Alnwick Castle.jpg

Alnwick Castle
Joseph Mallord William Turner

I appreciate that there is just a bit more structure in this work compared to many of Turner's other paintings, and the deer in the lower left are sort of amusing. But this continues my Love-Hate relationship with the artist (not that he cares). Sometimes I love looking at his paintings...getting lost in the haze and the fog. And sometimes I snarl under my breath, "Just finish one, you pommy arse!"

13 It's always good to snarl at dead artists, I find. You have a lesser chance of them crashing the canvas on your head than if they were alive.

I like this. This is what it looks like here at my house today. Except for the castle. And the bridge. And the deer. And the water. But otherwise, just like it.

160 Why wouldn't Flynn take the 5th?

Seems pretty dang obvious the Left is out for a head, and at minimum will try to Scooter Libby him. They have transcripts from November and December - could easily do a perjury trap.

As Warden so eloquently said of the Left:

...I no longer have any investment in any particular political values, save
one: The rules created by the left will be applied to the left as
equally and punitively as they have applied them to the right. And when
they beg for mercy, I'll begin to reconsider. Or maybe not. Because fuck
these people.
...
They created this Frankenstein. They own it. I am free of all
obligation. I will never play defense again. I will attack, attack,
attack, attack using their own tactics against them until they learn
their lesson.

What I will not do is let them play my values against me ever again. I
don't need to prove that I'm better than them. I already know it.

239 fun story, I have a friend who has cerebral palsy and lots of mobility issues. Last year I asked him why he wasn't wearing his leg braces and it turns out it was because he didn't have the right shoes and his insurance stopped covering them. I started a gofundme campaign and we raised $3k in a week which set him up for shoes for life really. A few months ago he told me about these new "walk aides" that he could get, electrical devices on each leg, no need for braces (painful to wear), and greater mobility, but very expensive. He thought I could easily raise $10k for him (he thinks I can do anything) and it scared the crap out of me. I tried, I wasn't getting very far but raised a couple thousand. Yesterday a local bar threw a benefit for him, silent auction, chinese raffle, etc - his mom deposited $14,919 into his medical needs account this morning. Didn't need a mandate from Congress, his health insurance was not covering it, a group of people who like beer and music all threw some money in the tin for him and he will have his new walk aides this Tuesday.

240 CBD wrote, "I appreciate that there is just a bit more structure in this work compared to many of Turner's other paintings, and the deer in the lower left are sort of amusing."

All of Turner's paintings are highly structured, but the structure is effected by means of color, not line. Turner is arguably one of the greatest colorists of all time. Some of his techniques were revolutionary in concept, a hundred or more years ahead of his own time, and had a hugely influential impact on the Impressionists and beyond.

Turner's emphasis on color rather than line may set him apart from that Colossus of Gargantuan Artistic Genius that is Norman Rockwell, but Turner's no less for it.

will most likely end up at Walmart as a greeter, McDonalds asking if you

We like to tell ourselves that.

But, the truth is, they'll end up in an HR department.
Or as a diversity hire somewhere.

And they'll resent the shit out of ordinary people like you and me.
And they'll stock the corporation with their fellow unthinking cows.

Because, as much as we hate them, they still get to tap into the elite connections their credentials buy--because too many like us who fought tooth and nail to claw out a living STILL buy into the myth and notion that a college degree from a big name school is worth more over guy who's been doing that job for 10 years.

I don't know how many job announcements looking for 5+ years experienced attorney's I've read over the last 6 months that include the requirement that they be a grad from a top law school and in the top 1/3 or 1/4 of their class.
Hell, I saw one that wanted a 10+ year attorney with those.

This story annoys the heck out of me. 75 jackhole SJWs, out of a graduating class of over 2,000 get up and act like crying winy strutting asses and get wall to wall, coast to coast positive coverage. And not only positive coverage but a narrative coverage of "see? The entire country hates Trump and his evil lackeys" variety. 75 out of 2,000. For all those playing at home, that is .0375% of the graduating class, so small as to not even represent a rounding error. For which the rest of the 99.9625% roundly booed the stupid jackasses. Understandably, as it was both rude to the Vice President (for no reason whatsoever) and also selfish and disruptive of the special day of all the grads who were more than happy to have a sitting VP at their graduation.
Some numbnuts at my graduation from law school tried the same thing - two or three ( out of 500) stood up with signs over the presence of a minor Bush ( the Elder) administration official. The 99 percent solid majority ( i.e. everyone) roundly booed the jerks and told them to "sit the hell"down and stop disrupting our graduation - if they wanted to protest they could have done it outside on the sidewalk.
Anyway - there is an alternate headline for the ND graduation story and it reads like this: "Overwhelming Majority of Notre Dame Students Boo Embarrassingly Small Number of "Anti Pence" Protesters." With a sub headline being: "support for Trump and his administration remains strong in most of the country despite nonsense, made-up "news" stories and ginned-up, astro-turf `protests' organized by LA and NYC internationalist communists"

362 Sliders:

2 lb. ground beef
l envelope onion soup mix
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons water
1/3 cup plain, dry bread crumbs
3/4 lb. Velveeta, cut into 1/4 inch slices
2 pkgs. slider rolls (I use Maier's potato dinner rolls)

Heat oven too 400'F. Mix meat, soup, egg, pepper, water, and bread crumbs together. Press mixture evenly onto bottom of 15 X 10 X 1 inch baking pan (jelly roll sheet). Prick meat mixture all over with fork.

Bake 10-15 minutes or to desired doneness. Drain off grease (carefully!).

Place Velveeta slices over cooked meat. Bake 1 minute longer or until cheese begins to melt. Place the tops of slider rolls onto meat and cheese, covering it entirely. Then cut out the burgers to the size of the roll tops. Lift off each burger with a spatula and place on the bottom half of the roll.

371 I've a slider recipe I think is darned good:

2lbs 80/20 ground beef*
Lowery's season salt
Black pepper
Dehydrated onion flakes
Red pepper flakes (optional)
American cheese
Potato rolls
Pickle slices

Sprinkle salt, black pepper and the onion flakes in the 9X13 pan.
Spread out the beef evenly in the pan.
Sprinkle more salt, black pepper and onion flakes on top. And red pepper if you want.
Cover with foil.
Place in pre-heated 400 degree oven 45-60 minutes (I use the meat thermometer to get to at least 170).
Remove from oven and cover with the cheese slices.
Cut into squares.
Place squares into potato rolls with 2-3 pickle slices.
Eat.

*Yes, 80/20. You want the meat sitting there floating and cooking in the fat.

554 100% wrong. No Injun at all...
Well, maybe. The trouble with the test is that it gives you your recognizable genetic makeup, which is *not* the same thing as your ancestry. To show trace ancestry, the gene markers have to have passed through multiple cycles of meiosis in which the genes were pared down. If an ancestor started off with three markers, two copies each (perfect 100% injun), each time their descendants reproduced with whitey, there was a 50% chance of a marker being passed on - much less if the markers were on the same chromosome. Their kids had one copy of each, their grandkids would be down to 87.5% chance max of *at least one* marker but as little as 12.5% to have all three, and the odds go down every generation.

It's entirely possible 5-6 generations out to have no markers at all, even likely. Plus which, some markers get tagged as *asian* markers in preference to red man.

You don't need a whole lot of training to point a hose at a fire.

Can I find fault? Yes. It is less than perfect, for all concerned. But all concerned have major concerns with just letting the status quo stand as is.

Everyone seems to realize that this is the moment in time that a common enemy exists, and if they do not deal with that common enemy, *they* may not exist.

However... it seems to me that if you have enough money to finance a lawyer, you will get SSDI, even though your "issue" is a scam. I know someone right now that has been collecting for at least ten years who is completely gaming the system-- he's too lazy to hold a job, (supposedly "bipolar") and mom and dad don't want to finance him anymore.

BTW, the school lunch program is a perfect example. If X number of families in a community is at Y% of the poverty level (or some similar formula), ALL the kids in school are eligible for free lunch, breakfast, etc.

That being said - Aliens reigns supreme.

The Saudis are gonna wish they spent their money on infrastructure and education.

Instead, of global jihad and blowing up the World Trade Center.

I hope part of Trump's deal with them is that they stop building radical, jihad-happy mosques in the US,

714 BTW, the school lunch program is a perfect example. If X number of families in a community is at Y% of the poverty level (or some similar formula), ALL the kids in school are eligible for free lunch, breakfast, etc.

The kids are getting piles of stuff, eating one thing, and throwing the rest away. I wouldn't be surprised if we throw away a few million gallons of unopened milk every day. Milk that has been out of refrigeration for twenty minutes.

What makes me sick is a big reason why there hasn't been reform despite Republicans being in charge of Congress for a while now is that "Big Business" LOVES EBT.

Just so many industries get "fat" off of this program.

Once again, the Chamber of Commerce wing is anything but conservative. But the last 20 years or so, the definition of conservative has been "things big business wants"

I can deal with anti-heroes, but my problem with Suicide Squad was that it's an incoherent mess.

716 >>>>I'd like to see Trump take one 2 entitlement problems as President.

Reform food stamps/EBT and SSDI.

I actually think there's widespread support for it, just like there
was for welfare reform in the 90's when Republicans were brave enough to
take it on. Then you had Democrats bragging about "ending welfare as
we know it".

.
.
.Food Stamp fraud needs to be cleaned up. When we lived in Kentucky at the first of the month when the EBT cards got loaded up Walmart would pull pallet loads of soda into the aisles.

People would come in and buy as much as they could carry and take it to a place that would buy it from them for 50 cents on the dollar and give them cash. The two places would then resell the discounted soda and make a tidy profit off of tax payer $$$.

Everyone knew about it including the State AG (a Democrat) but really never did anything about it other than bust a few people who just went to a different place the next month. There was talk about changing the law but nothing ever came out of that. Heck the local news channel in Lexington KY ran a big expo on it.

All they need to do is remove soda from authorized EBT purchases and it would stop. At least until they found some other scam.

725 Lets see them do the Titanic as an insurance fraud gone wrong (at least in terms of lost life). The biggest evidence for it is the Titanic breaking in half. The twin was said to have structural damage from a collision with a warship but served 24 years.

Ships that sink one end first often break in half. The end sticking up out of the water is unsupported, and the structure snaps from its own weight.

I just don't want "window dressing" type reforms.

Let states have more leeway, add tough work requirements, have time limits like unemployment does, etc.

If I had my way, it would just be soup kitchens and that's it.

As I watched the new Showtime version last night, I could not help but think of his recent post about how 'prestige TV' = boring. They really jammed about 55 minutes worth of content into their 120 minute 'two episode' premiere. Also - was it even possible to tell where the break between episode 1 and episode 2 were? Just going purely by time it would be approximately before a team of cops serve a search warrant on a murder suspects house, but I really didn't sense any part of the story arc that was making a natural break around then. Then again, I didn't for the two hours as a whole, either.

I have high hopes for this because I did love the original (and watching its recent replays reminds me why) and in addition to getting a large amount of the original cast back, they got some good names for new talent. But those first two hours... urrm. I'll give it another couple of episodes to see if they sort it out. But really - pick up the damn pace.

I will say that while slow as hell and excessively Lynch-weird, what story content their actually was, I found interesting. And there was some effectively creepy suspense/horror content, even if it was pretty inexplicable.
