Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread 05-27-2017

Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry playing chess in Fry's rooms at Cambridge, 1980

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, for the 'ettes, I try to pick out a few lovely, conservative dresses to ooh and ooh over. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Problem 1 - White To Play (209)

Problem 2 - Black To Play (191)

There are two paths to victory here. Find both.

Hint: Black mates in 2

Problem 3 - White To Play (485)

6...Bg4? was a crappy move for Black. White has just responded 7.Nxe5. Black's choices seem to be either 7...Bxd1 or 7...dxe5. How will White proceed in each case?

Hint: Eat queen, lose game; eat knight, lose queen

Endgame of the Week (Endgame 50823)

This is kind of a toughie, so the hint is fairly extensive. It's White to play.

Hint: If it were Black's move, he would move Rc4 and then pick off the pawn next move to secure the draw. White has two choices to prevent this, but only one is correct. Once the correct choice is made, White must proceed carefully, with the knowledge that there are some stalemate opportunities that Black can use to attempt to force the draw.

Saturday Dress Pr0n

Here is a screen-shot I grabbed of actress Yvonne Strahovski as "Serena Joy" in the Hulu TV series The Handmaid's Tale. Mrs. Muse helped me add the right amount of light and color to the original picture so the dress can be seen better. In my opinion, it's a bit severe for a formal evening dress, but it is well in keeping with the tenor of the series. Perhaps a string of pearls around her neck would be a nice touch.

Also, Ms. Strahovski actually has a delightful smile, but in this role, she doesn't get many opportunities to show it.

Now here's some old-school beauty:

20170528 dress pr0n 36.jpg

Don't know where the first one is from, the the second is a publicity still from the movie Roman Holiday (1953).

I could probably fill up the dress pr0n section every week with shots of Audrey Hepburn. She is truly a classic beauty.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170527 - Problem 1.jpg
r3k3/4bR2/pp2P1p1/2pp2qp/3Pp3/4P1P1/PP1B3P/5QK1 w q - 0 1

1.Rf8+ Bxf8
2.Qf7+ Kd8
3.Qd7#

From Damiano vs. SHC (some hapless cretin), 1512. It probably wasn't from an actual game. More likely, it was a study or a theoretical position he discovered.

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20170527 - Problem 2.jpg
4k3/5p2/p3p1p1/1p2P2r/5P2/P1N5/1Pr2qQP/4R1RK b - - 0 1

1...Rxh2+
2.Qxh2 Qxh2#

That's the first path. Or, White could make the initial capture with his king.

2.Kxh2 Qh4#

And that's the second.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170527 - Problem 3.jpg
rn1qkb1r/ppp2ppp/3p4/4N3/2B3b1/2P5/PPP2PPP/R1BQ1RK1 b kq - 0 7
After 7.Nxe5

7.Nxe5 Bxd1
8.Bxf7+ Ke7
9.Bg5#

Which is a little reminiscent of Légal's mate

But taking the queen isn't forced. Black could always try to take the knight.

7...dxe5
8.Bxf7+ Ke7

Or if 8...Kxf7, then 9.Qxd8

9.Bg5+ Kxf7
10.Qxd8

And White has won the queen.

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170527 - Problem 4.jpg
rnb3kr/ppp2ppp/1b6/3q4/3pN3/Q4N2/PPP2KPP/R1B1R3 w - - 0 1

1.Nf6+ gxf6
2.Qf8+ Kxf8
3.Bh6+ Kg8
4.Re8#

Endgame of the Week

20170527 - Endgame.jpg
2B5/2P5/8/8/1r6/8/8/k2K4 w - - 0 1

So, in order to stop 1...Rc4, White has two options, Ba6 or Be6. The latter leads to failure:

1.Be6? Rb1+
2.Kd2 Rc1
3.Kxc1

Forced, otherwise Rxc7 draw. Only now it's stalemate because the bishop on e6 cuts off the Black king's only escape square. White needs to be constantly on the lookout against these sorts of stalemate threats. This line, by the way, is the reason why 1.Be6 is the wrong move.

The correct move is

1. Ba6!

1...Rd4+

Black wants 2.Kc1 Rc4+ 3.Bxc4 (forced) stalemate. Or 2.Ke1 followed by 2...Re4+ etc. perpetual. White can derail that train with:

2.Bd3 Rxd3+
3.Kc2 Rd4

Another stalemate trap. If now 4.c8=Q then Rc4+ 5.Qxc4 stalemate.

So the solution is to underpromote

4.c8=R Ra4

To guard against Ra8#

5.Kb3 and wins

White threatens both Rc1# and Kxa4 and Black cannot defend against both.

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

13 YAY THE GAME THREAD OMG OMG YAY

And do we have some drama for you this week:

First off, Far Cry 5... yeah. Moooving right along...

Then there's that mess over Wargaming's "World Of Tanks", which started last week, but I'd missed it. They put out a free-to-play game funded by microtransactions. And then they sold a superweapon tank which you had to supply with paid ammo. One of their premium players - apparently they give perks to certain of their players with the understanding they won't talk too much trash about the game - went rogue and said "fuck this game in particular" (possible moron!).

And then Wargaming threatened to shut him down using the DMCA copyright tools to do it. This is, of course, an abuse of the DMCA and my god, the shitstorm that ensued. Jim Sterling got involved, and then so did The Know, and eventually Wargaming had to eat a crow the size of a large buzzard.

17 Look how young Fry and Laurie look. Yikes.

The dresses are lovely, OMuse - thank you! Yes, I agree that the dark green one is a little severe. It needs some bling to dress it up, maybe.

Audrey Hepburn could wear Michelle O's clothes and still look elegant, but I much prefer her in her own clothes. Edith Head sure knew how to dress her for her movies.

Thank you for spoiling us 'ettes, OMuse. Good stuff. I'll bet Mrs. Muse enjoys looking for these with you.

Everyone forgot that Jedi Knight was actually a sequel (to Dark Forces) after it came out, and wowed the gaming world, so its sequel was Jedi Knight 2 rather than DF3. I guess something similar happened with RD3 / RDR2.

26 I'm reading a Kindle sample of The Allure of Battle.

Interesting take: That generals and kings have for 300 years plus had a hard-on chasing that will o' the wisp of the Genius Commander winning the quick, sharp set-piece battle that clinched the war decidedly, when in reality wars have been won unglamorously with sieges and trenches against fortresses and other battlements through attrition. The relatively quick wars of German Unification were the proverbial exceptions that proved the rule, and only served to delude German war planners as the twentieth century began.

One battle that may take some Morons aback as overblown was Tours, apparently given excessive significance by idolaters of the Big Battle like Creasy, which was more a defeat of forward scouts than a clash of great armies. In the I Shit You Not category, the author adds that Hitler ascribed great importance to Tours as well, and he lamented that the Muslims lost, arguing that the glories of the Germans would have been greater under Islam. [Well, I guess Frau Merkel will give us the counterfactual, won't she?]

I knew Hitler liked the Mohammedans, but damn. To quote the philosopher Jim Lahey, birds of a shitfeather flock together.

Thus endeth the long history comment.

After facing a backlash for pulling advertisements from Fox News’ host Sean Hannity’s show, USAA will no longer run ads on liberal MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s show.

The insurance company originally claimed that it would no longer run ads on “Hannity” because of a company policy against airing ads on “opinion shows.” The Media Research Center then revealed that the company had placed ads on MSNBC shows hosted by Maddow, Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell, all of whom present the news from a liberal viewpoint.

USAA told ABC News that it aired ads on the three shows by accident, and will take steps to ensure that that doesn’t happen again in the future. That announcement followed USAA members flooding the company’s Facebook page with angry comments. Many commenters said they would take their business elsewhere in retaliation for MSNBC pulling the ads.

68 IIRC, Charles Martel's forces had shields that would hook together. They could stand there and not break the line of defense.

Where is MPPP with two stories. 1: The time William Holden comes in and finds Audrey Hepburn and Ciccolina in bed and 2: the time Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti "dine" with Audrey Hepburn in Switzerland.

84 BTH, yes and no: Boyaca was the result of an insane forced march up the Andes by Bolivar and his Venezuelan army against Spanish forces holding Bogota. It was everything that a sharp set piece battle to settle things was supposed to be.

After that, it was only in Bolivar and Gran Colombian forces' hands to loose the war, it was never in the Spanish force's hands to win. (and my goodness, the Gran Colombians tried at times)

You could say the same thing about San Martin at Chacabuco, though part of that was O'Higgins realizing while moving forward he was half way down the Spanish' throat and deciding to jump all the way in and kick his way out - and the rest of the army supporting that move.

Bolivar won battles by being where it was impossible to be through forced marches and inherent toughness of his troops, San Martin won battles by muddying the waters and having sufficient material on hand to be where it was considered impossible to arrive be in such numbers while the Spanish were spread out looking everywhere else.

110 One battle that may take some Morons aback as overblown was Tours, apparently given excessive significance by idolaters of the Big Battle like Creasy, which was more a defeat of forward scouts than a clash of great armies.

The original source for Tours is a rather uninformative passage of about two sentences in a chronicle. There has been an amazing number of interpretations built on those two sentences...

The notion that it only was a defeat of scouts has been challenged, BTW. I don't know how they could determine that from the Frankish source, so it has to rely on the silence of Andalusian sources.

logprof : another example of a battle not deciding nearly as much as people think it did was the Spanish Armada fail in 1588. Yay, the English won. That engagement. Right after that the Spanish beat the English all over the Atlantic and, a decade or so later, forced a treaty down our throats.

They failed to conquer England, that was what was decisive. Had the Armada succeeded in transporting Parma's army to England, he very probably would have deposed Elizabeth and reimposed Catholicism on England, England would probably not have colonized NA to the extent that they did or in the manner in which they did (compare and contrast French Canada with the English colonies), and thus no US.

Yes, it was very decisive in the long run.

124 I had a book once, "What If... 2", which discussed what if Philip II had landed troops in England.

His answer is that the Queen might have held the hills around Devon and Staffordshire, and the swamps of East Anglia, leaving the Spaniards with London and not much else. Philip could have done damage to England's richest farmlands, but couldn't have forced Catholicism back on it.

One thing that's not talked about much is, what if Philip had just annexed Ireland and booted all the English and Norman-Irish out. That, I think he could have done more easily.

I don't think it's hamhanded. The eeevil Christian theocracy in this rendition is actually not shoved in the audience's face all that much. What they do show of it, i.e. a lesbian being hung by her neck from some construction equipment, and another woman who gets her clitoris removed, makes it look more like this is a thinly-viewed parable of an Islamic theocracy.

And this is a surprise to me because the author of the novel is an unhinged moonbat.

144 --A lot of the destruction of the Armada was going the long way around Great Britain through the stormy North Sea.

Even on the eve of seeing off the Armada, Carlos V knew he was rolling the iron dice.

Yeah, but the victory was won when the Armada was forced past the point where they could have turned around and rendezvoused with Parma. The campaign was lost at that point.

I don't think that it was actually a winnable campaign, unless the English had remained in port. The navigational and logistical problems were too enormous for the Spanish military system to overcome otherwise. Nevertheless, it did represent a significant setback.

Philip II, not Carlos, BTW.

England had no real army at the time, and what small number of experienced fighters it had at the time where still engaged in the Netherlands, I believe. (The continued support of the rebellious Dutch - another consequence of not having a Spanish army to deal with at home).

Yeah, I get that the Armada didn't make England's rise to Empire inevitable. I don't buy the notion that it wasn't a significant factor in the long run, though.

150 A lot of Gregg Allman love, need more Jim Bunning love (from Wiki):

Bunning played in Minor League Baseball from 1950 through 1954 and part of the 1955 season, when the Tigers club described him as having "an excellent curve ball, a confusing delivery and a sneaky fast ball".[6] His first game in the major leagues was on July 20, 1955, with the Detroit Tigers. Bunning pitched his first no-hitter on July 20, 1958, for the Detroit Tigers against the Boston Red Sox.[2] On August 2, 1959, Bunning struck out three batters on nine pitches in the ninth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Bunning became the fifth American League pitcher and the 10th pitcher in Major League history to accomplish the nine-pitch/three-strikeout half-inning.

203 More:

Bunning entered play on June 21 with a 6-2 record on the season.[8] He was opposed on the mound by Tracy Stallard in the first game of a doubleheader. Through the first four innings, Bunning totaled four strikeouts through twelve batters. In the fifth inning, Phillies second baseman Tony Taylor preserved the perfect game with his strong defensive play. A diving catch and a throw from the knees kept Mets catcher Jesse Gonder off the bases. Bunning also had a good day at the plate, hitting a double and driving in two runs in the sixth inning. By the end of the game, even the Mets fans were cheering Bunning's effort; he had reached a three-ball count on only two batters, and retired shortstop Charley Smith on a pop-out, and pinch-hitters George Altman and John Stephenson on strikeouts, to complete the perfect game.

Bunning, who at the time had seven children, said that his game, pitched on Father's Day, could not have come at a more appropriate time. He remarked that his slider was his best pitch, "'just like the no-hitter I pitched for Detroit six years ago'", Bunning posted the first regular-season perfect game since Charlie Robertson in 1922 (Don Larsen's perfect game was in the 1956 World Series). The Phillies also won the second game of the doubleheader, 8-2, behind Rick Wise, who earned his first major league victory in his first start.

Bunning's perfect game was the first thrown by a National League pitcher in 84 years. It was also the first no-hitter by a Phillies pitcher since Johnny Lush no-hit the Brooklyn Superbas on May 1, 1906. He is one of only seven pitchers to throw both a perfect game and an additional no-hitter, the others being Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Addie Joss, Cy Young, Mark Buehrle, and fellow Phillie Roy Halladay, whose additional no-hitter came in Game 1 of the 2010 National League Division Series. He was also the first of only five players to throw a no-hitter in both leagues, the others being Young, Johnson, Nolan Ryan and Hideo Nomo.

211 OrgeonMuse, as for the endgame (final problem), if white "blunders" by going Be6 (preventing the rook from going to the c-file), which "allows" Rb8!!, such that if white takes the rook and promotes to a queen (or even to a white rook), which stalemates black -- white actually can still win with either cxb8/N! or cxb8/B!, and then he can mate with the two minor pieces.

I know that Ba6 is "better" and the "right" move, but Be6 works as well. At least I think so.

How is there not a single Democrat in Congress right now with a "tie" to Russia in some way or form?

Of course there is!

So the better question is: Why aren't the Republican Shits exposing him/her/them?

Because the GOP turds are trying to run with the Trump/Russia bullshit that their buddies, the Dems, made up out of whole cloth. Remember, these are the same GOP turds who wanted to kill the Tea Party but were happy to let the criminal, violent, rapey Occupoopers get away with everything.

1.Be6 Rb1+
2.Kd2 Rc1

If white takes the rook, black can't make another move... stalemate. If white doesn't take the rook, the rook takes the pawn. White no longer has sufficient material. Be6 won't work.

--That was a treat to read. Amazing how close Bunning was early in his career to washing out of baseball.

This passage grabbed me:

By 2009 Bunning had lost the support of the powerful Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, effectively ending his political career. In March he apologized for a morbid remark he had made, saying he believed Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg, "could die within a year from pancreatic cancer."

--It's a cruel irony that the lilith zombie Ginsberg has outlived a great man like Bunning.

Posted by: logprof at May 27, 2017 07:24 PM (GsAUU)

237 Agree that black can force a draw with 1. ... Rb2+ after 1. Be6, either by stalemate or capturing the c-pawn.

After Ba6, 1. ...Rb2+ doesn't accomplish anything because there is no immediate stalemate threat as the a2 is no longer under attack by white's bishop.

1. ...Rd4+ is the alternative, in which case white must move 2. Bd3 to hold the position, followed by 2. ...Rxd3+, Ke2 and black cannot prevent the pawn from queening. (2. ...Rc4 accomplishes nothing either.)

If white moves his king to c1 or c2 on move 2, black will force a draw with 2. ... Rc4 by stalemate or by capturing the c-pawn.

If white moves his king to e1 or e2 on move 2, then 2. ...Re4+ allows 3. ...Re8 and a draw

Which is why 1. ...Rc4+ does not work after Be6, because after 2. Ke2 2. Re4+, white's bishop is blocking the e-file, preventing 3. ...Re8.

238 Ah, now I see the solution to the endgame, which OM just posted! That actually is a legendary theme, in this position boiled down to its essence. Verrrry sneaky!

240 1...Rxh2+
2.Qxh2 Qxh2#

That's the first path. Or, White could make the initial capture with his king.

2.Kxh2 Qh4#

And that's the second.

That's not "2 solutions". That's one solution with an alternate fork. I gave you two actual solutions.

... Qf3

insures mate. If white Queen takes, then Rxh2#
If white doesn't take then black rook takes white queen and mate is close.

Two solutions. A different solution calls for a different first move. If they are two paths from the same first move then it's still only one solution.

241 And ... I don't bother reading descriptions for these things. In problem 3 you wrote: "White To Play". It's not until I went back and read all the junk about the problem that I see that it was NOT "White To Play".

The stories about the boards are nice for people who like that sort of stuff but all I look for is the board and who is "to play".

The chess thread gets posted every Sat. approx. 5pm Eastern time, no later than 5:15. I've been pretty good at keeping this schedule.

244 Since I usually take my nap right after I read the first problem every Saturday, because I don't have a chance in hell of figuring it out, I missed all of the Audrey stuff this time, since I don't even bother to scroll down to the adult questions. It's not my fault that my wiring is all set in the attack position. Anyhow, she, Audrey, is too cool to look at anyhow. Great Chess Thread, again. As usual. And, yeah, I think that Audrey should become the official mascot of the Chess Thread!
