Russia: We May Have Killed al-Baghdadi, Maybe

Well, yeah, if you drop a bomb and there's a bunch of wreckage, sure, you might have killed any number of people.

Bring me his head or his heart so I can tell for sure.

26 My liberal friends on Facebook are in angry denial that the left has a violence problem. This relates to an epiphany that Prager recently recounted: Mainstream liberals are simply unaware of the number of occurrences and the pattern of violence from the left. They think the left is behaving just as badly as the right. It's time to hammer home the disparity between the two sides: Right wing nuts have assaulted a handful of people in the past 15 years, while it's a routine occurrence from the left, which is then rationalized and sympathized by progressive media. This fact requires heavy circulation through social media before they acknowledge it.

The Telegraph noted that cladding “is used as an insulation to make buildings more sustainable to meet green energy requirements.” Some 30,000 buildings in the U.K. have been retrofitted with cladding to cheaply comply with green energy mandates."

I was thinking, a lot of administrative work. Plus at least five sessions of sticking bis ass up in the air and hammering his forehead into the floor, to keep from going to hell.

And raping young boys and girls, because that's how you keep the respect of the men. Even if he's really sick, he's at least got to go through the motions.

126 Oh, it would be just keen if they got him. Or we got him. Or he slipped on a bar of soap, or something.

But the focus on individual leaders is usually mistaken. Sure you try to kill them, but in some cases the focus is quite misleading and over-done.

One tiny bit of reassurance that not everyone has devolved to this shallow approach, esp. when it's clearly merely a small part of the fight - when Zarqawi was nixed, there was a palpable celebratory atmosphere and excitement among the brass (political and military) in-theater, and even the press.

But in a few corners of the operation, people shrugged, said "wahoo" sarcastically, and asked for the 1,000th time why the bridges into Baghdad from known car-bomb-making villages weren't closed in morning rush hour, why the US wasn't even trying to impose its will on the tiny, inept Sunni vermin who were causing 95% of the problem, etc.

I recall that giving me a temporary but amusing bit of hope that not all was lost.

Al-Baghdadi case might be different, a bigger deal, because of the odd nature of the ISIS problem. But these problems rarely are bas
ed on the malevolence or skill of one bad guy.

128 Someone explain to me why the Crusades were wrong again?

The original purpose of the Crusades - - to push back against invasions and incursions by the newly emerging Islamic empires rampaging into Christian areas -- was necessary and admirable.

The problem arose when various noblemen and politicians and tribes and sects started hijacking them for their own purposes. At various times, the western armies marching to Jerusalem began attacking other Christians they deemed their enemies, and/or committing pogroms against Jews, etc. Basically, the Crusades degenerated into squabbles and war-for war's-sake, and they lost sight of the goal -- to push back the spread of Islam. Not all crusades went haywire, but enough did. Even so, the main purpose of the Crusades was moral and just.

Posted by: Under Fire at June 16, 2017 02:23 PM (l4aLi)

Heh. Absorption fridges use ammonia and hydrogen in their refrigerant cycle. Inside heavy steel tube, I might add. The propane is merely the heat source that drives the cycle.

You know, I really don't have a problem with using hydrocarbons as refrigerants in a compressor system. I run them in my car A/C's. Of course, a leak there gets vented outdoors.

In a home? Well, they are doing it wrong. First, no open switches with contacts that might arc. Thermostat should use mercury switch, or magnetic reed switch, both of which have their contacts inside a hermetically-sealed glass bulb. And every home appliance that uses hydrocarbon refrigerant should have incorporated within it an LEL detector, that constantly monitors the air, and sounds a warning if combustible gas is present in the ambient air near the appliance. These things exist, and are not even expensive.

Posted by: Aetius451AD

The 1st was wholly warranted and went a little pear-shaped after conquering Syria and the rest.
Then the fighting among the new 'kingdoms' was pretty stupid. They needed a Geo. Washington to wrangle that crew. Oh and don't march through a fucking desert without a supply-train and, you know, water.

The 2nd lacked coherence and turned into a shitshow of giving the muslims easy wins.

The 3rd started out as a shitshow and only resulted in negotiating with salad-man.

The 4th was a fucking mess thanks to Constapated-ople suddenly deciding they didn't want to help out with their own fucking defense and then pissed all over the europeans. Fuck with an auroch, you're going to get a half-ton of beef up your ass.

The rest was just a miserable series of self-defeating jackassery.

172 In 1867 the Emperor of Ethiopia sent a letter to Queen Victoria, asking her assistance in launching a Crusade to liberate Jerusalem from the Ottomans. The British government didn't even reply to that half-baked idea. The Emperor was so insulted he kidnapped & tortured the British consul, and his replacement that was sent to negotiate for his release. That was a line too far for the Brits, so they launched a punitive raid against Ethiopia to rescue the hostages.

174 146 Whether they got Baghdadi or not, the key element here is that Russia is bombing the shit out of ISIS, which is a good thing.

I think the decision to let the Russians handle it was made long ago. But they can't openly admit it. Who's gonna trust the US if we're your ally one day and not the next?

So we helped kick ISIS out of Iraq and are helping our putative allies in Syria with speeches and UN resolutions.

And there was her first introduction to Putin, where she showed up wearing ridiculously high FMPs, and a skirt slit to mid-thigh. A call girl would have been embarrassed by those wardrobe choices.

Where her first words to Putin (described as having been "purred" instead of conversationally spoken) were "Vladimir, Vladimir," rather than speaking to him with his last name and honorific.

What a piece of work that woman is.

It's doubly hilarious in that Putin was completely unimpressed by MeAgain, and proceeded to alternately ignore her or berate her in his interview responses.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is literally a nom de guerre. "Abu" means "father". The guy who founded Fatah called himself "Abu Nidal", or "The father of the struggle".

The prefix "al" just means "of" or "from". Like "von" in German.

So Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi literally means "The father of Bakr of Baghdad". Abu Bakr is a historical figure in Islam.

Posted by: CN at June 16, 2017 02:56 PM (2+tI4)

Ruled involuntary manslaughter because of her wanton and reckless conduct. The boyfriend had gotten out of the truck when it was filling with carbon monoxide, and she told him to "get back in".

The judge found those three words to be at her directive, wanton and reckless conduct. All of her urging to the boyfriend to kill himself earlier , before he actually started to attempt it, the judge discounted.

Yes, he made the decision to get back in, but if another human being is in physical , emotional, or mental distress, and you are aware they are in further danger, you have a duty under the law to seek help for that person. You can't legally tramp on someone's fingers who are holding onto a ledge, or provide a drunk at the bar additional alcohol until he falls off the stool and dies.

For all the really nasty things Trump said about him during the campaign, such as calling him "Little Marco" questions about his dad and Oswald, etc. Rubio was on fire with Trump praise for the rollback of the Obama "let's send Castro a lot of money" agreement when he introduced Trump in Miami today. I disagree. You cannot have a civilized society in which people feel free to urge someone to kill or injure themselves when they are in a mentally fragile state. Where does it end? How about adults encouraging children to jump off of buildings, set themselves on fire, give them drugs, etc.

They bear NO responsibility for their assistance in the injury to either a child or mentally unstable person, neither of whom has the rationale capability and understanding at that point in time to fully judge what they are doing?

They thought the Brits were really, really close to suing for peace, and just a little more hardship would prompt them to vote out Churchill and bring in someone who would end the war. Hell, they were so sure the Brits were done after Dunkirk they didn't even have a plan for continuing the war. Not for another six weeks.

319 I am giving Rubio credit. Literally, it's like he found out last week that Trump is actually his long lost uncle who saved his family from Castro. His speech geared to the people of Cuba was great, including how he first gave it in English, then reiterated it in perfect Spanish.

336 on Michelle Carter case

The judge focused his ruling on three words Carter said to the 18-year-old Roy after he climbed out of his truck as it was filling with toxic gas and told her he was scared.

"Get back in," Carter told Roy, according to a friend who testified that Carter described the conversation in a text message to her about a month after Roy died.

The judge said those words constituted "wanton and reckless conduct."

He said Carter, then 17, had a duty to call someone for help when she knew Roy was attempting suicide. Yet she did not call the police or Roy's family, he noted.

"She did not issue a simple additional instruction: Get out of the truck," the judge said.

Ultimately, it was the duty to warn or report that is the basis of the crime, I assume. As I can't see a "penalty" for not following the "direction".

This is the case in most states, if you see an accident or someone in physical harm, you have a duty to make the 911 call. Only in Vermont is there a duty to intervene

The surface commerce raiders would ultimately have been rolled up and finished off in just the same way that Doenitz's U-boat forces were.

That's interesting alternative history right there: Doenitz relieved early on and replaced by any of several capable subordinate officers.

It would have been hard for such a successor not to immediately realize the obvious truth which had been pounding loudly and fruitlessly on Doenitz's office door: that his Enigma fleet comms were compromised and he was constantly ordering his subs into ASW traps.

War still is lost by Germany in the end but at far greater cost to the Allied maritime effort.

It seems to me he's misreading Ace, who isn't saying either"they deserve to payback" or "if they get payback, they'll know how it feels." (Those are the two points, as JG presents them.) But the actual argument is different: not getting even, not an appeal to their better nature (hah!), but deterrence. Ace's point, as I understand it, is that they will have no reason to stop so long as it helps them to continue. It is only when they see they are paying a price, that they will reconsider.

(I might have made a comment to this effect there, but I quit commenting on NRO about a year ago, and besides, I don't do facebook.)

459 One of the first things you notice after opening a jar of Coco Loko is that it looks like hot chocolate mix. Snorting a line of the brown powder with specks of white confirms its familiar flavor, followed by a rush of energy.

Americans are beginning to see the product alongside candy bars and energy pills at local shops as the Florida company Legal Lean moves to take a European club-drug trend mainstream.

"I can see it taking off, as long as it doesn't get too controversial," says Nick Anderson, director of marketing for the five-person Orlando company. "We feel like we're cutting edge in what we're doing."

Snorting chocolate has received significant international attention since 2007, when Belgian chocolatier Dominique Persoone created a device he calls the Chocolate Shooter to snort cocoa (not cacao) powder. Health conscious European clubgoers separately use raw cacao in pills and drinks for its mildly euphoric, energizing effects.

I hate that terribly incorrect example. You can't yell "Fire!" in a movie theater. You can't yell ANYTHING in a movie theater! It's friggin private property where first amendment rights have nothing to do with anything. You can be kicked out of a movie theater for doing any of a host of totally legal things that the movie theater owners decide are not allowed to be done on their property.

Posted by: TheQuietMan at June 16, 2017 03:33 PM (493sH)

I don't think it'll work.

German grocery chain Aldi is undergoing massive expansion, and similar German grocery chain Lidl is entering the US market in a major way.

German grocers have already stomped on Walmart in Germany, so I don't think they're too scared of Amazon.
Posted by: Country Boy at June 16, 2017 03:36 PM (Jcg9Q)

Competition is good.

That said, Amazon is creating multiple ways to make money. Lose money in one division, make it up in another. He does go for pretty thin margins, part of the customer-focused vision of the company. So long as Bezos runs the company, don't think you'll see huge price jumps.

486 I'd say the bigger news in groceries today was the plunge in Kroger's stock. Sudden loss of confidence leads to panic in business decisions. Kroger suggests there may be some consolidation coming. And for you Wednesday shoppers -- you know who you are, writing those slow-ass checks at the manual checkout counter -- next week is your last 5% senior discount.

So far they bluff that they can stay even with even more discounting. Once the activist institutional shareholders make a meeting, you'll see them all over the map on strategies. As you walk past the Kroger door, touch that wall and you'll see that it's made of brick and mortar, a damnable term just now.

There exists the serious possibility that in not too many years, your grocery shopping choices may be online BezosMart, and the moral equivalent of the Dollar Store. Then Ow My Balls won't seem as funny. But you will finally be able to walk across my lawn.

Wellllllll......Sometimes intent is criminal as well. I mean, criminal conspiracy, for instance. The point is that he is incapable of helping himself (being mentally ill). Its a bit like setting a man trap. You aren't allowed to leave things around that you know people will hurt themselves with, in order to hurt them. You aren't allowed to behave in a way that you know will cause harm, in order to cause harm.

Here I think you can argue that a) he was not in his right mind and b) she was trying to hurt him and c) she had many many opportunities to stop herself, and she chose not to. I mean, it wasn't a single bad call or spur of the moment stupidity/scruntishness: this is a dangerous malice.

Hitler could have conceivably developed the A-Bomb and jet fighter / bomber that would have overshadowed any Russian build up. Of course this is just a thought game and I don't pretend to know.

I do use it though to support our continued pursuit to stay ahead of our adversaries . Just think if Britain had the F-80 in 1939. Hitler would not have even thought about starting a war. That's just 4 years before it was actually developed.

501 And add to that: his mental illness is important because its symptomatology makes it perfectly clear that she knew that what she was doing could hurt him. If he had been a sane, healthy guy and she'd said "go kill yourself" and he had,. she could have argued that really, she had no idea he'd do it. But she KNEW he had issues. She KNEW he was viulnerable. So its like putting a bear trap in front of a toddler and saying: "Boy if you step on that its gonna hurt. I dare you!". You can't afterwards say "The kid stepped on it himself! I told him it would hurt!"
