PHILIPPINE SEA (NNS) -- USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time, June 17, while operating about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan.
The
Japanese Coast Guard is on scene and providing assistance at the
request of the U.S. Navy. Japan Coast Guard cutters IZUNAMI and KANO are
on station, as well as a helicopter.
The USS Fitzgerald is under her own power, although her propulsion is limited.
The
USS Fitzgerald suffered damage on her starboard side above and below
the waterline. The collision resulted in some flooding. The ship's crew
is responding to the casualty. The full extent of damage is being
determined.
The extent of number of personnel injuries is being
determined. Currently working with the Japanese Coast Guard to conduct a
medevac via helicopter for one Sailor.
The USS Dewey (DDG 105),
medical assistance and two Navy tugs are being dispatched as quickly as
practicable to provide assistance. Naval aircraft are also being
readied.

I have heard in media that Hodgkinson used an AR-15, or an SKS, or that the AR was in 7.62. Does anyone know the truth of this? Glen Beck was on while I was driving to a work site ( I don't generally listen to him) and he made a total hash of the subject.

Much physical improvement today. Something went "sproinngggg", and snapped back into place.
Deep, persistent but lessening residual pain. But not "Bolt of Lightning from Hell" pain, at least for now.

I first read it was some .223 (or 5.62mm) but then heard it was an SKS which shoots that 7.62x39mm, same thing the AK-47s shoot.
Hell I don't know. Whichever, it was a sideways hit to the pelvis and did a hell of a lot of damage. I wonder if what some sort of soft point or hollow point ammo?
But hell, that sideways pelvis shot can make a mess no matter what it is, and the media will never get this stuff accurate. They don't want to.

I was just curious because the .556 has a bad reputation for ricochete inside the body, I don't know so much about the 7.62x39. As I understand it the slug went through both hip bones and fragged. It makes my stomach turn to think of how bad life will be for Mr. Scalise. I really hate that the bastard died, I would prefer for him to suffer a bit more. -Plus find out who his friends are.

Completely a function of the production run and design spec of the ammo in question, regardless of caliber.
There are certain rounds available for the SKS which are not going to fragment at all _in vivo_, and not ricochet or deflect much if they transect bone.

The .556 was nasty when the guns had a 1:14 twist in the barrel. then they went to a 1:12 twist and it was a little more stable. The shorter guns like the CAR15 were real nasty with the keyhole thing because the "military" 10.5" barrel didn't give the bullet one revolution. Now they use a 1:7 twist so its way more stable. The older guns were definitely more nasty.
My cousin who was in Vietnam said it best. You get shot in the shoulder it will come out your asshole.

Japanese home-island waters are crowded but normally well policed and neatly disciplined (this was reported as a stone's throw from Yokosuka).
Elsewhere in oceanic Asia, there are tons of poorly kept up, incompetently mastered tramp freighters. Sometimes deliberately running without lights after sundown because of what they're carrying and where they're bound.

Insurance usually doesn't cover it but you get an 'ambiance' add-on, soft lighting and sound by Barry White is most popular, for the more adventuresome there are strobes, sirens, and Ministry.

I am too old for in your face protests that may turn physically violent, but I could do something like this since I am retired and have no worries about the losing your job or what about your kids aspect of things. I can do a night in the jail easy since I have no need for daily medication, can sleep anywhere, and bail is no problem.
It is something to consider as far as doing my part. Only concern would be risking my CPL.

It happens. No lanes at sea. I put into Tokyo Wan, once. It's a zoo. Worse than Gibraltar, the English Channel, Strait of Malacca, Norfolk, New York City, and Bremerhaven. 110,000 shaft horsepower only works when the brain is engaged and the team is on top of things.
Tokyo has Traffic Separations schemes, yes, but with a boatload of ships. Nighttime was tough, with all the lights. Radar was hard to keep up.
There have been plenty more embarrassing collisions involving US Navy ships, including aircraft carriers; looking at you Coral Sea - that ship did not make a course change in 6 hours and you still hit it. The worst was the Aegis CG that collided with a backing CVN.

The 7 crew members were likely in their racks or on watch in Aux Machinery Room 1 (AMR 1). Two berthing areas flooded.
Lots of detailed questions we do not know the answer to. Like, how much warning? Was the collision alarm sounded? Was the watertight hatch on the port exit from berthing dogged to prevent flooding? While crew was still in berthing? Were any of the escape trunks from AMR 1 usable?
My guess, the CO was on the bridge wing or on the starboard side of the bridge trying to unfuck the situation. There is a lot of kinetic energy with a collision at sea. Hope he pulls through.

It was a rating requirement for US Pony Club. 3 yr old Thoroughbred/Clydesdale - she ended up spending almost $20,000 for 1 yr in up keep/feed/medical. At the time our daughter was 14. But she worked and saved to spend that money on her horse. Now she is going into International Business.

The right way to do it would be with another Shakespeare soliloquy, damning what they're up to. That way they couldn't call you an anti-culture dummy.
One I have in mind is the dressing down Henry V gives the conspirators, just before he offs 'em. It's a-waise before St Crispians Day, but same play.
Any other suggestions? The history plays are just full of bitches and jokes about political quibbling, because there's so much of it in them.
Come to think of it, there's some pretty good stuff right there in the Caesar play. Get the idea most actors don't really know what their plays are about?

You're very likely on the right track with that. But I'd also wager that some intrepid sailor was calling out incorrect ranges from a 'scope with the dials turned to the wrong ranges or filters.
Rules of Navigation aside, in a crowded seaway, that container ship is going to have the right of way due to it's restricted maneuverability. It can't slam on the brakes or make a maximum angle of heel turn like the warship.
If the seaway was really that crowded, lookouts should have been on the bridge-wings with NVG gear and headsets. If it wasn't a rush-hour ship channel, then a good radar watch ought to have sufficed.
I've had to ride the scope at 3 am in the Houston Ship Channel, aboard a 67 ft. Stephens Motor Yacht. Commercial Simrad radar, networked to a Commercial Simrad Chartplotter/GPS with 14 in. screen.
Setting the filters up to not wash out the returns from the channel markers, you could easily not resolve a ship's return if it was within a quarter-mile. Good thing everyone was lit up like seagoing Christmas Trees.... make the Mk. 1 Eyeball a good nav tool even in moonless conditions.
There's a good reason why a Merchant Marine "Able Bodied Sailor", will have an SCTW '95, with Radar, Fire and Lifeboat tickets, punched and current.
Stuff ain't as easy as it looks, when you're actually out there doing it.
And I've only had to try to stay on top of it in the small boat world. Major tonnage under way is a whole 'nuther proposition.
Much over 100 Tons, and I'm very quickly in over my head, and I know it. I'll just sit in the back corner of the bridge, and watch the pros at work, if you please.

I have wondered the same thing bc the people here in CO seem to own horses not to learn to ride but mostly to show them off. That said, maybe they just like to look at them bc they are beautiful, magnificent animals and that is reason enough to care for them. I don't really know though.

At my first colonoscopy, they used an anesthesia that I'm immune to. It wasn't fun but I've been through much, much worse at the hands of doctors.
They used propofol for my second colonoscopy and that knocked me out.

Think I may have posted about this a couple of months ago, but competing with the hobby horse "sport" for lame, sjw-friendly pastimes is quiddich. Apparently played by real college students on real college campuses (local news had a story about it being played at UC Berkeley). Kind of like the game they play in the Hairy Pooter movies, only without the flying or the little autonomous flying ball thingy. In other words, a bunch of doofuses, dufusettes, and doofuxes running around with sticks between their legs. Looks like a good way to get a broomstick in your eye socket.

The fact that pop culture thinks it is ok to joke about assassinations...right after they prompted someone to try an assassination is beyond the pale.
Of course the irony is that the assassination of Caeser utterly failed. In the end his heir became Rome's first emperor and ended the Republic. There is at least a chance that had they let him live to a natural end that the Republic might have come back.
On the other hand had Sulla been a bit more complete in eliminating the Marians Caeser wouldn't even merit a footnote.

In all seriousness, no one can know. Even those that might speak using the same words cannot know that they are pronouncing things the same as back long before there were any recordings. Populations change the way they speak over time and they are not necessarily even aware of it.
There is just no way to really know how things were pronounced in 1600.

i mean the ugliest kind of conspicuous too. i knew a kid whose cheuffer used to put her riding bood on her feet for her. i know women who have to have the latest thing type bloodlines from the latest thing breed. in the color the judges all like (dark brown, no white.)
also i know horses are the best thing for little girls ever. they teach you humility duty and responsibility. you learn consequences and you learn about the satisfaction of hard work paying off when you ride that pony get him to a show all cleaned up and get your ribbon. you also learn if you turn your back he rolls in the mud and all your hard work os for nothing and you miss your class. you find out if you are lazy you can harm or even kill your horse. or at the very least, if you dont practice he wont behave, and will embarrass you at the show. You learn that your trainer is the boss because they know what they are doing and you are wasting your money if you dont listen, but if you do... and you work hard, you will win. You also learn that there is always someone richer, with a better trainer and a better horse than you, and that they will beat you, unless you make up for your lack with hard work and perfect performance. You find out some judges just dont like you. There was one who was always particularly hard on my sister but not me. She hated that but you dont get to pick the judge, though you can pick what shows you go to and you might skip one that has a judge that hates you, unless you need the points.
these are all preparation for life in the world as a person who is not a snowflake. dont knock horses.
I do unfuck the fuckups of the people who conspicuously consume. they want a rare breed, they see on pintrest that it is a peculiar shiny gold and they WANT that. They think its like a Thoroughbred, it LOOKS like one, only SPECIAL. ugh. They import and expensive one from Russia and then the fun begins. Its not like a thoroughbred, its like a particularly high strung and intelligent mule...thats an acrobat. They get mad. they get hurt. The trainer wants no part of it. they want to sell them something easier to handle and from their sale barn where they get a commission from it. In the end there is wreckage. I offer to make it go away, and make it better without anyone finding out what happened.
i have eight very expensive horses. seven them are salvage. A couple are horses that i am the only person who ENJOYS handling them. They are all beautiful... but my life is one of dirt and grime and fly spray and most of the time i smell bad and am covered in horse hair. Yes i wear a special boot you can only find sold in england. Im on my feet all day i better have boots that are both comfy and safe. my jeans are dirty, my OD green Tshirts are dirty, my braid is dusty and i have leaves and hay in my hair most times. Most horsewomen have skin like leather and faces that are lined by the sun.
are there dressage queens and little princesses that hand off their horses to trainers and grooms and only ride and like to be seen at the hunt club or the shows? sure.
you will never have more fun than with cowhorse people. they are born morons. none are snowflakes. you cant be. those horses are worth some huge bucks. training for cowhorses is more expensive than dressage horses. you have to pay for the cows. its so competitive its its own sickness like addiction. we dont do it for conspicuous consumption, though, its because chasing cows is FUN, and winning is even FUNNER.
this is said by someone who has broken her back riding jumpers, had some of the nicest cowhorses you could sit on, and who now rehabilitates rare breed horses and Tennessee Walking Horses, who are show horses who suffer just about as much as a horse could for the sake for conspicuous consumption. there are all facets to the horsey lifestyle. Some is good some is bad. Some just is what it is.

Been feeling uneasy about the new job, and tonight realized why. Same as the old job, now with less intellectual freedom and more paperwork. Also, doesn't help me meet one of my overarching goals, which is to be able to work remotely so I can move out of this flaming hellhole of a valley.

I was never an English major and am not wedded to any particular theory, but the idea that the real author was someone who was intimately familiar with palace intrigue, as opposed to a common actor, makes sense to me.

No, unfortunately. I don't have access to the offices where the computers are. It's not a huge problem; the data was for a paper that I'm rewriting to submit as part of job applications. It's just annoying, because I wanted to finish the first draft tonight and spend a couple hours reviewing it on Monday. Instead, I'll probably not finish it until Wednesday.

I wish it was a next thing you know story, but more of a needless to say. I've been working weekends for the last month so I thought-why the hell not-blow off Wednesday and make the drive to the MGM Grand.
Beltway, rush hour ... GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!
Great show. Rise Against played a set, as did Three Trapped Tigers (an English pub band about to make it big here), and Thrice. I avoided the mosh pit because there was some real beef in there (one dude had to have been 300 pounds ... nfw was I going to get smashed up by that) ...
pretty good mix of their catalogue ... surprised they played Phantom Bride though.
Worth it.

I'm running a regression of wages against military service. The independent variables I'm using are AGE (in years), AGE^2, SEX (1 if female), RACE (1 if black), a set of dummies representing high school, associates, and bachelor's completion, and a set of dummies for length of service (6mo-2yrs, 2-3yrs, 3-4yrs, ..., 20+ yrs). The problem is that when I run my regressions, I keep running into the same error: "Near singular matrix error. Regressors may be perfectly collinear." I've narrowed it down to one specific term, "sex*yrsserv_7". I pull out that term, the regression is fine.
Normally that error message means that I've fallen into the Dummy Variable Trap, and removing one of the dummy variables, or the constant, will solve the problem. However, in this case both SEX and YRSSERV_7 are fine on their own. It's that specific interaction term that causes problems, and I don't know why.

684 Ok, I think I figured this out. I just built a new series test = SEX*YRSSERV_7 and it came out all zeros. I think that none of the observations in my data set are women who've served that length of time, so it's throwing an error. I'll just remove the term and run with the resulting regression.

It's been a while since I've done it, but you may want to try running a Partial Least Squares model on your data. Most statistical software packages offer that capability. It sounds though, on a perfunctory reading of this thread, that you discovered you have a misbehaving (i.e., insufficiently varying) predictor variable.
Of course, all really top-notch mathematical modellers know you must (must!) turn on the HSFF option (hockey stick fudge factor) to obtain a predictive model that adheres to "settled science"!
