Hollywood Blues: Worst Memorial Day for Box Office; Reviews Are Apparently to Blame

Before getting to that:

It should be noted that movies are only one aspect of Hollywood. When we say "Hollywood," we must also think of television, which is doing... well, I don't know it's doing. I do know all of The Elites spend hours and hours watching it because we're in a Golden Age or something.

Point is, theatrical production and exhibition is only one part of this industry.

That said, I have to note Steven Spielberg's seeming prescience.

Steven Spielberg on Wednesday predicted an "implosion" in the film industry is inevitable, whereby a half dozen or so $250 million movies flop at the box office and alter the industry forever. What comes next -- or even before then -- will be price variances at movie theaters, where "you're gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln." He also said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release.

George Lucas agreed that massive changes are afoot, including film exhibition morphing somewhat into a Broadway play model, whereby fewer movies are released, they stay in theaters for a year and ticket prices are much higher. His prediction prompted Spielberg to recall that his 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial stayed in theaters for a year and four months.

Yeah, I left in George Lucas' part because it's so obviously wrong.

The real movie side of Hollywood-- including theatrical distribution, not just PPV stuff -- is in trouble.

Here's the problem:

1. Television picture quality has advanced to the point where there is not really a big premium on seeing a movie at the theater. I used to always have to see the big spectacle movies on the big screen, but I don't any longer. For one thing, spectacle is now commonplace and CGI is often lame, and for another thing, there's really not that big of a difference between "The Big Screen" and a good-sized TV.

The big screen has the best theoretical resolution and sound, but how many times do you get to see a movie where the projector is perfectly focused and the sound is perfect? And you don't have idiots yapping next to you?

2. Because of the overseas market, and because Hollywood needs a reason to draw people into the theater instead of just waiting six months to watch it on demand on TV, Hollywood really can only make one kind of movie now. Gotta be big, gotta be splodey, gotta be something that can be plausibly claimed to be "better in 3D" or "mindblowing in Imax."

Don't get me wrong, I like a good popcorn movie with explosions, but when that's the only kind of movie you can make, the novelty of such a thing quickly diminishes, and you have to start making movies that are really third-tier material at best.

When's the last time you saw a big movie advertised that wasn't about superheroes or reboots of tv shows from the 60s to 80s?

Where are the detective movies? I only remember the Reacher films and The Nice Guys.

Where are the comedies? Fewer and fewer -- as with detective movies, comedy relies on dialogue, and that doesn't play well with foreign audiences. And even where there is a comedy, it's often a comedy-action-special-effects hybrid, like Ghostbusters, which gives not one but three different Failure Paths.

War movies? Well, you can't make a movie about our current wars, which are Bad, and even movies about World War Two have to be about something other than war. Saving Private Ryan was about the rescue of a single soldier, and Dunkirk -- which looks pretty good -- is about an evacuation/rescue/escape. Which is, yes, part of war obviously, but note that it's not about beating our enemies. It's about saving lives.

Same with Hacksaw Ridge. Yes, part of war (medics need love and haven't gotten enough), but we're running into the same problem where the number of things you can make a movie about are getting smaller and smaller. War is a spectacle and so should make for a movie -- except, you can only do war movies where This Time, The Mission is a Man.

How many of those can they do?

Horror remains a popular genre and we still get a lot of those (some pretty darned good!), but it's a niche genre that most people don't like.

Sure, there are exceptions here and there, but basically you have movies based on cartoons, or movies that are cartoons (children's fare), or attempts to turn a children's toy or game into some kind of Shard Universe. (Which GI Joe and the Micronauts are apparently doing -- there'll be some kind of Hasbro Toy Cinematic Universe. Maybe.)

Eh. I'm a fairly childish adult but even I can only take so much of childish things.

3. TV is, I keep being told, in a "Golden Age" where you have "actual stories you care about" or something, though when I see it, it always looks like a premise that could have been dealt with in a movie or six episode miniseries but gets padded out with all the same potboiler/soap opera twists and turns we've seen six thousand times so that they can make a full season of it.

Anyway, TV is more and more for anything that isn't about superheroes or aliens.

So the theatrical side of Hollywood finds itself in a fix similar to the one it faced in the 50s, when TV first became big.

Oh, and a lot of their movies are terrible and fall into the category of I Didn't Ask For This. That Great Wall movie with Matt Damon? Um... A movie about the Great Wall and the Mongol wars might have been interesting, but now it has to be about Giant Space Monsters or whatever.

Because Imax.

I've seen enough Giant Monsters From Space. Seriously.

Spectacle is too common and too easily achieved now to be spectacular. The most "spectacular" parts of movies are just CGI cartoons now and most could GAF -- and many people wonder, "Why not just have the hero and villain fight? Without all the super space explosions." Few have anything nice to say about Batman v. Superman, but many complain, rightly, that the garishly cartoonish fight at the end was the worst part of the movie.

I hear people are saying the same about the otherwise-well-reviewed Wonder Woman -- once again, the stuff they spend the most money on is the stuff that makes people wonder, "Why didn't they just have her kick the bad guy's ass for a bit?"

It's just boring now. When everything is a CGI Extravaganza, nothing is a CGI Extravaganza.

Anyway, the rash of failures is prompting some to complain that reviewers, who no one listens to anyway, are to blame for this.

But here's the thing:

No one wanted a Baywatch reboot. They estimated the Brand Value of the IP was high. They were wrong.

But they felt forced into Exploiting a Known IP because... I don't know. A movie without a pre-existing brand identity would be punted to Netflix or something.

No one wanted a Pirates of the Caribbean 5. In fact, no one wanted a Pirates of the Caribbean 3, and definitely not a 4. (We did want a Pirates of the Caribbean 2... until we saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2.)

Movies are largely about novelty, fellas. These things are not novel. Even the idea of doing a spoof of a bad, poorly-remembered TV show is old -- Brady Bunch did it. Starsky and Hutch did it. 21 Jump Street did it. Some of those movies are fun, but the idea of doing a silly spoof of a bad old TV show is old.

Clint Eastwood is doing a movie about those three Americans who thwarted the knife-and-gun attack on the Thalys train running from Brussels to Paris. I assume Hollywood only permitted this because they're all afraid of saying no to Clint Eastwood. And they fucking should be.

That's kind of new, just because it's so not of-the-moment. It's new because people don't do suspense movies with Problematic Overtones any more.

Tom Cruise's movies are like that too -- he's the only guy doing a particular kind of movie, where the late eighties never really died. Shooting and stunts and no giant space monsters (usually). Good bless him.

But everything else is so samey-samey.

And it kind of has to be. Anything else isn't a movie in today's climate -- it's something you pitch to a pay tv channel, and then pad it out until it's boring.

I don't know how they're going to solve this. In the 50s, Hollywood trotted out spectacles and introduced Panavision and Technicolor and stuff to differentiate theatrical pictures from TV fare, but spectacle is dead, and I can't think of any kind of technological innovation that would make seeing a movie on the screen a big must any more.

I don't even blame it on a lack of creativity (though, you know, some would be nice.) There are economic and social forces now arrayed against theatrical exhibition of films that I think are completely unstoppable.

LOL.

That's friggin retarded. Broadway shows do that because ... there's only ONE theater the show can be seen at.

15 There's some good stuff on Netflix and Amazon, but even that is hit or miss. I actually like the Netflix Marvel stuff because it's slower-paced, which I like. It allows for a little more character development. The Man In The High Castle is a good series, as well as Bosch. Both benefit from being able to tell longer stories than would be available in two hours.

But I love classical music. I used to have season tickets to the opera and symphony and also donated generously.

Now, no more. Not another ticket, not another dollar. I will never again set foot in a concert hall. Because the arts community has made clear the level of contempt they have for dull, bourgeois lumps like me who have paying jobs, go to work, pay my bills and try to live a normal life.

So, I can purchase and download (or even record online) a much greater variety of music than I can hear live. I might lose something, but it's a trade I'm willing to make. Sure, the musicians will get a pittance or nothing, but that's a feature, not a bug.

++++

It's tough to do a WWII movie because it's tough to make it interesting. Allies good, axis bad. What can you do with that? Hollywood loves to flip things and make you see the other side of the bad guys, but how are you going to do that with Nazis? The Imperial Japanese weren't much better. You just can't make them misunderstood. We understand them all too well.

The Americans and their allies have to be the good guys. But, that tale has been told and lots of times. You want to get people excited about seeing a new WWII movie, you have to figure out a fresh angle on it. Not easy to do. But then, I'm not making those big Hollywood screenwriter bucks.

57 Ace, there are two primary but mundane reasons why movies-in-theaters is a dying format:

"Pause" and "Rewind."

I stopped going to movie theaters 15 or more years ago, and the main reason was that, while at home, I could pause the film to take a leak, or rewind it to see the explosion again -- but in the theater that was not possible.

I began to realize -- a realization that by now has struck most people -- that seeing a movie in a theater is almost always LESS enjoyable than seeing it at home, because of "pause," "rewind," and also "couch," "pajamas," "beer," "bonus features" and "not having to smell the farts of the guy in front of you."

Home TV screens are ridiculously hi-res these days, too. So theaters to not have an advantage there either.

Sure, a small percentage of the population needs somewhere to "go out for a night on the town," but most don't anymore.

Having total idiosyncratic control over one's home viewing experience is what really killed the movie theater industry.

Seeing a movie in a theater with an audience is a sociological/cultural/psychological experience that you just cannot get at home unless you can replicate a theatre like setting with a fairly large screen. I think theaters are in essence here to stay, in that regard.

not as CGI free as claimed. Obvious big stuff, like the sandstorm with lightning and other big silly things.

The Mission Impossible 5 movie was mostly CGI-free. Pretty amazing. Best motorcycle chase I've ever seen.

Though what I think they did is filmed real motorcyles on real cliffside roads but then digitally added the traffic they were weaving around. But as that's a background kind of element, you don't notice that maybe that truck wasn't real.

PS I don't know that, I'm just speculating. I just think some of the high-speed stuff they did was insanely dangerous and I have to imagine there was some fakery involved.

I believe it is still true that several years ago Tom Cruise stopped taking a salary for movies and instead is a producer and takes a piece of gross points. He did an interview about it and said basically that he's made more than enough money for himself and his family and now if he does something he's got skin in the game. It also allows him to do Reacher and movies like that.

You mentioned about the Reacher movies I think that Cruise is a professional in the best sense of the term and I agree. He shows up, does his job and seems to remember that he is there to do something the audience will enjoy.

I hope that The Mummy is good because I would like to see the old monsters come back.

104 Hollywood is trapped between two forces that restrict subject matter and tone of every mass-market-intended production: Foreign market acceptance and US/Euro SJW acceptance. They can't make comedies like Blazing Saddles and Airplane! today. Offends too many SJW-supported victim groups. They can't have villains other than Caucasians in too many movies for risk of offending both the SJW and foreign crowds, but US Caucasians are tired of that game, one they know is being played.

A return to movies that we over age 45 or so remember is off the table, I believe, because the younger folks can't sit through slow-paced deep stories. That type of movie is rare these days, so how can they develop any appreciation for such material? IMHO.

107 Tom Cruise is actually a superb actor. probably one of the best actors of all time.

Is he a member of a crazy cult? Yes.

Is he ashamed of being a closeted homo? Yes.

Is he even more ashamed of being shorter than most of his leading ladies? Yes.

Does he have a creepy, weird personality in real life? Yes.

But all of that is irrelevant. I'm not watching a Tom Cruise movie to ponder the reality of the real Tom Cruise. I'm watching a Tom Cruise movie because I know that the lead character is going to utterly believable, emotionally intense, portrayed by an actor who is completely committed to his role to such a degree that you think he is the character on screen.

I forgive him his personal foibles, because his personal foibles have no impact at the skill with which he does his job.

Which is in part why the Star Trek franchise fucked up.

The audience already knows about the conflicts, and yet Simon Peg "Me" decided that another micro tale was a good idea. (further why didn't they follow up on Kirk's dad getting killed; it was the psychological basis but ignored the actual history .!~)(

Bad idea. We saw the Klingons, they hinted at the other races out there, and the blowing up of an entire civilization wasn't enough to even discuss intergalactic warfare?

Limited number of screens, and fierce competition for mass releases. And that leaves no room for smaller, indy pictures with actual stories and plots. So each film has bigger and bigger budgets with so much riding on them that directors are not permitted to take creative risks.

I saw "Das Boot" in the theater when it first came out, and it was riveting. You couldn't help but root for the poor guys in the boot. I mean, they weren't sending Jews to the camps themselves, but they didn't have a problem with it, if they ever thought about it.

You could make a decent WWI movie showing the lives of the soldiers in the trenches, without taking sides or making Profound Statements About the Futility of War.

Posted by: ace at May 31, 2017 08:48 PM

Agreed. To break out of potboiler A-B-C movies, you have to do something that is different, with a story you haven't seen before. Movies done with axis characters as the focus are possible, with the right story, but it has to be well done. There's a a ton of interesting stories to be told, that don't glorify anybody in WW2, or end up as "anti-war" flicks. Just fascinating WW2 stories... even about the germans, italians or japanese. Valkyrie was fantastic.

And the industry does this for as long as it works and just a little bit longer. Then they take a bath, and someone comes and makes a [movie about Y], and the cycle repeats.

190 That Wonder Women for Womyn showing thing is at Alamo Drafthouse, so I have to hate them now or something, but Alamo has lots of imitators and innovators in the Destination Theater space. Alamo has lots of kinda cool stuff in their pre-roll (that's what I am calling the stuff that plays before the previews - not commercials for Coca-Cola, but kind of a little art piece, snippets of movies related to the movie you are watching, and old commercials and stuff) and they do events (like the aforementioned WW for W thing) and they have Nerd Nights and they have decent food and drinks.

Because as ace notes, a big screen and loud sound system is available at home for a lot of people. (I have a 70 inch 4k and a nice 5.1 sound system and 4 kids - so first run movie for us is 75 bucks just to get in the door.)

Want me back? Try having some respect for those who buy tickets.

Major thumbs up for this post. I feel the same way about my local classical music station. Every time I feel tempted to support them so that classical music stays on the air, they go to an NPR "news" update that is just a collection of SJW teeth gnashings. Or an announcer has to explain to all us plebeians that the references to "alle Menschen" [all men] in Beethoven's 9th symphony is sexist or something. Or another announcer goes on a tangent about global warming when I just want to hear some Wagner. And then I decide that I don't give a $**t if the station goes belly up. I'll make do with CDs or whatever.

We know that your secret desire -- well, not so secret, actually -- is to be in the movie business or, failing that, to be a movie critic. Posted by: Hobby Models at May 31, 2017 09:21 PM (6Jdxv)

277 There are some really good ideas about why THINGS HAVE GONE WRONG with movies, so I will toss one of my pet ideas out there.

Money. They want to be sure to make money. So they do the predictable thing, and surprisingly, some of these big flicks BOMB. You know, if you were an expert in Game Theory mathematics, you could probably get into at least one studio and point out where their thinking is leading them to bankruptcy.

And my other pet theory is that old stories are remade to change the meta-message in the movie. That movie you saw as a child and loved has now been re-made with this hot young starlet, but the meta-message now is something twisted.

I remember this lousy movie I watched years ago on cable called "The Deep End of the Ocean", with Treat Williams, Michelle Pfeiffer and Whoopi Goldberg. Really stupid movie overall, but Whoopi played a Lesbian Law man. And I think that was the "meta" message. Let's get the proles to accept a lesbian law man.
Whatever.

This year there was a big deal about movies that were big in China but not here. I noticed that there were some that were produced there so that explains a lot - the new XXX film (Vin Diesle not porn) and also I think the new Resident Evil film. For the sake for men and father's lives 3. To help save Western Civilization to reform the family law system 4. Plus, you can make great money fighting for a truly honorable and righteous cause.

Not the article I'm looking for, but it gives some idea about the theatrical release. A huge issue with China is that since intellectual property law is . . . well, nonexistent, most Western movies are seen in pirated editions. That's what I read at some point a few years ago (perhaps not from a reputable source, admittedly). The Chinese apparently preferred pirated Phantom Menance pod-racing to pirated Empire Strikes Back.

not every film -- in a comedy, you may miss a line, and Flashback Two Seconds is a wonderful feature.

A lot of films just aren't particularly cinematic. Comedies, most of the time. None of that good stuff like "light reflecting off wet nighttime streets" or other good camera stuff.

Because I used to be a cinephile in this sense (i want the movie-movie experience), defects in the focus or film would piss me off, and I got pissed off a lot (lots of problems with projection), and I tended to not enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.

Now theaters are made better and stadium seating promises that there's (almost) not a bad seat in the house, and maybe projection control has gotten better, but still, it's not comfortable. I don't like being trapped by a sea of humanity when I want to pee.

327 The old elites used to scoff at television. Called it low brow and they were right. Remember Newton Minow called it a vast wasteland.

There were some good things in the beginning. Lucy, for example, which still holds up fairly well and is important because her and her husband basically invented the sitcom and how it was shot.

Probably the old elites didn't care for it because it appealed to the masses instead of showing someone drinking wine and sniffing their farts. Also it wasn't pushing the poz.

Breaking Bad I thought was very, very good but even there you have what Ace refers to above as soap opera (even if it was soap opera for guys). I strongly suspect it did so well because it showed a middle aged White Guy outsmarting all of his enemies. He starts out as that sort of cucky doofus Dad type we've all seen mocked endlessly in commercials and television and movies and then he metamorphoses into a crime kingpin who doesn't hesitate to murder his enemies.

That role plays so against how they want to present white guys these days that it's astonishing it ever got on the air. You can say well Tom Cruise or other action movie type heroes, but that has changed. Most of the newer action movies I've seen in the last few years always promote diversity and usually have a team of diverse peeps working together to overcome obstacles. It's blatant propaganda to prop up the current system.

334 Trailers and commercials. How movies are marketed matter, I think. I think sometimes the people selling the movie want to trick you to come in to make first week money because they think it won't have staying power.

The new Mummy movie is interesting, because it is theoretically a reboot so the commercials make it look like they are putting Cruise in to sub for Fraser. This seems like a silly idea.

But I saw a trailer for it when we saw GOTG2 and it was clear from that it was a Big Tom Cruise Movie and it only shares a name with the Brendan Fraser franchise.

The commercials don't give that impression at all.

343 Wonder Woman is receiving good reviews because:

1. The women need their Ghostbusters to finally succeed.

2. DC needs a hit -- if this movie tanks, the DC project is almost over, except for the Justice League (already shot) and maybe a Batman movie or two. But they already had batman.

I want DC to have a hit just to have some competition here. And because I don't like who owns Marvel, or the politics at the actual Marvel.

3. The other DC movies are so bad this one has a low bar to clear.

4. It might also be reasonably good, besides.

there a film in the last decade about Muslim terrorists taking over a
city? Bruce Willis as a general? I never saw it but if memory serves
Willis quickly becomes the villain because martial law and he's white or
something and that's what white guys always do because they love dicks
and guns or something.

I always point to "Oceans 11".

The original with the Rat Pack was kind of a fun little crime movie that the remake tried to capture.

The problem? The ending. In the original, only a portion of the money they stole ended up being kept, and that was for the widow and son of one of their crew. None of them got a penny. In the remake, of course they got the millions because George Clooney was a bigger star than Frank Sinatra or something.

He was almost Batman, losing to Adam West. He was a player on Carol Burnette, as well. There was one skit where Tim Conway made him lose it. Conway got a kick out of going off script and trying to crack the others up, Harvey Korman most notably.

Anyway, Wagonner was playing a captured American and Tim Conway was a Nazi interrogator. Ve have vays of making you talk. His was a little Hilter hand puppet, who used a pencil to beat Wagonner.

Wagonner lost it when Conway started singing "I've been working on the railroad" in the German accent.

411 >>not every film -- in a comedy, you may miss a line, and Flashback Two Seconds is a wonderful feature.

Yes, you won't be able to flash back. But also, you will laugh more when you're watching it on the big screen. I've personally gotten more laughs in theaters out of films I've seen on the little screen, including when that TV-viewing experience was recent. So, not only am I finding movies funnier on the big screen, I'm finding them funnier even if I just watched them on the little screen.

>>A lot of films just aren't particularly cinematic. Comedies, most of the time. None of that good stuff like "light reflecting off wet nighttime streets" or other good camera stuff.

I've been there, believe me. Wouldn't have expected it to matter nearly as much as it has in every single case.

There are many cases where one doesn't care because the movie just simply isn't good. Or not good enough to warrant a special viewing. But it's surprising how much a difference it can make, even on a not great film.

"The Goonies", for example, I didn't think was great. But it would've lost me completely on TV. I'm going to see "The Sandlot" later this summer not because I think it's going to be great but because, eh, if it's worth the two hours of my time, it's worth watching it for real.

>>Because I used to be a cinephile in this sense (i want the movie-movie experience), defects in the focus or film would piss me off, and I got pissed off a lot (lots of problems with projection), and I tended to not enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.

I didn't get a lot of that. Defects in the film didn't ever bother me that much. (I used to watch for the "cigarette burns".) Focus was annoying more than once. Even now, the theater's bluRay (or whatever) projector will just play the audio. But it's less than 1%.

>>Now theaters are made better and stadium seating promises that there's (almost) not a bad seat in the house, and maybe projection control has gotten better, but still, it's not comfortable. I don't like being trapped by a sea of humanity when I want to pee.

The Boy is diabetic (lotta pee breaks) so he likes to sit on the aisle. I can usually go two hours without peeing, if I haven't drunk a lot before.

But, hey, I admit I'm odd. I think there's a positive quality in going out to watch your video--even HAVING to go out--being amongst other people, etc. And I live in L.A. so I have literally scores of screens to choose from and lots of classic options.

412 I'm actually quite glad that Gal Gadot has now taken the place of Bar Refaeli as queen of the super-hot Israeli model-chicks.

Why?

Because bar Refaeli bragged about being a draft-dodger, refusing to do her mandatory military service, since she was "special" and not one the little people. Whereas Gal Gadot served for two years with pride, learning Krav Maga, how to fire a rifle, and how to kill terrorists.

Yeah, pretty hard to pirate movies in 1982.

Spielberg's cluelessness leads me to mention another possible reason why movies mostly suck now. No really creative directors (or screenwriters, for that matter). 70s and 80s Spielberg produced crowd pleasing movies, but thay also had themes and relatable characters. Heack, I recently rewatched "Back to the Future" (directed by Zemeckis but produced by Spielberg) and was shocked by the obvious product placement in a movie that is nonetheless as emotionally involving as a popcorn movie can hope to be. Spielberg hasn't really shown much creativity recently. A lot of his product is competent, but forgettable. And the people following in his footsteps like J. J. Abrams are just hacks with no interest in character or compelling storyline or anything. They're just versions of Michael Bey no one bothers to make fun of.

418 Went out to Hollywood a few years ago to sit with a group of producers, directors, and other Hollywood types to figure out how to fix Hollywood. The problem is really the business model. The theaters only get ticket revenue after the third week, by which time the movie has run its course. So the theaters raise the prices on everything, and add more and more stuff at the concession stand, add 3D and IMAX, and now it costs $50 to go to the movies. So the only movies worth that much are the big ones you want to see in the theater. So, they got to make them big, over the top big. And it kills the market for smaller films. How much money could be made by having reasonably priced romantic comedies, action/adventures, and family movies every week at the theater? They broke the business model. They can fix it.

she's almost always been a core member. Though, seriously, in the first incarnation (the Justice SOCIETY of America), they made her their... secretary.

Seriously. That happened.

But Wonder Woman has always been big in the JLA and is a good character. DC calls her part of the "Trinity" of Bats, Supes, and WW.

She's well depicted on the Justice League cartoon. Also, supremely hot. That cartoon was where I "Got it" that she was supposed to be a demigod.

Because, Hot.

427 343 Wonder Woman is receiving good reviews because:

Posted by: ace at May 31, 2017 09:35 PM (8rNrN)

Yeah I think it's a case that it is actually a decent movie and it's getting a big bump from critics because so many of them are sjw tools. One reviewer on YouTube made a contrast of it with Ghostbusters pointing out that Wonder Woman isn't spending the movie pointing out how awful he is for being a man.

434 The Justice League cartoon is often on Netflix and is really good. Everyone loved it -- why Zach Snyder didn't just take that as a jumping off point, but instead tried to re-make the Watchmen, I don't know.

The last season (called Justice League Unlimited) features a very cool running metaplot about Amanda Waller's attempt to build a superhero team to kill the Justice League, if it ever becomes necessary.

The interesting thing is that Waller is not depicted as crazy or evil, just prudent, and at least one Justice League member actually supports her initiative. Some interesting arguing between heroes.

So I don't really care if this Conan-like genetic superman is properly depicted on screen.

even that was a bit of a soft-sell -- the terrorist he claimed to want released, he didn't actually want relased (it was a ruse, as Archer would say), and that terrorist tried to convince David Suchet NOT to detonate the bomb.

Also, David Suchet's men were in the dark about Suchet's scheme as well -- they thought it was a common hijacking to force the release of a terrorist (or "political prisoner," whatever).

So really, David Suchet was the only real terrorist-terrorist in that movie, in the sense of wanting to kill lots and lots of people for no reason.

I've heard about season 3. I never wanted to watch it, because I usually don't like the teens, but then I saw clips of it, and it looked great. (The clips I saw featured the actual JLA member interacting with the Titans.)

So I might just push aside my prejudice against the Teen versions of the heroes, because man, it does (visually) look good. Even better than Justice League.

496 To properly appreciate Robin Olds whole life would require two movies, one set in WWII and one set in Viet Nam.

It would be possible to film the second movie because there is a flying F-4 Phantom in civilian hands. Along with a few MiG-21s. Don't think the Fresno or the Farmer has found any takers on the civil market.

Best guy to be the adviser for both movies passed away. Ed Rasimus helped write Olds' biography Fighter Pilot and did two combat tours in Viet Nam racking up 200+ missions in F-105Ds and F-4Es.

497 one thing that always made me NOT like DC when I was younger, and prefer marvel, was DC's weird and unbreakable habit of ALWAYS having some Teen analogue of a hero. I thought that was silly. They ALL have young dopplegangers?

plus, being younger, I didn't want to see KIDS. I wanted to see adults. Or, you know, people as old as Spider-Man, who was kind of an adult, at least when he had his costume on.

Marvel didn't do that. There was no Iron Boy, or Hulk Jr., or Little Thing, or Flaming Teen. When they had a "teen" group it was like the X-Men, who were there own thing, not young versions of established characters.

Anyway, that's why I was a Marvel kid when younger: I hated the DC Teens.

but I do hear a lot of adults saying how much they like the teen titans.

Not sure why they like them so much, as I never gave them a chance.

Yeah there is a decent amount of interaction between the Justice League and the sidekicks. And even though it is focused on the teens I think it's a bit more adult than even Justice League was. It's definitely not like Teen Titans was and not at all the abomination that is Teen Titans Go

500 Heh. I liked the "Teen Titans" cartoon. Ine of my kids won't watch "Teen Titans Go", not because it's not funny (it is) but because she doesn't want the original toon messed with.

The comic books were okay. Cartoon teens aren't a lot like real teens. They have jobs (fighting crime's a job!) and vehicles and no parents.

The original "Harlequin" was Joker's daughter, and she was a Teen Titan who fought against him. (That's pretty teen-y, I guess.) Also, I got the distinct impression she was black(ish), which might have been edgy (to someone).

502 I can tell you why I don't go to the movies: They cost s lot. Take both my daughters to the movies, it costs $10 for a bottle of water and a snack, then $15 x3 for tickets, that's over $50. I can wait six months and buy the DVD for $15, or wait a year and pay $10, or wait two years and check it out from the library (FREE). I'm at the tail end of the baby boom, I have two kids who both think they want to go to college, and I'd like to retire in 11 years. Probably a lot of other boomers are in the same boat.

503 By the way, the Lego Batman movie is really good. Probably second in my list of Batman movies after the Adam West 1966 movie.

I hated the West stuff as a kid but it's so much more fun than the brabrbarhahBATMANbrabra stuff, even when (like the Nolan flicks) it's done pretty well. (It may be my third overall superhero movie with the Donner Supes being the first two.)

Now that they've turned Bats into a psychopath, they needed a movie like Lego to point out that that's a really grim and dumb way to go through life.

507 Film could re-invent itself by working hand-in-glove with TV.

A big budget movie could be a helluva launch to a new TV series, look at the upcoming "Inhumans" for example. On the other side, imagine the draw if a popular TV series, such as "The Walking Dead", were to show its season finale for on the big screen first. That would work especially well to breathe extra life into a series that is starting to lose momentum.

If you cant beat them, join them.

509 The solution for Hollywood is simple. Make better movies.

In the last decade, how many great films have bombed at the box office? And how many pieces of garbage have made hundreds of millions of dollars? I think the latter is more common than the former.

It can be freakin' amazing to watch a good/great original film and then look at a remake made years or decades later and witness how much worse the filmmaking and storytelling is in the remake. My theory is that starting with music videos and getting worse with YouTube is that young filmmakers have grown up obsessed with getting THE moment or THE image or THE scene right, but have absolutely no clue how to connect those moments or images or scenes together to make an actual motion picture.

510 Mike, your solution relies on sophisticated movie consumers. That might be a problem.

511 Let's see... I can stay at home to see a movie and...

1. Pay significantly less than going to the rip off arena.
2. Pause the movie.
3. Take a whiz while said movie is paused. See #2.
4. Not have to listen to other people be noisy idiots.
5. Not have people crawl over me to whiz.
6. Make my own damn popcorn for significantly less. Plus, I can get the fancy chocolate swirl covered kind that the ripoff arena doesn't sell and you have to smuggle in like some drug dealer to enjoy it. Fuck them!
7. When I go whiz, I don't have to worry about the bathroom being occupied by weirdos that I'm not related to. And... the movie is paused at home...

Movie theaters on on the way out. Doesn't break my heart in the least.

513 The last movie I saw in the theater was "Blazing Saddles," last year in the Radio City Music Hall, with Mel Brooks doing a real funny QA right afterwards -- about a half-hour of nonstop wisecracks and hilarious anecdotes at New York speed that felt like a full hour.

When the movie started, the entire auditorium cheered: 5,000 fans. Boy, you just can't get that feeling sitting at home by yourself with your TV.

What has really killed the movie business is the commie wankers who are running it: There's no gut-wrenching Good versus Evil any more ("Everything's all the saaaame"), and all funny stuff, pretty much, is forbidden; OH! and there's no such thing as Man and Woman either, so that's right out, or has to have a homo sidebar "romance," etc., etc., etc.

Such wankers they are. Total buzzkills.

And the Chinese market? yeah, the idea that Every Single Movie has to play Everywhere is also killing the good stories. Which is idiotic because the world has Always loved American movies and our sense of heroes and villains -- people love that shit. But the commie wanker bean-counters can't see it.

Posted by: Beverly at June 01, 2017 01:27 AM (9Z6LD)

514 I must be one of those weird people who actually WANTS to go to a theater, and shell out the bucks to see a movie in a theater. That being said, I want to watch something worth my time. The last movie I saw in a theater: "Rogue One". Before that, "Spectre". Before that, "Star Wars VII". Before that, "Skyfall". And before that, Spiderman III". That's five movies in a theater in 10 years!

Time was when ones I wanted to see in a theater came out in waves. The summer of 2000 is a good example: a time when "Gladiator" and "X-Men" came out, among others. But those days are long gone.

Less CGI - or at least an economically deployed CGI - is not a bad thing. I want a good story, a decent premise, a decent plot, carried out by actors/actresses who can make it all believable. But Hollywood has not done that in ages. And I can't put that all on TV, either. For 30 years people have had the capability of setting up their own home theater systems, and such systems have only gotten better and cheaper. If this were all on the purported golden age of TV, part 2, the cracks should have been showing long ago.

Hollywood needs to get back to the basics of telling a good, compelling story. It's something they have abandoned for years now.

Posted by: CatchThirtyThr33 at June 01, 2017 02:26 AM (gzDHL)

515 Well they are not going to survive on filmhouse box office, because I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more than it costs to buy the Blue Ray, to see a film in a theater full of talkers, texters and brat-assed kids kicking my seat.
The electronics industry has spent a decade selling us all 'home theaters' and large high resolution screens.

the film industry would do better to broad release their films as PPV-streaming to any device for $10. Probably more people would pay to do that, than go to a theater.

Posted by: rayra at June 01, 2017 02:45 AM (Pgsaa)

516 The only good movies are ones that have a literary heritage. That means some schmuck has to sit down and write a compelling story that is translated into a visual medium. Hate on Moby Dick with Atticus Fitch playing Ahab but it is a good story some schmuck converted to a visual medium. Without the story it is a 90 minute nightmare.
Wait, let me rephrase that....

519 You mentioned about the Reacher movies I think that Cruise is a professional in the best sense of the term and I agree. He shows up, does his job and seems to remember that he is there to do something the audience will enjoy.

I hope that The Mummy is good because I would like to see the old monsters come back.

To my surprise, I really loved the first Reacher movie, and really liked the second one even though the ending was schmaltzy.

The Edge of Tomorrow is also very good. Huh. It just occurred to me that three of last four movies I've purchased star Tom Cruise.

But I've seen the previews for The Mummy, and they are a confusing mess. I hope the actual movie is better.

522 I don't go to the movies not so much because they are produced by left wing rubes, but because yeah, everything is splodey, 'spectacular' CGI crap with characters you don't care about.

The only exception I have seen is Guardians of the Galaxy. It was splodey and CGI crazy but it was funny and had character development. Other than that, when I seen yet another splodey CGI mess advertised, I run for cover.

Neflix original series is going to bring down the Hollywood movie buisness. There is stuff on there so much better than what you get at the movie theater. Great dramas such as bloodline, Stranger Things and so many others.

Posted by: jp at June 01, 2017 09:03 AM (ctXeH)

524 Yes it is all very depressing. There is an inertial stupidity at work. Hollywood is stuck on Big Stupid. I don't even blame 'em. I blame the zombie general public who would go see a movie featuring CGI hamster robots battling mutant dung beetles on Mars if it was marketed to them. You ought to add the depressing Star Wars and Star Trek features. And they will make them until this civilization collapses. Which of course may not be far off. And the less said about the Fast and Furious, the better.

529 Lurker here, but had to comment: I've seen two pretty good 'films' in the last 6 months. "Lion" and "The Red Turtle". Probably not for everyone but interesting, which is what it's all about for me.

Also, if Dirty Harry makes a movie about the train vigilantes I'll stand in line to see it.

Finally, Paladin above has a brilliant idea. Film it, sell it pay-per-view and make a fortune.
