Thank God for College: Feminist Researcher Proposes Bold New Science Mixing Quantum Mechanics and "Intersectional Feminism"

Anyone want to bet that the only thing this idiot even knows about quantum mechanics is that it involves probabilities along a spectrum and duality?

A feminist academic affiliated with the University of Arizona has invented a new theory of "intersectional quantum physics," and told the world about it in a journal published by Duke University Press.

Whitney Stark argues in support of 'combining intersectionality and quantum physicS" to better understand "marginalized people" and to create "safer spaces" for them, in the latest issue of The Minnesota Review.

Because traditional quantum physics theory has influenced humanity's understanding of the world, it has also helped lend credence to the ongoing regime of racism, sexism and classism that hurts minorities, Stark writes in "Assembled Bodies: Reconfiguring Quantum Identities."

Scientists believe this paper is composed entirely of the Stupid Quark.

Here's a bit of it:

Assembled Bodies
Reconfiguring Quantum Identities

Whitney Stark
Abstract

In this semimanifesto, I approach how understandings of quantum physics and cyborgian [???] bodies can (or always already do) ally with feminist anti-oppression practices long in use. The idea of the body (whether biological, social, or of work) is not stagnant, and new materialist feminisms help to recognize how multiple phenomena work together to behave in what can become legible at any given moment as a body. By utilizing the materiality of conceptions about connectivity often thought to be merely theoretical, by taking a critical look at the noncentralized and multiple movements of quantum physics, and by dehierarchizing the necessity of linear bodies through time, it becomes possible to reconfigure structures of value, longevity, and subjectivity in ways explicitly aligned with anti-oppression practices and identity politics. Combining intersectionality and quantum physics can provide for differing perspectives on organizing practices long used by marginalized people, for enabling apparatuses that allow for new possibilities of safer spaces, and for practices of accountability.

Over the weekend, a male conservative Twitter personality bought a ticket for the women-only screening of Wonder Woman at the Alamo Drafthouse in NYC. Actually, the screening was for people who "identify" as women.

There was a lot of, get this, hysterical emotional overreaction.

Oh, and "Charging Bull," a statue originally designed to stand by itself on Wall Street, is now opposed by, and negatively recast, by the parasitic sculpture "Fearless Girl." That statue now changes the meaning of his original work -- making the bull, which originally stood for daring and vigor, now stand for Penis-Based Oppression.

Another male artist is annoyed by this Cultural Appropriation.

So he's now erected (but of course he is, what an oppressor) a statue called "Pissing Pug" right next to Fearless Girl, urinating on her.

peepeepug.jpg

He says he deliberately made the new statue crappy because the new Fearless Girl statue is crappy too.

Correction: I was confused, thinking the new artist of this new "Pug" statue was the original artist of Charging Bull. He isn't, MWR tells me. I've rewritten the mistake out of the post.

Prank Warning: Commenters think the "cyborgian" paper on Quantum Intersectionality might be another prank paper.

Since the Dems want to remove statues of famous Confederates from everywhere and since they claim to hate Wall Street, why don't they put one or more of those Confederate leader statues next to the girl and the bull? 17 The pissing pug statue was really disappointing. It just llke like a lump. Not like a dog, much less a pissing dog.

Without being at least somewhat lifelike, it will have zero cultural impact. Which is a huge shame, because if it had been a masterful statue of a dog pissing on the girl, to scale, it would have been a fabulous symbol of society's new reality, i.e.

Conservatism is the new counter-culture.

quantum physics and cyborgian posthumanism (Haraway 1985), along with seemingly separated discussions of noncentralized leadership practices and anti-oppression organizing, subaltern studies, intersectional
identity politics, and safer space. Built into all of these understandings (bodies), I find, is recognition of shifting, difference, accountability, and connectivity; a structural similarity/movement/logically inherent (diffracting?) potential/alliance. A closeness (solidarity) not only linear.

You racist cracker.

None of that has to do with "quantum physics." Whitney here just wants to peddle her shtick in a new arena.

You could swap "quantum physics" out with anything and it remains just as silly - "preparing ham sandwiches," or "national parks," or "co-ed intramural soccer."

If you are a young female, and you're not afraid of jerks who will f**k you and beat you, you're stupid. If you are a young female, and you think oppression is some dude in an ivory tower, try telling that to your landlord when you are a month and a half behind on your rent.

Too many young females today are growing up thinking we're patriarching them, and they don't have a clue that toilet paper and auto repairs are not free.

And daddy, who you hate, isn't going to bail you out every time you run into a little problem, if you keep calling him a patriarchal oppressor.

Posted by: Lady in Black - Death to the Man Bun at May 30, 2017 01:26 PM (mQ0Mc)

163 See, what I find interesting is that the paper itself is not about teaching an intersectional feminist version of quantum physics, but rather about how Newtonian physics has affected society in such a way that categorizing of anything breaks down into hard and fast groups, rather than more granular ones. So black feminists are rolled up into the broader category of just "feminists."

I have no idea if she has the slightest idea what she's talking about with regards to Newtonian physics, quantum physics, or how any of that relates to social construction, but it COULD be an interesting thought experiment, if done properly. And by "done properly" I mean "written in such a way that it doesn't make people go 'Huh?' every five seconds, and also isn't meant to actually CHANGE anything, but just to give readers a different way of looking at something."

But gender studies papers are never about just looking at something from a different perspective. They are ALWAYS about changing people's behavior to fit the preferred narrative.

207 quantum bogodynamics: /kwon tm boh`goh di: nam iks/, n.
A theory that characterizes the universe in terms of bogon sources
(such as politicians, used-car salesmen, TV evangelists, and
suits in general), bogon sinks (such as taxpayers
and computers), and bogosity potential fields. Bogon absorption, of
course, causes human beings to behave mindlessly and machines to fail (and
may also cause both to emit secondary bogons); however, the precise
mechanics of the bogon-computron interaction are not yet understood and
remain to be elucidated. Quantum bogodynamics is most often invoked to
explain the sharp increase in hardware and software failures in the
presence of suits; the latter emit bogons, which the former absorb. See
bogon, computron,
suit, psyton.
Here is a representative QBD theory: The bogon is a boson (integral
spin, +1 or -1), and has zero rest mass. In this respect it is very much
like a photon. However, it has a much greater momentum, thus explaining
its destructive effect on computer electronics and human nervous systems.
The corollary to this is that bogons also have tremendous inertia, and
therefore a bogon beam is deflected only with great difficulty. When the
bogon encounters its antiparticle, the cluon, they mutually annihilate each
other, releasing magic smoke. Furthermore 1 Lenat = 1 mole (6.022E23) of
bogons (see microLenat).

We need Zombie Hemingway to kick some sense into these people.

Wrong.

274 The assignment of nothingness, lack, or absence as a demarcation of that which is not valued to receive care, that which is illegitimate or nonagential, is a strategy implemented by Western Cartesian oppressors in order to maintain a hierarchy privileging that which receives the assignment of presence (for instance, in Western colonialism, those occupying the spaces we now understand as Africa and parts of Asia were deemed by Europeans as not human, lacking culture, being anachronistic -that is, not present but in a liminal past opposed to European modernity - or even as the land being empty). Quantum physics discusses the assignment of absence/nonmatter to space 'between atoms' as exactly not that. For instance, it has been common for black holes to serve as a signifier for the ultimate void or lack. However, with quantum understandings, it is commonly accepted that black holes are spaces of radical potentiality; extra-materiality. Absence itself is not nothing; it is a pathologization of what is illegible for Western hegemony as absence (qualified as bad), illegible because it cannot understand, illegible to preserve its own privileging logic. It is a radical valuing of 'absence' that perhaps holds potentialities for difference.

An individual piece of creative material needs to be taken on its own. Comparisons to source material are unfair to the creative team of the new material.

If the two try the same thing in different ways, but the original succeeds while the new one fails, it's not because the original did it better. It's because the new one did something that didn't work. Just because the original material did it better does not make the new attempt either better or worse.

298 I think the impenetrable density of academic writing is simply to
disguise the inability of the authors to actually form sentences.

As in, they are all terrible writers. But somehow we have arrived at
the point that if you use enough large words and an interminable know
of dependant clauses, everyone gives up trying to actually parse the
sentence and assumes the author is Very Very Smart.

What irritates me is that part of peer review should be, IMO, basic readability. There are certain subjects that are simply impossible to write about in terms that a layman would understand, but when even members of your own field can't penetrate what the hell you're talking about in a journal article, it's time to go back to the wordsmithing table. I've known a few science and engineering types in my day, and most of them would tell you that when it comes to writing for an audience beyond themselves, they usually need help.

That was one of the more damning aspects of the Conceptual Penis article from last week; that the peer reviewers had not thrown out any red flags about the paper even though in several places it employed random gibberish taken from one of those online PoMo academic paper generators. Not only did they ignore the legitimate nonsense, they actually gave the whole paper glowing reviews! This is supposedly a paper in their field of study that included honest to God gibberish, and they didn't notice. So either they didn't read the paper at all, or they read it and didn't see anything wrong with it. In either case they should be stricken from any future peer reviews because they've proven their opinions about what is and isn't valid aren't worth a damn.

Our hero has an explicit rejoinder to that objection:

Theory is often conceived as inaccessible, thus for small, privileged audiences.
I agree vehemently with critiques of inaccessibility, banal depoliticization, and academic elitism. I also believe this inaccessibility critique can get employed in detrimental ways, denying tools created for anti-oppression struggles through elitist demarcation of 'the masses', nonacademics, people of differing abilities or perceived statuses as not able to access, understand, or use tools/language/strategies made to dismantle this kind of hierarchical assignment. I have seen how critical language, tools, and critiques are avoided in youth work (genealogically understood in 'the mass') by academically trained employees. Frantz Fanon ([1961] 1965) writes: 'The masses are quick to seize every shade of meaning and to learn all the tricks of the trade. . . . It has been decided to consider the masses as uninitiated . . . and leave them out of things . . . the much greater business of plunder'

Jackson's LOTR is his own fan fiction version of the story. Those who enjoy it are free to do so. I did at the time, more or less.

Post-Hobbit and after making an effort at rewatching, I think anyone would get three memorable scenes out of nine hours of finished film, given that cast and that budget. Jackson is not a talent, and fundamentally misunderstood his most important characters.

============

You missed my point.

It's not that the new one is bad because the old one was better. If the new one is bad, it needs to be bad on it's own terms.

If the new one does something different from the old one, that doesn't mean that it's bad. If the new one does something new that works just as well as something old in the old one, it doesn't make it either better or worse.

The problem is getting into the comparison between old and new.

New is new. Take it as it is and judge it based on its own merits, not the merits of an "original version".

The main reason I bought TOS is that I've realized how safe it is to have on the TV with my pre-teen kids around, and that it teaches useful lessons if they happen to sit long enough to actually watch it.

Plus $27. I got the Hitchcock collection for ten or so, too. I'm hoping they all ship.

These sciences, which were/are forcibly made to be considered truthful, valuable, universal, and objective, explicitly attack/ed (denigrate, primitivize, feminize)
matriarchal structures, forms of care valuing connectivities and interdependence (one explicitly relevant to quantum physics being witchcraft), kinds of bodies differing from the arbitrarily and subjectively decided norm (white, binary-male, considered physically able-bodied, heterosexual, etc.), practices of sodomy, nonbinary gender structures. They have established understandings of division, categorization,
proof, and health, and have been used to establish hierarchies of race, speciesism, and vitalism, which justified/y exploitation of people, animals, and nature. What using quantum understandings in this way lends itself to, I believe, is obstructing that whole game that was implemented explicitly for the purpose of white global exploitation through disidentifying in one of its own trusted buddies: science.

I love argument for argument sake as much as the next guy. However, "The problem of how you approach these movies is..." is kind of annoying.

Trying to get people to watch things or worse ENJOY things they do not enjoy is a fool's errand. Even better? Telling them that the reason they do not like it is a problem with them.

This is like telling Ace that the reason he does not like gay porn is because he is not approaching it in the right manner.

397 Everything is a rehash of something else.

Uh ... no. People who can't think of anything original like to say that to comfort themselves.

There are 26 plots.

LOL. I have to assume this is sarvastic.

Romeo and Juliet is a rip off of an earlier play. Hamlet is a hash of Danish history. Gone with the Wind did things differently from the book.

There is shockingly little true originality in the world. It's what happens after thousands of years and billions of people try their hands at telling stories.

If you're looking for only the absolute best of anything, then you're left with very little to enjoy.

No sooner was my uncle Toby satisfied which road the cannon-ball did not go, but he was insensibly led on, and resolved in his mind to enquire and find out which road the ball did go: For which purpose he was obliged to set off afresh with old Maltus, and studied him devoutly.—He proceeded next
to Gallileo and Torricellius, wherein, by certain geometrical rules, infallibly laid down, he found the precise path to be a PARABOLA,—or else an HYPERBOLA,—and that the parameter, or latus rectum, of the conic section of the said path,
was to the quantity and amplitude in a direct ratio, as the whole line to the sine of double the angle of incidence, form’d by the breech upon an horizontal plane;—and that the semiparameter,———–
stop! my dear uncle Toby,—stop!—go not one foot further into this thorny and bewilder’d track,—intricate are the steps! intricate are the mases of this labyrinth! intricate are the troubles which the pursuit of this bewitching phantom, KNOWLEDGE, will bring upon thee.—O my uncle! fly - - fly - - fly from it as from a serpent.—Is it fit, good-natur’d
man! thou should’st sit up, with the wound upon thy groin, whole nights baking thy blood with hectic watchings?—Alas! ’twill exasperate thy symptoms,—check thy perspirations,— evaporate thy spirits,—waste thy animal strength,—dry up thy radical moisture,—bring thee into a costive habit of body, impair thy health,—and hasten all the infirmities of thy old age.—O my uncle! my uncle Toby.

I would submit that a film that takes a popular book and totally changes damn near everything is already flirting with being a bad film, regardless of the quality, because a significant portion of the audience is expecting the film to at least nominally follow the plot of the original book.

Criticism isn't just a matter of making the case for a film being good or bad filmmaking. It's also a way for the audience to get a hopefully trusted opinion on the question "Will I enjoy this film?" before spending their money. And for a fair number of people in the audience, loyalty to the source is going to be a criteria for answering that question. So yes, it's a valid tool.

Understatement of the year.
I think Enterprise had the most potential of any Trek offering - TV or movie-wise - since DS9, but they squandered it. Instead of pursuing new ideas, they reverted to using the same themes and even enemies as later series. They fought THE BORG, ffs. THE BORG!

When you look at the talented actors and the characters they played - Trip Tucker was awesome and I will FIGHT YOU if you disagree, and Ian Malcolm was my pre-TOS boyfriend - it really is a shame how the show creators wasted all that potential.

441 I think the way Pike was killed was far worse than the fact that he was. An emergency meeting of senior officers takes place in and exposed and defenseless room with a giant window. Not a single writer was capable of voicing an objection that just maybe the top brass would have a fortified bunker for emergency meetings?

The problem with the Star Trek reboots where that they were packed to the gills with the same superficial references meant to trigger nostalgia for casual fans as the new Star Wars, while also having some of the most ridiculous writing in the franchise's history.

Action sequences were inserted for no reason other than "it'll look cool" ignoring the the technology inherent in the universe that completely negates the need for the sequence
(diving into a volcano rather than dropping the item from space or using a transporter or even just from altitude, etc). New technology introduced that destroys the entire premise of the series in its capabilities, but the implications of the new technology are ignored (transporter capable of instantly crossing most of the galaxy, removing almost any need to starships).

There was zero thought put into any of the scripts. Even when the TNG movies turned into bad action movies they still tried to anchor them in what was plausible for the universe they existed in. The Star Trek reboots were much more about taking some of the look and feel and slapping that on top of some generic action. But look over there! A tribble! Ohh and a Klingon! You're watching Star Trek!

447 441 I think the way Pike was killed was far worse than the fact that he was.

I was only sort of defending the decision to kill Pike.

I'm not a huge fan of Into Darkness. I think killing Pike sort of works, though.

The practical elements, right, don't really make sense. But that's a problem with the fact that the new stuff wasn't good. Not because it was different from the original.

So, if it happens, it's decades away after Christopher bites the dust and the estate is in desperate needs of money.

I think you can agree that Jackson has a tendency to at least... bloat Tolkien's work (although this is primarily in the Hobbit which took a novel and stretched to make it three films.)

Can you image what he would do with the Silmarillion?

Compared to the book, I think LOTR is relatively streamlined by comparison in movie form.

But yeah, The Hobbit went way overboard, and I don't entirely blame Jackson for that. He was set to make two movies, and seven months before the first one was released, the studio told him to make it three. There's where a lot of that bloat comes from.

And the problem is that Jackson, in that 3 movie undertaking of The Hobbit, had so much distraction playing around that he lost the core of the story. It's all there, but there's also 4-5 hours of extra stuff clogging up the eye holes.

460 334 If math wasn't hard (and it hadn't driven me to drinking, a problem all its own), it wouldn't have taken me six and a half years and dropping out two semesters to finish my goddamned BA.

I can write military history like John fucking Keegan, give me a quadratic equation set and I want to put a gun in my mouth.
My problem was the opposite of yours.
Math, algebra anyway, was no big deal for me. Writing, OTOH was like performing an appendectomy on myself. Back in the dark ages when I was in college, only nerdlingers used a computer and laptops did not even exist. When we wrote it was in frikken longhand and on the spot. Not good for a non-medicated ADHD sufferer. Being able to edit on the fly and type faster than I could ever write makes a huge difference.

462 Re: 'Good/Bad Movie' and' original source stuff -

For me the argument is marketing and fraud. When a movie is advertised as a visual recreation of a favored book or other source it should stay reasonably true to the source. If the producers of the movie are going to throw out 90% of the source then it should be marketed as '... as rewritten/reimagined by".

After one has paid an extortionate sum in expectation that a favorite and familiar book will be presented with integrity - and the movie slaps him/her in the face with a Lucy-football gotcha' anger ensues and all thought of good/bad evaporates.

Example: 'Starship Troopers' (The Book) has 'Dizzy' a mere MALE spear carrier who appears only to die in the first 10 or so pages. The movie turns this character female and Central to the plot. I call BS and fraud. I walked out 15 minutes into the movie and was laughed at when I asked for my money back. Caveat Emptor indeed!
