Declassified Memos Show FBI Illegally Shared Spy Data With Third Parties Who Had No Legal Right to Have It
The FBI has illegally shared raw intelligence about Americans with unauthorized third parties and violated other constitutional privacy protections, according to newly declassified government documents that undercut the bureau's public assurances about how carefully it handles warrantless spy data to avoid abuses or leaks. In his final congressional testimony before he was fired by President Trump this month, then-FBI Director James Comey unequivocally told lawmakers his agency used sensitive espionage data gathered about Americans without a warrant only when it was "lawfully collected, carefully overseen and checked." Once-top secret U.S. intelligence community memos reviewed by Circa tell a different story, citing instances of "disregard" for rules, inadequate training and "deficient" oversight and even one case of deliberately sharing spy data with a forbidden party. ... The court also opined aloud that it fears the violations are more extensive than already disclosed.... The court isn't the only oversight body to disclose recent concerns that the FBI's voluntary system for policing its behavior and self-disclosing mistakes hasn't been working. ... The FBI's very first compliance report in 2009 declared it had not found any instances in which agents accessed NSA intercepts supposedly gathered overseas about an American who in fact was on U.S. soil. But the IG said it reviewed the same data and easily found evidence that the FBI accessed NSA data gathered on a person who likely was in the United States, making it illegal to review without a warrant.... The court thanked Jeffress for her thoughtful analysis but ultimately rejected her recommendation to impose on the FBI a requirement of creating a written justification why each search would help pursue a national security or criminal matter.
The Justice Department argued in that matter that the extra restriction would keep FBI agents from connecting the dots in terror cases and compared NSA searches to something Americans do every day.
"If we require our agents to write a full justification every time think about if you wrote a full justification every time you used Google. Among other things, you would use Google a lot less," a lawyer told the court.
Yes. That's kind of the fricking point. When we're talking about 4th Amendment issues, the onus should be on the person wanting to query the data to describe why it's necessary. If there's not a pressing enough purpose for it that warrants a thorough written explanation, well, tough schnikes, buddy. Come back when you've got more evidence.

You know...I watched a comspiracy-ish video recently that theorized the reason we see so many pedos and other perverts in positions of power - government, Hollywood, etc - is not by coincidence but by design. As are all the other astounding violations of classification laws we have been seeing (presidential phone conversations with foreign heads of state routinely leaked to the public? WTFF?).
But .... it's not a serious country, or one in which a working majority even have the values or mindset that made the country what it was, historically.
Just watch. See what happens. Comparatively minor s**t in the 60s/70s was the End of the Universe, and treated as such (the Church committee, etc.). The entire structure of congressional oversight was created in reaction to these problems.
Lessee what concrete, meaningful steps are taken in response to this. As well as seeing how many people do jail time (to echo many here).

2) somebody (some rich guy!) stole my money
3) I should be getting (fill in the blank) for free, or it's just costing too much.
Yeah, the evil banks made you run up that credit card debt, take out that second mortgage, mispend all your money for dumb stuff, and now you're sore about it.
And Health Care costs too much! I mean, it's FREE in Canada and the UK, why isn't it FREE here?
But the real source of all this is corporatism, the first cousin of Fascism. The real big corporations, banks, the government, are all in agreement as to how the world should be organized, and you, little person with your dumb ideas and your votes, are getting in the way.
Which is the reason that the dumbass Boehner said what he said today about Trump. And probably what a good part of the Republican congressional caucus is paid to think by their big donors.

Here's the thing. We need to have a grown up conversation about the Fourth Amendment in the digital age and the manner in which privacy concerns will be balanced with the realities of how people communicate today and in the future.

At this point in time, the burden is on those who would defend what the intelligence community does to set out, in detail, the manner in which this will be prevented and, more importantly, how those who do violate such procedures will be prosecuted.
Because until that happens? I will presume that those defending such practices believe the Fourth Amendment should be repealed but do not have the intellectual honesty to admit so forthrightly,.

As someone who went through a program, most of them are pedantic fart sniffers. Not all, but most.
When they're not sitting around arguing about who gets the office with the window (as and undergrad I was once urged to attend an important department meeting where they sat around worried about who gets an office with a window...and this went on for an hour), they're wasting their time writing articles about how many nails held Billy the Kid's boots together.
They love proving popular history or folklore wrong. I mean they LOVE it. "Did you know there were only FIVE deaths by gunfire in Dodge City at the height of the American West?!?!?!" Someone did a study on it. Neat but meh.
It's really so they feel superior to everyone else.

Once had a professor in another department ask what I was majoring in and when I told him he asked what time frame because if it was within the last 150 years, it's not history it's journalism.
He pretty much nailed it. We usually only start to know and see more after a lot of time has passed.
