And they really are. I don't know how they do it, but over time my kids' public schooled peers are becoming part of a hivemind. It's really disconcerting because it has nothing to do with basic intelligence or ability.

Several years ago the president of the UK's Planned Parenthood-like abortion org came out **in favor of sex-selective abortion** - because it is already very common over there (probably here, too).

Makes sense when you consider that to concede abortion is wrong in one instance is to open yourselves up for negotiating other cases where it is unethical/wrong. So, like their PP sisters, they are 100% for abortion, full stop.

I had to explain what happens when countries allow abortion on demand. It led to a discussion of how some countries limit ultrasounds and how countries like the US have "tourists" who come for sex-determining ultrasounds and then can have very late-term abortions.
One them asked, "How sick do you have to be to look at your child and decide to kill her?" A lot of them said it was unethical, so I explained about Utilitarianism. They were shocked when I said that an Ivy League "medical ethicist" named Dr. Singer has opined that it's ethical to 'abort' a child up to two years old if the parents discover a birth defect or other problem.The class had just watched a documentary a day earlier about abandoned children in Peru who had birth defects and sometimes physical handicaps due to maltreatment. Some of them got teary-eyed because the children were such loving, happy children despite their circumstances. So they were making the connections between those children and the idea of "useless" people.
Please keep in mind that this is a public school. I know that if they took offense and told their parents, I'd have my head ripped off. But most likely not. Except for my students from Christian families or those with adopted children, my students have never heard about these issues from their parents. The default mode seems to be NOT to talk about it. In fact, I think most of the teenagers are taking cues from their peers and not adults.
