Overnight Open Thread (16 Jun 2017)

This won't help you win the middle Democrats. List of attacks against conservatives is growing.

Oh and this seems to be a growing trend as well. California Democrat official yells at gay GOP volunteer: "Which one of you a$$holes is the gay?" Where's that love of diversity and tolerance eh? Oh that's right, Democrats expect certain types of folks to be homogenous in thought and behavior.

NakeFit

I could actually see these being useful at waterslide parks where you always have to take your sandals/flip flops off before the rides and you really don't want to walk all around the park barefoot on the concrete. NakeFit, clever stick-on waterproof soles that protect bare feet bottoms from the ground.

Lowering The Bar

The cheapening of a college degree continues. Oxford rewrites history exam to make it easier for women to get top grades. Note, all students will be able to take the exam under the new rules which means closing the gap may not occur as both sexes will avail themselves of the less stringent opportunity.

Wice

Pretty good for long drives.

Hobby Horses

I'm sure this'll be an Olympic sport soon. Just when you thought that Western Civilization couldn't die even more stupidly.

In other news of the demise of Western Civilization, the Army's transgender policy includes guidelines on male pregnancies.

Guns

Reason why I'll always take a good guy with a gun over a delusional belief in a gun free zone. Men hailed as heroes for holding murderous fugitives at gunpoint.

Corgi vs Chook

NSFW!

Skynet Comes Closer

Microsoft's "Divide and Conquers" AI just obliterated Ms. Pac-Man.

The notoriously tricky video game Ms. Pac-Man has proved no match for artificial intelligence software, with Microsoft's latest bots able to achieve the maximum high-score of 999,990 - something neither human nor machine has managed before.

Unemployed

Not surprising. Unemployed Americans said it would be easier to find jobs with less illegal aliens around.

Amphibious Assaults

Are amphibious assaults still relevant. Yes, but they are much harder to pull off in today's environment.

Huge Question:

I have heard in media that Hodgkinson used an AR-15, or an SKS, or that the AR was in 7.62. Does anyone know the truth of this? Glen Beck was on while I was driving to a work site ( I don't generally listen to him) and he made a total hash of the subject.

Truths anyone?

I first read it was some .223 (or 5.62mm) but then heard it was an SKS which shoots that 7.62x39mm, same thing the AK-47s shoot.

Hell I don't know. Whichever, it was a sideways hit to the pelvis and did a hell of a lot of damage. I wonder if what some sort of soft point or hollow point ammo?

But hell, that sideways pelvis shot can make a mess no matter what it is, and the media will never get this stuff accurate. They don't want to.

Completely a function of the production run and design spec of the ammo in question, regardless of caliber.

There are certain rounds available for the SKS which are not going to fragment at all _in vivo_, and not ricochet or deflect much if they transect bone.

The .556 was nasty when the guns had a 1:14 twist in the barrel. then they went to a 1:12 twist and it was a little more stable. The shorter guns like the CAR15 were real nasty with the keyhole thing because the "military" 10.5" barrel didn't give the bullet one revolution. Now they use a 1:7 twist so its way more stable. The older guns were definitely more nasty.

My cousin who was in Vietnam said it best. You get shot in the shoulder it will come out your asshole.

Japanese home-island waters are crowded but normally well policed and neatly disciplined (this was reported as a stone's throw from Yokosuka).

Elsewhere in oceanic Asia, there are tons of poorly kept up, incompetently mastered tramp freighters. Sometimes deliberately running without lights after sundown because of what they're carrying and where they're bound.

It happens. No lanes at sea. I put into Tokyo Wan, once. It's a zoo. Worse than Gibraltar, the English Channel, Strait of Malacca, Norfolk, New York City, and Bremerhaven. 110,000 shaft horsepower only works when the brain is engaged and the team is on top of things.

Tokyo has Traffic Separations schemes, yes, but with a boatload of ships. Nighttime was tough, with all the lights. Radar was hard to keep up.

There have been plenty more embarrassing collisions involving US Navy ships, including aircraft carriers; looking at you Coral Sea - that ship did not make a course change in 6 hours and you still hit it. The worst was the Aegis CG that collided with a backing CVN.

Posted by: The Subversive Hat at June 16, 2017 10:37 PM (vBeA5)

143 Thought about this earlier today but it didn't fit into any earlier thread.

Spengler today: "Gen. Flynn has no choice as a matter of self-preservation but to hold his peace and presently cannot defend himself in public. "
http://tinyurl.com/ycek8m6d

Rod Rosenstein yesterday on anonymous allegations: "The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations."
http://tinyurl.com/y9cqwuwz

During the Whitewater investigation Clinton cronies would emerge from their Grand Jury testimony and hold a press conference where they would speak to what questions they were asked and what they answered. They lied. They lied knowing that the rules of Grand Jury secrecy would prevent anyone who knew the truth from calling them to account. Weaponizing "privileges" and secrecy laws/rules.

This was done to set in the public's mind, a narrative, a story of blue-nosed evangelical busybodies hell bent on bringing down, that glorious defender of freedom and America, Bill Clinton, using a young naive stalker-girl to do so. It worked, even after the blue dress, for enough of the Party faithful. Now the same playbook is being pulled out but this time to destroy a President not save one.

The unsourced "leakers," (if they even exist and are not just figments in the imagination of the journalists) know that what they are leaking usually can't be refuted due to legal restraints on the people who know that lies are being leaked. Just as in the 90s thugs like to fight an opponent that is tied up and lying on the ground.

They are lying to cause a reaction. What they say points to just what action they want to happen. What they say is happening isn't necessarily what they want to happen. It is just a lever to provoke the action they do want. Terrorism is similar in this. It is done not for the act itself but to get a reaction, a reaction that is desired, needed.

There is a certain minimum range, under which the certain radars filter out the return, depending on which range-gate and filters are set.

Warships carry both civilian and various military frequency navigation radars, not to mention all of the weapons system ones.

I think that someone on the bridge thought someone else on the bridge was standing proper radar watch.

They weren't.

315 Jim,

DDG was hit on the starboard side! With controllable pitch propellers and all back full she should have had sternway on in less that the length of the DDG. Alternately, Flank 3 to clear the area.

The 7 crew members were likely in their racks or on watch in Aux Machinery Room 1 (AMR 1). Two berthing areas flooded.

Lots of detailed questions we do not know the answer to. Like, how much warning? Was the collision alarm sounded? Was the watertight hatch on the port exit from berthing dogged to prevent flooding? While crew was still in berthing? Were any of the escape trunks from AMR 1 usable?

My guess, the CO was on the bridge wing or on the starboard side of the bridge trying to unfuck the situation. There is a lot of kinetic energy with a collision at sea. Hope he pulls through.

He would rather they sit passively with their pinkies extended, their bow ties tied correctly.

The right way to do it would be with another Shakespeare soliloquy, damning what they're up to. That way they couldn't call you an anti-culture dummy.

Any other suggestions? The history plays are just full of bitches and jokes about political quibbling, because there's so much of it in them.

Come to think of it, there's some pretty good stuff right there in the Caesar play. Get the idea most actors don't really know what their plays are about?

505 Good night everyone. Have a serene day.

A collision at sea ruins your whole day. Sad. It's always sad. And yet, almost all ships do not collide. So there is the context.

Maybe we need less training on cultural issues like supporting feelings, and more time with relative motion and ship-handling. The ship was off their homeport, so the crew should have been alive to the local situation.

And nobody in CIC was paying attention?

My Scientifical wild ass guess? It was a pissing contest as to who had the right of way... and once it was too late, both ships, trying to turn away, turned INTO each other...

Had a merchant once put us into a big ass Sea Buoy... doing that exact thing... knocked a 12 foot hole in the side of the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2)

You're very likely on the right track with that. But I'd also wager that some intrepid sailor was calling out incorrect ranges from a 'scope with the dials turned to the wrong ranges or filters.

Rules of Navigation aside, in a crowded seaway, that container ship is going to have the right of way due to it's restricted maneuverability. It can't slam on the brakes or make a maximum angle of heel turn like the warship.

If the seaway was really that crowded, lookouts should have been on the bridge-wings with NVG gear and headsets. If it wasn't a rush-hour ship channel, then a good radar watch ought to have sufficed.

I've had to ride the scope at 3 am in the Houston Ship Channel, aboard a 67 ft. Stephens Motor Yacht. Commercial Simrad radar, networked to a Commercial Simrad Chartplotter/GPS with 14 in. screen.

Setting the filters up to not wash out the returns from the channel markers, you could easily not resolve a ship's return if it was within a quarter-mile. Good thing everyone was lit up like seagoing Christmas Trees.... make the Mk. 1 Eyeball a good nav tool even in moonless conditions.

There's a good reason why a Merchant Marine "Able Bodied Sailor", will have an SCTW '95, with Radar, Fire and Lifeboat tickets, punched and current.

Stuff ain't as easy as it looks, when you're actually out there doing it.

And I've only had to try to stay on top of it in the small boat world. Major tonnage under way is a whole 'nuther proposition.

Much over 100 Tons, and I'm very quickly in over my head, and I know it. I'll just sit in the back corner of the bridge, and watch the pros at work, if you please.

510 Listerine. I should have known.
I met a member of the founding family, years ago. He had some tales to tell!

They tried unsuccessfully to market it as a wound dressing, a dandruff treatment, and a VD cure, before they stumbled on halitosis. And halitosis was a hard sell. Hunnert years back, only certain oversophisticates got close enough to other people to notice their breath or "B.O." It took a heap of moralizing advertising to beat us all into shape on those issues.

Shakespeare invented the word "lonesome." That's hard to beat.

John Bunyan, and Milton, are a big deal, too, just because for a century or two those would be the books other than the Bible that people had in their homes. So they learned them by heart, and quoted them at length. A lot stuck.

As maids call medlars when they laugh alone.
O Romeo, that she were! Oh, that she were
An open arse, and thou a poperin pear

Now, look up "Medlar fruit" in Google Images. Look them over. What does that like that? Well, he tells you, "open ass".

Now, what's a poperin pear? That's a pun, on "per 'her in", an Elizabethan term for the "beast with two backs". You know, pop in the ol' John Thomas.

Now, the lemon sucking scolds will argue he's not taking about *that*. Shakespeare would never talk of butt stuff. No siree Bob tail. All they can argue is he was talking of regular beasting with two backs, there.

575 Evening horde.

Think I may have posted about this a couple of months ago, but competing with the hobby horse "sport" for lame, sjw-friendly pastimes is quiddich. Apparently played by real college students on real college campuses (local news had a story about it being played at UC Berkeley). Kind of like the game they play in the Hairy Pooter movies, only without the flying or the little autonomous flying ball thingy. In other words, a bunch of doofuses, dufusettes, and doofuxes running around with sticks between their legs. Looks like a good way to get a broomstick in your eye socket.

Don't believe me?

I don't see a problem with it.

The fact that pop culture thinks it is ok to joke about assassinations...right after they prompted someone to try an assassination is beyond the pale.

Of course the irony is that the assassination of Caeser utterly failed. In the end his heir became Rome's first emperor and ended the Republic. There is at least a chance that had they let him live to a natural end that the Republic might have come back.

On the other hand had Sulla been a bit more complete in eliminating the Marians Caeser wouldn't even merit a footnote.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPlpphT7n9s

It sounds quite a bit like pirate talk to me, and oddly enough, that was about the time when English-speaking pirates flourished.

It also sounds about halfway between Chaucer's English and modern English, and it literally is, chronologically speaking.

There's things that used to rhyme, but not longer do, and that can help one piece it together.

603 One way they used to find out how English used to sound was finding populations who'd been cut off from the rest of the world for quite a while. Some people on barrier islands off Virginia and the Carolinas were found to be speaking, essentially, 18th century everyday English. This method gets harder with broadcasting.

If you can do the Chaucer vowel shift, you can make ordinary modern English sound very old and foreign.

I do wonder how much of owning and showing a horse is an exercise in conspicuous consumption.

I
work with horsey people who have kids who show horses and they have
barns and such. I have never believed that owning something gave me such
inherent value.

Posted by: Kindltot at June 17, 2017 12:07 AM (mkDpn)

look I am not gonna lie there are people for whom thats just what it is.
i mean the ugliest kind of conspicuous too. i knew a kid whose cheuffer used to put her riding bood on her feet for her. i know women who have to have the latest thing type bloodlines from the latest thing breed. in the color the judges all like (dark brown, no white.)
also i know horses are the best thing for little girls ever. they teach you humility duty and responsibility. you learn consequences and you learn about the satisfaction of hard work paying off when you ride that pony get him to a show all cleaned up and get your ribbon. you also learn if you turn your back he rolls in the mud and all your hard work os for nothing and you miss your class. you find out if you are lazy you can harm or even kill your horse. or at the very least, if you dont practice he wont behave, and will embarrass you at the show. You learn that your trainer is the boss because they know what they are doing and you are wasting your money if you dont listen, but if you do... and you work hard, you will win. You also learn that there is always someone richer, with a better trainer and a better horse than you, and that they will beat you, unless you make up for your lack with hard work and perfect performance. You find out some judges just dont like you. There was one who was always particularly hard on my sister but not me. She hated that but you dont get to pick the judge, though you can pick what shows you go to and you might skip one that has a judge that hates you, unless you need the points.
these are all preparation for life in the world as a person who is not a snowflake. dont knock horses.

I do unfuck the fuckups of the people who conspicuously consume. they want a rare breed, they see on pintrest that it is a peculiar shiny gold and they WANT that. They think its like a Thoroughbred, it LOOKS like one, only SPECIAL. ugh. They import and expensive one from Russia and then the fun begins. Its not like a thoroughbred, its like a particularly high strung and intelligent mule...thats an acrobat. They get mad. they get hurt. The trainer wants no part of it. they want to sell them something easier to handle and from their sale barn where they get a commission from it. In the end there is wreckage. I offer to make it go away, and make it better without anyone finding out what happened.

i have eight very expensive horses. seven them are salvage. A couple are horses that i am the only person who ENJOYS handling them. They are all beautiful... but my life is one of dirt and grime and fly spray and most of the time i smell bad and am covered in horse hair. Yes i wear a special boot you can only find sold in england. Im on my feet all day i better have boots that are both comfy and safe. my jeans are dirty, my OD green Tshirts are dirty, my braid is dusty and i have leaves and hay in my hair most times. Most horsewomen have skin like leather and faces that are lined by the sun.

are there dressage queens and little princesses that hand off their horses to trainers and grooms and only ride and like to be seen at the hunt club or the shows? sure.
you will never have more fun than with cowhorse people. they are born morons. none are snowflakes. you cant be. those horses are worth some huge bucks. training for cowhorses is more expensive than dressage horses. you have to pay for the cows. its so competitive its its own sickness like addiction. we dont do it for conspicuous consumption, though, its because chasing cows is FUN, and winning is even FUNNER.
this is said by someone who has broken her back riding jumpers, had some of the nicest cowhorses you could sit on, and who now rehabilitates rare breed horses and Tennessee Walking Horses, who are show horses who suffer just about as much as a horse could for the sake for conspicuous consumption. there are all facets to the horsey lifestyle. Some is good some is bad. Some just is what it is.

618 POOP, the video linked at 593 gives a pretty good explanation of how they reconstructed the sound of Shakespeare's English. For one, there were contemporary written accounts of how words sounded. I've never seen ace say that of the tactics to copy, shutting down the freeway is one of them. His point has been that you are supposed to make it difficult for the left, the ones that are pushing all this garbage and rules on the right, so they cry uncle. Not the public in general.

The crazy guy in NORK for whatever communicates with Rodman. And Trump personally knows Rodman from the Apprentice and out and about. It's not like he doesn't know what the guy is all about, or understand that he will be ridiculed. And it's not like Rodman is going to be negotiating nuclear deals.

But I'll bet it goes a pretty way in opening some doors and maybe diffusing some crap in the future.

Makes as much sense as giving the Queen of England an Ipod full of the black messiah's speeches.

Huh. I didn't know that Trump knows Rodman.

It'd be a hell of a thing if Dennis Rodman helps defuse a potential nuclear crisis.

The Royal Court was the celebrities of the day. Gossip was probably all over the place, with the lowly workers of that spreading lots of stuff to people who would listen. Probably quite a few that would have loved to pass on something about a dickhead noble to see the dumb shit he did get skewered in a play.

No, unfortunately. I don't have access to the offices where the computers are. It's not a huge problem; the data was for a paper that I'm rewriting to submit as part of job applications. It's just annoying, because I wanted to finish the first draft tonight and spend a couple hours reviewing it on Monday. Instead, I'll probably not finish it until Wednesday.

I wish it was a next thing you know story, but more of a needless to say. I've been working weekends for the last month so I thought-why the hell not-blow off Wednesday and make the drive to the MGM Grand.

Beltway, rush hour ... GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

Great show. Rise Against played a set, as did Three Trapped Tigers (an English pub band about to make it big here), and Thrice. I avoided the mosh pit because there was some real beef in there (one dude had to have been 300 pounds ... nfw was I going to get smashed up by that) ...

pretty good mix of their catalogue ... surprised they played Phantom Bride though.

Posted by: rich still lurking at June 17, 2017 03:20 AM (rYW/M)

677 Rich,

I'm running a regression of wages against military service. The independent variables I'm using are AGE (in years), AGE^2, SEX (1 if female), RACE (1 if black), a set of dummies representing high school, associates, and bachelor's completion, and a set of dummies for length of service (6mo-2yrs, 2-3yrs, 3-4yrs, ..., 20+ yrs). The problem is that when I run my regressions, I keep running into the same error: "Near singular matrix error. Regressors may be perfectly collinear." I've narrowed it down to one specific term, "sex*yrsserv_7". I pull out that term, the regression is fine.

Normally that error message means that I've fallen into the Dummy Variable Trap, and removing one of the dummy variables, or the constant, will solve the problem. However, in this case both SEX and YRSSERV_7 are fine on their own. It's that specific interaction term that causes problems, and I don't know why.

>>> I've narrowed it down to one specific term, "sex*yrsserv_7". I pull out that term, the regression is fine.

682 Good morning everyone.

Posted by: Tickled Pink at June 17, 2017 04:06 AM (smD62)

683 yrsserv_7 is a dummy that is 1 if they served between 15-19 years. The census bureau data I had available broke service time down into categories and didn't give actual years served for each observation.

Basically SEX*YRSSERV_7 should equal "1" if the observation is a woman who served between 15-19 years.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at June 17, 2017 04:06 AM (Tnhbr)

684 Ok, I think I figured this out. I just built a new series test = SEX*YRSSERV_7 and it came out all zeros. I think that none of the observations in my data set are women who've served that length of time, so it's throwing an error. I'll just remove the term and run with the resulting regression.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at June 17, 2017 04:12 AM (Tnhbr)

685 hummm a multi-collinerarity

>>>Multicollinearity does not reduce the predictive power or reliability of the model as a whole, at least within the sample data set; it only affects calculations regarding individual predictors. That is, a multiple regression model with correlated predictors can indicate how well the entire bundle of predictors predicts the outcome variable, but it may not give valid results about any individual predictor, or about which predictors are redundant with respect to others.

that is from wiki ... the helpful part blew up the comment block ... and none of the eview help forum thread looked helpful.

It's been a while since I've done it, but you may want to try running a Partial Least Squares model on your data. Most statistical software packages offer that capability. It sounds though, on a perfunctory reading of this thread, that you discovered you have a misbehaving (i.e., insufficiently varying) predictor variable.

Of course, all really top-notch mathematical modellers know you must (must!) turn on the HSFF option (hockey stick fudge factor) to obtain a predictive model that adheres to "settled science"!
