Memorial Day is a time for remembrance. Many think of the ones who have died in combat, but a forgotten group is the Missing In Action. On this solemn day Americans should think about those who never came home, with their families left in limbo. I don't know about "gripped" but this society has an inordinate interest in nostalgia probably because it has more access to it than any other society did. Photos are, essentially, free these days (versus the old cameras, film developing, storage, etc.), videos are everywhere, recordings of the past are available on demand. In the past you could only be so interested in nostalgia ... and then the feeling would easily pass because you had nothing more than a few photo albums to page through.
That wide access to nostalgia leads to the popular culture catering to it and profiting off of it. I think it's just that simple. The past is more available and is more of an ongoing rival for the contemporary.

Let me give you a truly honest guy's opinion:
I haven't seen the suit you linked to (my script blocker didn't like the way you linked it) If you have a nice rack and a decent body then you can never go wrong with a fairly skimpy bikini. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Guys really don't care about "styles" of bikinis. To a guy's eyes, there really is no such thing. There are just bikinis and skin.
What is best is what exposes the most of the attractive parts of your figure (within taste, of course, which is your decision only - as guys don't really care about that).
That's really how it is. Most swimsuit fashion is wasted. Guys don't much care, as long as it's kind of skimpy.

No, there was a breeding program instituted on a few islands in the 50's but it set aside during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and never re-mounted properly. The population is still small but is considered to be genetically varied enough that they are thinking of re-introducing it off some of the Gulf coast islands if they get permission from the National Park Service.
I only hope they won't have trouble since, with no surviving natural predators, the population may get out of hand.

There's a bunch of different ones out there, many are based on Solfeggio tones. They really shouldn't work, but when I have them on while I'm on the computer, they seem to keep me not angry or positive, depending on which one I listen to.
Try a few of the ones out on the sidebar; you might like them more.

Insomniac, same here too. I was recently triggered reading one of those "Evil HR Lady" columns about harassment in the office, and "what to do about it."
It triggers me, especially when I read "if you do this they HAVE to act on your complaint," because it's all bullshit. If your bosses like you, your harassers get punished; if your bosses DON'T like you, they do nothing, basically start looking for a half-assed reason to fire you and start harassing you themselves. There is NOTHING that someone who isn't rich, powerful and popular in the office can do about getting harassed, especially if you're an overweight straight white male like I am. THEY WILL DO NOTHING AND BLAME YOU FOR YOUR OWN HARASSMENT.
I have NEVER had a boss stand up for me. Never, never, never. And to this day it pisses me off to no end.

Anyhow I have a friend who's an arborist. He tells me all the spruce trees in western Canada are dying from a particular fungal disease.
The worst part is not that spruce trees are dying. The worst part is that they become tinder dry and it would take nothing more than a spark to make them explode into flame. According to him it wouldn't take much at all to cause a fire storm similar to Fort MacMurray.
In the beginning spruce needles go from glossy blue green to dull green. In end stages they go pink.
What do you think? FWIW he's a good old conservative boy.

Everything about the original TP is great. I've just seen the first 4 episodes of the new version and it's not really working for me. The "melodrama/soap" aspect of the original kept the story moving forward and served to establish characters, motivations and whatnot. This would be mixed with bouts of the surreal. It was pretty much always *weird*, but you knew who was who, what was going on and why. The new series is much more Lynch post-Twin Peaks style.

I like it so far. I am only about half way through the second season (the killer was revealed.) However, the tenor of the show has also changed from he first season. It is not bad, per se, but I can see why people started to change the channel. Much darker, more serious and aside from Cooper, everyone seems to be flawed in a major way. Oh and Pete.

Sports are interesting. People love watching live sports but almost no one will watch old games/competitions. Not even the "great" battles. They can't give away ad time on classic sports telecasts.

Good point. I think it's because a good sports movie will engage the audience with the personalities, flaws, and aspirations of the characters, so the development of the narrative interests us, even if we know how it turns out.
OTOH, in sports, we generally don't really know much about the protagonists on a personal level, so the only aspect of interest is the outcome.

There is a fourth: Be able to fire the people who need to be fired. If you do it right you only have to do it once or twice- if you work in a normal place and you make everyone know what the guidelines are and you put people in positions suited to them.

My main point was just that you need to retrain your mind to start thinking of something else when it goes to the angry place.
The minute you start thinking about your ex, or the situation in general or whatever, you have got to just say STOP. I do not want this anger/sorrow,rage in my life anymore. Then look back and remember a time, even just an instant, when you were happy, and think about that, relive every detail.
You need to do that to give yourself just a teeny second of relief from your misery.

What makes it ominous is that many state and federal lands don't allow the sort of salvage logging and proscribed burning that would both save the wood and clear the fuels from the forests and prevent drastic fires.
But, the greenies have deep pockets for lawfare, made deeper by the fact that the feds agree with them, and they don't have to deal with the financial loss these lawsuits closing the forests from cutting cause from closing mills and from the catastrophic fires.

I've never had a manager that really knew what I do. They do get an insight in how well I do my job from the customers in the company that I produce results for. A good manager can read if customers in the company are happy and reward/punish appropriately.

I'd go even further than this video. I don't think the stern was even out of the water at all when the breakup happened. One of the last wireless messages said that the engine room was flooding. That would have been impossible if the stern was out of the water.
The survivors clearly recalled seeing the stern standing high in the air, but that happened after the breakup.

Famiglia Guevara visited Sequoia National Forest a couple years ago, where I was surprised that the Forest Service admitted that for decades they'd been seriously off-base in trying to fight every forest fire, little realizing that forest fires are part of the life cycle of the sequoias. They require fires to burn out the underbrush, weeds, and leaves so the sequoia seeds can get down to the soil.

After one of the interchanges I pointed out to the business guy that I could get an MBA (which he didn't have) in a year.
Whereas to reproduce my expertise, he'd have to go back to college for four years to do a chemistry degree, five years to do a Ph.D., and a couple years of postdoc. At that point he'd be qualified to be a junior member of one of my (numerous) subordinates.

Meh. There were millions of WWII vets who had been in the thick of it.
It was a political appointment (as almost everything concerning Washington is) and it did nothing to help espionage efforts. I like my spymasters to actually know a little something about spying.
But, as I said, this is a general Washington thing. They think that anyone can run anything. Of course, this is why bullshit like affirmative action comes out of Washington. They live to refute the idea of ability or competence.

There was a major FUBAR with a new product launch, that was, IMHO, partly caused by some really bad management decisions. But as the company Technical Director, I was blamed. It was an ugly meeting. Myself and one of my subordinates really felt ambushed. I was about to kill our Sales Manager (who is a two-faced conniving shit).
But that was two years ago. Memories are long. This and a couple other things caused me to get my ass kicked. Lucky, frankly, to still have a job and being well paid. Somebody else has my old job now, and the main thing he does is write reports. And fart around traveling with Salesmen doing Technical support, about some things he hasn't a clue about.

Tiger didn't have serious health problems until later. He stopped winning, pretty much, right after his wife found out he was banging everything in sight and went after him with a 7 iron. It was still a couple/few years until he started having physical issues. But he just stopped winning at that point. That was pretty much it.

My mom was the same way. I had not quite pitch black, but very dark and I started showing grey in my 20's. Not as bad as my best friend however, he was half grey when he was 25.

Ah, the perils of R&D in biotech startups. When starting out, they need people at the lab bench to find something worth a crap. But when the researchers have found something worth a crap, the startups now need to pay for clinical development, and so don't any longer need people at the lab bench.

I think Tiger had knee problems in college. ACL? A couple of knee surgeries and 3 or 4 back surgeries.

It worked for a good, long time though. He was the best ever for over a decade. It seems that once he had to stop screwing around he just lost it. That banging everything in sight seemed to be important to his mental state and once that was exposed and he had to really tone it down everything else fell apart.
He still ended up with a pretty great record. He was clearly, at his prime, the best golfer ever and over his career he was mixed in with the top three (hard to really say that any one of them was "better" than the others, overall). If he could have kept himself from nailing the neighbor's daughter he might have lasted a few more years and put distance between himself and everyone else in the career records. But ... that's life.

A buddy of mine (who was a damn good golfer) pointed out that John Daley was able to put such a hurting on the ball because he twisted himself up into a pretzel swinging. He thought Tiger should have more longevity because he used a different swing that was not quite as gymnastic. Guess he was wrong.

You must not play. The pros have an amazing amount of speed and power in there swings. That causes lots and lots of torque on ones back. Over time, that causes issues.

Not as hard as you might think. There were parts of it I enjoyed, but dealing with tight deadlines and toxic personalities got old fast. Also, pursuing the substantive area I was interested in wasn't going to leave much space for that anyway. Of course, I'm unemployed now so a whole lot of good that did me.

Ok, think about this. When you are swinging a bat, you are pretty much twisting in the way that God intended- in a plane that is even with your shoulders (give or take.)
A golfer is swinging in a plane that is MUCH steeper. So you are not just putting lateral motion on the spine, but also adding another dimension of twisting. Most brand new golfers will, as my buddy put it, try to baseball the club. It is not really the same motion. Baseball is a much more natural use of the body.
The golf swing is not a natural movement in any way shape or form.

Don't know much about that. I never took lessons or studied. But any powerful swing is going to do some serious damage over time. I'm a bit of a long-drive person, myself, and I have had to become very conscientious about stretching (really painful, long stretching) before I hit. I have found, through past pain and injuries, exactly what I need to do to keep myself healthy, but even with that I won't hit balls more than two or three times a week, these days. But I really love smashing golf balls. One of the funnest things you can do standing up.

I play golf. I also played (and play) baseball. What does a golf club weigh? Practically nothing; it's pretty much like a broom handle, or a wiffle bat. How hard is it to catch up with a dead red golf ball? It's just sitting there, waiting to be hit.

But the pedantry of the comma is most important, especially in the wording of something like the 2nd Amendment.
And I think I remember (yeah, I suffer from Can't Remember Shit Syndrome) reading about a lawsuit that was lost due to a forgotten comma.
Comma Pedantry not only keeps lawyers in a job but is also fuel for Horde comments. Never underestimate the power of Comma Pedantry.

Yeah, they seem to ignore that complete sentence after the comma: '. . . , the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed'. I blame such stupidity on not only the lack of Civics being taught in schools, but also on English language teachers as well.

The Sisters of the Perpetually High triggered a memory. The first massive multiplayer game (MMORPG) I played was City of Heroes. Mostly so I could chat with my brother who was across the country. During the character creation, you had some space to describe how your character got their superpowers.
Now, my brother and I are incorrigible punsters. Seriously, do not incorrige us. My contribution to the genre was a nun from a convent on top of a mountain, high above the clouds. Her name was "Nun of the Above" and I got a LOT of groans from fellow players.
Seeing that article about the nuns higher than a kite... maybe I should have re-written her backstory.
(FYI - My other character was a communist dwarf named "Gnome Chomsky". My brother had an Arabic scrapper who gained his powers from being hit by a radioactive ice cream truck, named "Milk Sheikh")
