friend's grandson's Eagle Scout award ceremony. She asked for a couple of designs and left the rest up to me. I thought I would make merit badge cookies, and started researching . . . which led me to making cookies of each of the merit badges that are required to earn the Eagle Scout.

I didn't say anything to my friend about the designs. Later, she told me that the Scout Masters liked the designs, looked at them closer and then had the "ah ha" moment when they realized what they were looking at. She said one of the Scout Masters made the boys identify the badge before they could take the cookie.

Anyway, here are the cookies. There are 3 pictures. Scroll left or right to see them all.

As long as you represent what the local government wants, they will do as they please.

Most of these areas where these fags do their violence are leftist sanctuaries, so the government there doesn't care that they have masks on. As a matter of fact, I'll bet that they have coordinated with the local mayors' offices over what they can get away with.

71 They wouldn't have the problem of ignoring extremism on the left if they didn't so often classify violent left groups as being on the right. But then they wouldn't have much "right-wing" extremist violence to denounce and so - so much on the left and that wouldn't do.

I'm surprised they haven't named Antifa as a right-wing hate group yet.

109 Drive- by tonight; our air conditioner went out today. We thought we had flooding in the basement, turns out water is dripping out of the bottom of the Trane unit.

Tor tried to fix it, by the grace of God, we were able to get someone out to look at it and 3 hours later he can't fix it, either.

The dang coils are set up like legs, with a drain pan on each "foot", so to speak. Well, the water is dripping right down where the drain pain ain't.

Why the f*ck would they even design something like this?!

It's been in the 90s, and the humidity is 83%.

133 Long-phase Willowing, but I was just that pissed. From way earlier:

I'm going to be upset about the Motoring Press all day now. May have to post this several times. Detest blasphemy.

Watching
LeMans, and they do a nice breakaway about 1968 and the US victory.
Then they mention that Dan Gurney drove east, and won the Belgian GP, in
his own car. All true, and it was great. And then they say that was the
only Grand Prix victory by an American in an American car.

They
do this all the time, just like the TV guys who begin Indianapolis
history with the first year the 500 was televised. No, guys. "Formula
One, Inc." of the post WWII era is not the whole history of Grand Prix
racing.

Jimmy Murphy won the 1921 French Grand Prix. In a Duesenberg.

______________________
They just re-ran part of the segment, with Dan Gurney on the phone.
They half-ass corrected it, in the after-commentary, to Dan being the only American to win a Grand Prix in a car he built himself.

I see who they're jabbing with that (Cunningham?), but, fair enough, I'll take it.

I was recording LeMans but my DVR didn't record the first couple of hours for some reason. First world problems.

It gets curiouser as when I went to the map page today you can't get a track that goes further back than the later part of the loop.

That said the whole loopy track would make sense if the collision happened right where they ship first started to go off course in the BBC picture and then the rest would be them coming back around to look for survivors. That would then have the BBC timing of the track vs collision off.

Also, the back straight takes you in and out of shadows from trees, then ends in an *extremely* sharp, uphill right hander.

Turn 6 is at the top of a short uphill section, witha bridge that you pass under. You can't really see the turn as you start up the hill, you just have to be prepared for it when pop up out from under the bridge.

Yep, teh Interwebs say that better nutrition and medicine is the main reason for declining puberty. In the US, the average age of puberty way back was 17 years.

It decreased rapidly then leveled off, but is still decreasing. The average age is 12.6 for white girls, 12.1 for black. And somewhere in between for the others. You can look it up if interested.

PoP,

Look up the stats. In 1860, the *average* age of puberty *onset* was 16.6 years. And this was from some German medical records, I think.

In 1920, it had dropped to 14.6, and in 2010, it is 10.5 years.

This is onset. First menstruation occurs later, and that's where the currently taken average of 12.5 years is defined. First menses.

Apparently, in ROman times, it was about 14 or so for girls. But it increased. And this may be poor nutrition and disease and all that crap.

My paternal grandmother was married at 16, and my grandfather was 19. Years later, she threw a fit at one of my cousins getting married at 20. "That's too young!", she screamed.

Let's see, my paternal grandmother was born around the mid 1890s. Roughly, she would've been about 15 in 1910, give or take. I think my oldest aunt, her first born was born in 1914. Or was 1913? Hell, I can't remember.

Anyway, my father was born in 1927. The baby of the family. That aunt had her first child in 1930. My father was an uncle at 3.

Now, my maternal grandmother was a year or two older, but she married much later.

Chernobyl was an engineering test exercise, badly handled.

But really, a USN ship of the line, in crowded waters, during a watch on the wrong end of the clock, with the CO asleep, opting to do such?

I wonder instead if they had an abrupt propulsion casualty and simply couldn't get out of the way of the strangely helmed freighter.

I haven't heard of any recent instances occurring in the Burke community, but the LPDs and the LCSes have had a whole lot of severe breakdowns in which they could not make way.

The way I understand it, that was the age at which a boy becomes "responsible for his own actions". Before that, the parents are responsible. After that, his actions are his own.

For girls, I see it was either 12 or 13. "Bat mitzvah" for girls. It corresponds with the onset of puberty roughly.

358 I sent this out about three hours ago to my Facebook community for the Boy Scout Troop of which I serve as Scoutmaster...

Hi Ho, Everybody. Just a note to bring all y'all up to speed on a late breaking medical development. Early this afternoon I was rock climbing outdoors with our Boy Scout Troop when I began experiencing chest pains beneath my breastbone. After working with a RN adult leader on the aspirin regimen, matters deteriorated (spreading pain to the left neck and left arm, combined with profuse sweating) to the point where I was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA. After tests determined that I had suffered some sort of stress induced heart event, probably caused by my climb, I underwent catheterization exploratory surgery and now have one stent installed where some blockage caused by the stress occurred. I am resting comfortably; Mrs. Krebs is here and the RN adult leader has returned to the campsite.

A big "thank you" to that leader for riding shotgun and to our fine young men for keeping their wits about them as all this went down. The three other adult leaders have taken charge of the youth at the campsite and I am confident that they all are behaving with skill, level-headedness and aplomb. I am likely to return to Wilmington on Tuesday AM. It continues to be my privilege to serve and instruct these youths.

Oh, and I have been officially waved off from doing outdoor rock climbing in the future by the cardiologist who treated me.

I am resting comfortably and well. Out...

412 It doesn't need a link. Bones in children and adolescents are soft and so is cartilage. There's a reason they don't put young horses in the race and it's not because they are not fast enough or strong enough. It's because they want them to be able to continue racing.

It doesn't stop any of the other training and prep work for the players body or the game. The hard contact on 13. 14, and 15 year olds take too many players out of the competition who could possibly have continued until they reached their physical limitation instead of an avoidable injury.

Make a serious effort to ID all participants in their gatherings, and gather background information on any and all identified.

In Virginia, the class cutoff if the end of September. If your birthday falls on October 1, you are in the grade behind those whose birthday is on September 30.

So during my sophomore year, we had people turning 16 from October 1 until June when school got out. We then had people turning 16 during the summer between Sophomore and Junior year, and then we had those like me turning 16 in September during our junior year.

We also had a screwy set up with our schools in the city I grew up in.

Grades K-6 Elementary school
Grades 7-9 Junior High School
Grades 10-12 Senior High School

Of course when we moved before my senior year, our high school was the standard 9-12 that most high schools have.

Both of my parents actually graduated from the 11th grade. They didn't add a 12th here until 1948. Other states had instituted it earlier.

But 1948 was a bummer for 11th graders. There was no graduating class and everyone in the 11th grade had to go for one more year.

That's how it used to be in the school district I grew up in. Junior High - 7,8,9. High School 10,11,12.

That changed the year I went into 9th grade. THey changed it to middle school - 7,8 (I don't know if 6th grade was in there) and High School 9-12. The number of students had dropped drastically in the late 70s/80s and they had to fire tons of teachers (yay!) and reorganize the schools, selling some off and such.

Not around here. Public schools are starting to get into it big time. I've got friends whose kids are playing it for one of the city's high school teams, and the kids are playing it because it's damn near impossible for the white kids to play basketball or football now. The black kids pretty much won't allow any white kid to be a starter (they tank plays that the white kids are in on), so the white kids have started playing baseball and lacrosse.

What is funny is that when I was in high school in the early 80's, we were a state powerhouse in basketball and football. Now, both those teams suck, badly, and the swimming, baseball and lacrosse (state champs this year) are now state powerhouses.

BTW, my friends whose kids play lacrosse and baseball all played basketball and football with me in high school, and several of them were D1 football and basketball players.

One of the doggos had his spleen removed on Monday, he's on a fuckton of pain killers and tranquilizers, so when he has to go out, I have to go with him. He had a surgery in October for a growth on his side and it rained the entire 2 weeks I had to take him out. He had to have his anal glands removed in January, and it rained the entire week that I needed to take him out for his business. And now, the middle of June of what has been a dry couple of months, it has poured down rain since Tuesday night.

Yeah. BTW, the other doggo (littermate) had her spleen removed in 12/15, and of course it poured down rain the two weeks that she had to go out on her leash for potty time.

That means I get to legally put a vertical grip on the handguard which helps with shooting control.

Our NAVY ship was not involved in an "accident"

Raytheon + that year long mission by the "mini-me" space shuttle = plug & play upgrades to most of our milsat assets which were "hard tasked" due to recent developments like push pins on a sales map all over the sea of Japan so how does a very sophisticated ship of the line with elect/nav/sat eyes looking out 360 for 200+ miles, capable of 0 to 35+ plus knots in the blink of an eye get plowed over by a container ship pushing 14 knots on a GOOD day ?

I will stop here except to say that the CO got "airlifted" off cause he DAMN WELL KNEW and those 7 "missing" crew were probably tasked to electronics stations in the combat center and THEY damn well knew.........

CDRM.....I still read "Proceedings" on occasion, even though it was never intended for us enlisted pukes.

This whole thing stinks like a moldy CHICOM fortune cookie. sure as shit.

He showed me how to sharpen knives, and how to change a tire, and how to use power tools. And he even taught me how to play the piano too.

It was a foam backed siding on the tower only approved for two story and less structures in the USA.

Foam = nasty flammable petrochemical. As to energy savings, walls are not the biggest energy wasters. And a half inch of foam -- even an inch? The R value saving hardly justifies the cost. You're better off increasing the insulation *inside* of the structure.

But greens gotta green.

The 60+ vampires looking to drain Cosby of his fortune are unlikely to win if they can't get a conviction.

Cosby could petition Sessions. That way Sessions would have a chance to win his manhood back.

646 The "Danger on the Right" theme was actively pushed back in the 1960s, when I first became aware of politics. That was the title of an actual books written by a couple of ADL "experts" on "extremism". Of course, W F Buckley was lumped in with the KKK. Not new. And, of course, the treatment of the left was very different - just read Wolf's "Radical Chic" to see it illustrated.

I suppose one could see this new awareness as a positive sign, but I'm too old to fall for that.
